The event provided an opportunity to capture insights from three experienced outdoorsmen on the topic of fair chase. Specifically, we focused on forward facing sonar technology and how it is changing the fishing experience (and potentially catch rates). Publications like Outdoor News have been reporting on this topic for years. Some state agencies have started to address the topic directly, but many are holding tight and waiting to see where things go. Let us know if you have thoughts on how this technology can be best used, and what restrictions (if any) should be put on it.     Guests on today's podcast include: Mike Hehner from Linder Media Productions Greg Kvale - Board Member of Minnesota Backcountry Hunters & Anglers David Lien is a co-founder of the Minnesota Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Other Posts You May Like https://modcarn.com/conservation-mcp-ep028/ https://modcarn.com/hardwater-hunters-go-darkhouse-spearfishing/ https://modcarn.com/hunting-still-relevant-mcp040/

This episode's guest is someone that many have known for her longstanding leadership in international education, but some of us might not have known her as a businesswoman, a political leader, a caregiver, and as a newly minted author. Marlene M. Johnson was the Executive Director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators for almost two decades and prior to that was Minnesota's first woman Lieutenant Governor. She is co-founder of the Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and the Minnesota Women's Campaign Fund. She is now on the advisory board of Kakenya's Dream, a board member of the Washington Office on Latin America, and a trustee of the Alexandria Trust. In 1988, she was awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star by the Kingdom of Sweden. In this episode we go behind the scenes with Marlene about her life and her new book, Rise to the Challenge: A memoir of politics, leadership, and love. Episode highlights: Marlene's reflections about her life's journey and how the book came about. How Marlene's career in politics and business and her early international exposure prepared her to be a non-traditional candidate yet a good fit for the role of NAFSA's CEO and Executive Director. The “ability to punt” and how this attribute served Marlene well while leading NAFSA, whether it was weathering the Asian financial crisis that impacted Asian international students or the impact of 9/11 on the international education sector. Marlene's legacy of calling for a national policy on international education and her thoughts on where we stand now. Is the U.S. poised to have its first woman president and one whose life—coincidentally—reflects the legacy of international education? Marlene weighs in. The poignant love story of Marlene's life with her husband, Peter, and how their relationship influenced her and shaped her as a leader. Marlene's top 2-3 pieces of advice for women leaders. North Star Journey
From Verona to Nogales with a Latino adaptation of ‘Romeo and Juliet'

“Romeo and Juliet” has been reimagined countless times. The musical “West Side Story” relocated the tale to blue-collar Manhattan, while director Baz Luhrmann colorfully stylized and modernized the play in his 1996 film “Romeo + Juliet.” Twin Cities theater company Teatro del Pueblo's adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” goes beyond changing the location and period.  Called “Romeo and Juliet: Love in a Time of Hate,” the show has been rewritten to include characters speaking Spanish and performing spoken word poetry — and centers Latin American culture.  “We thought that, you know, the main thing is to take Shakespeare, tweak it, but maintain that beautiful language,” said co-director and co-adapter Alberto Justiniano. The new play adds elements to Shakespeare's tragedy, including examining the treatment of the working class and the range of ideologies within Latino communities.  “One of the things that I was hoping to bring is that connection between the Spanish and the Shakespeare,” said co-director Harry Waters Jr.  The play began with a treatment by Justiniano and was then workshopped over a number of years through a method called “devised theater,” where a core group of artists gave their input and changes. That spirit of collaboration has extended into the rehearsal room.  “I've always opened up that opportunity for actors to give us an unfettered, and, you know, uncensored reactions and their ideas. And then we sort of flesh them out and see which ones can actually work to help the story,” Waters added.  The play still features famous moments, including Romeo and Juliet's chance encounter at a party hosted by Juliet's parents and the couple's secret wedding. This production also includes new moments and characters, including a fast-talking narrator named Santi, inspired by southern California cholo culture.  “The language is a combination from the old Bard ... But there's also free verse, and then there's spoken word,” Justiniano said.  The idea of “Love in a Time of Hate” came about nearly six years ago, when Teatro Del Pueblo discovered there was interest in Shakespeare among Latino actors in the Twin Cities. At first, Justiniano was perplexed.  “But it got me thinking, what if we were to take Shakespeare and make it our own?”The show is a collaborative effort with the Minnesota Chapter of the Bach Society, which will provide music for the show. Marco Real-d'Arbellas is the associate artistic director of the Society and has overseen finding compositions for the play.“It's kind of going through the centuries and just picking up and finding these connections with London, Italy and Latin America,” said Real-d'Arbellas. Taking music that spans centuries and styles, including opera and Latin American folk music, Real-d'Arbellas is mixing both old and new music to engage audiences. “It's just a real nice mashup of music and languages, which I think would really help the action of the play.” The show's setting is the future, with dystopian themes, in the city of Nogales on the border of the United States and Mexico. It is ambiguous as to which country it takes place in, however. The cast features a supermajority of Latinos. “There's a couple of people that this is their first time being on stage,” Waters said of the cast.“What I was truly struck with at the first read-through, is that there was a roomful of brown people in the Twin Cities, who had never all worked together before.”Abigail Chagolla plays Juliet's nurse in “Romeo and Juliet: Love in a Time of Hate.” The show is an opportunity for her to play a character who, like herself, is Latina.  “I've only had, like, three other opportunities where I actually got to play a Latina woman,” Chagolla said. She adds that being in a show that is so heavily Latino has been beautiful — both because of the shared experiences of the cast, but also the differences.“Latinidad, it's a spectrum, right? Like, not everybody comes from the same sort of background. And so it's not a monolith. And being able to get different types of experiences in the room and then have those experiences used in the show is very beautiful.”

