The second verse in the 23rd Psalm is a peculiar one for those of us not accustomed to the undeveloped lands of the Bible. When you read of green pastures and quiet waters you most likely think of Goshen County, WY which produces more beef cattle than any other Wyoming county in our state. When I read Psalm 23, I think of the New Jersey Highlands consisting of lots of green and lots of water. But the green pastures that David had in mind was a dry and rocky set of rolling hills with tough grass sparsely scattered throughout. The grass was so sparsely scattered, that if one of the sheep wandered off, he would most likely starve to death if any of the predators in the region didnt find him first, and depending on the season, water was even more difficult to find. Because sheep are the most helpless of animals; they are not just dependent on the shepherd but are in absolute need of a shepherd for survival. Sometime ago there was a story out of Istanbul that reported the death of four sheep. Their shepherds reportedly neglected their flock by leaving the sheep to roam free so that they could eat breakfast. The sheep followed their leader right off a cliff; one by one, four hundred of them fell nearly 50 feet to their deaths. The loss of sheep was estimated to be $74,000. In the ancient world, shepherding was the least respected of occupations and required the full attention of the shepherd all the time. If a family had sheep, the youngest son was expected to serve as a shepherd. Because David was the youngest of eight sons, his job was to shepherd the sheep for his father Jesse. When David wrote this psalm, he wrote from his own experience, and like all other shepherds, David lived with the sheep. To appreciate this Psalm, we need to understand why it is structured the way that it is. There are five images that include the critical role of the shepherd as he leads, guides, and provides for his sheep; each Sunday, we will consider one of the five images we are given. So that you know where we are going, I will list them for you here: Image #1: The Abundant Life (vv. 2-3a) Image #2: The Secure Life (v. 3b) Image #3: The Hard Life (v. 4) Image #4: The Victorious Life (v. 5) Image #5: The Everlasting Life (v. 6) Today we will consider the first image, which is where the Shepherd of the 23rd Psalm is ultimately leading His sheep, and that is the abundant life. What is the Way to the Abundant Life? For a sheep to lie down four things need to happen: They need to be free of fear, friction, flies, and hunger. Phillip Keller spent eight years as a shepherd before he became a pastor, in his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, he wrote of what it takes to get sheep to lie down: It is almost impossible for sheep to be made to lie down unless four requirements are met. Owing to their timidity they refuse to lie down unless they are free of all fear. Because of the social behavior within a flock sheep will not lie down unless they are free from friction with others of their kind. If tormented by flies or parasites, sheep will not lie down. Only when free of these pests can they relax. Lastly, sheep will not lie down as long as they feel in need of finding food. They must be free from hunger.[1] It is only the shepherd who can provide the kind of trust, peace, deliverance, and pasture that the sheep need. Yet, of the five images in this Psalm, David begins with the one about rest. The first thing that we receive from Yahweh as our Shepherd, is rest. How does He provide us with rest? According to the NASB2020, He lets me lie down in green pastures... He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul... The Hebrew word for lets is the Hebrew word rbṣ and most translations translate this word as make. If you are using the NIV, the ESV, or an older version of the NASB, Psalm 23:2 reads something like this: He makes me lie down in green pastures... So which is it? Does Jesus, as our good Shepherd make us lie down or does He, let us lie down in green pastures? The Hebrew word for lets is both causative and imperfect so literally it can be translated, He causes me to lie down in green pastures... So, why does all matter? Our Shepherd removes from His sheep every agitation and threat that would keep us from the kind of rest we were made for and the rest that we need. However, the presence of Jesus in our lives not only causes us to lie down, but He also takes us to quiet waters; in Hebrew, quiet waters is literally waters of rest. Where the quiet waters are, so there is life for all that surrounds those waters, and where there are green pastures and still waters in the dry and rocky climate of a cursed world, there is renewal. What kind of renewal you ask? The kind that restores the soul of the sheep. The Hebrew word used for restores means to turn back or return. The place that the Psalmist is describing is the place where those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matt. 5:6) will be filled and refreshed by resting in the Shepherd of the 23rdPsalm. It is Jesus who said, Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest (Matt. 11:28). It is the Lord of the 23rd Psalm who said: I am the bread of life; the one who comes to Me will not be hungry, and the one who believes in Me will never be thirsty (John 6:35). The Good Shepherd said, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly (John 10:10). According to Psalm 23, the Christian life begins with rest, and the kind of rest we receive is the abundant life that can only come through Jesus. But what is the abundant life? Is it prosperity in the worlds