She came on to the scene with her number one hit “Mother, Mother.” It was the last time a female solo artist top the modern Rock tracks chart for 17 years. There were two videos for the song. One featuring Tracy's actual mother. We also discuss the drama behind her follow up album, Down Here. She re-recorded her debut album entitled modern Burdens with some amazing female singers. She was apart of Lilith Fair. Although she didn't perform, she saw first hand the disaster that was Woodstock 99. Hi! I am so happy to share my podcast interview with the esteemed Southern writer George Singleton. We delved into some serious subjects: the legacy of racism in the South, gun control, and substance abuse, but despite all of that, we managed to laugh every now and then because he is hilarious! (And I said the word "interesting" about a gazillion times--Why? Why did I keep saying the same word over and over again as if I was malfunctioning?) Anyway, George taught me a lot about persevering despite the fact that he (like many of us) gets sick of his own voice. He shared an anecdote about working with C. Michael Curtis of "The Atlantic Monthly" that shocked and delighted me. We laughed about that too. Please read his story, "I'm Down Here on the Floor," before you listen to the podcast on Apple, Spotify, Audible, or wherever you get your podcasts. My apologies to StorySouth. I forgot to mention where the story was published during the podcast, but this is actually the second story in a row from StorySouth. Check out Jason Ockert's story "The Peoplemachines" from the September 1st episode as well. Also, here's a link to The Atlantic Monthly story George mentioned called "Show and Tell." I think the paywall might be down now (?), but I subscribe to that magazine, so someone needs to let me know. *Warning: There is some profanity on this episode, folks. See you next month when I'll be talking to Bonnie Jo Campbell about her story, "Boar Taint," from The Kenyon Review. Cheers, Kelly Bio: George Singleton has published eight collections of stories, two novels, and a book of writing advice. Over 200 of his stories have appeared in magazines such as the Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, Playboy, the Georgia Review, the Southern Review, the Cincinnati Review, and elsewhere. He is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a Guggenheim fellowship, the Hillsdale Award from the Fellowship of Southern Writers, and the Corrington Award for Literary Excellence. He lives in Spartanburg, SC, where he holds the John C. Cobb Chair in Humanities at Wofford College. Please find his books on Bookshop or Amazon. Chad B. Anderson's story "The Kelley Street Disappearances" has been lodged in my brain for almost a decade, so I decided to track him down, and I was so grateful when he agreed to be on the podcast. I'm sure if you are an avid reader like me, you know how rare it is to have a story resonate for that long. I hope you feel the same way I do about this one! Thanks also to LDAS-featured writer, Robin Martin, for sending me the story many years ago. For the first time with this podcast, in the interest of fostering our community of writers, I sent the story to all of my previous guests. LDAS-featured writers, Desiree Cooper and Renee Simms weighed in with a couple of really compelling questions for Chad. You can check out my interviews. with Desiree and Renee here as well. Also, I'm grateful to Renee for mentioning the story, Recitatif by Toni Morrison, which I had not read, and the stunning New Yorker essay about the story by Zadie Smith. Salamander Magazine has kindly removed the paywall for "The Kelley Street Disappearances." Please find it here. Thanks so much to the managing editor, Katie Sticca, for helping us keep this podcast accessible. **Salamander runs a fiction contest every year that runs from May 1 - June 1, with results announced by early September. Anyone interested can find more information on the website salamandermag.org. Please check out the Let's Deconstruct a Story podcast on Spotify, Apple, Audible, or wherever you get your podcasts after you read the story, and if you have a chance to rate the show, I would really appreciate it. See you on October 1st, when we'll be talking about "I'm Down Here on the Floor" in StorySouth by George Singleton. Thanks to Dan Wickett of Dzanc Books for suggesting George's work. On November 1st, Bonnie Jo Campbell visits to talk about her short story, "Boar Taint" in The Kenyon Review. Chad has just finished editing this wonderful anthology. Check it out here. Bio: Chad B. Anderson has published fiction in Salamander Review, Black Warrior Review, Nimrod International Journal, The Best American Short Stories 2017, Clockhouse, and Burrow Press Review, and he has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. He has had residencies at the Ledig House International Writers' Colony, the Jack Kerouac House in Orlando, Florida, and the Carolyn Moore Writers House in Portland, Oregon. He has served as an acting managing editor for Callaloo: Journal of African Diaspora Arts and Letters and a guest editor for Burrow Press Review and is currently an associate fiction editor for Orison Books. He edited and penned the introduction for an anthology of art, poetry, and prose titled What's Mine of Wilderness?, published by Burrow Press in 2023. Born and raised in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, he earned his B.A. in American Studies and English from University of Virginia and his M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Indiana University, where he served as fiction editor for Indiana Review. Y'all, we got a wide-ranging and exciting conversation on this episode with none other than Marc Martel, a fellow French-speaking Canadian with a “c” where the “k” so often goes.  