I recently sat down with New York Nico, also known as Nicolas Heller, who's become a cultural icon for capturing the soul of New York City. His new book, New York Nico's Guide to NYC, goes beyond the typical tourist spots. It's a heartfelt dedication to the people and small businesses that bring New York to life. This particular episode is extremely special because it's by Vinny Alfano, a session guitarist, composer and mix engineer where he created an audible experience entitled, the New York Said EP. I asked him if it was cool to publish the EP on NYS and he said, "Hell yeah!” And here we are. Enjoy, Amon Show Notes: https://www.newyorksaid.com/episode-number-200-the-new-york-said-ep

What’s up good people welcome to the New York Said podcast, I’m your host Amon Focus. This week I headed to Metropolitan High School out in the Bronx to talk to some of the kids in the Beacon Youth Program. I was asked to talk about Podcasting. I kept it simple, I showed them the audio equipment but I said the best way to learn about podcasting is to record one… So we did. If you’re a long time listener to the show then you’re familiar with the card game I created called New York Said Shuffle, if not then it’s simple. New York Said Shuffle is a game where I have the guest shuffle a deck of question cards that I created and then they answered them. In this episode I played a lightning round with the students. I asked each person in the group one question each and then they flipped the tables then interviewed. This is a light fun episode which I really enjoy. Shout to Leo of SOA Life for making this episode possible. I’m out of here, enjoy! Show Notes: Show Notes: https://www.newyorksaid.com/chopped-cheese/
Put out the word Blahzay has emerged to give New York Said an hour of his time. We appreciate that. In this episode we talk about his early days in hip-hip, eating right, dream hunters, the G.O.B. project with Al Skratch and going inward. Show Notes: https://www.newyorksaid.com/blahzay-blahzay/
Today’s episode is very, very special to me. Today’s guest on the show is Phade of the Mighty Shirt Kings. If you’ve a been a long time listener, then you’ve heard me speak about Phade and the Shirt Kings about a dozen or so times in previous episodes. Before I even knew I was a creative or before I was into art like that, I was into the the work of Phade. If you’re not familiar with Phade or the Shirt Kings, you are, you just don’t know you are. Whenever you see any airbrushed Disney or popular cartoon character drenched in hip hop culture on a shirt, you’re seeing the influence of Phade and the Mighty Mighty Shirt Kings. If you’ve ever seen LL Cool J, Biz Markie, Bell Biv Devoe, Pusha T or anyone from the ASAP Mob rocking airbrushed anything, I’m certain it was done by Phade or one of the many members of the Shirt Kings crew. Phade and I recorded this in Harlem, right there in Marcus Garvey park. There will be birds chirping, cars honking and probably some sirens but that’s New York Said. I’m out of here, enjoy! Show Notes: https://www.newyorksaid.com/shirt-king-phade/
We made it, we made it to "Episode One Hundred" of the New York Said podcast. If you think that is something to sneeze at then my best advice is for you try it. It's not easy but it is very fulfilling. Today's guest on the show is Shantell Martin. How cool is that? Very. We had the opportunity to stop by Shantell's studio at Mana Contemporary to talk about working with Puma, Kendrick Lamar, Tiffany & Co., living in Japan, making her way to New York, starting over, collaborations, finding the signature in her work, style, perseverance, and being nice. Sir Spaz B and I bumped heads in Midtown over a CD offer. I declined, we talked for a few and it only made sense to invite him on the show. He tried to do the show on another day but I declined the offer and applied the pressure. Spaz buckled and graced New York Said with his time, energy, philosophy, wisdom and bunch of great stories. In this episode we talk about hustle, vision, stealing a car, him being a rebel, food vendors, robberies and his music. // Show Notes: https://www.newyorksaid.com/spaz/
Twenty-Seventeen is clearly a wrap, good people, so I met up with Juan Sanchez to do a Year-End Review. Recorded on the steps that head toward Tudor City. Juan and I talk about the the loss of Combat Jack also known as Reggie Joseph Ossé, what we’ve learned over the past year, favorite New York Said episodes, we geek out over cigars, talk new podcasts, docs and music. // Show Notes: https://www.newyorksaid.com/year-in-review/

This episode is very special to me. It’s not often I get to converse with a innovator, a pioneer or a living legend in anything let alone graffiti culture. Today’s guest on the show is TAKI 183. Before recording a single episode of this podcast I made list of people I would love to have on the show. I threw Taki’s name on there under the dream big column. I wrote it not ever thinking it was a real possibility but here we are lol. That write it down and manifest it stuff I’ve always heard about does have a lot of merit to it, so I’m learning. TAKI 183 was gracious enough to give me a few hours of his time to talk in-depth about his creative journey at the Auto Body Shop he owns out Yonkers. That being said, it was toward the end of the work day so we had to stop and start depending on if someone in the garage or a client needed to pull him away for a second. I put a sound effect in between clips to give you an idea of when I had to stop the tape. This episode was recorded in the waiting area of the garage… So just like when I’m deep in the city, it has it’s own sounds; like refrigerator humming, beeps, doors slamming, car lifts, wheels getting changed, sirens and of course, a healthy amount of welcomed disturbances from folks in the neighborhood. I could totally edit this stuff out but to me, its all apart of the New York Said audio experience. Enough with the intro, please enjoy. Happy New Year good people, welcome to the New York Said podcast. It’s a very rainy Tuesday in the Lower East Side but I’m feeling it. I love the sunshine because I appreciate the rain. This episode is a little different. A few days ago I invited Juan back on the show to talk about his favorite podcast, music and books but we ended up talking about that and everything under the sun. What you’re about to hear is take two. In the first take we started off great and then somehow we ended up in the super dark political place. It didn’t even make sense to publish it, I just made a new clip as we were talking and started from there. Please enjoy. Amon Focus, in another iteration of New York Said, had the opportunity to speak with TMNK at the 2013 SCOPE event and he happened upon a very inspiring man whose message was this “Inside everybody anybody and especially you is a gift that God put that there is something that you can do that no one else can do there is a contribution that you can make to this world but you got to believe in yourself and you got to work at it every day, relentlessly. It will be difficult. But I want people to see if a nobody like me can come to the streets of New York and several years later, not ten years later within 5 years has his work exhibited around the world and to be up here in SCOPE that anybody can, anybody can make a difference, everybody can make a difference.” –TMNK The contemporary artist’s message is truly inspiring and uplifting, he used his art and his voice to encourage those around him to master their gifts and honor the ideas of being your brothers & sisters keepers. He would not allow himself to be defined by the ignorance of others and left a legacy that stained the mind and soul of those who were lucky enough to experience his art and his message that art is a weapon. There were 3 jewels in all of his work dedicated to his 3 children. This interview is dedicated to them and his family so that they may hear and honor the legacy that was built for them by this incredible man. May he rest in power.
