When Purple Rain came out, I was approaching my eleventh birthday. I wasn't allowed to go see it but I did have the album. I also saw the videos, though I'm not sure how, as I don't think we had a TV yet. Forty years have somehow gone by since I didn't see Purple Rain so I went to an anniversary screening in Brooklyn Bridge Park. I found myself both moved and troubled by the experience. The crowd was amazing. From the opening number of the film, almost everyone was up on their feet, ready to go crazy. About half the crowd could not resist doing “The Bird” even as they remained seated on their blankets. Lighters and cell phones were raised during “Purple Rain.” And when Prince hit Apollonia in the face so hard she spun and fell into a dresser, the crowd made an audible sound of disapproval. The violence was what I was not prepared for. Having spent my youth in a kind of complicated double bind of being both a feminist and a fan of Prince's music, I was familiar with the confusion of all the objectifying images of women, coupled with sex positive grooves.  To keep reading I Finally Saw Purple Rain, visit the Songs for the Struggling Artist blog. To the landscape designer Edwina von Gal, gardening is much more than just seeding, planting, weeding, and watering; it's her life calling. Since starting her namesake firm in 1984 in East Hampton, on New York's Long Island, she has worked with, for, and/or alongside the likes of Calvin Klein, Larry Gagosian, Frank Gehry, Maya Lin, Annabelle Selldorf, Richard Serra, and Cindy Sherman, creating gardens that center on native species and engage in other nature-based land-care solutions. In 2008, von Gal founded the Azuero Earth Project in Panama to promote chemical-free reforestation with native trees on the Azuero Peninsula. Stemming out of this initiative, in 2013, she then founded the Perfect Earth Project to promote chemical-free, non-agricultural land management in the U.S. Her most recent effort, Two Thirds for the Birds, is a call-to-action to plant more native plants and eliminate pesticides, thus creating a greater food supply for birds. On the episode, she discusses the meditative qualities of gardening; reframing landscaping as “land care”; and why she sees herself not as a steward of land, but rather as a collaborator with it.Special thanks to our Season 9 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Edwina von Gal[15:32] William Cronon[15:32] Changes in the Land[15:32] Tiokasin Ghosthorse[24:04] Carl Sagan[24:04] The Demon-Haunted World[26:07] Perfect Earth Project[40:37] Two Thirds for the Birds[42:41] John Fitzpatrick[42:41] Cornell Lab of Ornithology[42:41] Merlin Bird ID[47:01] Garden Club of America[50:21] Diana Vreeland[51:09] Peter Sharp[51:09] Channel Gardens at Rockefeller Center[54:46] Frank Gehry[54:46] Biomuseo[54:46] Bruce Mau[56:32] Azuero Earth Project[1:00:37] Doug Tallamy[1:02:01] Nature's Best Hope[1:05:12] The High Line[1:05:12] Brooklyn Bridge Park[1:05:12] The Battery Conservancy[1:05:12] Brooklyn Museum

https://amateurtraveler.com/travel-to-new-york-city/ Hear about travel to New York City as the Amateur Traveler talks to Rebecca Shoval from Not Just Tourists NYC about her adopted home in the city that never sleeps. Why should you go to New York City?  Rebecca says, "I think someone should come to New York for so many reasons. I think it's this incredibly vibrant place. It exudes life and I find walking around the city, it really just gives you energy. It's also this vibrant multicultural place where you can really see the way that there's so much commitment to the city and to the culture and to people really living in something resembling harmony next to each other... or at least ignoring each other and not getting in each other's business. There are so many different things to do." Rebecca says that the city has changed since COVID-19. She highlights how the city has recovered and transformed from the pandemic's impacts, offering a unique perspective on what makes New York a vibrant and dynamic place. Rebecca recommends exploring different boroughs and neighborhoods within New York City. The city's diversity is reflected in its various neighborhoods, each with its own cultural influences and attractions. She particularly recommends Queens, known for its ethnic neighborhoods like Jackson Heights and Flushing, offering immersive food tours and unique experiences. Public transportation is an essential part of the New York experience. Rebecca emphasizes the convenience of using apps like MyMTA, MTA Bus Time, and Train Time to navigate the city's extensive subway, bus, and train systems. The ease of using Apple Pay or Samsung Pay to access public transit now makes travel efficient and hassle-free.  