Marc spent a long time as the co-frontman for the band Downhere, and now he travels the world wowing audiences with the Ultimate Queen Celebration.  He's got at least one video on YouTube with like 50 million hits… oh, and when it comes to Christmas music, dude's recorded and toured with juggernauts like Amy Grant & Michael W Smith, so… he's (as you'll hear in this conversation) handily “world class”.  That said, we're also friends who haven't chatted in a while, so we get caught up and talk about the church, the world, and whether or not live music can/should be categorized as “essential service”.  Hope you enjoy! Interview with Paul David Power, the astonishing playwright behind 'Crippled' and contributor to 'Land of Many Shores,' both published through Breakwater Books!Paul David Power is a Canadian actor, playwright and theatre director from Newfoundland and Labrador, whose play Crippled was a nominee for the Governor General's Award for English-language drama at the 2021 Governor General's Awards.Crippled, about a gay disabled man coping with grief following the death of his partner, was based in part on his own experiences following the death of his partner, Jonathan, in 2013. Power himself has a disability which requires him to use leg braces and crutches to walk. The play was first produced for the stage in 2018, with Power performing the lead role himself, and was published by Breakwater Books in 2021. A planned production in San Francisco in 2019 was halted under complicated American rules which require foreign theatre artists to have their work bureaucratically judged as "culturally unique" before they can be granted a work permit. In 2022, the play was mounted at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, with Power playing the lead role.Power is the artistic director of his own theatre company, Power Productions, which specializes in stage plays about disability. His other plays have included Roomies, Last Chance, The View from Down Here and In Your Eyes.Originally broadcast on September 20, 2021 on CHMR 93.5 FM in St. John's, and on other great stations across the country.  I sat down with my friend Elizabeth Chan who is a professional touring/session drummer and road manager. She has played for some of the biggest names in country and Christian music including: Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Lauren Daigle and Moriah Peters. On this weeks episode we spend time talking about how Elizabeth found her way to Nashville and the immediate doors that opened which allowed her to quickly work her way into position as an in-demand drummer and tour manager on the road.Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com.Talking Points:*I sent a bunch of emails to different management companies I had contacts with from years ago. One manager actually needed a drummer for an artist. He said most emails get deleted automatically, but he felt like he should open the email.*It was God’s grace that pulled all of that together.*First artist to play for was CCM artist Moriah Peters at Disney World.*The show at Disney had industry people there that I connected with.*Blaine Barcus was Moriah’s A&R person and we connected and built a relationship and I got to know him and his wife. I wanted to learn more about his story, not for business.*Be willing to be curious about people’s lives and know them for who they are, not what they do.*That can lead to other opportunities because you add value to the person.*Building relationships is key.*There are amazing musicians everywhere, but the one thing that makes us all different is the character you bring to the gig.*You spend most of your time with people on the road more than on the stage.*Keep yourself healthy.*If you’re not easy to work with or be around, no one wants to be with you.*Likability is more important than talent.*Create an outlet for working with something you believe in.*Don’t sign up for something you don’t believe in.*Don’t create a life where you only go 50%.*How did you get gigs after playing for Mariah Peters?  A person connected to an artist I was playing for would see me play and reach out and it would lead from one thing to another.*A lot of times you get called for one show but then it leads to more work with that artist.*How did you land a gig with Carrie Underwood on the CMA awards? I was filling in playing at a church along with a keys player who ended up playing for Carrie Underwood. 3 or 4 years later Carrie’s music director called me with a reference from Carrie’s keyboard player to play the CMA awards.*Don’t fake it. Just show up as your authentic self.*When I have time off, I fill up my time just listening to the music genre I am working in to be more familiar with it.