One of this Broadway season's most talked about shows is the new, Jamie Lloyd directed revival of SUNSET BOULEVARD. The production, which was first seen at the Savoy Theatre in the West End, stars Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond and Tom Francis as Joe Gillis. Despite the show's success and buzz, however, it was recently announced that the run would conclude in July, shortly after this year's Tony Awards. Is this the conclusion of what was always intended to be a limited run, or the result of recasting challenges? Let's talk about it...•00:00 | introduction03:37 | overview / news06:43 | the reasons why12:14 | the impact15:33 | what happens next?•get in person / live stream tickets to see MickeyJoTheatre LIVE at the Phoenix Arts Club:https://phoenixartsclub.com/events/mickeyjotheatre-live/•About Mickey-Jo:As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. SEASON 3 EPISODE 113: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (SPECIAL COMMENT): The reason Trump’s Team of Idiot Rivals sent each other their war plans on Signal wasn't to keep them secret from the Senate, or from future investigations it was to keep them secret from TRUMP. They no longer TRUST Trump. They no longer think Trump UNDERSTANDS what’s going on. There WAS a work-around – AROUND TRUMP. They are CUTTING TRUMP OUT. I'm NOT defending any of these sloppy, stupid, dangerous, morons. But behind their blithering incompetence is the WHY. WHY did they conduct this Signal Chat? Because they have established at least one Ghost Mechanism to allow Trump’s cabinet to try to get something done without him destroying the world (yet) and if THAT’S the case the POINT of this is: you have a president whose own people think he is now a complete FEEB, that he can not function, and cannot be trusted not to do something at least disastrously stupid, IF that thing requires him to do anything more than blather for 40 minutes and morph slowly into Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. We need a whole new president, like, later today. This guy’s nuts. Also, they can all be charged with espionage under 18 U-S Code 793 “Gathering, transmitting or LOSING defense information."And a German newspaper found live mobile numbers and email addresses for Waltz and Gabbard and Hegseth. I’ll circle back to that. Also Waltz and Gabbard and Hegseth are three of the biggest idiots in this nation’s history. And I’m going to go further out on a limb and answer the MOST intriguing, MOST unaddressed question of this entire mess: why in the hell would the name of the editor of The Atlantic pop up automatically in the auto-composition in the phone of National Security Adviser Mike Waltz? Huh? Is MY name in there too? How about Jasmine Crockett? Goldberg was in Waltz's phone because Waltz put him there, and Waltz is denying it because Trump will fire him if he believes that's true. The other issues here are all valid and intriguing and as a story, boy did they hit the cloud just right and we got 77 inches of snow, this story has TWICE as much engagement world wide as any other news story this year. But the NEWS here is, this is NOT a Trump plan to keep reality from America. THIS is an AMERICAN plan to keep reality… from TRUMP. B-Block (31:30) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: American governments mishandle information as if that's what they were hired. It's been true since the Confederacy dropped Robert E. Lee's battle plans on the ground in Maryland in 1862. It was true when the Bush Administration spent a day unable to send me an email, and instead wound up revealing to me all the people inside NBC News that Bush could count on to give him favorable coverage. C-Block (51:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A Pennsylvania legislator is dumber than she looks. She's touting her career 100% Score from...The John Birch Society. Steve Bannon has finally been broken - he is caveating his own violent imagery. And Bill Maher keeps growing, keeps innovating, keeps finding new ways to make an idiot out of himself. This one involves Kid Rock and Trump.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We'll explore everything that makes Sunset Boulevard a musical masterpiece—from its soaring score and unforgettable performances to its behind-the-scenes drama and cultural impact. You'll find out why Patti Lupone (allegedly) tore her dressing room apart, named her pool the “Andrew Lloyd Webber Memorial,” and what ignited one of the biggest feuds in Broadway history! Join us as we delve into the show's origins, its many legendary Normas, and how it continues to captivate audiences decades after its premiere. So…are you ready for your close-up on Sunset Boulevard? And join us over on our Facebook and Instagram pages to tell us what you think!
