Moriah Smallbone has been making music for a long time, but you've never heard her make music the way she does on her new EP Live From the Quarry. The collection of atmospheric worship songs presents the first music Moriah has created almost entirely on her own— a fitting approach for lyrics that are also the most raw and personal she has ever released. Moriah's career has spanned an early audition for American Idol, time as a solo artist, and collaboration with her husband Joel Smallbone (for KING & COUNTRY). But with Live From the Quarry, Moriah channels her own pain into a new kind of ownership of the voice God has given her.She shares about this vulnerable process of becoming more fully herself in this episode of Trevor Talks, a conversation dripping with wisdom and authenticity.Get Live From the Quarry at https://lnk.to/LIVEQuarryEP. Rhett Walker is not your typical Christian artist. The 25-year-old preacher's son who was raised in the South has come full circle with his faith after a period of rebelling against it.“We moved away from my hometown when I was 16, and I didn't like that. I just went nuts, doing whatever I wanted to do in the moment,” he said. “I mixed with the rough crowd, got into fights and drugs. It wasn't long before I was expelled from school—just always in trouble. So they sent me to this Christian school, the only one that would take me, and I met this girl. It wasn't long after that we found out she was pregnant. That was the stop in the path for me.”Being faced with being a father at 17, Rhett knew it was time to make a choice - he could continue going down the destructive path he was on, or he could change. “It was like, Man, what am I doing?” he recalls. “My girlfriend's having a baby, and I have no job. I finally sat down with April, who is now my wife, and said: We've done everything wrong that we possibly can. Let's do everything right from here on out.”Rhett and April went on to get married, and rededicated his life to Christ. From there, the Lord began opening doors for Rhett to lead worship and pursue music. “I always knew I wanted to do music, but I couldn't sing as a kid; I was just terrible at it,” he said. “So I was a drummer at church growing up until one day they called me out front to sing ‘Grace Like Rain' by Todd Agnew, and I never went back to the drums. The more I sang the more things started opening up.”Rhett's first single with his new record label Essential Records was "When Mercy Found Me" off the album Come To The River. The record speaks of the singer's personal journey and is refreshingly raw and honest. One theme that is apparent throughout the entire album is that of grace.“There's just nothing we can do without grace; we're all dirty, messed up people, but Christ still loves us,” said Rhett. “So there are two things we must do. One: rejoice, because now we have a purpose on this earth—to share that grace with others. Two: take up the calling. You can't just take that love and not tell the story that goes with it.”The song "Come To The River," was the result of a season where Rhett was having a difficult time dealing with the burdens of life. “I was kind of in a moment in my life where I felt like I was I just but being overwhelmed by the stresses of life. I started getting so overwhelmed that I got in my car one day and got alone with Christ, and I ended up in front of a river and said, ‘God I can't do this alone, I'm just a man.'” he explains. “I felt like God was telling me, ‘Just come to the river. You've got to wash yourself clean of this. And you've got to let me be in control.' There are moments in everyone's life when they come to that point. Mine just happened to be in front of a river.”Rhett used his God given talents once again while serving with K-LOVE's Scott and Kelli at Denver's Sharefest this last summer. While in Denver, 12 people were killed and 58 injured during a shooting spree at a local movie theater on July 19, 2012. The following day, he worked with Moriah Peters to write and perform "Just Pray" in memory of the victims and gave it away for free. His newest single "Believer" was created "to combat the daily struggles and thoughts of 'I'm just not good enough,' because we serve a God as a believer that says, 'Yes, you can't be good enough, but I sent my son to die on the cross and pay the ultimate sacrifice so that way your foundation can be freedom.'" Rhett continues, "So, to end anxiety - we can be truth speakers. To stress and frustration - we can be mountain movers. We are Gospel preachers with hearts on fire, and I want to walk in that freedom."

