Global Health Advisor Dr. Sam Shah is back on the Old Fox Young Fox podcast, this time focusing on medical innovation in the NHS and globally. We talk Covid-19 vaccines, what we've learned about the virus so far, how the healthcare system has responded to the increased load and what it is like to work on the frontline, in a medical clinic, day to day. This is a far-ranging conversation and we cover a lot of interesting ground, including the role of data in current and future healthcare, the public-private partnership and how we all have a role to play in staying healthy. Then we take a global view and look to China, India, New Zealand, the USA, the UK and beyond for examples of medical innovation and both the benefits and risks that such a rapidly evolving world brings with it. In this latest episode of the Agilisys podcast, we welcome Catherine Pollard, Director of the National Centre of Expertise at NHSX and Paul Malcolm, Head of Healthcare at Agilisys, to discuss why the UK needs a digitally enhanced care sector, if it is to thrive. In this podcast we also discuss the roadmap that will help us tap into the potential of technology and importantly, what this means when it comes to skills. Questions discussed in this episode include: Why do we need a digitally enhanced care sector? What technologies will really drive digital transformation? How will they improve the situation? What's holding back technology adoption? With that in mind, what does the roadmap/journey entail if we are to achieve a digitally enhanced care sector? What role will NHSX play in this? As a result of all that's going on, do you expect to see the care sector becoming much more of a single system/service? How does the care sector attract staff with the right skills – or is it more a case of focusing on training and skills development?

This episode of Old Fox Young Fox features Dr. Sam Shah, a Global Digital Health Advisor and former Director of NHSX. We summarise what we know about Covid-19 so far and take a long, hard look at good, the bad and the ugly of the state of healthcare in the UK and globally. As we enter into a second northern hemisphere winter living with Covid-19 and all the concerns that brings, what have we learned about the virus and how to prevent it? Is our public healthcare service up to the task and are our Government helping or hindering the delivery of healthcare to those who need it most? Dr. Shah is outspoken, incredibly knowledgable and is passionate about the need for equal access to healthcare as a basic human right. He raises serious questions about the state of our Government and the former Management Consultants now lining the upper echelons of many public service departments. This is an episode not to be missed and one that echoes the experiences of many countries during this pandemic and during this current experiment in Populism in many nations.

Sam Shah is our guest in this week's episode. He's on the panel at the conference in October. Dr Shah is a Global Clinical and Digital Adviser, NHS Clinician, former Director of Digital Development for NHSX, and the Financial Times 4th most influential UK BAME tech leader 2019.Sam talks about one of the public health projects he worked on that's still very close to his heart, Healthy Places, Heavy Lives, which aimed to reduce health inequalities. He discusses the fact that health issues are complex, and why we don't always need more clinicians, instead we need a better way of tackling the wider social determinants.Sam shares his belief that people should always be at the heart of digital development, and discusses the balancing act in healthcare around the clinical, emotional, and practical needs of patients. We move on to discuss telehealth, its fast adoption during the pandemic, and the risk of omitting people who can't access these services and driving a new inequality.Sam also talks about the lack of diversity in leadership roles within the health service, why inclusivity means better outcomes for everyone, and shares his ideas on how the public health sector can be made more diverse and representative of our wider society. We loved talking to Sam and we hope you enjoy the episode. It calls for the UK Government to extend its Five Pillar Testing Strategy to a Six Pillar Testing and Tracing Strategy by introducing digital contact tracing as a Sixth Pillar. A Testing and Tracing Strategy should bring together expertise from the Department of Health, NHSX, NHS Digital, Police, Military and the Intelligence Agencies, to create a new independent national 24/7 Testing and Tracing Command Centre.

Digital Health Rewired has come and gone for another year, with some 1,800 people attending the event. A key theme at this year's Leadership Summit and Expo was diversity, inclusion and representation, and Digital Health Unplugged hosted its first, but certainly not last, all-women panel discussion. Joining host Andrea Downey to talk about all things Rewired, leadership and diversity were: Prof Julia Riley, clinical lead at Coordinate My Care and consultant in palliative medicine at the Royal Marsden NHS Trust Yinka Makinde, programme director DigitalHealth.London Mandy Griffin, CIO at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS FT Natasha Phillips, CNIO at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and newly announced CNIO for NHSX
This week's Digital Health Unplugged focuses on the biggest headlines at Digital Health News this month. Join us as Digital Health's editor, Hannah Crouch, editor-in-chief Jon Hoeksma and senior reporter Andrea Downey discuss the news Epic has reportedly told it's customers it will stop working with Google Cloud; the Department of Health and Social Care's new £140 artificial intelligence award; and the possibility of NHSX setting a minimum spend for technology.
NHSX cheif executive Matthew Gould joins Andrea Downey on this week's podcast to talk funding, technology, standards and provide an update on NHSX's core commitments. Gould gives us a look into how the newly announced £40m funding for improved login times will be allocated; what the Digital Aspirant programme will entail; and how organisations like NHSX will set out "what good looks like" through standards that will feed into how the Care Quality Commission (CQC) will begin to assess digital capabilities.
This week, James is joined by Neil Laycock, Managing Director of technology giant Servelec's healthcare division - one of the largest providers of healthcare systems in the UK. Typically this is its Rio electronic patient record (EPR), but it also extends to bed management solutions, designing interfaces for other healthcare systems and mobile solutions for clinicians - but by far at the top of the agenda for Servelec is interoperability. The ability for healthcare systems to be able to share data, information and be able to 'talk' to each other, is one of the primary concerns for NHSX, and will greatly improve patient care and experience, yet it still hasn't been widely adopted - data protection makes it extremely difficult. Servelec are working hard to tackle this and it has an interoperability platform, but there is still much work to do for them and for the sector as a whole, in order for easy sharing of patient data across more than one system. James and Neil talk about Neil's 15 years as a leader in technology, the origins of their Rio EPR, moving up in corporates, how startups can engage with big tech companies, plenty of insights about careers, scaling tech products in healthcare and as a CEO, how still being passionate about spending time with customers to find out how to solve their problems in the best way to keep a business on top. https://www.servelec.co.uk/ | https://www.linkedin.com/in/neillaycock/ For more information and content, check out our website www.hs.ventures.
