Today we are so excited to share a conversation with Maxim Fedorov, who is the Core Infrastructure Lead at communications giant, WhatsApp! In our chat, Maxim offers such interesting insight and wisdom from a long career in the space, focusing on Erlang and why he views it as such a powerful language for the work at WhatsApp. We also get some backstory from Maxim, looking at his first experiences with computers, his educational background, and some of the work he did leading up to his current position. Our guest does a great job of sharing his thoughts on what he sees as a lack of magic within the Erlang language, why he prefers this, and how the company has managed to scale in such a major way over the past years. We also deal with some more general questions, weighing functional languages against object-oriented ones, useful resource recommendations, and a whole lot more! We finish off this episode with a mini-interview with David Hardwick, who is the current Vice President of Engineering at STORD, so make sure to stay tuned until the end for that! Key Points From This Episode: The beginnings of Maxim's interest in computer science and software development. How Maxim transitioned into the network security field. Maxim's experience with timezones and how this is approached for an app like WhatsApp. Thoughts on why WhatsApp is so popular outside of the United States. How Erlang is used at WhatsApp to power messaging. Probable reasons that Erlang was selected as the language for WhatsApp. Outages and downtime; what constitutes a serious issue for WhatsApp user experience. The massive growth that WhatsApp has seen and how their approach to scaling has evolved. Characteristics of Erlang that make it so well suited to WhatsApp's needs; simplicity and reliability. Maxim's perspective on the issues around programmer education and their results. Functional languages versus object-oriented programming; Maxim's thoughts on strengths and weaknesses. Why Maxim views Erlang as not containing or performing anything magical. Maxim's recommendations for resources when getting started in Erlang! Looking back at Maxim's experiences of tertiary education and the thesis he produced. The scaling of the WhatsApp server; the project that Maxim is most proud of! Rich Gall (@richggall) and Jennifer Riggins (@jkriggins) talk to Lorinda Brandon and Mike Amundsen about APIs and the evolution of the tech industry in the last 30 years in a very special episode - the first to feature two guests. We discussed issues of equality in the industry, in particular how 'women in tech' has emerged only in recent years - Lorinda offers her perspective on what it was like working as a woman in tech in the eighties, and also explains what frustrates her about the way we talk about toxicity in the industry today. We also talked storytelling, and how the stories we tell about technology - and the way we explain technologies - have moved from the purely technical to the user-centric. In the context of APIs, Lorinda and Mike explain, this is particularly important, as it demonstrates not only their ubiquity but also the fact that they are things for which the value is today obvious to many. It wasn't always that way - Lorinda and Mike undoubtedly played a huge role in getting us to where we are now. The episode also looks at the nature of the information ecosystem, and how established experts like Mike and Lorinda transfer and share their knowledge. For Mike this is often about presenting and narrativising problems in books: for Lorinda it's about building relationships with teams in a way that allows her to guide people, to support them to uncover their own solutions. Not only was this a wide-ranging conversation, it was also exceptionally fun, so thanks to Lorinda and Mike. Woah...the big 6-0! As always we have another great show lined up for you all. Enjoy!Manuel agrees that finding diverse talent in tech is a challenge, but it is one that companies must take full front and approach using different strategies. He agrees that dropping a CS degree requirement for software roles makes a lot of sense. At the end of the day companies need engineers that can get the job done. How or where they learned the skills necessary to do the job should not be that important. Manuel also believes that the apprenticeship pattern could work in the tech space as a way to break barriers into the industry. To retain diverse staff, he thinks that the workplace should foster a sense of community. Make a clear statement that the executive/leadership team supports and is involved in programs that promote inclusion. Then encourage grassroots teams or ERGs that are created organically to further build employee relationships.Manuel Martinez-Herrera is the General Counsel at BetterCloud, a B2B SAS company that specializes in SAS Ops. Michael and Guy join me today to talk about what they are doing, how they are working on creating customer journeys and creating unique marketing experiences that don't feel like marketing and the impact of this type of approach on customer engagement and customer experience. This interview follows on from my recent interview – What you do when proactive customer service is in your DNA – Interview with David Politis of BetterCloud – and is number 157 in the series of interviews with authors and business leaders that are doing great things, helping businesses innovate and delivering great service and experience to their customers. NOTE: The audio from Michael and Guy is a little jumpy in places but it is still ok to listen to. The vagaries of technology and telephone line connections! Apologies.

Everything changes when everything changes - so how the hell do you navigate the changing change? In customer success there are varying speeds at which change is occurring. Whether you're moving your Solutions Engineers to your Customer Success Organization (nice call out in the episode, Dave!), building a consulting arm or solidifying the strategic long term direction of your customer success managers or anything/everything in between there's likely a lot going on in your world. So how do you realize the desired state from all of your changes? I sat down with two colossal voices in the field, Dave Duke (Co-Founder & Chief Customer Officer at MetaCX) and Kristi Faltorusso (Vice President of Customer Success at BetterCloud) to learn how change has played a role in their successes. Below are the guiding questions that shaped the discussion. How do you prioritize tactical short term needs while balancing a long term strategy? How would you advise other customer success leaders on how to best prevent analysis paralysis when looking to data to inform your decisions? Do you think customer success organizations are being thoughtful around initiative fatigue? (K)How are you successfully navigating change? What has been your biggest surprise regarding decision making and change in your customer success careers?

This week on the If You Market podcast we talk with Meaghan Sullivan, Senior Customer Marketing Manager at BetterCloud, about Customer Advocacy and why it's always a good idea. Meaghan Sullivan started her career off in Sales operations and Inside sales at NetApp and Cloudera. Her years in sales taught her the importance of building relationships with her customers that go beyond closing the sale and hitting her numbers. She later transitioned into Customer Marketing and Advocacy where the emphasis is on the customer (customer community, sharing the customers’ success and story) as a way of validating solutions, products, and services. Meaghan is currently the Senior Customer Marketing Manager at BetterCloud. Here she focuses on putting the customer in the spotlight and working with the sales organization in order to enable the customer to be successful and celebrate their success with the marketplace.  #ifyoumarket

In the customer success space, the Customer Success formula coined or at least heavily championed by GainSight (CX+CO=CS) has gained a lot of traction over the past year. Despite the growing popularity, I've been shocked to see the many liberal interpretations of both CX and CO. In my opinion, there's one Customer Success leader who seems to have a firm understanding of these components both equally in theory and in practice. It's difficult to execute on both theoretical and practical terms and I argue that it takes a real Customer Success visionary to be able to mange the two effectively.Which brings me to today's guest, Kristi Faltorusso, Vice President of Customer Success at BetterCloud. For those of you in the Customer Success world, you know that Kristi's name is among the most prominent and influential minds in the field. This episode lends a refreshingly open dialogue around Kristi's tactics and strategies as a VP of Customer Success and how she and BetterCloud embrace Customer Success as thoughtful and methodical execution of Customer Experience and Customer Outcomes.

What happens when you release a new product, and none of your customers seem to care? That's what happened to David Politis. He started BetterCloud in 2011, and its simple product was a big hit. But David thought he could go bigger, creating a product that would help companies was a wide variety of their cloud computing needs. So he poured a lot of money and time into building this new product, launched it with great expectations, and... nobody was buying. Panic ensued. His staff began pointing fingers. And David wouldn't come to really understand the problem until he left the office and started talking to customers. That's what changed everything.