eyes? Is it the pain free life? What is the abundant life that Jesus came so that we, as His sheep, would have? What Kind of Abundant Life Does the Shepherd Provide? The abundant life is a life rooted in Jesus. The abundant life comes out of the abiding life. So, what is the abiding life you ask? Jesus told us what the abiding life is in John 6:54-56, The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him (John 6:5456). The Greek word for remain is menō. If you are using the ESV or an older version of the NASB, you will see the word abide instead of remain. To remain or abide is to rest in Jesus and to rest in Him is to take up residence in the life of Christ. How does one do that? You do it by taking into your mind, heart, and soul all that Jesus is and all that he taught and commanded us to do. The same Greek word is used in John 15:5, I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. So what does it mean to have the abundant life? Does the abundant life mean that you have a pain free life? If the abundant life means that the Shepherds will for you is to be comfortable with little to no suffering in this life, then what do you do with our Shepherds words to his sheep: In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world (John 16:33b)? The New Living Translation is closer to Jesus point: Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. If the green pastures and quite waters do not include the kind of agitation and trouble that suffering brings, then what do you do with Jesus warning to his disciples: You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, other relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death, and you will be hated by all people because of My name. And yet not a hair of your head will perish (Luke 21:1618). If the green pastures and quiet waters that the Jesus leads his people to does not include suffering and even death, then what do you say to the fathers, the mothers, the children, and the friends of the 70 Christians who were taken from their village at 4am on the morning on February 13th of this year by a rebel group with ties to the Islamic State? They were taken by force to a Protestant church where they were slaughtered with machetes and hammers; those 70 Christians were our brothers and sisters in the faith. They heard the call of Jesus and followed Him (see John 10:14-16), yet when their bodies were discovered, each of them was also beheaded. Where are the green pastures and quiet waters of those 70 beheaded Christians from the Congo if the 23rd Psalm is also for them? Those 70 beheaded brothers and sisters are now included among the martyred saints described in Revelation 6:9-11, When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been killed because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who live on the earth? And a white robe was given to each of them; and they were told that they were to rest for a little while longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers and sisters who were to be killed even as they had been, was completed also. (Rev. 6:911) Those 70 Christians among the masses in heaven who are asking the question: How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who live on the earth? Notice the answer they received: rest for a little while longer, until the number of your fellow servants and their brothers and sisters who are to be killed even as you have been killed, is complete (v. 11). There will be more who will be massacred, butchered, and slaughtered in the name of the Good Shepherd, but that is not the end of their story! In March another 47 Christians from the Congo were martyred for following Jesus, and to date 287 Christians have been killed for their faith since Christmas of 2024. So, where was their green pasture? Where were the quiet waters for those followers of the Good Shepherd? We are given an answer in Revelation 7:9-17. We are told that right now all 287 of those who died for their faith in the Congo sing, and they are joined with other brothers and sisters who followed the Good Shepherd to their deaths, from every nation and all the tribes, peoples, and languages. Today, they shout triumphantly: Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb (Rev. 7:9ff.). But that is not all that we are told, for what they have is infinitely more precious than the comfort and safety we all hope to have in this life. I want to show you something from Revelation 7:13-17 that will help make sense of what is promised to us in the 23rd Psalm: Then one of the elders responded, saying to me, These who are clothed in the white robes, who are they, and where have they come from? 14I said to him, My lord, you know. And he said to me, These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15For this reason they are before the throne of God, and they serve Him day and night in His temple; and He who sits on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. 