John is joined by PeggySue Imihy Bean (President of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Planning Association) and Alex Schieferdecker (also a planner). We're talking about the effort at the state legislature to protect municipal comprehensive plans from bad-faith environmental lawsuits (contact your state legislators!). The group of wealthy pretend environmentalists currently holding up the Minneapolis 2040 plan in court - over too much housing density - could be a sign of things to come for every city in the region. Not only is this potentially costly for cities who can't afford it, it has the potential to distort the process and discourage thoughtful and thorough long-range planning. The world's climate scientists agree that dense pedestrianized cities are good for the environment, allowing people to use less energy and driving less. PeggySue explains how comprehensive plans are already a form of environmental review. And as she wrote in a recent Star Tribune opinion, the tools available for environmental review in Minnesota are intended for specific projects or sites, not for speculative visions of the future, like citywide comprehensive plans. Alex notes that what's missing from the discussion and the court record is that the 2040 Plan isn't solely about housing density - it's about planning for stormwater runoff and a less car-centric transportation system. While a dozen of the state's realest environmental organizations (like Sierra Club) have signed on to fix state law, the plaintiffs in the anti-2040 case were created for the sole purpose of this lawsuit (and are represented by a lawyer who typically represents big polluters). We talk about how the Moorhead, MN and Washington state examples (of places that use environmental review for their comprehensive plans) are bad ones. And much, much more. However, after experiencing significant burnout several years ago, she radically changed her relationship to work and with this came the courage to start sharing her stories. Before he sold it, Brent was the President and Co-founder of Wagento, a full-service Magento ecommerce development agency specializing in SEO, web design, and the Magento platform. In addition, he is an active member and the SAP Chairperson of the Minnesota Chapter of the Entrepreneurs' Organization. In this episode… Employee happiness is a nebulous concept; however, it's evident that happier employees lead to stronger businesses, but many companies still fail to invest in their teams. When top talent leaves, it trickles down into all aspects of the organization. So what can you do to attract and retain valuable employees in this competitive environment? From his experience mentoring Wagento's project team on a customer and employee-centric approach to communications and project management, Brent Peterson has gained many insights into employee happiness. It takes more than offering a big paycheck for companies to attract and retain talent in today's job market. Employees have the power of negotiation since the jobless rate is so low, which means businesses big and small have to compete with each other, keeping employee happiness at the forefront. On this episode of the Ecommerce Wizards Podcast, Guillaume Le Tual speaks with Brent Peterson, the host of Talk Commerce, to discuss employee happiness and its direct influence on business success. They touch on the hiring process, keeping star talent, the challenge of having a remote team, and system modifications that benefit everyone. Brent also goes through the expectations of employees and businesses and how they relate to each other.

My father was captured by the Russians and sent to a Gulag north of the Arctic Circle. They survived the war and ultimately immigrated to the United States. These lessons have guided me to success professionally and personally. In addition to the passion I have for my work, I am an avid cyclist. At age 50 I took up playing the blues harmonica and on my 60th birthday I took up surfing in Costa Rica. This past year I took salsa lessons in Havana. However, the awareness regarding this major public health concern has been declining over the past decade. Valve disease awareness is one of the lowest, at less than 3%.Women have higher mortality than men when they undergo surgical aortic or mitral interventions, mainly because of a higher risk profile. For example, women with severe aortic stenosis usually present at older ages and have many associated comorbidities, however the outcomes are good when they are treated with transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Despite this, women are less likely to be referred for aortic valve replacement (AVR) than men.

