Mike Donehey—lead voice of Tenth Avenue North—joins us to talk about life, music, and learning to listen for God's voice in the middle of it all. He shares reflections on the band's 20-year journey, the decision to call it quits, and the unexpected nudge to return to the road with a new band and a new perspective. From his Nebraska roots to the deep relationships that have shaped him, Mike opens up about the interruptions that became invitations from God, including a powerful season of being home with his family during a time of personal struggle for one of his daughters. In this conversation, Mike talks candidly about ambition, identity, purpose, and the rhythms of life that keep him grounded. He shares the inspiration behind songs like “Kind to Myself” and how learning to speak kindly to ourselves aligns with how God approaches us—with grace and gentleness. Whether he's reflecting on discipleship, parenting, or playing basketball at the Y, Mike offers honest insight into what it means to live out the Gospel—not just from a stage, but in the everyday moments that matter most.

Unquestionably one of the best bands in Christian music in the 2000s was Tenth Avenue North. Their front man, Mike Donehey, is my guest today and he joins me to talk about their career and why things are much different in the music industry than they were 20 years ago. Mike has a lot to say about an artist's calling and the necessity for deep friendship.

Read Luke 8: 1-3 and Isaiah 43: 1.1. What is Mary Magdalene's condition before meeting Jesus? Whathappens when she meets Jesus?2. What demons do you wrestle with in life? Do you believe Jesus canremove these demons from your life?3. What part of the video clip did you find most impactful? Why?4. Read Jeremiah 1: 5 and Isaiah 49: 16. What do these passages tell usabout God's love for us? How does that make you feel? How mightthis change the way you live?5. In the video, Jesus says to Mary, “That's not for you.” What was Hetalking about? Was there a deeper meaning? Are there things in yourlife now to which Jesus would say, “That's not for you.”?6. The chorus of the Tenth Avenue North song, “You Are More” says,“You are more than the choices that you've made, You are more thanthe sum of your past mistakes, You are more than the problems youcreate, You've been remade.” How does this relate to Mary's story? To your story?7. Read Isaiah 43: 1. How does that verse make you feel? Is that versemeant for everyone?8. How does God's grace heal, transform and empower us to live withpurpose and share the Good News?Prayer for the Week:Gracious and loving God,We come before You today, humbled and in awe of Your great love andfaithfulness. We thank You for the example of Mary Magdalene, whoencountered Your grace and mercy in the midst of her pain andbrokenness. Just as You called her by name, You call each of us by name—reminding us that we are never lost to You, no matter how far we mayhave wandered. We know that we belong to You, and that in Your eyes,we are precious, loved, and seen. We rejoice in knowing that we are morethan our mistakes, more than our past, more than the labels the worldmay try to place on us. We are redeemed! Help us to walk in the freedomof this redemption through Your life-changing grace and remind us thatour true identity is found in You alone. We pray all of this in the mightyand merciful name of Jesus. Amen.
"Send us a message! (questions, feedback, etc.)"Over the past 25 years in Christian music, few other bands have been as influential or have a sound as instantly recognizable as Tenth Avenue North. They have released multiple records with hope-filled songs for people who live with crippling shame. Tenth Avenue North's "frontman," Mike Donehey, started the band while all the members were in college. For two decades their music was everywhere - on the radio, on people's iPods, and being sung & played in churches all over the world. Then in 2020, growing families and the toll of being on the road led the band to call it quits. As Mike says, they were committed "not to sacrifice family on the altar of our band."After a short time as a solo artist, Mike really missed playing with a band, and in a gift to all of us recently relaunched Tenth Avenue North. The sound is fresh but still familiar, some of the other members are new, but the purpose is the same... as Mike puts it: "I just want to lift peoples' shame, one song at a time."Our conversation chases down a lot of paths - a (literal) back-breaking high school injury that was the catalyst to Mike learning to play guitar, to the early days of the band, to the things he learned in transition, to what provides creative "irritation" for not only songwriting but also writing books. Throughout the conversation, though, what is constant is Mike's thoughtfulness and focus on things that really matter.#mikedonehey #tenthavenuenorth #noshame #thestruggle #thelightmeetsthedark #followers #cathedrals #findinggodslifeformywill #graceinthegray #gospel #grace #awaken #awakenrecovery #awakenpodcast #whatwereallywant #wwrw #connection #conversationTenth Avenue North band websiteMike Donehey artist websiteMike's booksAwaken websiteRoots Retreat Men's IntensiveRoots Retreat Women's WorkshopAwaken Men & Women's support meeting info (including virtual)
What is God's will for my life? This week's episode dives deep into this so-simple-to-answer question... We start with a thought-provoking Instagram reel by Mike Donehey (@mikedonehey), lead singer of Tenth Avenue North. Spoiler alert: God's will might not be about your career path, hobbies, or even your relationship status. Join us as we unpack two transformative Bible passages: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18...Be joyful always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus Micah 6:8...Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. These scriptures challenge us to rethink the pressure to “figure out” life and instead embrace a calling centered on trust, gratitude, and faith in Jesus Christ. Whether you're single, dating, engaged, or married, this episode provides a biblical framework for living with purpose and peace in every season. Discover how surrendering your plans to God opens the door to deeper spiritual growth and joy. If you've ever wondered how to navigate life's twists and turns with a Christ-centered perspective, this conversation will equip and encourage you to anchor your soul in God's eternal love and truth. Original Instagram Reel can be found here.