16They will no longer hunger nor thirst, nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any scorching heat; 17for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes. Do you see the answer for where the green pastures and quiet waters are for those who suffer, especially for those who suffer for their faith in the Good Shepherd? God currently shelters the scores of martyred Christians with His presence according to Revelation 7:15, but do you see what verses 16-17 say and how familiar it sounds to Psalm 23? Lets look at these verses again: They will no longer hunger nor thirst, nor will the sun beat down on them, nor any scorching heat; 17for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes. The reason why these Christians, and every other Christian in heaven no longer hungers or thirsts is because they are in the presence of the Lamb who is their shepherd. The sun no longer beats down on them with its scorching heat because they have been delivered from the wilderness of a cursed world! The Lamb is the spring of water of life, and it is because of the triumph of the Lamb that every tear will be wiped from their eyes. Conclusion Listen, the 70 who were beheaded, those who suffer in this life, and every other Christian who belongs to the Good Shepherd had the green pastures and quiet waters during their life on earth because they had Jesus, and they found that their hunger and thirst for righteousness was satisfied in Him. Although the 70 Christians from the Congo lost their lives, they did not lose what belonged to them, for they have what is promised to every Christian in the 23rd Psalm because they have the Lamb who is their Shepherd. Psalm 23 is not some cute passage for coffee mugs, t-shirts, and memorial cards! It is so much more. If Jesus is your shepherd, you have all that you need in Him. If you have Jesus, then you have the green pastures and quiet waters promised to all whose Lord is their shepherd. My question for you dear friend, is this: Who is the Lamb of God to you? If Jesus is your shepherd, then in what ways are you abiding in Him? How can you expect to experience the kinds of green pastures and quiet waters promised in Psalm 23 if you are not going to Jesus to satisfy the kind of hunger and thirst that only He can satisfy? He had so much to write to them and some of what was in his heart would have to wait until he was face to face with them, but one very important message couldn't wait. One message needs to be addressed immediately and so John picks up pen and paper and writes to the church (the chosen lady) to LOVE one another. John, much older, understands the importance of loving one another and what it means to truly love. For John love was more than an emotion or feeling it was walking in obedience to God's commands and if the church (the chosen lady) could do that then loving each other would not be a problem. He wants the church to know that if you say you love God, you will obey God and if you obey God, you will love others.   Buy "At Your Best" by Carey Nieuwhof: https://amzn.to/3VWpsHz   Buy "A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23" by Phillip Keller: https://amzn.to/3Pos4LG   Buy "Bearing God's Name" by Carmen Imes: https://amzn.to/3j3Zu6t   Read the Didache:  https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0714.htm   Visit our Website: https://yourchurchfriends.rocks/

Whenever you see all the letters in the word LORD capitalized in the Bible it always is our English translation for the Hebrew word, “Yahweh” or “Jehovah”. Who is the Lord God of Israel. Jehovah is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. In John 10 when Jesus said, “I Am the Good Shepherd”, He was saying, I Am Jehovah Rohi. Before we can fully understand and claim that “The LORD is my Shepherd” we need to know what it means that Jesus has said, “I Am Jehovah Rohi”, I Am the LORD your Shepherd”. Our view of Jesus the Christ is often too human and too small, and because it is we are unwilling to allow Him to have authority or control, or much less outright ownership of our lives. First, we need to know and believe that the Bible teaches us the Jesus, the Christ is creator of all things including us. Colossians 1:15-20 tells us that Jesus “is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.” When we really acknowledge that we were created in His image and that He made us, and we are not our own but His, it is then we can truly say that “The LORD is my Shepherd”. We are the apple of His eye. He created us to have a relationship with Him. It is not about religion, rituals, and ceremonies. It is about a personal relationship and intimate fellowship with Him through the blood of His cross! When the LORD is my Shepherd, “it immediately implies a profound yet practical working relationship between a human being and his Maker. It links a lump of common clay to divine destiny. It means a mere mortal becomes the cherished object of divine diligence. And the greater, the wider, the more majestic my concept is of the Christ, the more vital will be my relationship to Him.” When we say with confidence, the LORD is my Shepherd, we are proclaiming with a strong sense of pride, and devotion and admiration, “Look at who my shepherd is, my owner, my manager! He is the LORD Jesus Christ! He created me, and He loves me so much that He paid the price for my sin to reconcile me back to His Father God! Many of the above statements are quotes from Phillip Keller's book, “A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23”. I highly recommend this book as it has greatly helped me to better love and understand the fuller meaning of this beautiful Psalm. I will be using it to help me share these chats on this Psalm over the next few days. Phillip Keller ends his first chapter with these questions. Do I really belong to Him? Do I really recognize His right to me? Do I respond to His authority and acknowledge His ownership? Do I find freedom and complete fulfillment in this arrangement? Do I sense a purpose and deep contentment because I am under His direction? Do I know rest and repose, besides a definite sense of exciting adventure, in belonging to Him? I trust that you can begin to answer all the above questions in a positive way today! God bless!

