Dr. Chad Nelsen, CEO of the Surfrider Foundation, joins us on The Lineup to discuss his role in protecting the world's oceans, waves, and beaches. From Surfrider's hometown of Laguna Beach, Dr. Nelsen shares insights on the foundation's 40th anniversary, their network of 200+ chapters, and the complex evolution of environmental activism. We dive into real-world challenges—mangrove deforestation in Puerto Rico and coastal erosion on Hawaii's North Shore—and discuss how the Surfrider Foundation combines legal and scientific strategies to tackle these issues. Dr. Nelsen also opens up about his journey, from growing up in a surfing family on Long Island to his lifelong commitment to ocean conservation. He reflects on the impact of climate change on coastlines and the need for public action, urging listeners to get involved in the fight for sustainable practices. We explore how surfing, though a niche sport, can drive environmental awareness and political influence. A key example is the Save Trestles campaign, which successfully halted plans for a six-lane toll road that would have cut through San Onofre State Beach, the Donna O'Neill Land Conservancy, sacred Native American sites, and threatened the San Mateo Creek Watershed. With partnerships with local communities, WSL and WSL PURE, as well as ambassadors like Carissa Moore, Dr. Cliff Kapono, and Greg Long, the Surfrider Foundation strives to inspire both surfers and non-surfers alike to make a difference. Tune in to learn more about Dr. Chad Nelsen and how joining a local Surfrider chapter can empower communities and spark positive change. Learn more about Surfrider here and follow them here. "We do not just keep and collect things. We trouble ourselves to repurpose, create, and invent things just to carry, a little easier, those stories we cannot live without." —Kendra Greene In this episode of Deviate, Rolf speaks to the directors of two very different museums -- Dawn Hammat of the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum & Boyhood Home in Abilene, Kansas, and Greg Long of Long's Collectible Showplace & Gift Shop in Salina, Kansas (0:00); what people are drawn to in a given museum, and how a kind of nostalgia drives what people look for there (5:30); the ways all museums change and adapt over time, and how museums can surprise their visitors (12:00). Next up in our Californian Omnibus we met with Christian Beamish – Surfer, Shaper, Sailor and Writer, Christian is somewhat of an underground yet widely known stalwart of the surfing world. Calling the likes of the Malloy brothers, Greg Long and others close friends. A lifelong devotee of surf, frequenting waves from Ireland to France and the Philippines plus countless others off the beaten track accessible to him whilst serving in the U.S. Navy – Christian has quietly dedicated his life to the sea. More thoroughly accounted for was his solo sail from San Diego down through Baja in his self-constructed boat, beautifully retold in ‘Voyage of the Cormorant – memoir of a changeable sea'. A line of sight crossing and self-reliant exploration for surf – one that saw him sleeping under canvas tarp whist anchored up to the kelp beds, surfing and fishing in pristine ocean with no one around and lentil and coffee rations as he lived by the weather systems in an 18foot open boat. The book not just about the sailing and the people he met along the way but a wonderful account of an inner and outer journey. There are few people able to write about surf in a way that speaks to a wider audience, William Finnegan always comes to mind, but Christian is certainly another. Something that no doubt comes through years of experience as associate editor of the revered Surfers Journal. In sitting down, we spoke about stoking the fire for adventure, night surfing and deep-water surf, board shaping and boat building and went off on a few other tangents you'll come to hear. Ill add, we were sat in the showroom behind Christians shaping bay so you will hear some background chatter and a cameo from Chrstians daughter halfway through… So here we go, Episode 18 of Hell or High Water with Christian Beamish – Boats, Boards and Baja.