I sat down with my friend Elizabeth Chan who is a professional touring/session drummer and road manager. She has played for some of the biggest names in country and Christian music including: Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Lauren Daigle and Moriah Peters. On this weeks episode we spend time talking about how Elizabeth found her way to Nashville and the immediate doors that opened which allowed her to quickly work her way into position as an in-demand drummer and tour manager on the road.Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com.Talking Points:*I sent a bunch of emails to different management companies I had contacts with from years ago. One manager actually needed a drummer for an artist. He said most emails get deleted automatically, but he felt like he should open the email.*It was God’s grace that pulled all of that together.*First artist to play for was CCM artist Moriah Peters at Disney World.*The show at Disney had industry people there that I connected with.*Blaine Barcus was Moriah’s A&R person and we connected and built a relationship and I got to know him and his wife. I wanted to learn more about his story, not for business.*Be willing to be curious about people’s lives and know them for who they are, not what they do.*That can lead to other opportunities because you add value to the person.*Building relationships is key.*There are amazing musicians everywhere, but the one thing that makes us all different is the character you bring to the gig.*You spend most of your time with people on the road more than on the stage.*Keep yourself healthy.*If you’re not easy to work with or be around, no one wants to be with you.*Likability is more important than talent.*Create an outlet for working with something you believe in.*Don’t sign up for something you don’t believe in.*Don’t create a life where you only go 50%.*How did you get gigs after playing for Mariah Peters? A person connected to an artist I was playing for would see me play and reach out and it would lead from one thing to another.*A lot of times you get called for one show but then it leads to more work with that artist.*How did you land a gig with Carrie Underwood on the CMA awards? I was filling in playing at a church along with a keys player who ended up playing for Carrie Underwood. 3 or 4 years later Carrie’s music director called me with a reference from Carrie’s keyboard player to play the CMA awards.*Don’t fake it. Just show up as your authentic self.*When I have time off, I fill up my time just listening to the music genre I am working in to be more familiar with it.*Be very intentional at breaking a part grooves to learn how different genres work. Elizabeth Chan is a touring and session drummer from New York City, currently based in Nashville, TN. She has worked with a variety of artists, including seven-time GRAMMY Award winner Carrie Underwood, country music legend Darius Rucker (of Hootie and The Blowfish), multi-platinum artist Keith Urban, powerhouse country trio Lady Antebellum, The Voice Australia finalist Ben Hazlewood, Billboard AC/CHR chart topper Hollyn, and 2014 GMA Dove Award “New Artist of the Year” Ellie Holcomb. Whether playing to anthemic rock and country melodies or accompanying folk and pop ballads, one this is consistently evident: There is never a lack of passion in what Elizabeth does.Music has long been a part of Elizabeth Chan’s life. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Elizabeth became highly involved in the rich local music scene of New York City. Under the direction of drum teachers Paul Two and Phil Bloom, Elizabeth began diving into genres from rock to R&B, jazz to hip hop, and gospel to latin.By the age of 17, Elizabeth was offered a full-tuition music scholarship to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and travel as a drummer with their touring music teams. By the end of her college career, Elizabeth had graduated summa cum laude, played more than 270 shows across the United States, participated in 7 tours, garnered multiple endorsements and worked with a number of notable artists and songwriters.Elizabeth now resides in Nashville, TN. where she serves as a touring/session musician and tour manager for numerous pop, country and CCM acts.Artists Elizabeth has worked with: Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Eric Church, Hollyn, Lauren Daigle, Mandisa, Rachel Wammack, Sara Groves, Ellie Holcomb, Christy Nockels, Love & The Outcome, Ben Hazlewood, Sandra McCracken, JJ Heller, Jonathan Thulin, Moriah Peters, Lindsay McCaul, Charles Billingsley (of NewSong), Elias Dummer (of The City Harmonic), Jason Germain (of Downhere), Hannah Kerr.
I used to think about courage in terms of doing 'big' physical things, like going on the giant swing at a Sport and Recreation camp, climbing out on the yard arm of a tall ship, and jumping off the 10m diving platform (I've never done that!). But then I heard a sermon about having courage for the 'little', but often life-changing moments, like starting a conversation with someone you don't know, opening a letter that you know you may not like the contents of, and learning how to confidently say how you really feel. Hearing that sermon, and it was quite a few years ago now, changed the way I approached the 'little' yet 'big' moments in my life. I started to see these moments as opportunities to build courage - essentially building a greater trust in Jesus. However, these moments/opportunities required more than trust, they required me to actually do something. I could say to myself, I trust You God, and then leave the letter unopened on the table for days. Am I really trusting God? No. It was not until I actually opened that letter that the trust went into action and I became courageous. And wow did that feel good! In my listening appointment with God this week, one of the things I felt God say to me was, 'have courage to let me do the work I want to do in you.' My immediate response was, 'Need more courage - I need to get more equipped!' . I know that over the years God has increased my courage, but this sounded like I was soon going to have some God-given opportunities to grow that courage to the next level and I didn't want to have fear sabotage the work God wanted to do in me. Earlier in the week I had set up a playlist called 'Courage' and it included songs like, 'You're gonna be OK' by Jenn Johnson; 'Take Courage' by Bethel Music; 'Your grace finds me' by Matt Redman; 'Lions' by Skillet; 'This I believe' by Hillsong Worship; 'Whom shall I fear' by Passion; 'No Longer Slaves' by Bethel; 'Break every chain' by Jesus Culture and 'Another in the Fire' by Hillsong United; 'Oh Fear (My God is Near)' by Moriah Peters. So I added some more songs to the list and started playing them and declaring their truth Then I made a list of some scriptures relating to courage .... Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV The Lord is my revelation-light to guide me along the way; he’s the source of my salvation to defend me every day. I fear no one! I’ll never turn back and run from you, Lord; surround and protect me. Psalm 27:1 TPT Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9 NKJV Also David told Solomon his son, Be strong and courageous, and do it. Fear not, be not dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail or forsake you until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord. 1 Chronicles 28:20 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” Romans 8:15 NLT Remember to say alert and hold firmly to all that you believe. Be mighty and full of courage. Let love and kindness be the motivation behind all that you do. 1 Corinthians 16:13 TPT We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies. 2 Corinthians 4:8-11 NLT For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV So now I daily worship and mediate on these truths, declaring that God has indeed not given me a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind, and when the prompting from the Holy Spirit comes, step out trusting that He has gone before me. No fear, in Jesus Name. Perhaps there is something in your life that requires you to step out and be courageous, and yet you hesitate. I pray that as you read this post and take time to read again the truth from our God, that trust and courage will rise up and you will be able to just do it - in Jesus Name. Trust that God has gone before you. For God will never give you the spirit of fear, but the Holy Spirit who gives you mighty power, love, and self-control. 1 Timothy 1:7 TPT To find out more please visit https://wendyrobinson.com.au

Tony shares candidly about the long journey through trials and setbacks that required a lot of tenacity and faith for him to “make it” years after he settled here with his first song being recorded, as well as his uncertainty that the “next song will ever come.” You can read more about Tony Wood on his website at tonywoodonline.com and follow him on Twitter and Instagram @tonywood_exit71. “Our job is to build bridges with the people we meet. And, if Jesus so happens to walk across, great. Our job is to love people.” My guest for today’s episode is Moriah Peters. An amazingly talented singer/ songwriter, Moriah is first a brave and loving young woman who is following God with all her heart. Moriah grew up outside of Los Angeles in Chino, California – a place known mostly because it’s home to a prison as well as lots of cows. In today’s episode, Moriahshares how she discovered her love of music and that high school was one of the best times in her entire life. After a surprising American Idol audition, she ended up moving to Nashville at 17 to pursue a career in music. She fell in love with and married Joel Smallbone of the band For KING & Country in 2013 (If you haven’t heard Joel’s interview on our podcast, he’s Episode 26!). One year later she released her sophomore album, “Brave”. A few of Rooney’s favorites from this album include “You Carry Me” and “Know Us By Our Love”. Check out today’s episode, “Bravery and Bridges”, and hear the story of an amazing young woman who’s working to help the next generation rise up and let go of fear: a generation “whose time has come to break free of what prevents them from changing this world, a generation that has been called to be BRAVE!”

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
This week's song, "You Carry Me" by Moriah Peters led me to two different metaphors describing how God carries us in Scripture. Pondering on HOW God carries us and truly taking the time to identify the seasons of our own lives WHEN God has carried us are what we'll be talking about on the podcast this week. When you invest in reflecting on the seasons of your life this week, you will be encouraged to see God's hand in your history. On this week's episode I discuss: God carries us like a shepherd carrying lambs - Isaiah 40:11 God carries us like an eagle - Deuteronomy 32:10-12 How an eagle stirs her nest What we have to do to soar like eagles ourselves - Isaiah 40:27-31 Looking back on every season Creating a timeline reflecting God's faithfulness Believing that God will work ALL things together for good - Romans 8:28 This Week's Challenge Do your own research to see other references of God carrying us. Or if the picture of the Shepherd really impacted you today, spend some time in Isaiah 40 and Psalm 23 and seek out other Shepherd references to begin to get perspective and understanding. If the picture of the Eagle really impacted you, spend some time in Deuteronomy 32 and ponder what these truths might mean in your current situation. At some point this week, you need to take te time and write out a timeline of the seasons in your life and determine how God's hand was there carrying you. Write it down and then share it with someone!
Moriah Peters is a U.S. singer songwriter. She started writing songs at the age of 13 and "had dedicated herself to the leadership of God at the age of 14 and can still remember her heart's genuine prayer of, 'God, I just want to be used by you.'" She auditioned for American Idol, but they were harsh to her because of her wholesome image, telling her to experience life ("kiss a boy") before entering the music industry. In this interview she shares about her debut album, and overcoming stagefright.
