Author Lucy O'Brien reveals the real story of Karen Carpenter in her book; Lead Sister. All the interviews at http://www.popthehistorymakers.comKaren Carpenter was one half of the sibling duo The Carpenters, who rose to fame in the 1970s with hits like Close to You and We've Only Just Begun. Known for her rich, melancholic voice and exceptional drumming skills, Karen helped define the Carpenters' distinctive sound. Despite their success, Karen struggled with anorexia nervosa, which tragically led to her death in 1983 at the age of 32.In 2023, British author and journalist Lucy O'Brien published Lead Sister: The Story of Karen Carpenter, a biography that explores Karen's life and legacy beyond the often-simplified narrative of her as a victim. O'Brien, who began her career in music journalism in the 1980s with NME and The Guardian, is known for her work on women in music, including She Bop: The Definitive History of Women in Rock, Pop, and Soul (1995) and biographies of Dusty Springfield, Annie Lennox, and Madonna. Lead Sister draws on fresh interviews with friends and collaborators, highlighting Karen's influence as a singer, drummer, and producer. The book was named a Times Book of the Year and has been praised for its insightful and compassionate portrayal of Karen Carpenter. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

[SEGMENT 2-1] From Ruin to Renewal 1 Where are the Trump naysayers? I know many still exist, though most have been silenced. This includes RINOs who aided Democrats in plotting the demise of Trump and MAGA. I spoke of the NeverTrumpers recently. They now want back on the wagon, as they continue to plot against President Trump and his agenda. Still, many of them have been silenced, as they watch the difference between competence and failure. Look at what the Left have learned about Biden over the past year. And what of all the reveals to come? How could you possibly have supported this idiot and his agenda. While many on the Left continue with their muscle-memory to oppose Trump, they now catch themselves, course-correct, and rethink their knee-jerk lunacy. Take for example all the outspoken entertainers and Hollyweirdos. For the most part, they have kept a sock in their pie holes as it relates to Trump. It's difficult to criticize the man when you have Biden to whom you can compare him. Also, we know that most of these Tinseltown twits virtual-signal publicly while privately supporting Trump's policies. Even they look at the hard-core idiots like DeNiro and Stephen King as too far gone. Many of these pansy-asses exist, awaiting the moment they can proclaim that they never supported Biden, Kamala, or the Democrats. Trump will be the new fashion for 2025, as the closet-MAGA fakes simmer. As soon as Trump does something “Trumpian”, they will pretend they've been down with Trump since circa 2016. “We had his back!” And Trump will have many opportunities. He could end Biden's proxy war with Russia. He's already making moves on the Chinese with trade and the Panama Canal. And in the words of The Carpenters, “We've Only Just Begun”. I saw a stat that read: From 2021-24, approximately 6% of new jobs added by S&P 100 companies went to white males [SEGMENT 2-2] From Ruin to Renewal 2 What's your plan to make your life better next year? Let's begin there, because without that you can't help others. If you haven't thought about it, and put it on paper with ACTION ITEMS, please do so. Help yourself FIRST. Then do that thing that is required for real happiness: help others. Make a plan for that. It takes a LOT less than you think. A phone call, a note in the mail, and occasionally financial help. But don't rely on the money aspect first. It's usually just letting people you love know that you're thinking about them. You're all special. But in 2025 I challenge you to be better. Not because we are measuring, because the measurement is in how YOU feel. I'm not judging. But I know God has given you much. Share it. In a time of seismic shifts and reckonings, Americans stand at the precipice of profound change. Looking back at what we leave behind, we see a trail of political deceit, cultural absurdity, and institutional failures that have scarred the nation's history. But alongside this retrospective, there are memories we refuse to let fade—hard lessons and pivotal moments that underscore the resilience of truth. And on the horizon, a brighter future glimmers, with opportunities to rebuild on the foundation of accountability and common sense. Leaving the Past in the Dust [SEGMENT 2-3] From Ruin to Renewal 3 Barack Obama's legacy is finally unraveling. Once hailed as a transformative figure, his impact now reveals cracks in the facade. From economic stagnation to divisive rhetoric, Obama's tenure ultimately set the stage for his handpicked successor, Joe Biden, who amplified the damage. Biden's presidency—a product of the political maneuvering