Tempest in a barcode: how rapidly can we (and should we) identify new species?

How do biologists categorize species? What's the best and quickest way to describe millions of unknown species? On this episode, we talk with Michael Sharkey, an entomologist and taxonomist who spent much of his career at the University of Kentucky, and is now the director of the Hymenoptera Institute. Since its inception, taxonomy has relied on careful morphological analysis of specimens to delineate species. In the past few decades, the COI “barcode” region of the mitochondrial genome has become a key additional piece of genetic evidence used to characterize species. In a much-discussed 2021 paper, Michael and colleagues used barcoding to identify over 400 new species of braconid wasps. The backlash from scientists who adhere to traditional taxonomic methods was swift, and at times harsh, with critics claiming that relying primarily on COI to define species is simply unacceptable. Sharkey, however, remains convinced that taxonomy should embrace molecular tools, especially because millions of species are yet to be discovered and rates of extinction are ramping up. We talk with Michael about how many insect species there are, how barcoding can make taxonomy accessible to more scientists, and what the future of taxonomy might look like.  Cover art: Keating Shahmehri

Michael Sharkey, a podcast professional, radio programmer and talent coach joins the show today to discuss how he voluntarily left the media world in 2014 after 25 years and the life-changing experiences that came after. Together they discuss why audio is so powerful, how to understand your relationship with fear and why it is important to honour your fire in the belly. KEY TAKEAWAYS Start with a podcast, and then from that podcast you can move on doing different things with video such as Zoom chats or videoing yourself promoting your podcast. You can then have your podcast transcribed which allows people to identify which parts of the episode they would like to listen to. In the spectrum of conversation and the dialogue we have as humans, there is something that spiritual leaders throughout history always bring up, which is, that if we spend our life helping others, we will find true happiness. Happiness doesn't live in fancy cars or big houses, it lives when helping others. We all have a gift, and some people realise this and others don't. One of the saddest things to see is people working so hard in a job they hate because they need to pay their mortgage and feed their families. That person has a mission but that mission has been suppressed by culture and society. Nobody is going to overcome fear. You need to understand what your relationship is with fear. Wait and see how your story unfolds and be okay with the outcome. Fire in the belly is passion. This means that you have a passion that you want to share as well as uncovering other people's passion. Passion is that fire. It is important to understand and honour your fire in the belly. It is an extraordinary thing and as we uncover it we find some of the answers to our bigger questions. There is a reason why people have gut instincts.   BEST MOMENTS “The people listening to Fire In The Belly are eavesdropping on this conversation. If we do it right, they can walk away with something that they can digest and think about regardless of where the conversation goes.” “Audio can be so powerful.” “Serving others is what brings me the most joy. It is what I love to do.” “The answer lies in just staying present.”   ABOUT THE GUEST Michael Sharkey: “What happens when you spend a lifetime in the media and walk away voluntarily? You hear radio differently and see the media world for its opportunities and faults. After spending 25 years in broadcast radio, running commercial radio stations (most recently for Cox Media Group), I took a sabbatical in early 2014. While the experience for me and my family was life-changing, I knew this experience would give me the distance I needed to chart a path forward for my career in radio/media. I once heard the expression, "when you're inside the bottle, you can't read the label." This applied to me when I was on the radio. When I walked away, I got outside the bottle, read the label and knew the direction to go. My takeaways from this time moving forward: Radio is still meaningful, it's just being programmed poorly (mostly by executives). Spoken word is incredibly powerful and growing daily with the rise of podcasting. If 20-34 year olds spend 82% of every day staring at their smartphone, you better make the radio experience meaningful for them on this device. Finally, if you want to bring radio to Millennials, you have to unlearn everything you've ever learned about radio and execute it completely differently. The Spotify generation wants radio (I've researched this), but you have to give it to them in ways you're not currently thinking of.”   ABOUT THE HOST The ‘Mighty Pete Lonton' from the ‘Mighty 247' company is your main host of ‘Fire In The Belly'. Pete is an Entrepreneur, Mentor, Coach, Property Investor, and father of 3 beautiful girls. Pete's background is in Project Management and Property, but his true passion is the ‘Fire in The Belly' project itself. His mission is to help others find their potential and become the mightiest version of themselves. Pete openly talks about losing both of his parents, suffering periods of depression, business downturn and burn-out, and ultimately his years spent not stoking ‘Fire In the Belly'. In 2017, at 37 years of age that changed, and he is now on a journey of learning, growing, accepting, and inspiring others. Pete can connect with people and intuitively asks questions to reveal a person's passion and discover how to live their mightiest life. The true power of ‘Fire In The Belly' is the Q&A's - Questions and Actions! The ‘Fire In The Belly' brand and the programme is rapidly