It's a book in the center of the Bible that reaches right into the center of us. Through examining certain chapters closely, I hope to find comfort, healing, and beautiful aspects of God. Psalm 23 is quite possibly the most well-known set of verses from the Bible. In this deep dive, we explore why having God as our Good Shepherd is truly the best news. As always, we're collecting bits of truth, because our mission is to create a mosaic containing stories and revelations of truth, to see the bigger picture of who God is and what he has for us. ¡Para ti sean la honra y la gloria!* Phillip Keller, citado por John Ortberg, Laurie Pederson y Judson poling en Grace, an Invitation to a Way of Life, Zondervan, 2000, p. 75.

Psalms 23:1-3 says, “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.” In this famous Psalm, God's care for us is compared to a shepherd caring for sheep. Notice the sheep are well fed. They are led to rest in a green, lush pasture. They are also led to water. Someone once told me that sheep will not drink from fast flowing water, especially near rapids. They prefer quiet water. This tells us that God provides for us by providing what is most suitable. But what about the phrase, “He restoreth my soul?” How do you restore the soul of sheep? Do sheep even have souls? What is the meaning of this? The word can mean “soul,” but it can also be translated “life.” I think Phillip Keller gives a good word picture. He says this refers to a sheep that has tumbled onto his back. Evidently, sheep with a large fleece can become stuck on their backs. They kick and flail about. Without help, they may stay in that position until they die. The shepherd comes and restores them to an upright position.* Do you ever feel you've been knocked for a loop? That the events of life have left you flailing about? Remember, God not only provides for our basic needs, he also gets us back on our feet. *Phillip Keller, "He Restoreth My Soul," Excerpts from: A Shepherd Looks At Psalm 23 part 4, Antipas, http://www.antipas.org/commentaries/articles/shepherd_psa23/shepherd_04.html. MOVIE DISCUSSION:  Melvin & Dan rushed to the movie theater to catch the latest Marvel picture, because that's what every good little movie podcast is supposed to do! From enjoying martial arts to pondering the future of Phase Four, and ending with some pipe dreams, check out this episode of Cinematic Doctrine! Topics: Melvin pitches to Daniel an opening for Season 10 Episode 1 of The Office. Daniel talks about how his theater screening for Shang-Chi  was better than Black Widow, except for one weird argument a couple had before the movie started. Contemplating why movie theater bathrooms are always the worst bathrooms on the entire planet. Introducing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings [11:38] Daniel has a soft spot for martial arts flicks. Every MCU Phase seems to have a gripe people collectively complain about. Melvin posits Phase Four's gripe will be a mixture of two things: Not using real sets and overly relying on CGI for backgrounds and settings, and the over-abundance of bloodless violence and deaths. Discussing The Mandarin's "previous outing" in Iron Man 3, and how this version is a nice change to a bonafide racist figure in classic Marvel history. Our curious excitement about where the Ten Rings are from and if they're connected to The Eternals. Melvin hopes future Marvel movies would introduce feelings of dread and hopelessness as a plot mechanic, which often in stories (when done carefully) produces more hope and excitement for future installments.Recommendations: W. The job of the follower, (that's us!), is to believe that we are the object of his affection and to say yes to all that He has done to create a pathway for me to abide in him.