orchestrated by Obama—exemplifies the erosion of American leadership. Together, they'll be remembered as the "Dynamic Duo Dingbats," emblematic of what went wrong. The Clintons, too, have been relegated to history's dustbin. Their attempt to align their name with families like the Rockefellers or the Kennedys faltered under the weight of corruption and scandal. Hillary's loss to Trump was the final nail in the coffin for Clintonism, a political dynasty undone by its hubris. Gone, too, is the outdated notion that Trump can't lead Republicans to victory. The old-guard Republicanism—rooted in compromise and tepid policy—has been supplanted by a new era of bold, unapologetic conservatism. MAGA has meaning, and unlike the Tea Party movement, MAGA has staying power. Americans have also turned their backs on the once-trustworthy media, preferring MAGA influencers for their truth. Years of lies and selective reporting have shattered any credibility these institutions once held. Few people believe the NY Times, WaPo, CNN, and the like. The numbers prove it and Van Jones said it recently [X] SB – Van Jones on media "Belief in the science," as weaponized by Leftists, has similarly crumbled. From gender ideology to the mishandling of COVID-19, the so-called experts—whether in the FDA, NIH, or DOJ—have proven untrustworthy. Their failures are etched into the collective memory of a populace betrayed by those they were told to trust. Likewise, Leftist platitudes such as "saving democracy" and "for the greater good" have lost all meaning, exposed as cynical tools to silence dissent. Perhaps most importantly, the tide is turning against the Left's normalization of the sexualization of children and the creeping acceptance of pedophilia. Criminals in government and culture will find their time is up as the public demands accountability. Lessons We Must Remember Julian Assange's plight stands as a stark reminder of what happens to those who challenge the status quo. His detention stifled stories that could have unveiled further corruption, particularly surrounding the Biden family. Similarly, the Left's denial of Biden's incompetence and corruption remains a damning testament to media complicity. How is it that the Bidens managed to dodge scrutiny while seemingly laundering half of Beijing's treasury? The Biden crime family's antics could fill a Netflix series—and probably should. As you consider what Assange might have accomplished if not tethered to the Ecuadorian embassy, remember all that our media didn't do. Meanwhile, the DOJ's relentless targeting of Trump, aided by state-level cronies in New York and Georgia, underscores the weaponization of the justice system. Their lawfare campaign has been nothing short of historic—an epic quest to find something, anything, to pin on Trump. Yet every grand charge against him has collapsed like a Jenga tower at a kid's birthday party. It's almost comical to watch prosecutors argue, “This time, we've got him!” only for Trump to moonwalk out of the courtroom. And then there's Trump himself, the ultimate troll. Who else could turn working at McDonald's into a political flex? While Leftists mocked him flipping burgers, Trump spun it as a symbol of his connection to the average American. Let's not forget his sanitation stint—cleaning up the political trash Leftists left behind—a metaphor so on point it deserves an Emmy. Every one of Trump's antics serves a purpose: to troll, to entertain, and most importantly, to expose the absurdity of his detractors. Speaking of absurdity, remember when Ketanji Brown Jackson couldn't define a woman during her confirmation hearings? That moment alone should be preserved in the Smithsonian as a cultural artifact of wokeism's peak. Meanwhile, Biden's record-setting pardons—37 criminals off death row and counting—have set a new standard for tone-deaf governance. By the time he's done, Biden's pardon list might include the guy who stole your lunch at work. And let's not forget Hollywood's Diddy scandal and the still-unreleased Epstein list. These dark secrets promise to unravel networks of power and corruption, implicating everyone from studio execs to politicians. Every day that list stays hidden is another day the internet's conspiracy theorists sharpen their memes. [SEGMENT 2-4] From Ruin to Renewal 4 Jimmy Carter died over the weekend. I would never celebrate a person's death, but I have to say I'm not unhappy that he's gone. Democrats milked that man for decades, and he was one of the worst presidents in history. Education Department was started by him. The Department of Energy. Who can forget the hostage crisis, and how he allowed Muslim fundamentalists to start terrorizing the world? I know he built a few poor people some houses, but it doesn't undo all the damage he did as president. Carter was the first president Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-kevin-jackson-show--2896352/support.

