African National Congress (ANC) policies are out of step with the majority - between 65 and 79% - of its remaining self-identified supporters. That is the finding of recent polling by the South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR). In this interview with BizNews, Hermann Pretorius who wrote the report says: “…the most hard-hitting finding is that on all of these policies investigated in this report, from merit-based appointments, procurement spending, the Expropriation Act, government focus on jobs and choice-based empowerment programs, the ANC is currently at odds with its own voters by at least a two-thirds majority of its own base.” He warns that unless the ANC acts “rapidly” to bring the party back in touch with its own supporters, it might fall “even lower than the 29.7%, which we are polling them at at the moment”. Pretorius outlines what former President Jacob Zuma's MKP - that supports property rights and merit-based appointments - would have to do to “take another few chunks out of ANC support by going where the ANC supporters actually want the ANC to go”. Meanwhile, he warns that the Democratic Alliance (DA) should not to allow opposing messages to come from the DA in government and the DA in the political party. “I sat next to Minister (Dean) MacPherson on the panel at NAMPO when he took this rather bizarre position of defending the Expropriation Act and undermining his own party's position, trotting out ANC talking point after ANC talking point. It was quite astonishing to hear a minister either lie about a piece of legislation he's responsible for or not understanding it.”

In the latest episode of the Weekly Wrap podcast, Farmer's Weekly editor Denene Erasmus discusses more of the features from the 3 & 10 July double issue of Farmer's Weekly, which will be in stores from 26 June to 10 July. In one of the main features in this issue, Farmer's Weekly spoke to some farmers about how they cope with uncertainty in their businesses, and what advice they may have for those who work in other sectors who might now, because of the coronavirus disease pandemic and the lockdown, may be facing more uncertainty about the future than they are used to dealing with in their work and daily life. In this issue's guest editorial Dr Sifiso Ntombela, chief economist at the National Agricultural Marketing Council, writes that while previous growth and development initiatives focused mostly in growing the commercial farming sector, a ‘new school of thought' advocates for the co-existence of smallholder and commercial farmers to achieve household-level food security in South Africa. The 3 and 10 July issue also profiles a young, self-taught worm farmer from Hammanskraal near Pretoria. Thato Lekonyane uses red wriggler earthworms in his worm farm to convert waste, such as kitchen scraps and manure, into compost. In die volgende uur... Die minister van gesondheid sê Gauteng gaan binnekort die episentrum van Covid-19 gevalle wees. Ekonomiese groei het in die eerste kwartaal van 2020 gekrimp en Nampo oesdag sal vir die eerste keer virtueel aangebied word.

Die gesegde "'n boer maak 'n plan" het gestalte gekry by die boere planne kompetisie by die Nampo oesfees. Omdat baie boere ver van hardeware- en ander winkels af woon, moet hulle self planne beraam om hulle lewens te vergemaklik. Twee 12 jarige seuns het op 6 Januarie 2018 in die oë van Suid-Afrikaners in helde verander nadat hulle mense uit 'n brandende trein wrak gered het. Amerikaanse boere het nie soveel onsekerheid waarmee hulle daagliks moet rekening hou soos byvoorbeeld die Suid-Afrikaanse boer nie. Theo Voster ekonoom van Galileo Capital is tans in Illinois in die VSA saam met 'n groep boere en Monsanto om die Amerikaanse weergawe van Nampo by te woon. Voster sê dit is duidelik dat Suid-Afrika in die landbou sektor maar nog 'n klein rolspeler is.

Die Nampo-Oesdagfees 2017 kom vandag tot 'n einde op Bothaville. Suzanne Paxton praat met Jannie de Villier van Graan SA hoe die landbouskou verloop het. En Justin Kennerley praat met 'n jong boer van Botswana oor sy eerste Nampo-ervaring.