Never have the stakes been higher. We are facing an environmental crisis,... climate change, soil degradation, plastic pollution and loss of biodiversity. While business is often at the root of these problems, it can also be a part of the solution. Today I am talking with Richard Yelland and Jeremy Black, producers of the documentary, Seeding Change. Richard, a highly accomplished filmmaker and Jeremy, a co-founder of Sambazon, set out to tell the story of Sambazon and their journey over the last 20 years as an organic, fair-trade Acai company. Along the way, they realized there was a bigger story to tell, that of how triple bottom line businesses like Sambazon, are making a positive impact in the world. Today we're talking about all that lead up to the film Seeding Change and, of course, the film itself and its mission to educate consumers on how we can all help save the world one purchase at a time. About Richard Yelland Richard Yelland is an Emmy® Award nominated director and award-winning filmmaker. Powerful visuals and strong performances are a trademark of his projects for Nike, HISTORY, Surfrider Foundation, Sambazon & Outside Television. “Richard is a fantastic filmmaker,” said Oscar® nominee Morgan Spurlock. Richard's documentary film "Floating: The Nathan Gocke Story", was ‘Emerging Documentary' winner at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. His next film, 12 Miles North: The Nick Gabaldon Story, presented by Nike, tells the story of the first-documented African American surfer and is “Unlike any surf film you've ever seen,” according to ESPN. 12 Miles North was a 2014 Webby Award winner and inspired Santa Monica's annual Nick Gabaldon Day. "Sine Qua Non: The Psychology of Big Wave Surfing with Greg Long", Richard's following effort, was an official selection at the Maui Film Festival and winner at the 2014 BLUE Ocean Film Festival. His latest feature, "The Long Way Back" documents the addiction that nearly killed Todd ‘Z Man' Zalkins after the overdose of his longtime friend and Sublime front man, Bradley Nowell. A Best Documentary winner at The Phoenix Film Festival, The "Long Way Back" received exclusive coverage in Rolling Stone and global distribution from The Orchard (SONY). Richard received his Emmy nomination for “Pool,” a PSA he wrote and directed for the Life Rolls On Foundation featuring wheelchair "pool skater" Darwin Holmes. About Jeremy Black Jeremy Black is a co-founder of Sambazon Acai. Taking the leap from a successful career as a financial planner, Jeremy joined brother Ryan Black (CEO) and friend Ed Nichols in early 2000 to introduce açaí to the U.S.market. In addition to helping create global awareness and demand for an unknown fruit, the team pioneered a sustainable business model in the Amazon to import organic, fair trade superfoods. Jeremy was a key player in Sambazon's rapid growth from startup to a $100+ Million dollar global brand. From meager beginnings of one product at a handful of juice bars around Southern California, Jeremy spearheaded the development of the brand, the products and the marketing for a full portfolio of products in frozen, juice, energy and supplement categories that are now sold in health food stores, juice bars and conventional grocery stores across the globe. Over the past 17 years, Jeremy helped the Sambazon team create an entirely new category in the natural foods category and a business that creates positive socio-economic and environmental change. As an avid surfer, yogi and snowboarder, Sambazon has become a way of life for Jeremy, providing organic energy for worldwide travels and active pursuits. If they made a Mt. Rushmore of influential Californian big-wave surfers, a couple names would probably come to mind off the bat. Peter Mel. Greg Long. Of course, four spots just isn’t fair, but the footprints of a lean, former pro surfer turned big-wave specialist from Laguna Beach nicknamed Snips loom large, indeed. From pivotal sessions at Todos Santos and Mav’s, to exploring and bagging world records at Cortes Bank, to barrels at Jaws…Snips has seen some things. In the newest episode of the Late Drop, Jamie Mitchell raps out with the man who deserves a face etched in stone. 0:00 Wavepool talk, Growing up in Laguna Beach, CA, Surfing steep shorebreak, Amateur comp career, Trouble reading in school, Parents supporting his surfing career14:00 Getting 2nd in US Championships, Traveling with NSSA national team, Getting into big wave surfing in Hawaii, Competing against the elements, Starting/selling VonZipper, Getting on the Billabong Oddysey team, 1998 Todos Santos session K2 Challenge29:11 Teaming up with Brad Gerlach, Getting into surf forecasting with Sean Collins, Getting his pilot’s license37:02 The Cortez Bank mission in 2001, Catches 66-foot wave that day, Going back to Cortez in 2008 with Twiggy and Greg Long, Catches 77-foot wave for world record46:56 Relationship with Maverick’s, Mark Foo’s death at Mav’s, Watching out for friends while surfing big waves57:45 Breaking his back, The Big Wave World Tour, Memorable big waves of his life, Watching Laird tow surfing at Jaws for the first time1:11:21 Snip’s 5-to-Finish