“Marketing is just hocus pocus and pixie dust” — does that feel familiar? Most of us are tired of wasting time and money on the latest marketing strategies that never seem to work. Jennifer Zick of Authentic Brand shares why one of her clients said this (and why it’s one of her favorite quotes of all-time) on today’s show. Not only did her company coin the phrase “Random Acts of Marketing,” Authentic Brand provides fractional chief marketing officer (CMO) services that get businesses back on track and making better marketing decisions for the long-term. Jennifer’s mission is to help bring big company marketing resources and planning to the middle market, so tune in to learn a few things about strategy and team alignment to achieve your sales and clientele goals particularly in the B2B space. We go over how to eliminate the random acts of marketing, including all the associated costs, headaches, and — most frustrating of all — lack of progress that comes with them. Authentic Brand’s unique approach combines marketers, methodology, and mindshare to deliver real revenue results for any business owner. Major is LHB's landscape architecture and planning studio leader, where she oversees a team of mainly women in the firm's Minneapolis and Duluth offices. Her leadership and mentorship of this team — which is unique in the industry — helped Major attain the award, she says. Major began at LHB in 2007, after a former co-worker asked her to join the Minneapolis-based firm. She started her career at Westwood Professional Services after graduating with a master of landscape architecture from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor of arts in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “I sometimes feel like I use my English major more just in daily communication and how we kind of describe [design] to people,” she says. Her work has spanned public, residential and commercial spaces, including the Promenade of Wayzata, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District Comprehensive Master Plan Document and the Central Riverfront Regional Park Master Plan. In this episode, Major speaks with Reporter Kelly Busche about her career, and how over the past year, she has seen the public's expectations for public spaces like sidewalks, streets and parks, change due to the pandemic and social justice transformation.

ATTENTION CONTROL FREAKS, PERFECTIONISTS, DORM MOTHERS, HALL MONITORS, PETTY TYRANTS, BRIDEZILLAS, AND OCD MOTHER-IN-LAWS...This episode is for you.  Gaye Lindfors was raised in a tiny town in central Minnesota. Taught from an early age to fear the Lord, she chose a career in Corporate America in order to "reconcile her faith with the real world." She desired a more practical way of living her faith than that of the monastic monk praying and handing out tracks to strangers.  As the head of human resources for a major airline based in Minneapolis, Gaye was responsible for resolving at times extremely complex issues involving employees of the airline. So when her mother's Alzheimer's degraded to the point that she needed full-time live-in assistance, she thought, "No problem! I've got this." Famous last words. Gaye soon realized that dealing with an ill mother was not quite the same as dealing with complex issues involving employees with whom she had little or no emotional connection. She realized her controlling habits and mindset were a major obstacle to her ability to care for her mother, and was in turn creating health issues of her own. Gaye realized that in order to properly care for her mother, and for her own sanity, she needed to break through her need to always feel like she's in control.  Now that the storm has passed, and she has properly grieved her mother's passing, Gaye can laugh at her own ControlFreakitis and give encouragement to others who have similar struggles. About the guest: Whether she's speaking at women's conferences or retreats, blogging, or writing books, Gaye's not afraid to poke fun at her own mishaps. She brings a blend of Bible teaching, life stories, and humor.  Gaye started her own company after a successful leadership career in corporate America. She served as the Midwest Regional Director for Christian Women in Media and is past-president of the National Speakers Association for the Minnesota Chapter.  Her most recent book, “Getting My Ducks in a Row and other Stories of Faith,” reminds us that when we don't have our act together (which, for a lot of us, is much of the time), when we can't even find our ducks and getting them in a row seems like mission impossible, God is faithful. We can stop fixing, fretting, and striving.  Gaye will encourage your soul, refresh your faith, and give you something to giggle about. In our discussion with Gaye, you'll discover: -Gaye's "Faith Breakthrough"...04:05 -Needing encouragement dealing with Mom's Alzheimers...08:20 -A saint in blue jeans...10:50 -Gaye's support system dealing with the chaos...13:35 -Responding to the feeling of lost control...15:10 -Giving up the need to control and fix...17:20 -Not born with a "badge of courage"...24:20 -The inspiration behind Gaye's book...26:45 -What do people think when they see a glimpse of your life?...29:30 -The true meaning of piety...32:15 -Overcoming chronic controlfreakitis...36:00 Download Gaye's FREE ebook: "Finding a Breath of Fresh Air, And a Way to Start Again" at her website gayelindfors.com