Tonight, we'll read an excerpt from Charles Dickens “Great Expectations” where young Pip visits the mysterious Miss Havisham at her decaying mansion. There he meets Estella, a beautiful but scornful girl who treat him with cold disdain, making him painfully aware of his lower social status. Miss Havisham, frozen in time since being jilted at the altar, encourages Estella to toy with Pip's emotions. This encounter leaves Pip deeply ashamed of his humble background, planting the seed of his desire to become a gentleman. Miss Havisham's tragic and eerie presence has left a lasting impact on literature, film television and music. She appears in Havisham by Carol Ann Duffy, which reimagines her bitter longing, and influences characters like Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard and Bertha Mason in Jane Eyre. Artists like Tori Amos and Florence and The Machine reference her ghostly figure in music, while The Simpsons parody her infamous heartbreak and decay, solidifying her as a timeless gothic archetype. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus! Hello everyone and welcome to today's episode of Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews. It's more music and memories with singer and actress Petula Clark. And I emphasize actress because I saw Petula star, in London, as Norma Desmond in a performance of “Sunset Boulevard.” She was magnificent. You all know her from her timeless hits, most written by British composer Tony Hatch. Her first number one song was inspired by the energy and excitement on the streets of New York. “My Love” was another song written by Hatch for Clark. It relates a deep, personal expression of love and promising devotion and shows an emotional side to the singer. “I Know a Place” was recorded in London, where most of her hits were made. Hatch used a catchy piano riff and brass section which made it lively and upbeat. Her music conveyed a carefree feeling and a celebration of life. Petula Clark's career spanned generations. She is an artist from the golden age of pop to Broadway, television, and beyond, making her a beloved figure in entertainment. It was early in the morning in Las Vegas and I was as surprised as she was when she answered the phone.
When the film starts, its two leads are already dead, more or less. Silent Screen legend Norma Desmond's career is dead, and because she's nothing more than her career, the best she can do is linger in the tomb of her former glory, hoping for a resurrection. And failed screenwriter Joe Gillis quite literally enters the film as a corpse, so, as the film's narrator, he has no choice but to tell his story in flashback. Thus, it's safe to say that both Norma and Joe are, well, fatally disadvantaged in the realization of their respective dreams. And yet, both achieve a kind of post-mortem success—Norma as the star of one last film, and Joe as the writer of one last, great, highly-personal tale. (In an expression of what might be the screenwriter's secret fantasy, he even gets to star in it, to boot.) How is such life after death possible? Arguably only through the magic of celluloid, a medium ghoulishly capable of preserving humans precisely as they are—which all too soon becomes as they were. What can the contrast between silent and talking pictures teach us about the nature of film itself? And how might it reflect the age-old rivalries between word and image, movement and stasis, the living and the dead? Wes & Erin discuss Billy Wilder's 1950 masterpiece, "Sunset Boulevard."

