In this episode of Sermon Notes, host Jay Strother sits down with guests Travis Cottrell and Ashton Burgos to discuss the culmination of their church's 40 days of prayer emphasis. They explore the impact of prayer in their community, plans for an upcoming night of worship and prayer, and share insights on leading their congregation in meaningful worship experiences. Ashton reflects on her transition from Brooklyn, New York, to Brentwood Baptist, while Travis recounts his journey as worship pastor. Throughout the conversation, they emphasize the power of corporate prayer, the intentional planning that goes into worship services, and the importance of creating spaces for the congregation to engage deeply with God. With anticipation for their upcoming series in Colossians, the episode encourages listeners to participate actively in their faith journey.

When Travis Cottrell stepped into Nashville, he probably didn't expect his journey to lead where it has. As a Christian Artist, Songwriter, and Arranger, Travis later added "Worship Pastor" to his resume at age 40. Travis's narrative is a soul-stirring blend of faith, music, and the magnetic pull of community that brought him to his current role at Brentwood Baptist Church. His reflections reveal more than just a career path—they offer a window into the life of a worship pastor that stretches far beyond the reach of the microphone. One of my favorite people to have on my radio show "Worship with Andy Chrisman" is my friend Travis Cottrell. Travis is an accomplished artist, songwriter, arranger, worship leader and producer and he's become one of my best friends in the industry! I asked him to make an appearance on the podcast because whenever we get together we spend an inordinate amount of time talking about 80s pop music, debating TRUTH trivia and getting sidetracked on the most random of subjects. So that all happens on this longer than normal episode, and eventually Travis takes over hosting duties to ask me questions about my career. Support the showandychrisman.com

One of our very favorite friends, Travis Cottrell, joins us on this week's episode (ALERT ALERT HE HAS A NEW ALBUM COMING OUT ON FRIDAY 7/21), and Melanie and I had the best time catching up with him. Travis tells us about what it's like to sing background vocals on the Grand Ole Opry (AS YOU DO), and he and Mel have a big discussion about some newer country artists they love to listen to. Also, I feel like I need to confess that I spent the last 30-ish minutes of this episode with my head on my desk because I was on the front end of a stomach virus and didn't know it at the time. Plus the site we use to record kept kicking me out of the recording and the last time I rejoined my microphone wasn't connected but who even cares because I was about to get in the bed anyway. Melanie and I are so happy that our friend Travis Cottrell (aka FryDaddy) is joining us on this week's episode. Travis is a gifted worship leader, singer, musician, and songwriter who just so happens to love the Christmas season a lot. Like, A LOT A LOT. So when Mel and I talked about recording an episode that functions almost like a Christmas special (an extravaganza, if you will), asking Travis to join us was a no-brainer. His Neil Diamond impression alone is worth the (super free) price of admission. So. We're going to talk about the latest with Travis' family, we're going to talk about Christmas memories, we're going to talk about Christmas food, and we're going to talk about Christmas music. Kenna Turner West, recording artist, multi-Dove Award-winning songwriter, and five-time Songwriter of the Year, will be the featured artists this week on The Gospel Jubilee.Listen to the Gospel Jubilee on your Echo device by saying, Alexa, play the Gospel Jubilee on Apple podcast.Or go to: https://api.spreaker.com/v2/episodes/47103586/download.mp3ABOUT KENNA TURNER WESTKenna Turner West has co-written hit songs such as “Say Amen,” “Revival,” “Small Town Someone,” and “Even Me.”Her many successes have come as no surprise to her friends in the music industry; some might even say that it “runs in the family.Kenna's father is bass singer Ken Turner, who sang for many years with the legendary Blackwood Brothers Quartet. Her mother-in-law is country music icon Dottie West, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2018.With roots that are firmly planted in gospel music, Kenna's career began in 1983 as a vocalist. In time, however, God began to open a new facet of ministry for the singer.