I discovered this track on a WB compilation set named “My Mind Gets High”, and boy… upon hearing this cut did I ever started experiencing flashbacks. In 1968, The Holy Mackerel was explicitly created as a vehicle for young, up and coming singer-songwriter Paul Williams, whose heavily processed vocal, along with the sitar, places this psychedelic artifact squarely into its late 60s time zone, and although I didn't start my hallucinogenic experiments until a bit later (around 1970), Wildflowers sonic acid bath trips me out nostalgically. Paul Williams became a household name in the 1970s when his elfin voice and tiny stature captured America's imagination on tv, radio, and film. It didn't hurt that he had a prodigious songwriting talent, too: (We've Only Just Begun; Old Fashioned Love Song, etc). His brother, Mentor - also a songwriting Colossus (Drift Away) was recruited for his sibling's manufactured band, as well - it was a hastily, and often reassembled group of rotating membership, which only lasted about a year or so. Interestingly, Paul didn't write this tune; it was penned by bassist Bob Harvey, who later worked for Elvis - and, indeed, it lacks the sentimental tendencies of its lead singer's writing. This is more of a mood piece, which perfectly captures that moment when the acid starts to come on. Sublime.
Karen Carpenter was one half of the Carpenters, a brother and sister singing duo that sold over 150 million records and they had 17 hits. She was an amazing drummer and singer. Her voice had no equal. But despite her amazing talent, she was a tortured soul that suffered from an eating disorder at a time when such a thing was misunderstood and it eventually took her life. And quite possibly that may be why her spirit is at unrest. Join us as we share the history and hauntings of Karen Carpenter. Their most recent single, Omnibus Boners, is on its way to 5000 streams and has been described by Strephen Byrne (Golden Plec) as ‘the latest example of Irish ladies delivering the goods'. Their influences vary from the singer songwriters of the 60s and 70s such as Paul Simon, Carole King or Joni Mitchell, to the BritPop and rock bands of the 90s, such as Elastica, Catatonia, Radiohead or Blur. Their lyrics talk about alienation and about yearning for connection, complemented by crunchy guitars, loud drums and catchy vocal melodies. Original Air Date: January 8, 2018Paul Williams is the songwriting legend behind hits such as Barbra Streisand's Oscar-winning song, "Evergreen," Kermit the Frog's beloved "Rainbow Connection" and the Carpenters classic "We've Only Just Begun." Paul says that, at the height of his fame, an addiction to alcohol and drugs nearly destroyed him. After hitting rock bottom in a harrowing public meltdown, Paul got sober and started a difficult journey to discovering the true happiness he feels today. Together with author, director and screenwriter Tracey Jackson, Paul has written a book, "Gratitude and Trust," outlining six affirmations they say can help people become better versions of themselves. The co-authors claim that the affirmations work for fear-based habits like perfectionism, overeating, fear of intimacy and even smartphone obsession. Paul says, "When getting help was important enough for me to let go of ego and do it, I began to connect. And that connection, that brought me to life."Want more podcasts from OWN? Hello, darkness, my old friend[^1]. That's what he said as he walked into the office for the first time. I was sitting in the morning sun[^2], feeling a bit out of place in the new environment. He introduced himself with, "This is a story of a girl"[^3], though obviously not about him. We laughed, and I thought, "Once upon a time, not so long ago"[^4], two strangers started their journey. We quickly found common ground. He said, "Come gather 'round people, wherever you roam"[^5]. I nodded and