the vet that just can’t keep out of the danger zone… Welcome to Episode Six of Season Two of Late Drop – The Big Wave podcast. The series was created to showcase conversations with some of the best big-wave surfers in the world — hosted by one of the best big-wave surfers in the world. New episodes will drop on Surfline every other week — upcoming guests include, Bob Pearson, Buzzy Kerbox and others. Stay tuned here for more. Speakin’ of Mav’s….Why not drop an episode of Jamie Mitchell (who recently charged the run of XXL swells to hit Maverick’s) with one of the OG water patrol and photographers to document Cali’s finest big wave arena? Enter: Frank Quirarte, a man whose byline you’ve probably seen on the best photos of Mav’s for the past 30-odd years. What many may not know of the man is his influence and loyalty to keeping the boys and girls safe out there -- year in and year out -- and much of that drive probably owed to his own military experience in his youth. Days before flying over to surf the subject of interest, Jamie Mitchell sat down with Frank in the newest episode of the Late Drop. 0:00: Growing up in Northern California not far from Maverick’s, Airforce experience, Becoming an EMT, Getting into photography, Managing the rescue team for Quiksilver,The merits of operating a Jet Ski from tow movement15:35: Getting on retainer with SURFING mag, Training with the Coast Guard with first big wave safety, Building the Billabong XXL project, Traveling with Greg Long, Staring the Maverick’s Water Patrol/Rescue 28:31: The Growth of BWRAG, Era of Billabong Odyssy Trips, Big Wave rescue first/photography second 37:35: Frank’s favorite places to shoot, Shooting “Chasing Mavericks,” Shooting Nazaré 52:20: Frank’s expectations for this winter, More core surfers at Mav’s, The progression Frank has seen over the years, 1:31:56: Frank’s 5 to finish questions

When it comes to big-wave personalities, there’s certainly all types, but traditionally, these personalities have been, well…big. There’s the “Are you not impressed?” chest beaters. There’s the incorrigible closeout-slab-hunting hellmen (and women). There’s the egomaniacs. The wanna-be Lairds. The actual Laird. And then there’s a rare gem like San Clemente’s Rusty Long. The quiet-type. The epitome of anti-ego. A guy who’s been rushing in extremely heavy water since his teens (often, with younger brother Greg Long), Rusty’s created a life devoted to big-wave riding, with various homes in strategic big wave zones across the globe. Lucky for us, longtime Rusty-fan and podcast host, Jamie Mitchell, coaxed more than a few words and great stories from the elusive dark horse, himself, in Episode 4. Tune in and enjoy. 0:00: COVID quarantine in Baja, Rusty’s childhood in San Clemente, Teaching water safety to kids, Dad and other lifeguards’ influence in life14:10: Being a junior lifeguard, Point when Rusty began to surf bigger waves, Pivotal Todos Santos session, Pushing it with brother Greg, Chris Bertish sightings25:01: The Point when Rusty was fully committed to hunting big waves, Buying Jet Skis, Cortes Bank sessions32:25: Innovations in big wave surfing, Big wave exploration, Puerto Escondido connection41:47: Favorite places around the world, Crazy Ireland swell, Great people in raw places, Homes in Madeira and Puerto52:14: Cycle of West swells, Maverick’s, Wipeout advice at Mav’s59:46: Current big wave inspirations, Thoughts on the state of big wave surfing, Resurgence of tow surfing, Airs in big waves1:04:06: The future of big wave surfing, Rusty’s 5-to-Finish Questions

