There's nothing quite like spending the holidays in paradise, and that's exactly what we did this year. We flew to Kauai early Christmas morning and spent 5 nights on the southern tip of the island in Poipu. Known as the Garden Isle, Kauai's beauty (and the food!) did NOT disappoint.----Adventures & Mousecapades is a passion project from Alicea & Nathan Novak - two Seattleites addicted to The Mouse. Mike is back, and the guys try answering how much riffing is prepared vs off the top of the dome. Aldrine equates riffs to catchphrases and new vocabulary to try out in sentences. Mike give a brief history lesson of riffing, and explains the different levels of difficulty of riffs/improvising. A UUer asks the guys what they think about the origin of Mele Kalikimaka which leads the crew to discuss the perception of Hawaii in the 20's, and stereotypes people have about music from different cultures. Someone else ask how much songs you should know to perform while another member asks if using Tabs is a crutch? It's a grab bag of tangents and references.

Mele Kalikimaka as the ThawedCast covers 'Moana,' the monumental 2016 film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, directed by longtime Disney Animation dynamic duo John Musker and Ron Clements, and co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. Bridget, Lara and Philip revisit the mythical ancient Polynesian world of Moana of Motunui (Auli'i Cravalho) and her adventures with the demigod Maui (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). Moana--a princess of sorts as the daughter of the chief--is faced with inheriting the leadership of an insular island nation that has abandoned its seafaring roots. However, she must learn to sail in order to restore the Heart of Te Fiti, a magical relic bestowed on her by the ocean. Failing in her mission would doom her island to a growing famine. Guided by her grandmother's spirit and the power of the ocean, she first seeks out the aid of the shapeshifter Maui. He reluctantly agrees to accompany her, first to retrieve his magical fishhook, and then to potentially face the perils posed by the demon Te Kā, who has corrupted the influence of the nature goddess Te Fiti. It's a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day and we're here to F*CK SH*T UP. Welcome Weirdos to our last REGULAR episode of the season! It's time to get a little festive! This week we have FOUR gruesome, creepy, mind-bending, strange stories for you to feast your ears (and eyes!) on. Lauren starts us off with a beautiful vacation into a PARANORMAL PARADISE! She teaches us about the legend of Hawaii's MOST HAUNTED HOUSE- The Kaimuki House- and the (Japanese??) ghost (cat??) that lives inside it Ashley swings us around to a CONSPIRACY THEORY that Human Beings could not have been originally FROM planet Earth and the proof of that lies in our wittle babies. Humans are the only mammals on the planet that need YEARS to be able to care/fend for themselves… but why is that? Is it because this isn't our planet? Lauren comes back at us with a TRUE CRIME TIME that has a Christmas twist! On December 25 1929 in Germantown, North Carolina Charles Davis “Charlie” Lawson murdered his wife and six of his seven children. What on Earth could have driven him to do such a horrific act? And finally, to lighten things up a bit, Ashley finishes off the episode with a new segment all about URBAN LEGENDS! But not the ones we are familiar with here in the US— we're traveling to Ukraine to investigate the mystery of the BLACK VOLGA and then hitting up South Korea to see if there's anything behind their fear of electric fans. We did it again! Listen to this to hear me and friends sing some solos and duets of famous Christmas songs. I joined talented musician Justin Belew at his production studio Bibb City Sound in Columbus GA for part 2 of our J & J Christmas Music Extravaganza, following up on the most popular "Run The Race" episode from the past year (check out #92). We have a few special guests performing this time around, including my WTVM co-anchor Barbara Gauthier. Subscribe to listen and find all the conversations I have weekly about faith and fitness! We have some fun with this one, give some interesting info on holiday songs you know, and talk about the Gospel that's at the heart of Christmas. Here's a rundown of the songs we sing and talk about: (4:43) JINGLE BELLS, one of the most famous ones but did it originate in Boston or Savannah GA? It also had a different title. After we sing that together, (11:16) I do an Elvis impersonation (maybe not a good one) on BLUE CHRISTMAS, a sad tune, while (14:32) Justin turns into a diva for ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU by Mariah Carey, a song that people tend to love or hate. (17:32) We do some fun or funny duets with LET IT SNOW! which was written in the summer sun of California, but does everyone want snow? Justin and i also play our parts in (26:19) BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE. We also talk about the controversy surrounding this song over the last decade vs. the original intent. (32:58) Local songwriter, singer, and Army veteran Tim Maggart, who's originally from TN, plays guitar and does his rendition of TENNESSEE CHRISTMAS, a classic by Amy Grant. He talks about memories songs bring and how the military handles the holidays. He also jumps in for a quick FELIZ NAVIDAD, then we continue the international flavor with (42:00) my solo of MELE KALIKIMAKA, Hawaii's greeting at Christmas, played on a ukulele from Waikiki! There are also important hymns and songs focused on Jesus that we sing, like (47:47) O COME ALL YE FAUTHFUL, sung at many holiday services at church, then we discuss the changing lyrics of (53:31) AWAY IN A MANGER and sing the classic song of faith together. (57:28) Veteran TV news anchor and my friend Barbara Gauthier does a beautiful acapella version of SILENT NIGHT, then she and I talk about the Savior Jesus being born and what people may have thought of that news more then 2,000 years ago. (1:06:08) Justin also plays and sings one of his favorite holiday songs by a Christian artist, LABOR OF LOVE by Andrew Peterson. We discuss the poetic lyrics that presents the Gospel in a raw way, how it may have been for Joseph and Mary. We have some fun with our J & J duet of (1:19:30) RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER, a character and song which has a surprisingly sad origin. Were the other reindeer really bullies to Rudolph? We discuss. (1:27:25) The Carpenters sang this one much better, but i give it a try with (THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE) HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, then we close out this Christmas Music special with (1:36:58) a quick discussion about how The Charlie Brown Christmas Special almost did not air, but brings us wonderful music like CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE. We give you an instrumental version and brief duet. Hope you enjoyed our music and discussion about Christmas, faith, music, and more. Tell your friends about it! Mele Kalikimaka, everybody. As part of Empire's Advent Calendar season, here's a little gift from us to you, as we temporarily break down the door of the Empire Spoiler Special subscription channel and bring you the retro spoiler pod we recorded a couple of years ago for one of the most beloved modern Christmas movies: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Featuring an in-depth deep dive with the film's director, Jeremiah S. Chechik (no, the S. doesn't stand for Santa), and a good old natter about the film and the Griswold family festivities between superfans Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and Nick de Semlyen. As the poster once put it, 'Yule love it!'. Thankfully, the jokes in the film are better. And if you like this, there's more where that came from for Spoiler Special subscribers. Enjoy!