replied, "I was working part-time in a five-and-dime"[^6]. From that day, we became fast friends. He had a way of saying, "Oh, what a night"[^7], no matter how the day went. Every morning, he greeted me with, "It's a beautiful day"[^8]. Together, we faced the corporate grind, believing that with a little help from my friends[^9], we could get through anything. One afternoon, he turned to me and said, "You can't always get what you want"[^10]. We laughed, agreeing that, "Here comes the sun"[^11], always brightened the darkest times. As time passed, we started hanging out after work. He'd often say, "Hey Jude, don't make it bad"[^12], whenever I was down. In return, I'd remind him, "Lean on me, when you're not strong"[^13], and he did. We shared countless memories, from late-night talks to weekend adventures. I remember, "It's been a long day without you, my friend"[^14], when he was on vacation, but we always reconnected like no time had passed. One evening, as we sat by the fire, he said, "If you're lost, you can look and you will find me"[^15]. I smiled and replied, "This will be our year, took a long time to come"[^16]. Our friendship was unbreakable. Years turned into decades, and even as life changed, our bond remained strong. He once said, "We've only just begun to live"[^17], and I knew he was right. In the end, "The love you take is equal to the love you make"[^18]. --- [^1]: The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel [^2]: Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding [^3]: Absolutely (Story of a Girl) by Nine Days [^4]: Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi [^5]: The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan [^6]: Raspberry Beret by Prince [^7]: December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night) by The Four Seasons [^8]: Beautiful Day by U2 [^9]: With a Little Help from My Friends by The Beatles [^10]: You Can't Always Get What You Want by The Rolling Stones [^11]: Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles [^12]: Hey Jude by The Beatles [^13]: Lean on Me by Bill Withers [^14]: See You Again by Wiz Khalifa ft. On this episode of The Claw's Corner Rich "The Claw" Cyr spends some time with author Randy Schmidt, the writer and producer of "Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection." From https://karencarpenterdoc.com/the-film/ - "As the #1 American musical act of the 1970s, the Carpenters were on “Top of the World,” producing a string of pop masterpieces, including “Close to You,” “We've Only Just Begun,” and “Rainy Days and Mondays.” But behind closed doors, Karen's quest for perfection resulted in low self-esteem, a disheartening love life, and a public battle with anorexia nervosa, which resulted in her untimely death at the age of only 32. Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection is a captivating, revealing, and unvarnished documentary providing astounding new insight into the singer's tragically short life and enduring musical legacy." Maybe you know Paul Williams for hits he co-wrote for the Carpenters (“We've Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays”) and Three Dog Night (“An Old Fashioned Love Song”). Or for his performances in Brian De Palma's Phantom of the Paradise and the Smokey and the Bandit movies. Or for his Oscar-winning song with Barbra Streisand, “Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star Is Born).” Or for the songs he wrote for Bugsy Malone and Ishtar. Or for his singing (and writing) on Daft Punk's 2013 Grammy-winning album, Random Access Memories. Or for what may be his most beloved song of all, “Rainbow Connection” (plus the rest of The Muppet Movie soundtrack). Factor in the current stage adaptation of the 1977 Jim Henson TV special, Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, and Williams has a lot to talk about—and he does so, delightfully.

