On this episode myself and Taryn interviewed longtime college friend of mine. Deanne Brodie-Mends @theladydeanne on all socials. Links below. Deanne's family is from Ghana and moved to the states before she was born. She grew up in Moore Oklahoma in an education focused house. Her mom would always have her and her siblings reading, speaking on stage and learning new words. As many immigrants will know, immigrant parents push education as the way to succeed from a young age. Many friends of mine have had the same experience, as Deanne said "there's a small window of what you can be as an immigrant child. Doctor, Lawyer etc." Deanne's mom put her on stage from a young age which now is the reason she is so comfortable performing, speaking and sharing her work. Deanne is currently working full time and has a masters degree in education but her passion and the reason for our podcast was to share her stories, poems and the fire that she has inside of her to spread the word throughout the community. Deanne is incredible on stage, spoken word, poems really anything. Her delivery, the weight of the words that come from her writing. Its just a joy to see a friend do so much with the gift she's been developing for years. Deanne has only been doing this on stage for 3/4 years but a lifetime of moms backing to go on stage, write assignments and participate in all kinds of social settings has developed this skill. Her latests poem and piece is called "The Single" its about single women and how they feel. You can watch it here its POWERFUL! This is just the start of Deanne's projects for 2020, there's a book coming and many more performances. Wx Resources: We provide some great weather sites, apps and equipment Weather Fools: We share the foolish things people do in bad weather situations Listener/Viewer Comments and Questions Who will be our next guest? Our Guests Bill Ford and Mike Prendergast of Storm Warriors Bill Ford has been tracking down tornadoes and helping with disaster relief for three decades. After witnessing the aftermath of the 1999 Moore Oklahoma tornado, Bill has been stopping and giving assistance to those affected by storms. He was involved in the recovery from Rita, Katrina, and Sandy hurricanes as well as many tornado aftermaths in Texas and Oklahoma. Bill believes, “No one should ever die from a tornado.” He helps bring advanced warning to communities by providing ‘ground truth’ to the National Weather Service and other news media. Bill has also been a part of helping train volunteer fire fighters, county sheriff and community leaders on how to give advanced warning. In addition, helping family’s community organizations and schools take responsibility through awareness and education through their “Know Where To Go” campaign. Born and bred in Texas, Mike Prendergast first gained a fascination with all things extreme weather when he experienced the power of a Category 3 Hurricane Alicia in 1983 as the eye wall passed over his childhood home. He has been enamored with weather ever since and in particular tornadoes. His heart for serving others spills over into storm chasing. While he enjoys seeing the power of the storm, he hates to see communities get ravaged. After years of asking God why he has this fascination with something that causes so much pain and destruction, He has shown Mike the good in being able to warn others of the impending storm, assist those that need it most and help restore those communities affected. ShEvo vs. The First World | A Skeptical Look at Western Culture
Full Show Script [fundamentally wrong] EVO: If you had to pick a time to travel northern Europe, you probably wouldn't pick winter. But we're owning the name The Opportunistic Travelers, and this is where the opportunity took us. SHE: And it's not like we were at the North Pole or anything. Compared to The northeastern part of The States, it's not that bad here in Europe. It's been manageable. The calendar tells me it's spring now, but I'm not sure I believe it, based on what I'm feeling when I'm outside. However, the buds on the trees tell me that spring is just around the corner. EVO: We've been in England for over a month now. So we can say with at least some authority that England's bad rap for its food and its weather is mostly deserved. Or as Cousin Avi said it: [england] EVO: Well, not just London. North West England and Yorkshire too. SHE: We've had mixed results with the food in England. Some of it has been amazing. And some of it not so much. One of my favorite foods of all time is fish & chips ... and even those have been on the great side and some on the not so much side. E's experience has been roughly the same. EVO: But there's one food they get right every time. Cheese. Here's just one of our experiences with glorious, glorious cheese, this time enjoyed with the marvelous beers from Marble Brewing in Manchester. [cheese] SHE: Yep, I'll take some more cheese, please! And like cousin Avi referenced, it rains a lot in England. Like, a lot. The English typically carry an umbrella with them at all times ... ''cuz you never know. Me? I never have an umbrella. As a photographer, the rain can seriously hurt my camera gear, Lucky for me, Evo was Johnny on the spot with an umbrella... and extras. [poop bag] SHE: The authentic English voice you heard was Matthew Turner (http://turndog.co/) , another person Evo met online. He not only offered us a bed for a few nights, he also acted as tour guide for our trip to York. Sorta. I'm not judging, because I don't know everything about history of my home town, Moore Oklahoma. But ... we also don't have an ancient castle in Moore. [castle] EVO: It rained on us off and on while we were in York. All that rain, at least along the River Ouse (and yes, it's pronounced "ooze"), leads to a lot of flooding. A lot as in frequency -- the river floods every couple of years. And a lot as in volume -- flood waters of 20 feet or more aren't uncommon. Geography and hydrology make it difficult to control the flooding, and business haven't -- or won't -- move back from river front. So those business flood. A lot. SHE: Just like eager moms and dads marking their child's growth inside door frames or on various cute yardsticks hung on the wall, a bar called The Kings Arms marks the high water marks from floods in a similar fashion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-KE0OaJ2Ao) . These markings on their walls are featured and displayed like a badge of honor, saying "You can't stop be beer, Mother Nature. You can only delay it a little while." [flood Levels] SHE: We're not staying along the River Ouse, so we're likely safe from the floods. Maybe. If it ever stops raining. EVO: Cheers from Yorkshire! SHE: We travel the world as The Opportunistic Travelers largely because of our generous listeners. EVO: People all over the world pledge as little as five bucks a month, and in return, they get a hand-written postcard from us sent from wherever opportunity has taken us, every single month. Sign up today at TheOpportunisticTravelers.com/postcards. SHE: We also stay for free most of our journey. No, we’re not super-stars or anything. We eliminate hotel costs and stay in some great cities by housesitting all over the world. Get our complete list of the actual housesitting sites we use every day at TheOpportunisticTravelers.com/stayforfree, and stop spending money on hotels when you travel, too. Thanks for...

Hello dear listeners, and welcome to week four of "Co-Host-A-Palooza" here at Just One of the Guys, where today we're going to be covering our requisite two books, starting with Green Lantern #66, a tale that brings a classic GL villain into the then current 1990's. Sadly, that villain is Sonar, and his revision is oh so 90's, replete with Spandex body suit, rockin' sleeveless labcoat, and bitchin' hair metal hair. Not much of a step up from his original outfit. But to help take down the sonic menace, Kyle is getting a little help from his soon to be JLA teammate, The Flash! With Guy Gardner we get a tale of Guy wandering the galaxy, blasting teenage alien car-jackers, and rescuing some ex-GL's, all the while sporting some truly awful hair metal hair. It seems to be a theme this episode. Yeah, this isn't one of the best of the Guy Gardner run, but thankfully, it's nowhere close to Issue 37 of Green Lantern . But being that the Flash shows up in the comic, I've wrangled awesome podcaster Dave Walker, host of Flash Legacies to bring his unique talent to the show and to let us know why Wally's costume was so shiny. So, unless you want more discussion about how Paul Pelletier draws certain areas of male anatomy, I suggest you grab your mp3 player of choice, download the show, and get to listening! Also, be certain to check out Charlie Niemeyer's eBay auction to get some great Mark Waid Captain America comics, which proceeds go directly to the Red Cross to assist with relief efforts for the tornado that recently hit Moore Oklahoma.Feedback for this show can be sent to: justoneoftheguyspodcast@gmail.comJust One Of The Guys is a proud member of the Two True Freaks!