This week, Bryan and Dave are ready for their close-up as they address a listener request to explore Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard through the lens of horror and cult and, well, they don't exactly pull it off but they do turn in a deep dive into Hollywood's silent era, the golden age of sound, and how it manages to keep up the fabulous illusion of fantasy with a ruthless stranglehold on every piece of machinery that surrounds it and supports it, including the very people that make it all possible. Sunset Boulevard is a drag queen's dream come true. Silent star, Gloria Swanson returns to the screen to portray the larger-than-life fallen star, Norma Desmond with grand sweeping gestures and some of the most quotable dialog in Hollywood history. Every aspect of this movie is lifted up and supported by every other piece. From Billy Wilder's writing and direction, to the photography of John Seitz, to the costuming of Edith Head, to the score provided by Franz Waxman. Join us for a deep dive into one of the greatest movies ever produced by Hollywood. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message
Nicole Scherzinger became famous as part of The Pussycat Dolls - one of the biggest selling female groups of all time - but it almost didn't work out that way. For years, she was a jobbing singer and dancer who learned how to deal with rejection from a succession of failed auditions. Yet her resilience - and her work ethic - shone through. Now, after a highly acclaimed run in London, Nicole is set to storm Broadway as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. We spoke about the curse of perfectionism and her struggles with being in the present; how she stayed for too long in past romantic relationships and how her role as a judge on X Factor helped form One Direction, which means Nicole is, in fact, indirectly responsible for Harry Styles. And for that, we can thank her forever… As always, I'd LOVE to hear about your failures. Every week, my guest and I choose a selection to read out and answer on our special subscription offering, Failing with Friends. We'll endeavour to give you advice, wisdom, some laughs and much, much more. Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! EPISODE 23 - “I Coulda Been a Contender: Classic Casting That Almost Happened” - 02/19/2024 It is well documented that the film “Gone With The Wind” started filming before an actress was cast in the lead role of Scarlett O'Hara. Producer DAVID O. SELZNICK made a spectacle out of who would win the coveted role. It became a national obsession. He considered everyone from TALLULAH BANKHEAD to BETTE DAVIS to LUCILLE BALL. He eventually narrowed the field to three finalists: PAULETTE GODDARD, JOAN BENNETT, and JEAN ARTHUR. But in the eleventh hour, a new contender, an unknown Brit named VIVIEN LEIGH, swept in and won the role. Listen as we discuss, debate, and guffaw over other casting choices that almost happened in some of your favorite film classics. Alright Mr. DeMille, they're ready to Babble! On today's episode of FilmBabble, Charlie and Antonio take a quick detour onto SUNSET BOULEVARD, the 1950 classic chock-full of romance, intrigue, and.... murder? Take a seat, order a coffee, and listen up! Intro/outro music: "Main Title from 'The Wild Bunch'", composed by Jerry Fielding. SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950), written by Charles Brackett, Billy Wilder, and D.M. Marshman Jr., directed by Billy Wilder, cinematography by John Seitz, featuring William Holden, Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stroheim, Nancy Olson, and Cecil B. DeMille
When you think of film noir, you might think of “The Maltese Falcon,” starring Humphrey Bogart as the hard-boiled private detective Sam Spade. Or maybe “Sunset Boulevard,” starring Gloria Swanson as the aging, deranged silent-film star Norma Desmond. But there are also noir westerns. None is more celebrated than the 1948 "Blood on the Moon," starring Robert Mitchum. It's a classic Western immersed in the film noir netherworld of double crosses, government corruption, shabby barrooms, gun-toting goons, and romantic betrayals. Documentarian, producer and film noir expert Alan K. Rode joins Russell and Alan to talk about the movie and his eponymous book, “Blood on the Moon.”