*Be very intentional at breaking a part grooves to learn how different genres work. Elizabeth Chan is a touring and session drummer from New York City, currently based in Nashville, TN. She has worked with a variety of artists, including seven-time GRAMMY Award winner Carrie Underwood, country music legend Darius Rucker (of Hootie and The Blowfish), multi-platinum artist Keith Urban, powerhouse country trio Lady Antebellum, The Voice Australia finalist Ben Hazlewood, Billboard AC/CHR chart topper Hollyn, and 2014 GMA Dove Award “New Artist of the Year” Ellie Holcomb. Whether playing to anthemic rock and country melodies or accompanying folk and pop ballads, one this is consistently evident: There is never a lack of passion in what Elizabeth does.Music has long been a part of Elizabeth Chan’s life. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Elizabeth became highly involved in the rich local music scene of New York City. Under the direction of drum teachers Paul Two and Phil Bloom, Elizabeth began diving into genres from rock to R&B, jazz to hip hop, and gospel to latin.By the age of 17, Elizabeth was offered a full-tuition music scholarship to attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and travel as a drummer with their touring music teams. By the end of her college career, Elizabeth had graduated summa cum laude, played more than 270 shows across the United States, participated in 7 tours, garnered multiple endorsements and worked with a number of notable artists and songwriters.Elizabeth now resides in Nashville, TN. where she serves as a touring/session musician and tour manager for numerous pop, country and CCM acts.Artists Elizabeth has worked with: Carrie Underwood, Darius Rucker, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Eric Church, Hollyn, Lauren Daigle, Mandisa, Rachel Wammack, Sara Groves, Ellie Holcomb, Christy Nockels, Love & The Outcome, Ben Hazlewood, Sandra McCracken, JJ Heller, Jonathan Thulin, Moriah Peters, Lindsay McCaul, Charles Billingsley (of NewSong), Elias Dummer (of The City Harmonic), Jason Germain (of Downhere), Hannah Kerr.

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

I have been keeping Jesus small. I have found myself saying things like, "He started as a baby." Fortunately for me, I allowed Scripture to reshape my thinking this week. Inspired by downhere's song, "How Many Kings," I considered what sort of king Jesus is to emphasize the tremendous sacrifice it was for Him to come to earth as a human (much less a baby). But He did NOT "start" as a baby. Join me in Colossians 1 to put the magnifying glass on just a handful of characteristics of King Jesus. On this episode I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Make a list Repetition Considering a familiar story from a new perspective Jesus was an "unlikely hero"...or was He? Jesus is anything but small - Colossians 1:15-20 Everything in our list was true of the baby lying in a manger Jesus was God Jesus holds the highest rank Jesus created His kingdom Before there was anything...King Jesus was Jesus is not an uninterested, disconnected King Jesus surpasses all others...He is illustrious, renowned, celebrated, and supreme So what is our response? Bring gifts that acknowledge WHO He is - Matthew 2:1-11     Additional Resources Purchase the album or single on Amazon Lyrics and chords Story behind the song "How Many Kings" by downhere - New Release Today Article This Week's Challenge I hope you've been reading the Christmas story over and over this season. If you haven't pulled it out lately, read it again and consider all that Jesus was (even as a baby). Consider this Mighty King that came to earth for you and me. Read Colossians 1:15-20 again and make your own list as a review. Did you catch the BITE of repetition along with the BITE of making a list? Let the truth of God's Word sink in.

"How many kings stepped down from their thrones? How many lords have abandoned their homes?" so goes the song made famous by Down Here. A beautiful story-God became a man. We have heard it all before. Or have we? Just how old was Jesus when He and His mother Mary went to the Temple for dedication? And after Jesus' dedication, where did they go? How old was Jesus when the Magi visited Herod and asked him, "where is he who is born king of the Jews?" Join the Grace United crew as we hear the Christmas story again--for the first time.

Follow the star to a place unexpected Would you believe after all we've projected A child in a manger Lowly and small the weakest of all Unlikeliest hero wrapped in His mother's shawl Just a child, is this who we've waited for 'cause How many kings stepped down from their thrones How many lords have abandoned their homes How many greats have become the least for me And how many gods have poured out their hearts To romance a world that is torn all apart How many fathers gave up their sons for me Bringing out gifts for the newborn Savior All that we have whether costly or meek Because we believe Gold for His honor and frankincense for His pleasure And myrrh for the cross He'll suffer Do you believe, is this who we've waited for Only one did that for me ooh All for me ah ah ah All for me all for you (4X) How many kings stepped down from their thrones How many lords have abandoned their homes How many greats have become the least How many gods have poured out their hearts To romance a world that is torn all apart How many fathers gave up their sons for me Only one did that for me oh All for me all for you