God's Rhyme, back of the book Life is a continuous poem. Through the good times, the bad times, and the times in between, life is poetry. Although it may not always rhyme, our emotions, our thoughts, our wandering, our searching, and especially the answers are the poetry of our lives. God's Rhyme is the poetry on one man's life from the joy of salvation, through the joys and sorrow of everyday life, to the search for a deeper relationship with his God. For those who have found salvation through Jesus, you may find your life in these poems. As Christians, we are not perfect, but we have God's promise of eternal salvation. Maybe you have wandered from the path God has set before you. Maybe you need to know that you are not alone. God's Rhyme will let you know that you are not alone. Maybe you are looking for answers about the life of a Christian. You have seen us in the workplace and so many other places and wonder what we have or wonder why we why we aren't better people. Your answer may be on the pages of God's Rhyme. Wherever you are in your life, know that God loves you. THE GATHERING LAMB  “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us  has turned to our own way; and the Lord has  laid on him the iniquity of us all.  Isaiah 53:6, NIV   The Lamb of God, with God before time, perfect, as is God, in every way, before the words were written in lines Jesus, the unblemished Lamb was there.   Jesus and God, with the Holy Spirit, indivisible, the Trinity; so the Lamb of God is also God, who saves our souls for eternity.   We, living on this earth, a herd of sheep, we wander, are lost not knowing the cost, not knowing, we cause a pain so deep that God sent Jesus to find and save us.   An earthly shepherd has a special one, one of the herd that seeks the wandering,  those sheep that are lost, that have gone astray, returning them home before the day is done.   Our Heavenly Master has sent His Son to find the lost and to gather the strays, to bring us home before the end of days. The Lamb of God, a never ending search.   Before we knew Him He knew who we were, He knew our thoughts, He knew our prayers.   And He knew of our rebellion, Before, He has always known.   Yet He loves us still and He always will. He sent His Son to be the one that would seek us out even as we doubt.   He sent His Son to gather us in, the unblemished Lamb, the Sacrifice, to pay the price, to die for our sins so that with God we are finally put right! Reflection:  The result of Bible study on Tuesday mornings.  The Lamb who gathers us in, who died for our sins. © 2019, God's Rhyme, Tim Carter (We were reading The Shepherd Trilogy by Phillip Keller.) God Still Rhymes, back of the book Life is a continuous poem.  As the poems continue so does the journey.  One day the journey lead him to a fork in the road; one sign pointing to “The World” and the other sign to “The Way, The Truth and The Life.”  He is still on the road he took leading to “The Way, The Truth and the Life.”  However, a strange thing happened on this journey.  The road he took lead him through the world.  But he was not afraid.  Having seen the world through his eyes he was now seeing it through the eyes of God.   Having seen today, he could see tomorrow.  Oh sure, he stumbled, he fell, but there was always a hand reaching out to pick him up and brush him off.  There was always a smile that told him he was loved.  These pages are the poems of his journey, one that continues still.  Maybe it's yours. Have you ever been somewhere and realized you were out of place? What about being out of place in a hard or difficult or dangerous situation? As we continue our series, The Shepherd in the Psalm, JP teaches us about the Shepherd's presence and comfort as we walk with Him. KEY TAKEAWAYS-In moments of trouble and in dark valleys, who you are with really matters.-In times of trouble, God doesn't always protect us (in a fallen world and on this side of death), but He does always promise to comfort us.-The Shepherd is with us in dark valleys.-Sheep are closest to their predators when they walk through valleys; however, they are even closer to their shepherd.-You are either entering a valley, in a valley, or preparing for a valley.-When you enter a valley it's the starting line, not the finish.-Sometimes sheep can't see the Shepherd, but they follow the sheep who are following the Shepherd.-You must keep going when you are in the valley. Put one foot in front of the other and keep going. Don't isolate and tap out.-We are protected by the Shepherd's presence.-We don't talk enough about the reality that satan and his demons hate us and want to steal, kill, and destroy us.-Make no mistake, satan will absolutely destroy you. You are no match for him. However, he is no match for your Shepherd. He is terrified of your Shepherd.-If dependence is the goal, weakness is the advantage.