This Christmas podcast is in honor of Mary's and my 50th Anniversary, which comes on December 29th. She and I are both in thankful awe of having made it thus far. And happily! To me this is worth celebrating. The cast sets out two requirements, or better, signs, as I see it, for an enduring marriage. The first is the romantic connection. Our marriage began with that in first place. There simply has to be a romantic (i.e., male-female) connection for the relationship to start -- or, perhaps better, for a relationship to be able to turn towards marriage. And then, once married, you find yourself needing at almost regular intervals to return to that initial romantic foundation. It is not enough for him or her to be my "best friend". That is certainly true -- Mary is my best friend! -- but the romantic element is prior. Friendship is not marriage. (This is why, incidentally, boys and men wince to the core when a girl or woman tells them they want to be just friends. And believe me, even when your husband hears you saying that he's your best friend, he seizes up inside. He won't tell you that, but his heart is stopping the minute you say it. Even tho', as I report, he is in fact your best friend.) So point one of ""We've Only Just Begun" (1973) is to underline the priority of the romantic connection over all else. (This is true, believe it or not, even when you're 75.) The second foundation stone of an enduring marriage is faith in God. Natch', you may see the specifics of that in different terms from those of your wife or husband. He may be reacting against Five Point Calvinism and you may be reacting against Baptist rules concerning conduct. But a shared root-implanted faith in God who is "Higher Than I" is indispensable for the navigation of problems. For the record, Mary and I have read the Bible and prayed together every morning early for almost all the years of our marriage. It's not a law, and it's not even a recommendation. But it's an observation. I don't know where we would be -- especially in the stressful times -- if we hadn't had a shared faith in a personal God. Like Mary's totally enchanting smile (and the response it created in me -- in the Fall of l969, in fact), Mary's openness to God was core for me. It is still core for me. Oh, and listen to the closing track, a Christmas track of the highest magnitude. Do give it time until... that last third (per usual) with these artists. Merry Christmas to us all, and Happy Anniversary to my wife of 50 years, Mary Cappleman Zahl. This cast is dedicated to our three sons: John A. Zahl, David W.F. Zahl, and Simeon McLean Zahl.
Paul Williams is one of the most beloved and respected music creators in the world today; a lyricist and composer who has won an Oscar Award, three Grammy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, an Ivor Novello International Award and earned induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Williams' timeless classics range from “We've Only Just Begun”, “You and Me Against the World” and “The Rainbow Connection” to "Touch" and "Beyond" on Daft Punk's chart-topping Album of the Year, Random Access Memories on which he also performed, receiving a Grammy as Featured Artist. As President and Chairman of the Board of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), he is also a leading spokesman for music creators in the digital age. In addition to music creators' rights, Paul is also passionate about recovery, and works tirelessly to destigmatize alcoholism and addiction. Sober 33 years, his humorous observations of life, love, and creativity, augmented by the education and knowledge he gained through his studies and certification from UCLA as a Certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor, has been shared in a best-selling book co-written by Tracey Jackson, entitled Gratitude and Trust: Six Affirmations That Will Change Your Life. While publicly lauded for his work as a songwriter, author and actor, most recently for his role with Billy Bob Thornton in Goliath, Paul predicts he'll be remembered for playing Little Enos in the Smokey and the Bandit trilogy and for his lyrics to “The Love Boat” theme. Remember those teenage years when we'd create breakup mixtapes? The potency of those songs, how they could evoke such raw emotions - whether it was Paul Simon's '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover' or The Carpenters' 'We've Only Just Begun'. Well, this episode is a homage to the power of music, its unforgettable moments, and the rock legends who've shaped its course. We kick off with a nostalgic trip to when The Police graced the stage at CBGB for their first time - a memory that's now 45 years old. We then switch gears to Robert Plant's recent performance of 'Stairway to Heaven' at a cancer benefit, which Andy Taylor of Duran Duran put together. We move on to delve into the hidden secrets of The Police's Synchronicity album and Paul McCartney's bass contribution to The Rolling Stones' new album, Hackney Diamonds. But that's not all, we also navigate the surprising connections between iconic albums, shedding light on how Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger lent their voices to each other's music. Impressively, we dive into the influences of our upbringing, reminiscing about the Ramones' third studio album, 'Rocket to Russia', and The The's unforgettable song 'Uncertain Smile'. We reflect on how these unforgettable tunes formed the soundtrack of our youth and school dances. Lastly, we reflect on the emotional gravity of break-up mixtapes and the songs that helped us navigate the stormy seas of heartbreak. So, are you ready to take a walk down memory lane with us? Tune in and let the magic of music transport you back in time!