The Staten Island Ferry offers stunning views of the Statue of Liberty, Southern Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey. It's a free ferry that provides a unique and picturesque perspective of iconic landmarks. Rebecca suggests taking this ferry to get a feel for the city's beauty from the water. The Tenement Museum provides insights into New York's immigrant history, showcasing how various ethnic communities lived and worked. She would recommend that museum or the New York Historical Society instead of a trip to the World Trade Center Memorial for those interested in history. Walking across iconic bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge provides breathtaking city views. Additionally, taking city ferries offers an alternative way to see New York's skyline from the water.  Rebecca recommends seeing New York from above but suggests skipping touristy skyscrapers like the Empire State Building and opting for bars or restaurants with panoramic views. The Graduate Hotel's rooftop bar on Roosevelt Island is recommended for its exceptional view of Manhattan and surrounding areas. You have to check out the entertainment scene in New York. Broadway is amazing for its incredible talent and performances, while jazz enthusiasts are advised to explore smaller venues like Arthur's Tavern, Cellar Dog, and Somewhere Nowhere for a more interactive experience. Try visiting parks like Brooklyn Bridge Park, Prospect Park, and Domino's Sugar Factory, which offer unique recreational spaces and city views.  For ionic New York food, you have to consider getting bagels and pizza. Joe's Pizza and Tompkins Square Bagels are Rebecca's favorites. Try street food, especially halal carts which are much more prevalent than hot dog stands in New York these days. Try some cuisine you can't get at home like Caribbean food, regional Chinese, or Burmese cuisine. Eat something at a bodega. Rebecca's favorite restaurants include the experimental restaurant Fulgrances in Brooklyn which is notable for its rotating chefs and wine selection. Another favorite is Little Myanmar in the East Village, which serves Burmese food. She recommends the pasta at Nona Dora's (even the Gluten-free). Reservations are advised due to ongoing restaurant challenges post-pandemic. Use the Rezy app. Wear comfortable shoes, carry a reusable water bottle, and bring a sense of adventure as you explore one of the world's greatest cities, New York City.

Jimmy Soni is an award-winning author. His latest book, THE FOUNDERS: The Story of PayPal and the Entrepreneurs Who Shaped Silicon Valley, was a debut best-seller and has earned praise from the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Economist, among many others. Described as “an intensely magnetic chronicle” (The New York Times) and “engrossing” (Business Insider), Soni conducted hundreds of interviews, including exclusive sit-downs with Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, and many others. The book explores PayPal's turbulent early days and the shaping of a generation of technological talent. “Deeply reported and bracingly written, this book is an indispensable guide to modern innovation and entrepreneurship,” noted Walter Isaacson, New York Times bestselling author of The Code Breaker. Soni's previous book, A MIND AT PLAY How Claude Shannon Invented the Information Age, won the 2017 Neumann Prize, awarded by the British Society for the History of Mathematics for the best book on the history of mathematics for a general audience, and the Middleton Prize by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The book explored the life and times of Dr. Claude Shannon, founder of the field of information theory and one of the 20th century's forgotten geniuses. Fortune magazine called the book a “charming account of one of the twentieth century's most distinguished scientists…Readers will enjoy this portrait of a modern-day Da Vinci.” A prior work, ROME'S LAST CITIZEN: the Life and Legacy of Cato, shared the story of the ancient Roman Senator Cato the Younger, archrival of Julius Caesar. Soni is also a co-author of Jane's Carousel, completed with the late Jane Walentas, which captured one woman's remarkable twenty-five-year journey to restore a beloved carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Soni started his career at McKinsey & Company, and he lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his daughter, Venice. The Hammer Museum is presenting "Hammer Projects: Kiyan Williams", the artist's first solo museum presentation, through August 28. The show features Williams' 2022 installation Between Starshine and Clay, a work that features earth taken from sites that are familial or that hold Black American histories, and sculptural forms that reveal or refer to the human body. "Williams" was curated by Erin Christovale. Williams is also included in "Black Atlantic," a Public Art Fund exhibition at Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York. The exhibition, which was curated by Hugh Hayden and Daniel S. Palmer, was motivated by an exploration of transatlantic diaspora. It includes Williams' 2022 Ruins of Empire, a reimagining of Thomas Crawford's Statue of Freedom, which was installed atop the US Capitol dome in 1863. (The full-size plaster model for Freedom is in the Capitol Visitor Center.) "Black Atlantic" is on view through November 27. In addition, they are also in "52 Artists: A Feminist Milestone" at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Conn. The exhibition, which was curated by Amy Smith-Stewart and is on view through January 8, 2023, showcases work by artists in the Aldrich's 1971 "Twenty Six Contemporary Women Artists" show, augmented by work by 26 female identifying or nonbinary emerging artists. On the second segment, a re-air of an October 2021 conversation with Monument Lab director Paul M. Rebecca McMackin, director of horticulture for Brooklyn Bridge Park and Pawel Pieluszynski, Brooklyn Bridge Park's wetland gardener, share how they make Brooklyn Bridge Park attractive to wildlife, like the fireflies now appearing at dusk on the Bridgeview Lawn.   You could call a group of fireflies an "illumination" — Bill Bruno🇺🇦 (@Bailyn_DeTVille) July 8, 2022 @BrianLehrer I just went to the firefly sanctuary in New Canaan, Ct. It was spectacular! — Donna Weinstock (@DonnaW5) July 8, 2022 Insect life cycles are often based on temperature, so in warm years, emergence can happen earlier. But right around early July is pretty normal for us. You can actually use this amazing app (iNaturalist) to go observe observations and get a sense of their emergence timing. — Rebecca McMackin (@McmackinRebecca) July 8, 2022 Different species of firefly will display at different times of the evening. But sometimes it can take ages for males to pick which female to mate with. They have to, because some female fireflies (of different species) will trick and then eat them! — Rebecca McMackin (@McmackinRebecca) July 8, 2022 It can be difficult, since both groups love moist environments. But while mosquitoes need (even tiny patches of) open water to breed, fireflies just need wet ground and leaves. So it is possible to have wet areas with no open water but keep an eye on open water is important. — Rebecca McMackin (@McmackinRebecca) July 8, 2022 The fireflies are the same size as individuals (as much as I would LOVE giant beetles in our park) but populations may be larger due to environmental factors like the wet spring we had. — Rebecca McMackin (@McmackinRebecca) July 8, 2022 THE BEST! — Rebecca McMackin (@McmackinRebecca) July 8, 2022

Instead of "Acknowledgements" to end his book, Jimmy titled the section "Debts" "A debt is deeper than an Acknowledgement." Envy the optimist, not the genius. There's real power in optimism. The world is built by optimists. Look for the silver things. Have belief. Be the type of person that believes in themselves and others… Optimism builds confidence in yourself and others. There are benefits to spending some time by yourself. Ask – The people who make things happen are willing to ASK. Steve Jobs to Bill Hewlitt. Elon Musk to Dr. Peter Nicholson. He is also the Creative Director of Clout Public Affairs, and has previously worked for the New York Observer, Washington Examiner, and The Huffington Post. At their core, Jimmy's books are passion projects. Jimmy chooses topics because he wants to read about them but can't find a book to buy on the subject. He is inspired by his literary heroes, including Robert Caro, Laura Hillenbrand, Candice Millard, Daniel James Brown, and Barbara Tuchman. Like these acclaimed authors, Jimmy combines rigorous research with readability - he doesn't want his books to feel like doing homework. He enjoys obsessing over a subject for years and aims to find as much information as possible, and then make the material readable for a general audience. jimmysoni.com.