-If closeness to the Shepherd is the goal, then the valley is the advantage.-Christians talk about our Dad and to our Dad. It's theology and a relationship.-We are comforted by the Shepherd's presence.-The rod is used for both protection and correction.-The Word of God is our rod today...it protects and corrects us as we read it and apply it to our lives.-The staff saves and directs.-The Holy Spirit saves us and gives us direction.-When you are looking for protection, proximity is everything.-What would you do if you knew God was with you? From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible goes out of its way to show you that God is with you.-It's time to stop playing religious games and leaving the Shepherd at church on Sunday. Take Him with you everywhere you go. If you had to compare yourself to an animal, what animal would you choose? What about a sheep? When you think about a sheep, what comes to mind? As we start our new series, The Shepherd in the Psalm, JP teaches us about sheep and how God, our Good Shepherd, leads them. KEY TAKEAWAYS-The sheep is the only animal in the animal kingdom without a defense mechanism.-The Scripture compared and calls us, humans, one animal: sheep.-The carrot that the enemy often dangles in front of us is freedom. We think we want it and can handle it, but in reality, it will kill us.-Do you believe that you need to be under the care of someone? Scripture is clear that is how God made us to live.-God, our good Shepherd, is in charge and we are not.-Psalm 23 is one of the most well know and most referenced passages in all of Scripture.-The Shepherd leads us to rest.-Christianity is not an “I have to” faith, but an “I get to” faith.-Sheep won't rest unless they are free from fear, conflict, parasites & flies (worries & anxiety & things to do), and hunger.-So many Christians have fears that are in exact opposition to God's Word and His promises to us.-Sheep are self destructive animals.-If dependence is the goal, then your weakness is the advantage.-The Shepherd leads us to restoration.-Sheep are completely fine drinking from water that will kill them. And the reality is, so are we.-You can not and will not grow as a follower of Jesus Christ without the spiritual disciplines.-God delights in taking broken things and making them new.-The person who is least OK is the one who is most committed to making everyone think they are OK.-The Shepherd leads us to Righteousness.-Christ, our Good Shepherd, has our best interests in mind. Always.-When we follow God's interests for our lives, His reputation is on the line, not ours. We can trust Him.-God doesn't only show us which way to go, He pays for the times when we go the wrong way.-The greatest apologetic today are believers who trust God in really difficult times.-Our desire for freedom and to be on our own transcends all ages and demographics. Left to ourselves, we will die. What does it mean when we say, “The Lord is my shepherd” (Ps. 23:1)? Phillip Keller offers an answer to this question in his book, A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23. “This thought alone should stir my spirit, quicken my own sense of awareness, and lend enormous dignity to myself as an individual. To think that God in Christ is deeply concerned about me as a particular person immediately gives great purpose and enormous meaning to my short sojourn upon this planet.” Today’s parable conveys this message as well. It’s the first in a series of three stories Jesus told about finding lost things (a sheep, a coin, a son). All three stories show how much God values us and how much effort He puts forth “to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). Even more significantly, the story highlights the loving nature of the Shepherd Himself, Jesus. Our Good Shepherd loves each of us so much that He is willing to leave his 99 sheep (“in the open country,” but protected) and search for the one who was lost (vv. 3–4). Notice it’s not the sheep seeking the shepherd but the other way around. God’s love pursues us, as we see throughout the Bible. And when we’re found, there is great “rejoicing in heaven” (vv. 5–7). Joy is always greater when the need and forgiveness are greater as well (see Luke 7:41–43). Two audiences were listening to this parable. One was “tax collectors and sinners,” lost sheep in need of a Savior (see Luke 5:31–32). The other was the Pharisees. They were also lost but refused to admit it. They pridefully complained about Jesus’ willingness to associate with the other group (vv. 1–2). In this story, Jesus sadly mocked them as “ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent” (v. 7). They did, of course, but their hearts were closed to Christ. >> You may have sheep and shepherds as a part of your nativity set. If you have time today, read the Good Shepherd discourse in John 10:1–18 and reflect on the fact that God is your shepherd, a powerful image used throughout Scripture.