“I had been writing songs for years,” she recalls, “but it was more like journaling with rhyme. Yet there was a season of time around 1997 or 1998, when we were losing my grandmother to dementia and my mom was diagnosed with a tumor near her brain, that I began to see life intersecting with Scripture. The verses that God was using to bring me peace and comfort suddenly began to take on a melody, and I'd write it down. Then one night at church, a friend encouraged me to record some of the songs, so I did; then another friend who worked for a record company gave the songs to the publisher at thelabel, and within a week, the trajectory of my life had completely changed.”Kenna got her first cut shortly thereafter (“A Taste of Grace”), followed by her first radio single (“We're Not Gonna Bow”), which reached #1 on the national charts as well as earning the new songwriter her first of eleven Dove Award nominations.Twenty years later, Kenna has penned over a thousand songs and has garnered over 100 “Song of the Year” nominations, along with 25 “Song of the Year” winsand 8 BMI Awards. As a staff writer for Curb|Word Music Publishing in Nashville, her songs have appeared on GRAMMY® Award-winning projects by both JasonCrabb and Hillary Scott (of Lady A), as well as eight GRAMMY® nominated recordings. You can also find her work on projects by artists such as The Martins, The Isaacs, Michael English, The Crabb Family, Finding Favour, Charles Billingsley, Take 6, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Booth Brothers, Wes Hampton and AdamCrabb of the Gaither Vocal Band, Triumphant Quartet, Travis Cottrell, Jimmy Fortune (of The Statler Brothers), The Collingsworth Family, Brian Free & Assurance,Marty Raybon (of Shenandoah), Joseph Habedank, Karen Peck & New River, Jeff & Sheri Easter, The Nelons, Selah, The Blackwood Brothers, Mac Powell (of ThirdDay), and many more.Additionally, Kenna has created six musicals for the church, including Word Music's best-selling “We Are Witnesses,” along with the Dove Award-nominated projects, “Love Won” and “Christmas Is in The Heart.”In 2020, Kenna signed as an artist with Crossroads Music Group and released her long-awaited project, “A Reason for Hope,” in the summer of 2021.“I am so excited about this new chapter of life,” she shares. “It is as if everything that the Lord has allowed me to do for Him over the last 38 years has ledto this moment.”Kenna's career in gospel music has indeed come full circle. The author and board-certified Biblical counselor—who is currently pursuing a master's degreein theology—continues to blend music, devotional teaching, and humor into a ministry that reaches across the nation and around the world with the goodnews of the Gospel. Whether she is writing songs on Music Row or ministering alongside noted Christian leaders at venues ranging from The Pentagon to NASCARchapels to the local church, Kenna's life has a singular call: to creatively communicate the Living Hope found in Jesus Christ.“It's all I have wanted to do since I became a Believer,” she confesses, “and I feel so incredibly blessed that God is still allowing me to do just that.”For more information about Kenna's music and ministry, or to book her for an event, contact her office at kenna@kennaturnerwest.comYou can now catch The Gospel Jubilee Thursday afternoons at 4:00 PM and Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM EST on Southern Branch Bluegrass RadioGo to www.sbbradio.orgYou can also catch The Gospel Jubilee Saturday evenings at 7:00 and Wednesday afternoons at 4:00 CST on Radio For Life.Go to: www.RadioForLife.orgPlaylist: Artists | Song Title | Album01. Corey, a native of Charlotte NC, is the trumpet player and horn arranger for Sol Fusion Band, freelance-trumpet professional, and music educator. Over the past few years as a professional musician, Corey has shared the stage and recorded with a varietal mix of some of the world’s finest musicians including Maynard Ferguson, Ron Kenoly, Travis Cottrell, Donald Lawrence and Tri-City Singers, Maurette Brown-Clark, Bill and Gloria Gaither’s Homecoming Series “Camp Meeting”, Sistar, James R. As many of y'all know, Travis is one of our very favorite people - and he happens to be a huge fan of 80's music. You'll hear the 80's music part of our Patreon discussion on this episode, and you'll also see a link to Travis' 80's Duets Playlist in the Show Notes below. And on top of all that: Melanie shares Five Favorites. Hope y'all enjoy! Our Amazon Shop Be A Patron! We weren't planning to record an episode this week, but then we (the Hudsons) cancelled our Spring Break trip, and the country pretty much shut down, and suddenly that empty podcast calendar looked like a bit of an opportunity. SO. On this week's episode Melanie and I are so happy to get to talk to our great friend Travis Cottrell, also known as FryDaddy here on the podcast. Travis is a worship leader, a gifted singer and songwriter, and the brother Melanie and I didn't even know we were missing until around 2007. He also happens to be one of the funniest people we know. It won't be a surprise to listen and realize that our conversation is all over the place, but the up side of