Playlist:"When Sly Calls", Michael Franks"Maxine", Donald Fagen"We've Only Just Begun", The Carpenters"Golden Lady", Stevie Wonder

Once it gets to be after midnight, does anybody really know what time it is? Is that the time that you realize that green eyed gypsy was actually a black magic woman? That's when things got super bad and from the heavens came fire and rain. All you could do was cry the tears of a clown. First of all, my songs are basically co-dependent anthems. I write Ouch Mommy Pick Me Up and Love Me songs. -- Composer Paul Williams Yeah, but Paul, they're great songs we can all sing (except maybe "Evergreen," written for Barbra) like "We've Only Just Begun," "An Old Fashioned Love Song," "Rainy Days and Mondays," and "The Rainbow Connection." They make us happy. Heck, "The Love Boat" theme may have been the best part about the show. Paul Williams, a longtime Long Beacher, emceed the Grammy Museum's 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame concert, so in the past few episodes, we've heard him talking with other musicians about music. Now, he gets to tell his stories and sing his songs. Support for this podcast comes from Gordon and Dona Crawford, who believe that quality journalism makes Los Angeles a better place to live; and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American people. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Paul Williams, Legendary Composer, Lyricist, Actor and AuthorAbout Harvey's Guest:Paul Williams is one of the most beloved and respected music creators in the world today. A lyricist and composer who has won an Oscar Award, three Grammy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, an Ivor Novello International Award, and earned induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, his songs, from “We've Only Just Begun” and “You and Me Against the World” to “An Old Fashioned Love Song” and “The Rainbow Connection,” have touched millions of people for generations. As President and Chairman of the Board of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), he is also a leading spokesman for music creators in the digital age.Williams' standards have been recorded by such diverse musical icons as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, David Bowie, Tony Bennett, The Carpenters, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Willie Nelson, Gonzo and Kermit The Frog. Although Williams is widely known as an actor in dozens of films and on television, it is his musical legacy that continues to inspire. His songs and scores have received six Oscar, nine Grammy, six Golden Globe and two Emmy nominations. “The Rainbow Connection,” from the children's classic The Muppet Movie, is one of two Williams' songs that grace the American Film Institute's List of Top Movie Songs of All Time; the second, “Evergreen,” is from the award-winning Barbra Streisand/ Kris Kristofferson remake of A Star Is Born. Additional song scores include the cult favorites Phantom of the Paradise and Ishtar, as well as The Muppet Christmas Carol, Bugsy Malone, and Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas, the latter of which has now been adapted for the stage. Paul created the story and wrote the songs for Disney's Emmy-nominated A Muppets Christmas: Letters To Santa and penned the music and lyrics for Garry Marshall's theatrical sensation Happy Days. His recent work has remained wonderfully diverse, having co-written “Beyond” and “Touch” (which he also performed, receiving a Grammy as Featured Artist) on Daft Punk's chart-topping, ‘Album of the Year' Random Access Memories; and writing with Gustavo Santaolalla for the animated film, The Book of Life which received a World Soundtrack Award for their “Apology Song”. They also collaborated on Guillermo del Toro's stage musical adaptation of Pan's Labyrinth. In addition to music creators' rights, Paul is also passionate about recovery, and works tirelessly to destigmatize alcoholism and addiction. His career, life, and work in recovery have been chronicled in the acclaimed documentary, Paul Williams Still Alive, for which Paul wrote the critically acclaimed title track. Sober 30 years, his humorous observations of life, love, and creativity, augmented by the education and knowledge he gained through his studies and certification from UCLA as a Certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor, has been shared in a best-selling book co-written by Tracey Jackson, entitled Gratitude and Trust: Six Affirmations That Will Change Your Life which was featured on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday. It is the lyrics from Bugsy Malone that aptly sum up his philosophy: “You give a little love and it all comes back to you; You're gonna' be remembered for the things that you say and do”. As a devoted husband to writer Mariana Williams and proud father, Paul considers his son Cole, and daughter Sarah, to be his best work. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/https://www.paulwilliamsofficial.com/https://twitter.com/impaulwilliams #PaulWilliams #harveybrownstoneinterviews