We’re joined this week by self-proclaimed grinder Greg Long, the owner of Pro-Active Health known by many as the Zen Cowboy. We talk about his 23 year history as a chiropractor, how he utilizes yoga within his practice, and how a yoga teaching course in Bali resulted in his unique nickname. Like many kids growing up in Alberta Greg was certain he’d grow up to play for the Edmonton Oilers. When time came to apply for college and he was without an offer from the Oilers he attended a career fair and watched a lecture about chiropractic medicine. The lecture was put on by a chiropractor who still operates his own practice and Greg says that something in the lecture just spoke to him and he was super intrigued to pursue the opportunity. When Greg first came home after that that lecture and told his mother was … “not stoked.” She had heard some of the popular myths at the time about chiropractors she was worried about her son’s career choice, but has since come around. And while the general public consciousness and acceptance of chiropractic medicine has changed immensely in the past two decades Greg recalls chiropractors like himself being viewed as the black sheep of the medical world early in his career. In 2002 Greg had the opportunity to open his own practice in Cochrane which has since grown to include massage therapists, osteopaths, other chiropractors, a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, and the use of yoga as movement therapy. Greg absolutely gushes about the team at his practice and how without a single weak link in the group they’re able to achieve their goal of making sure all of their patients Leave Better. Type 2 is a podcast from Looking Sideways in association with Patagonia that explores the intersection between the outdoors, action sports and activism. The first episode of Type 2 features Greg Long. Greg is a big wave surfer from San Clemente who made his name as a standout at the planet’s biggest and most intimidating waves. He has won the Eddie, the Red Bull Titans of Mavericks and multiple XXL awards including Biggest Wave, Ride of the Year and Performance of the Year. In December 2012, Greg suffered a wipeout at Cortes Bank that almost killed him. It was an experience that changed Greg’s life. And the ensuing epiphany put him on the path he’s following today. Sure, he still surfs the world’s biggest waves. But he is also committed to using his platform to share his experiences and knowledge in practical, productive ways, whether that’s through his work with the Big Wave Risk Assessment Group, or by raising awareness about ways we can protect the ocean environment and help solve the environmental challenges ahead. I met Greg on a recent visit to Huntington Beach and we sat down to record this conversation about his own approach to activism in the light of the experience that changed his life. New episodes of Type 2 will be released every four weeks through my Looking Sideways channel. Hear it by subscribing to Looking Sideways via ApplePodcasts, Spotify, Podbean, OvercastFM or any of the usual other podcast providers. Thanks to Ewan Wallace for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.

The original episode was meant to feature both Graeme Marsh, who we heard on the last episode, as well as Greg Long. None of us could have prepared for the fact that in the middle of the episode, Greg's ceiling had water pouring out of it. It was unexpected, to say the least!Fortunately for us, we got to catch up with Greg for a more in depth discussion. So what do dirty socks have to do with the lungs of our homes and buildings? Listen to this episode to learn more about smelly biofilms, probiotic cleaners and the tip of the thermodynamic spear - the all-powerful, but often-ignored HVAC coil. The heat exchanger coil in our HVAC system is where the magic of heat transfer happens - this is where the rubber meets the road when it comes to "conditioning" air. If the word "coil" is not connecting to a mental image, you can think of the radiator in your car. Just as in a car, when it's working you don't give your radiator much thought - we often ignore our HVAC coils, and at our peril. All of the indoor air we heat and cool flows through our HVAC coil. Unfortunately sometimes our magic, all-powerful coils are coated with a smelly, gelatinous, living glop in the form of an unwanted biofilm.Listen to this episode to learn more about the under-reported reality of biofilms in HVAC equipment and what to do about them to keep your coil and conditioned air clean and odor-free.Earl Gregory (Greg) Long, CIEC, ASCSMr. Long is president of IAQ Consulting Services Inc. in Belton, TX (not far from the Positive Energy and Building Science Podcast headquarters). IAQ Consulting Services Inc, is a consulting firm that offers estimating, project management, specification writing, investigations services and project oversight