In a possibly unintended side effect to his monumental purchase of Twitter, Elon Musk saw shares in Tesla take a $125 billion nosedive yesterday as investors worried he might sell off Tesla shares to finance his Twitter buy. APD and the justice system are all over the news today: Travis County Judge Julie Kocurek has recused herself from four cases involving Austin police officers in use of force complaints related to the George Floyd protests, citing irregularities in the indictment process on the part of Travis County D.A. Jose Garza's office. Meanwhile, jury selection has begun in the first trial under Garza's administration involving an Austin police officer: former APD officer Nathaniel Stallings is accused of violating department use-of-force policies during the arrest of a woman four years ago. Also in local law enforcement justice, the girlfriend of Mike Ramos, whose police-involved 2020 killing served as a local flashpoint during the George Floyd period, has filed a $1 million lawsuit against the City of Austin. 89-year-old Willie Nelson is not slowing down in the studio department - he's set to release a yet another new album this week in "A Beautiful Time", and a listening party will be held on Friday afternoon at Waterloo Records, hosted by Texas Monthly writer and podcaster John Spong. Michael Buble has announced a return to Austin, after cancelling his last scheduled show here over COVID-19 policy conflicts with the University of Texas - he'll play the new Moody Center on September 14, tickets go on sale May 6. Austin ISD's Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy (or LASA) moves up significantly in this year's ranking of the best public schools in the country from U.S. News and World Report, rising from #41 to #34 overall and #4 in the state. Visual Capitalist.com has identified Texas as far and away the national leader in wind energy production, over doubling #2 Iowa - further, they find that Texas generates and also consumes more electricity than any other U.S. state. Eater.com has identified and mapped what it considers to be the 17 most iconic burgers in Austin, their homes range from Top Notch up north to Leroy and Lewis down south. Recent rains have brought some relief to one of the worst allergy seasons in memory, as warmer spring weather returns with a high of 80 today, and mid to upper 80's Thursday through the weekend - we also have a 25-35% chance of seeing more rain during that time period.

LIKEITORNOT is back with a brand new episode! Dropping on a day like today is heavy, to say the least, but the show must go on. With that being said, RIP to the legend and one and only, DMX. Also, Happy Birthday to one of my brothers from another, Matt 'Tuell Time' Tuell, NO YOU! We're Back! Lots of has been happening while we've been in break, so we start August by talking with veteran Austin community organizer, anti-police brutality advocate and Austin Legal Guild volunteer Debbie Russell (@Debmocracy) about the murder of Garrett Foster this past week, killed by a right-wing agitator who was driving his car into the crowd of peaceful protestors. The killer then drove off and later turned himself in to police but he was released and no charges have been filed. The Foster murder has received national attention and Debbie Russell and her comrades in Austin have played a major role in investigating the killing and preparing to present evidence. We also talked about some of the longer-term tensions between the Austin police and non-white communities, and the possibility of reform with new, progressive elected officials coming into office. Despite the national uprising against police violence, even in "liberal" places like Austin, the cops have continued to assault people of color and protests that have emerged since the killing of George Floyd. Used Car Dealer business owners everywhere are feeling the effects of a rough 1st half of 2020. The last thing anyone needs is more of the same tired DMV being adversarial to its own used car dealers. Truth be told there are some great inspectors that work for the California DMV like Inspector Partoza or Inspector Macias. Even some of the management seems fairly "on-the-ball" but for the most part, DMV inspectors use their power in a very sinister way. Their decisions and short-sidedness often results in the suspension of a car dealer auction license, whereby leaving the dealer unable to feed his/her family. Happens more to men, by the way...no wonder women live longer than men. We tried something a little different this week, heading over to the ShoWare Center in Kent to do a live show before the Tacoma Stars game. Unfortunately, we were a bit harder to find that normal, but there were still about 20 or so people who made it over. In any case, we were treated to a pretty spectacular match that featured lots of loud music, dancing mascots and scoring. The Stars won, too, on a Mike Ramos goal with less than 2 seconds remaining on the clock. The show consisted of Stars VP of Business Development John Crouch. He gave us some of the history behind the reborn Stars and some of their plans for the future.