Afghanistan is one of the harshest countries on earth for Christians. Yet in that nation, some Afghans have counted the cost and chosen to follow Jesus Christ. “Luke” is one of those believers. In fact, since coming to faith many years ago, he has become a respected leader among Afghanistan's house church movement. On this week's Christian Emergency Podcast, Andy Coleman speaks with Luke about his experience coming to faith in Afghanistan and the price he paid for not keeping his faith quiet. Luke lost employment, was arrested, imprisoned and threatened with death on several occasions. But today, Luke remains busy about the Kingdom and works to make the name of Christ famous in Afghanistan. Learn how Luke stood for Christ, and how he saw God use his obedience to grow the church in a difficult land. The demands placed on Luke were indeed extreme. Yet you may find they resemble pressures you encounter in your own life, wherever you live. Consider his example and how you can apply the lessons he learned in your own walk. In this episode Chris and Diane talk about the six characteristics we share with sheep from Psalm 23, and how they will help us navigate the dark valleys of fear in our lives.  Show Notes & Links: -Why fear is such a hot topic and common experience these days. -Why comparing us to sheep in Psalm 23 is right on: Diane's story about raising lambs.   The six characteristics of good sheep from Psalm 23: 1. A good sheep is a follower (v. 1). We have need of nothing. 2. Sheep need rest (vs. 2-3) "He makes us lie down..." 3. A good sheep stays close to the shepherd's staff for guidance. (v. 4) The rod and staff are meant for comfort and guidance, not punishment or condemnation.  4. God blesses the sheep in the dark valley. (v.5)He prepares a table of blessing for us in the presence of our enemies. 5. A good sheep lets the shepherd protect them (v. 5b) - He anoints our head with the "oil of protection." Lessons from a sheep herder.  6. God "double blesses" us. (v. 6) His blessings follow us everyday in this life and in eternity too! I’ve been preaching … about local overseers for local churches. It takes a special man for the task. Thank God for those special men.I’ve been reading … A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, by Phillip Keller. The more we learn about sheep, the more remarkable our Lord looks.I’ve been hearing … myself and people like me called “Pastor” all my life. And I really wish they would stop.I’ve been playing … Fields of Green. Sheep are a blessing to their owner. If they are not, the shepherd is likely to blame.

Because of My Podcast Randy Goers of the Drone Radio Show When you start a podcast you are seen as a digital influencer and today's example of something that wouldn't have happened if it wasn't because of their podcast is from Randy Goers who produces the Drone Radio Show. He explains how he is able to make great connections, and be able to attend Drone events with a press pass. He recently was able to interview one of the senior vice presidents of Intel who is in charge of directing their drone policy and program. That all happens Because of my Podcast. How to NOT Make Money with a Podcast Today I start a new segment that will appear from time to time with Jessica Kupferman who runs the www.JKMAgency.com and helps podcasters find sponsors. This segment is to help podcasters looking to monetize their podcast by helping them avoid the mistakes other are making. Keep in mind, you do not have to monetize your show. In this first initial segment, Jessica explains that when quoting numbers to a potential sponsor the number people are interested is your episode downloads after 30 days of being available. Monthly stats don't count because in that monthly downloads are episodes in your back catalog (and the sponsor is not going to be in those episodes). While most podcasters are not crazy about the CPM Model (where you are paid a certain amount of money for a thousand downloads, such as 30 CPM would mean when your episode goes over 1000 downloads you would be paid $30). If you're creating a media kit, you need to have a dollar value in mind so that when people ask for it, you're ready. Being secretive about your pricing is not going to help you. Yes, everything is up for negotiation but you have to have a starting price. Phillip Keller (Formerly Trapper Jack on Cleveland Radio) Spotlighting a Living Saint Phillip Keller spent 25 years in Cleveland Radio. He took not one, but TWO stations to number one. His show might be seen as controversial as he interviews people who have been healed by a local Dr. Issam Nemeh. This has lead to national attention. The miracle stories became so commonplace that programs as varying as Dr. Oz and 700 club feature Dr. Nemeh. Phillip does all of his own production and editing even though he is legally blind. In today's interview he talks about: The difference between radio and podcasting and the different