that is that we cover a lot of ground. We discuss what we're cooking during the quarantine, share our favorite snacks (salty and sweet), and ponder whether or not we should be trying on our jeans every couple of days to make sure they still fit. We also talk about how we became friends and whether the three of us have ever thought about doing a live show together (short answer: yes ma'am). :-) Hope y'all enjoy! Become a Patron! Krissy Nordhoff is a professional songwriter, co-founder of the Brave songwriting community, author, and creator of The Writing Worship Course. Realizing that her dreams were shifting away from travel and performing, Krissy began to focus on songwriting. Along the way, she garnered three Dove Award nominations for her efforts and won a Dove Award for Worship Song of the Year for the beloved anthem “Your Great Name,” inspired by her own health battle and God's healing. Her songs have been recorded by a variety of artists including Natalie Grant, Jenn Johnson (Bethel Music), Tauren Wells, Mandisa, Darlene Zschech, David and Nicole Binion, Travis Cottrell, Prestonwood Worship, Corey Voss, Dustin Smith, Phillips, Craig & Dean and many others. Well, if you have dreamed of an in-depth weigh-in on the current Royal Family shenanigans, this may be the episode you've been waiting for. Suffice it to say that Melanie has some thoughts, and oh, has she ever done her research. We also discuss our new favorite Netflix show, and I don't mean to brag, but I'm pretty sure I PR'd in terms of viewing time. You'll be happy to know that I blazed through those six episodes like a champion. We also talk about our friend Travis' FANTASTIC new album called Spirit Rise (Melanie and I both adore it) as well as our realization that we don't really care about awards shows anymore. Our 20-something selves don't know how to process this development. Enjoy, everybody! Become a Patron! We'd love for you to subscribe on iTunes, and we'd be honored if you'd leave us a review. The Worship Together Team recaps the end of 2019 and Travis Cottrell shares insight into his latest album release “Spirit Rise”. Travis shares his thoughts on the importance of writing accessible songs for the local church, and explains how serving and sharing real-life experiences with people in his congregation has shaped his songwriting.
"Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”" Joy To The World - Lyric Video Words by: Isaac Watts Music by: George Freidrich Händel New Words and Music by: Ben Tan, Melodie Wagner, Michael Guy Chislett, Autumn Hardman, and Harrison Wood. This is our last regular episode of 2019 (still more goodness to come this Sunday over on Patreon, though), and man oh man do we have ourselves some laughs. From how much we love Lane Kiffin's Twitter to the motivational speeches that we give our kids to our rage when people back into parking places (THE NERVE, I TELL YOU), it is good times aplenty on episode 165. We also do a little reflecting on this past decade (so many changes!), and I share a v.v. important mascara tip that our friend Marti in Charlotte was kind enough to pass along for the good of the group. Plus, Melanie has a Netflix recommendation. So basically it's a win all the way around, and MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERY ONE. Enjoy, y'all! Become a Patron! So true story: we spend the first ten minutes of this episode talking about the raccoon that was in Melanie's chimney. I feel like I may never get to write a sentence like that again. We also discuss the latest with my bathroom remodel, the latest with college football, and the latest with some coaches we have grown to admire over the years - complete with a Tender Hallmark Moment (TM) about Why Coaches Matter (and man oh man - do they ever matter). Also, mark your calendars for our Christmas Gift Guide Episode the week of November 18th, and we'll have a special Christmas episode with our beloved Travis Cottrell on Patreon in early December. Well, our good friend Travis Cottrell is back with us this week, and oh, do we have a fine time. However, since y'all know how we like to pride ourselves on technological excellence, you might as well be aware that apparently my microphone wasn't completely plugged in for this episode. So be forewarned that I sound considerably more tin-ny than normal. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED, however, because Melanie and Travis managed to get their microphones connected and it all works out fine in the end. On this episode we talk about our sleeping preferences (pillows, comforter weight, side of bed, etc.) and prove once and for all that Melanie and I are not low-maintenance individuals. Melanie also shares her surefire method for hacking hotel thermostats, and my enthusiasm for this bit of information probably reveals more about me than I'd like. We also answer more of your questions and cover a whole lot of conversational ground (you have never seen three people agonize more over their hypothetical guests to a hypothetical dinner party than we do). “This isn’t about what I want to say or what I think, the song has to be about what people want to hear” In Episode 74, John Chisum sits down with veteran songwriter, Sue C. Smith. Sue has written 15 #1 songs, including "Mourning Into Dancing" (The Bowlings) in March 2017, and "I Choose Christ" (Karen Peck and New River) in July 2017. In 2017 she was named Absolutely Gospel Music Songwriter of the Year. She is deeply involved in writing music for the church and for church choirs, having written over 80 musicals which are presented in churches around the world. “As a songwriter, you have to have the courage to persist with an idea until you find the person that God wants you to write it with” Sue is a five-time Dove award winning songwriter who has had cuts by Avalon, Jason Crabb, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Crabb Family, Sandi Patty, Guy Penrod, Travis Cottrell, Mark Harris, Larnelle Harris, Steve Green, Janet Paschal, Pure NRG, Triumphant Quartet, Ernie Haase and Signature Sound, Brian Free and Assurance, The Hoppers, and many others. Sue shares her insight into the process of songwriting and gives practical tips that will help you become the songwriter you were always meant to be. “If we’re going to worship God for all of eternity, we’re going to be writing new songs to sing, so there will be new things to say and new ways to say it” She and her late husband, John, founded The Write About Jesus Workshop in 2000 and have hosted it each year since then. The workshop has been the launch pad for the songwriting of dozens of fresh voices in Christian music. Write About jesus is also actively engaged in encouraging and training songwriters around the world, and Sue has made visits to Myanmar, India and Uganda in that effort. This is part two of our recent conversation with our funny, wise, loves-him-some-80's-music friend, Travis Cottrell. After we wrapped up lo, all of our many thoughts about 80's songs, we moved into some serious reminiscing (at least from Melanie and me) about the country music of the early 90s. And then we talked about at least twenty more artists / songs that filled our 20s with love and happiness and all manner of wonderful memories. You can find links to those playlists in the show notes. We also got to ask Travis some questions about recording his latest worship album, The Reason, and we had the best time listening to him talk about that process. There's also a moment where all three of us demonstrated some significant affection for Popeye's, and really, this should be no surprise at all. Up next: episode 100! Thanks for listening, everybody. As you can imagine, Melanie and I were delighted to have our good friend Travis Cottrell join us on Episode 98. We caught up on life in general - what's been going on with our kids, spring sports, Travis' feelings about the reboot of American Idol - and we also talked a little about Travis' FANTASTIC new worship album, The Reason. More than anything else, though, we enjoyed the fire out of a discussion about music from the 70s and 80s. It was a musical memory lane to beat the band (see what I did there)? It was so in-depth, in fact, that I finally decided to make a playlist of (almost) everything we mentioned (WHY isn't "And When She Danced" from Stealing Home available on any sort of streaming service, I ask you?). All that to say: we had a blast talking with Travis - so much so that there will be a part 2 posted in the next few days. Hope y'all enjoy it! Our good friend Travis Cottrell is with us on this episode of the podcast, and we talk about all manner of unrelated topics. We dig into some Christmas traditions, discuss our favorite Christmas music, break down the college football play-offs (along with our coaching changes), and ponder the deep well of teenage sarcasm that is currently full to overflowing in all of our homes. Also, you'd better believe that Neil Diamond makes an appearance. Or two. Or three. Be warned: Melanie, Travis, and I talk about so much stuff that you may never get through all the links. But in case you'd like to try, you can find most of what we mention below. Hope y'all enjoy this one - we sure did have a blast recording it. - Travis Cottrell - Russian Tea - Mannheim Steamroller's "Silent Night" (Trav's all-time fave) - Travis' Ring the Bells Christmas album - Audrey Assad's "Winter Snow" (Mel's all-time fave) - Daniel Renstrom's "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus" (Soph's all-time fave) - Christy Nockels' "The King is Coming" - A Charlie Brown Christmas - Melanie's Christmas Toffee - Sophie's favorite Chex Mix recipe - Sophie's favorite Christmas gift she's ever received (aka "my precious) - Red Bubble (SO MANY great things for teenagers) - Playstation 4 - Elf on a Shelf (clearly Sophie will not be purchasing) :-) - Travis' Christmas sweater - Travis, Beth Moore, & Mandisa on the Living Proof Christmas Special (starts around 19:52) - Mandisa's testimony - Neil Diamond Christmas playlist - Travis on Instagram - Melanie on Instagram - Sophie on Instagram