Today we continue our weeklong focus on forgiveness, by looking at the incredible gift of forgiveness we've been offered in Jesus. Every command God has given us, he has already supplied the grace to live in obedience to. Forgiveness is no different. May we find the grace to forgive as we rest in the forgiveness we've already been offered through our Savior. Our Scripture for today comes from Ephesians 4:32, and today's worship is Forgive Me by Tenth Avenue North. -- Thanks for listening to today's First15 Podcast. My name is Ryn, and I'm a part of the First15 Team. If you haven't downloaded our brand new First15 app, make sure to click the link in today's show notes to check it out! One of the new features that you can enjoy when you download the app is our Guided Prayers. We are adding new prayers to our library every month, so if you need a moment of peace with God, let these prayers be your guide! Do you ever struggle with forgiveness? Sometimes it's difficult to understand how to translate God's forgiveness of us so that we can learn to forgive ourselves. In today's prayer, our friend Hannah Smith points us to scripture as she helps us engage with the Lord about what that really looks like. She reminds us that it is God's forgiveness of us that helps us know how to extend the same to others, and helps us see that our confession is what truly opens the door of our hearts to receive both the mercy and forgiveness of God in a profound and life changing way.
Mike Donehey has seen his fair share of the unexpected. Following a potentially fatal car crash as a teen, Mike learned to play the guitar while still in bed recovering from his injuries. Learning the guitar quickly gave birth to songwriting, and that songwriting quickly led to the formation of a band. That band, Tenth Avenue North, became one of the most loved and successful artists in Christian music. Beginning with their acclaimed national debut, Over and Underneath, Tenth Avenue North's audience multiplied with each new album and hit song, like radio favorites “Love Is Here,” “By Your Side,” “You Are More,” “Losing,” “Worn,” “I Have This Hope,” and multi-week no. 1 smash “Control (Somehow You Want Me).” At the beginning of 2020, despite widespread notoriety and a devout following, Tenth Avenue North's members began to sense they each had their own unexpected and unique roads to follow. Mike has seized this opportunity, reveling in the excitement to expand as a storyteller, communicator and thought instigator wherever his voice is heard. Mike's acclaimed book, Finding God's Life for My Will, was an immediate best-seller upon its release. It is soon to be followed by his next book, Grace In The Gray, releasing in January 2023. Mike's podcast, Chasing the Beauty, looks for the joy of God in the places we didn't think it could be on the AccessMore network. Perhaps most exciting has been Mike's writing and producing new music. His acclaimed solo album Flourish is just the beginning of the flow of new music coming our way. The unexpected has a way of disrupting our lives in ways we might not have ever chosen. For Mike, learning to embrace the unexpected has been the very thing that has brought forth encouraging and soul-healing art time and time again. Looking forward, Mike is trusting to be led in any way that will allow him to continue to serve and inspire. Mike Donehey is a singer/songwriter and the former lead man with Tenth Avenue North. Starring on the soccer team at his high school in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Donehey and two of his teammates were driving to a game one day in September 1998 when his Honda swerved out of control, flipped several times and crashed into a tree. Donehey's injuries were numerous: a fractured skull, fractured vertebrae, 96 stitches, five days in intensive care, and he was told he would never walk again. Two months later, Donehey proved the doctors wrong and was up and moving and walking. It was during that time in recovery that he picked up a guitar for the first time and discovered a love for music. That passion has taken him down a road he has remained on for the past 20 years. In 2019, Donehey released his first book, “Finding God's Life For My Will,” and in early 2023, he released his second book, "Grace in the Gray." Today on the podcast, Donehey shares about humanizing professional athletes, disagreeing like Jesus and his love for Tony Romo broadcasting NFL games. Today as we look at the Holy of Holies, we'll see how Jesus fulfilled the requirements of God's law and is the perfect High Priest on our behalf. As we learn of all Jesus' sacrifice accomplished, may our hearts swell in worship and thanks to our King. Our Scripture for today comes from Hebrews 10:19-22, and today's worship is Cathedrals by Tenth Avenue North. -- Jesus' invitation in Matthew 11 to find real rest is for YOU. First15's brand-new devotional book called Rhythms was written with you in mind.