broadcast muscles you need to flex What kind of prep he was doing when he was on a #1 Radio Station (and going to work at 3 AM) How he was treated when he got to #1 is amazing. Because of my Podcast: Clay From Fish Nerds Clay has had some very cool things happen on his Fish Nerds Show including having a touring opera singer invite clay to do a show at a theater. Check out Clay at www.fishnerds.com The Sometimes Condescending Nature of Radio People Towards Podcasting There are some really cool people from the radio industry that get podcasting. People like Eric K Johnson from Podcast Talent Coach and the Podcast Review Show, Michael Sharkey from the Talent Show, Jeff Brown From Read to Lead, Tim Sinclair from Ringr and My Worst Interview Ever, and Phillip Keller from Blind Faith live GET PODCASTING. I don't want to lump all radio people together. There are times when someone comes across with a condescending tone of voice. It comes across like "Podcasting is a fad, or not "Real Broadcasting." They seem to think that now that the "Real" broadcasters are here and it's time to step aside and let the "real" broadcasters take over. I recently listened to The Sound Off Show with Matt Cundill. In the episode, he was talking about how a recent professional survey company had polled listeners in Canda.Matt asks, "Is the hype on podcasting just a lot of noise and it takes a study like this one to figure out where it really ranks?" What a douchebag. AS if study after study showing podcasting's slow but steady growth, and radio's slow and steady decline aren't enough. This is what I say "Radio People" with a negative slant. This is what I'm basing my opinion on, and when I say "Some radio people have a bias," this is why. How Improv Skills Can Help Your Podcast Today I have Chad Elliot from the Off the Cuff Comedy Improv Podcast, and http://seattleimprovclasses.com/ I appeared on episode 7 and was SUPER nervous as I didn't get this I would be doing improv on his show. I have never done improv. Luckily Chad sent me his book Improv Manifesto: 7 Easy Steps to Confidence, Creativity, and Charisma - Even If You're Shy! (Think On Your Feet Under Pressure with Tools of Improvisational Theater & Improv Comedy.) which helped me get ready. Here are some things I learned. Talk with confidence, even when you're not confident about your answer. You will be amazed at how your brain "Fills in the blank" when you start talking. The key to improv is listening to every word of the person you are working with. If things horrible, it is a learning experience and you will handle it better next time, and will build skills to help get through it better. You can see results when you start doing one improve exercise What Does This Do With Podcasting? Joining the podcast today is international speaker and author, Heidi McLaughlin – a widow, mom, step-mom and grandmother. Heidi shares candidly about community and what it looks like to have hope and grit when you’re faced with life’s worst-case scenarios. Not only did Heidi survive the death of her first husband 22 years ago, but she is currently working through and grieving the death of her second husband, Jack, who dropped dead in her kitchen while standing right beside her only a few short months ago. What does community look like in the valleys of our darkest moments? What does it mean to approach hope with grit and determination? And, in a culture that prides itself on independence, how can we truly be the body of Christ? “We have to believe that it is important to stay connected. Until we actually begin to understand this in our minds and hearts, we won’t make time for relationships.” –Heidi McLaughlin Mentioned In Today’s Podcast The World Guild A Shepherd Looks At Psalm 23 by W. This week Pastor Mike is continuing on with a series on a book written by Phillip Keller, titled "Lessons From a Sheep Dog". We are in lesson 5 which is "The Test of Faithfulness". In this we learn that God may place us in areas of life with specific details that we would wonder if we're really effective and accomplishing much. In these times we have the distinct impression that God has set us aside and maybe forgotten about us. In times like this we become tempted to lay down our responsibilities and look for things to do of our own choosing. We want the spectacular in life, thinking that's where all the action is and if it's not spectacular it's not worth doing... This lesson reminds us that God isn't about that, he's about the heart that quietly goes about the task at hand. One that remains faithful in the midst of difficulty and isn't distracted by the things that come from the outside nor from the internal distractions that would ultimately take us away from the true heart of seeking after God. God is looking for those He can trust with being faithful in all walks if life... Are you being faithful and steadfast for Jesus? Listen in to hear more about this ever challenging topic...