expanding into podcasts, seminars, talks, business workshops, development courses, and rapid results mentoring. In today’s episode of the As Told by Nomads Podcast, join me and my guest, Michael Sharkey, as we talk about the power and importance of storytelling. Michael Sharkey is a podcaster, radio veteran, and coach with vast experience in the audio industry. Now, with the rise of podcast listenership, Michael helps entrepreneurs find their voices by confidently giving them the ability to create unique podcasts. Today, he shares his wealth of knowledge to develop the audience we want using the right tools we need. Also, if you are looking to start a podcast of your own, feel free to check out Michael’s gift in the links below!Sharing Your Uniqueness in Service of OthersPodcasting is not about finding a good microphone and talking into it for hours on end. It is about finding your voice and telling your story. But it is not easy to find your voice when you are just starting. Hence, if you plan on starting a podcast yourself, the best place to start is to know what you want to talk about—and I mean, not just anything under the sun. It should be something you genuinely care about because it will help you find your voice and share a uniqueness you may have never known you had. Michael Sharkey said it best with a quote from Larry Winget, “Find your uniqueness and exploit it in service of others.” To Michael, this quote encompasses the truth of podcasts. In podcasting, everyone has an opportunity to find their uniqueness. But the best part is, when they share that uniqueness, others who identify with it will be inspired to do the same. In the end, everybody deserves a chance to share their story, and who knows, your story might just inspire someone else to share theirs.Outline of the episode:[03:25] How Michael got started and why he pursued the audio industry.[05:40] The power of storytelling and the importance of critical thinking.[08:29] Why he took a sabbatical after leaving radio and how it changed his life.[11:25] How traveling is essential in self-discovery, learning, and development.[12:30] Finding your voice amid vulnerability and exploiting in service of others.[15:02] A step-by-step discussion on how to start your podcast and the value of knowing your uniqueness.[19:35] How 100% of podcasts evolve and why it is okay to diverge from the initial plan.[22:19] The secret to every great interviewer and why you should treat interviews like any conversation.[24:33] How the only barrier to podcasting is your mindset and why everyone deserves to tell their story.[26:57] Why quality still matters when starting a podcast and how your podcast can sound just like your favorites.[30:47] How Michael Sharkey developed his Podcast Roadmap and why he enjoys sharing information with the world.[35:41] How your podcast can take any shape you want it to be.[39:26] Michael’s advice for aspiring podcasters and storytellers about being proud of your uniqueness and sharing it with the world. "It’s not easy but for me it’s very enjoyable to put on these wigs and be these people. One mainly because I am an entertainer and I like to entertain people and I like what these characters do to people, and to me. But then in a deeper sense I’m very much exploring and reclaiming a lot things about myself that were taken from me as a kid. And that’s a slow, slow process." Paul Soileau simply considers himself an artist even though he does practice and inhabit many different forms of art, theatre, performance, music, dance, and ways of self expression. More than creating a singular piece of art he is utilizing his body, voice, creativity, and soul to craft a unique and inspiring experience for his audience, one that he would want to witness himself. Rebecca Havemeyer and Christeene Vale are his most well known and traveled characters. They couldn’t be more different but the motivation behind them both comes from a simliar place. In addition to being very entraining and well loved, each character is a way for Paul to challenge his fears, expand his mind, and explore the deep, dark, and suppressed parts of his past and identity. Rebecca is the wealthy old Hollywood grande dame and Christeene is a dark, dangerous, and sexual creature that challenges gender and societal norms with a twisted innocence. By trying to get out of his own way he is making room for these other personalities to have a life of their own. But at the end of the night when he takes off the wigs and makeup he’s back to just Paul. Acknowledging and exploring his own character becomes just as important, and is integral to inspiring and keeping the others alive. At the same time these others serve to force Paul to evolve more into the person he wants to be. And there is an integrity in what these characters say and do and a responsibility and commitment to walk one's talk, on and off the stage. He’s preaching to the choir of the audience and himself at the same time. Surviving an intense previous two months has led Paul to a feeling of accomplishment and clarity. Christeene released a new album (Basura) at the same time that Rebecca had her first full-on one woman show (Winkie). Paul put himself through the gauntlet and in the process learned what is important to him. And the more he listens to the things he is making, and his gut, the closer he gets to better self acceptance and finding all of the potential he still has buried in the backyard of his restrictive catholic school years and the trauma of hurricane Katrina. I think its fair to say Paul is a genius and is super talented. It was fun getting to know his work in anticipation of the interview. What he creates is appreciated and followed world-wide and he’s got a busy year ahead touring and promoting Christeene’s new album. Because of my Podcast: Clay From Fish Nerds Clay has had some very cool things happen on his Fish Nerds Show including having a touring