By all accounts, Tony Wood is the epitome of successful Christian songwriting. It's always a treat to have our friend Travis Cottrell on the podcast, and this episode is no exception. We cover a wide stretch of conversational ground: favorite football snacks, the wonder of an Amish donut, our ever-growing kids, current Bible study options, and, of course, our obsession with rose hip oil. (That last one was more of a discussion between Melanie and me. But Travis was as patient as he could be when we talked about it.) (Or maybe he was just distracted.) We also reminisce about shampoos from the 70s. I would try to give you some context, but it's probably just easier if you listen for yourself. And no joke: Melanie must have taken her one-liner pill before we recorded; there are some Shankle Gems (I think we may have to trademark that phrase) (only not really) scattered throughout. Enjoy, y'all! Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - Travis Cottrell - Nut Thins crackers - Chicken in a Biscuit crackers - Beanitos - Melanie and Perry's wedding picture - "George. George Glass." - Awaken by Priscilla Shirer - Goliath Must Fall by Louie Giglio (from Sophie: I totally forgot to mention that this book is what our small group is reading this fall) - Community Worship San Antonio - Entrusted by Beth Moore - Seamless by Angie Smith - The One Year Josh McDowell's Youth Devotions - Teddie Organics Rose Hip Oil - Toni Home Perm - "The Best Beauty Lessons We've Picked Up From Kate Middleton" - Dear Evan Hansen - Melanie's new book - Church of the Small Things - Sophie's new journaling devotional - All in All - Melanie on Twitter and Instagram - Sophie on Twitter and Instagram
Earlier today Melanie and I decided to try to record a podcast, and lo and behold, our schedules cooperated. Then, on a whim, I texted our good friend Travis Cottrell to see if he could join us, and when he said that he could, I'm pretty sure that I heard some angels sing. Or maybe that was just Hazel barking at the UPS driver. But regardless, it was a moment. So. We discuss our thoughts about conveying tone in texts, the latest on Melanie's kitchen (complete with a coffee bar update), and then we cover a wide range of ground with Travis, including our favorite moments of 2016. Also, in keeping with the theme of our delivery-heavy holiday season, Hazel barks a good bit. I'm just as sorry as I can be about that. Enjoy, y'all! This is our first podcast with A Very Special Guest Star. Ladies and gentlemen, Travis Cottrell. {wild applause} {and also, quite a bit of woo-hoo'ing} And while you might think that Big Mama and I tried to be all subdued and professional and calm during this podcast, you would be wrong. Travis, God love him, had to listen to a great deal of Talk About Dresses that I edited out, but we were kind enough to not drag him into some sort of discussion about our hair. That would have been cruel and unusual punishment indeed. However, we do talk about The Office, Angela's Legendary Jeans, and the fact that my town is about to get a fancy new department store. I know. Travis was probably screaming on the inside, desperately pleading with God for one of us to PLEASE TALK ABOUT FOOTBALL. And if the beginning of the podcast sounds disjointed, that's because it is. You will think, "I don't believe they mentioned that before," and you will be right. I had to do some serious editing to the very beginning because of all our talking and rambling and rambling some more, but after about five minutes, the narrative structure will be CRYSTAL CLEAR, my friends. Or not. But still. We can pretend. And once we get going, the three of us spend a lot of time on the internets' (great and oh-so-fun) questions; there's all sorts of cool info about how Travis and Angela met, what happened when they went to American Idol, and how Travis started doing ministry with that girl named Beth who has written some Bible studies and EVEN SOME BOOKS, Y'ALL. They say she speaks, too, but I'm not sure that I believe them. We didn't get through all the questions - not by a long shot - and that is why we've already planned a part 2. And a part 3. Because for Big Mama and me, this whole process has been like finding a brother we never knew we had. And for Travis, this whole process has been like finding two sisters he's not entirely sure he wants. Because he has plenty of real sisters already. And Big Mama and I can be a little loud. Oh, it is a precious time.