SUMMARY This is a special episode that goes over some listener and group questions about Adventures in Erylia. In true AinE discussion fashion, we took those simple questions and embellished them into lengthy wandering discussions. Check the bottom of the show notes for a breakdown of questions and some of the topics we wandered off to. SHOW SPONSORS This episode is brought to you by Gabe and Jeff, over at Inter-Party Conflict, Fred on Fyre, Evora Dawn, and Pwrful Condor. We didn't do any specific shout outs, but I did grab a few of the specific things we talked about to include them here. Zee Bashew – You cannot get rid of cursed dice. You hide them and they are passed down to someone when you die. C4 Labs – Local Company that makes RPG related products. Chantalle has bought into their gear dice tray and a rolling tower and Christa has bought a cool wood and acrylic coaster. Dungeon in a Box – Chris runs an off mic campaign for the group as a way to play more casually using Dungeon in a Box. We are only a few boxes in to the first campaign that he has, but at this point he has gotten 2 full campaigns. It has been great for helping him through prep time as it comes with a small, focused, booklet module, premade maps, and minis for the important encounters. As a player it is interested because they have also included some campaign long perks for us to unlock and use in the game. The hit song "We've Only Just Begun" by The Carpenters told a love story. But many of its lyrics mirror what believers experience in their faith walk also: so many roads to choose, start out walking and learn to run, finding a place where there's room to grow. Regardless of whether we're new to our faith walk, mature believers, or even non-believers, we all have a calling. Too often, we try to put our calling in a box and give it man-made schedules and deadlines, when in reality, it goes on throughout our life.In this episode, I'll share about how we can avoid that pitfall and how it's more about obedience in our calling than deadlines or perfection. Scriptures highlighted include selections from Hebrews 12 and Isaiah 40.

What began as a Christmas present to a high school crush in 1944 turned into a #1 Christmas hit more than 25 years later. Here are things you didn't know about Merry Christmas Darling, by The Carpenters. Merry Christmas, Darling was recorded in 1970 by The Carpenters. It went to #1 on Billboard’s Christmas chart in 1970, 1971 and 1973. It started off as a high school crush. The original lyrics were written in 1944 by an 18-year-old named Frank Pooler about a girl he had a crush on at the time. Frank Pooler was a high schooler in Onalaska, Wisconsin. In the summer of ‘44, Frank spent all his free time with a girl he was smitten with – the younger sister of the Onalaska High School Band and Choir director. Even after the summer was over, Frank kept thinking about this girl. Frank hadn’t written many songs, but he wanted to write one for her. He once told The LaCrosse Tribune newspaper “I was 18 and the hormones were raging.” Unfortunately, before he gave her his present, they broke up. But Frank held on to those lyrics. Flash forward 22 years, Frank was a choral director at California State University at Long Beach and there were two siblings in his class: Karen and Richard Carpenter. The Carpenters were having some success getting local gigs and asked their professor if he had ideas for something they could do at Christmas. They were tired of singing the same standards over and over and wanted something new. Pooler passed on lyrics to the Christmas song he wrote when he was a teenager. Richard Carpenter took the lyrics, but wrote a different melody for them. The song we now know was co-written by two 18-year-old guys, a generation apart. The Carpenters went on to a lot more than just playing local gigs and by 1970, they charted their first two hits: Close to You and We’ve Only Just Begun. Still tight with his music teacher, Richard Carpenter called Frank Pooler and invited him to a recording studio at A&M Records. When Frank arrived, Richard pushed play and Frank couldn’t believe it. He didn’t recognize it right away but about 10 seconds later, he was totally floored. Frank Pooler died in 2013, but before he did, he had a chance to track down that girl he wrote the song for. Again, telling The Lacrosse Tribune, that they got together and the subject of the song came up. She knew that he had written the song, but Frank asked her if she knew he had written that song about her. She said “no…but now I have a treasure.” Thanks for joining us - don’t forget to hit subscribe because we’ve got more stories & videos coming!