opera singer invite clay to do a show at a theater. Check out Clay at www.fishnerds.com The Sometimes Condescending Nature of Radio People Towards Podcasting There are some really cool people from the radio industry that get podcasting. People like Eric K Johnson from Podcast Talent Coach and the Podcast Review Show, Michael Sharkey from the Talent Show, Jeff Brown From Read to Lead, Tim Sinclair from Ringr and My Worst Interview Ever, and Phillip Keller from Blind Faith live GET PODCASTING. I don't want to lump all radio people together. There are times when someone comes across with a condescending tone of voice. It comes across like "Podcasting is a fad, or not "Real Broadcasting." They seem to think that now that the "Real" broadcasters are here and it's time to step aside and let the "real" broadcasters take over. I recently listened to The Sound Off Show with Matt Cundill. In the episode, he was talking about how a recent professional survey company had polled listeners in Canda.Matt asks, "Is the hype on podcasting just a lot of noise and it takes a study like this one to figure out where it really ranks?" What a douchebag. AS if study after study showing podcasting's slow but steady growth, and radio's slow and steady decline aren't enough. This is what I say "Radio People" with a negative slant. This is what I'm basing my opinion on, and when I say "Some radio people have a bias," this is why. How Improv Skills Can Help Your Podcast Today I have Chad Elliot from the Off the Cuff Comedy Improv Podcast, and http://seattleimprovclasses.com/ I appeared on episode 7 and was SUPER nervous as I didn't get this I would be doing improv on his show. I have never done improv. Luckily Chad sent me his book Improv Manifesto: 7 Easy Steps to Confidence, Creativity, and Charisma - Even If You're Shy! (Think On Your Feet Under Pressure with Tools of Improvisational Theater & Improv Comedy.) which helped me get ready. Here are some things I learned. Talk with confidence, even when you're not confident about your answer. You will be amazed at how your brain "Fills in the blank" when you start talking. The key to improv is listening to every word of the person you are working with. If things horrible, it is a learning experience and you will handle it better next time, and will build skills to help get through it better. You can see results when you start doing one improve exercise What Does This Do With Podcasting? When you are 100% focused on what your guest/co-host is saying you are better prepared to ask a better follow up question (than if you had a premade lit of questions). If you have a bad interview, living through this experience shows you that you will survive and equips you to handle it better in the future You can contemplate different stories to pull from an idea (see The Story Factor: Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion through the Art of Storytelling by Annette Simmons) It builds confidence and can get you our of your comfort zone. This way when podcasting opens the doors to new relationships, you will have the confidence to walk through Face Your Podcasting Fears Chad had a client who said, "You know what I want to do this because I'm scared of it, but I don't want to do it because I'm scared of it." Eric Beach is one of australia’s most unusual and accessible poets. His work has been performed all over the country on trams, ferries and even at the opera house. He has sung at jazz festivals and at railway stations. He is also a playwright and community writer. He has won the NSW premier literary award and the age poetry book of the year award.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QPRMUWtBcwhttp://www.poemhunter.com/eric-beach/  Eric Beach was born in Hastings, New Zealand, in 1947. In Australia Beach quickly established himself as an energetic and somewhat eccentric figure on the poetry scene, and was heavily involved in organising poetry festivals, workshops and readings, and contributing to small magazines. He was well known for his own poetry readings, and became renowned for writing his poems on scraps of paper which he kept crumpled in his pockets.  In 1977 he was one of the founding members of the Poets Union. Besides Melbourne, he also lived in Brisbane and Adelaide, and supported his family by working on the railways. In 1989, Beach moved to Hobart, where he continued his involvement with local writers’ groups and poetry workshops. In 1996, he published his major work, Weeping for Lost Babylon. As well as garnering much favourable critical attention, the book also won the Dinny O’Hearn Poetry Prize for 1996 and was joint winner of the Kenneth Slessor Prize the same year. His poems, sometimes experimental in form, and sometime using the forms of dramatic monologue and prose poems styles, often have a political emphasis. Besides poetry, Beach has also written a number of dramatic works.Poetry CollectionsLyrics & Blues ([Wellington, NZ]: [the Author], [1968])Henry Lawson Petfoods (Sydney: Fragment Press, 1974).Saint Kilda Meets Hugo Ball (St Lucia, Qld: Makar Press, 1974).In Occupied Territory (Cammeray, NSW: Saturday Centre, 1977).A Photo of Some People in a Football Stadium: Poems (Melbourne: Overland, 1978).[with Shelton Lea], Fond Far Wells (Poowong, Vic: Clough Press, [198-]).I Want to be Normal ([Glebe, NSW]: [the Author], 1993).Weeping for Lost Babylon (Sydney: Angus and Robertson and Paper Bark Press, 1996).Red Heart My Country (Lauderdale, Tas: Pardalote Press, 2000).Suggested Further ReadingEric Beach, ‘Oral/Aural Poetry,’ Off the Page Dummy Run (1990).Geoff Page, ‘Utterly From the Heart,’ Five Bells 3.8 (1996): 9–10.Myron Lysenko, et al., ‘Eric Beach, the Man who Talks To Going Down Swinging,’ Going Down Swinging no.14 (1994): 93–113.Michael Sharkey, ‘An Interview with Eric Beach,’ Overland no.111 (1988): 64–71.Michael Sharkey, ‘Beach’s Whimsy,’ Australian Book Review no.182 (1996): 54–55.