specializing in HVAC system restoration and cleaning, coil cleaning, structure restoration and dehumidification, and content restoration, with focus on restorative processes over replacement when applicable.Areas of additional experience include rust eradication and prevention within HVAC systems, fiberglass insulation removal and replacement with closed cell insulation within HVAC systems, drain pan restoration, water and air leakage and odor control. I Tunes Stitcher Greg Long (@GergLong) is by any standard the sport's most celebrated big wave surfer—and by those same standards the most successful. In a career that now spans two decades Long, 33, has been awarded virtually every title in the big wave riding arena, including multiple XXL Global Big Wave Awards including Biggest Wave, Ride of the Year and Performer of the Year. He is the only surfer to win all three of the sport's premier big wave competitions, including “The Eddie” at Waimea Bay, and was crowned 2013 Big Wave World Tour Champion. His list of accolades include the SIMA “Waterman of the Year Award”, a National Geographic “Adventurer of the Year” nomination and the runner-up placing on Men's Journal magazine's “50 Most Adventurous Men” ranking. In 2012 Long was featured in the Fox Pictures release “Chasing Mavericks” both performing surf stunts and as a story character, and had the starring role in the 2014 ESPN adventure series “Big Wave Hellmen”. Yet despite amassing a ‘Maverick's size' resume in danger waves, Greg Long hardly fits the stereotype of the extreme athlete (read; daredevil) who pushes himself closer and closer to edge in search of the ultimate video clip. An inveterate explorer, Long has circled the globe pursuing a much more personal form of self-expression, chasing storms to some of the most remote coastlines on earth, riding giant waves alone, or with a few close friends, far from the cameras and the limelight. Deeply thoughtful and well informed, Long has become one of the sport's most articulate spokesman, lending his perspective and credibility to a number of ocean-oriented environmental groups, including The Surfrider Foundation, Save The Waves and Sustainable Surf. And, perhaps most significantly, he's served as a volunteer/ambassador with organizations like Surfers Healing and the Best Day Foundation, both which offer unique “surf therapy” to autistic and ‘special needs' youth; sharing his love of the ocean, and the spiritual alignment he finds in waves of any size. In this episode, the hosts of MonsterTalk talk with Greg Long, author of the 2004 book The Making of Bigfoot (which was reviewed at the time by Skeptic’s own Daniel Loxton). Long’s book is built from hours of interviews with surviving contemporaries of Roger Patterson, the filmmaker who shot the influential Patterson-Gimlin footage. For many people, this film remains the best evidence that Bigfoot is real. However, Long’s research uncovered a side of Patterson most people had never heard of before — and it isn’t pretty. According to Long, the famed Bigfoot film shows nothing more than a man in a modified gorilla suit. Moreover, Long may have found the man who wore it… READ full episode notes
Brand new music from Michael W Smith, Brandon Heath and Greg Long along with an Amy Grant classic and a visit to Third Day's 1996 debut album.
Greg Long is a professional writer, investigative journalist, and editor who lives in Washington state. He has been researching and writing about "mysteries" and unexplained phenomena of the Pacific Northwest for twenty-five years. His work has been featured on radio and television, including the Discovery Channel. His most recent book is The Making of Bigfoot: The Inside Story. In this discussion with D.J. Grothe, Greg Long discusses the famous Roger Patterson Bigfoot film from 1967, and why he says it is a hoax. He details his argument about Patterson's motivations, evidence from the costumer's perspective on why the creature in the film is almost certainly a man dressed in an ape suit, and the confession obtained from the person who wore it. He offers theories about why belief in the creature is so widely held, and what role the media plays in the public's belief in Bigfoot. He examines the recent reports of Bigfoot in the Atlanta area. And he explores the psychological reasons people may believe in Bigfoot, including how it may symbolize certain truths about humanity's evolutionary origins. He also argues why such skeptical inquiry into possibly trivial matters like Bigfoot is so important in our society.