Watch/Listen to this and all episodes ad free by joining the ITBR Patreon for only $5 a month! patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom Dr. Ryan Donovan, Assistant Professor of Theater Studies at Duke University, enters the ITBR to discuss Broadway's complicated history with LGBTQ+ representation and different sized bodies. Right away they both gush over their mutual love for Betty Buckley and talk about Nicole Scherzinger's performance as Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard." Then, Ryan explains how he became a professional dancer and then decided to transition from his NYC performance career to enrolling in the CUNY Graduate Center's PhD in Theater program. Ryan is extremely transparent about the difficulty of securing a Humanities faculty position at a university, and he provides advice as well as discussing with Andrew other career avenues for PhD grads. Interestingly, being an academic and a performer are very similar! Ryan provides a critique of how Broadway has privileged certain bodies over others, and he turns to "A Chorus Line," "Hairspray," and "Dreamgirls" for his argument. Then, Andrew asks Ryan why so many straight men have played queer male roles on Broadway, and why there's still a lack of nuanced queer Broadway narratives. Like Dr. Stacy Wolf, David Armstrong, and Jesse Green's episodes, Ryan takes us backstage to look at new approaches to understand Broadway's history with the LGBTQ+ community. SEASON 2 EPISODE 49: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump has already violated Judge Arthur Engoron's gag order and if Engoron actually WAS contemplating finding him in contempt and putting him in jail for 30 days he should damn well do it and do it NOW – and if he WASN'T, he ought to expand the gag order and specify that if Trump breaks it again, he WILL spend a month behind bars. Yesterday, he posted quote “the judge fraudulently reduced the value of Mar-a-Lago and other assets in order to make their fake case more viable.”During the lunch-break he said of Engoron “he's a Democrat judge, he has no choice, he's run by the Democrats” thus accusing the judge both of fraud and of political corruption. The gag order precludes Trump from public comments about “any members of my staff” and it is not twisting logic nor semantics too strongly to note that the judge COUNTS as a member of his own staff. So step five is the judge imposing the serious sanctions. By statute it would be contempt of court and under New York State Law article 19 section 751 contempt of court is punishable by – I regret to tell you CAPITAL PUNISHMENT does NOT apply under article 19 section 751 – it's punishable by fine not exceeding one thousand dollars or imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both. At the discretion of the judge. And if Judge Engoron really wants to make the argument that he is not a member of his own staff he needs to broaden the gag order immediately. Because you, or I, or Hunter Biden, or Joe Biden, or Jesus Christ fresh off the court would have already amassed a thousand 30-day sentences for the kind of stuff Donald Trump has gotten away with, abusing and degrading and insulting and harassing and threatening and undermining and sabotaging and lying about the judicial system. Meanwhile, Rudy Giuliani's Georgia lawyers have bailed out on him. On the other hand he got the kind of publicity he craves. The New York Times has published 3,109 devastating words OVER Maggie Haberman's byline and UNDER the headline “Giuliani's Drinking, Long A Fraught Subject, Has Trump Prosecutors' Attention.” The Times writes they quote “have shown an interest in the drinking habits of Mr. Giuliani… (they've) questioned witnesses about Mr. Giuliani's alcohol consumption as he was advising Mr. Trump, including on election night… Mr. Smith's investigators have also asked about Mr. Trump's level of awareness of his lawyer's drinking as they worked to overturn the election… The answers to those prompts could complicate any efforts by Mr. Trump's team to lean on a so-called advice-of-counsel defense… if such guidance came from someone whom Mr. Trump knew to be compromised by alcohol, especially when many others told Mr. Trump definitively that he had lost, his argument could weaken… several people at the White House on election night (the evening when Mr. Giuliani urged Mr. Trump to declare victory despite the results) have said that the former mayor appeared to be drunk, slurring and carrying an odor of alcohol. ‘The Mayor was definitely intoxicated' Jason Miller”… said. The Trump/Smith angle is fascinating. Because apparently you can't use an advice-of-counsel defense if your counsel is so drunk he could be considered at risk for spontaneous combustion. B-Block (19:21) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Institute of Economic Affairs has figured out "the future of journalism." It's four Matthews and no women, according to them. Jonathan Turley isn't just flubbing the big stuff; he got Steve Martin's name wrong. And the Trojan horse "news" site "The Messenger" has partnered with an AI company to rank the most reliable news organizations. And you're right: Glenn Beck's "The Blaze" can be trusted. "The New York Times" cannot. C-Block (25:35) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Saturday will be the 48th anniversary of the first broadcast I ever did that had both sponsors and an audience. It was preceded by the elders of the Cornell University radio station sports department playing a trick on me that would be repeated four years later when I made my network debut. I can laugh now. Then? I had two out-of-body experiences. Happily the 1975 WVBR-FM broadcast still exists, so I've tacked it on to the end of this segment. And yes: I mispronounced my own name.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
