Have you heard the term SciArt before? In this episode, we explore what it is and the benefits of combining art and science as a research and communication tool. Our Co-host for this episode is Elli Wright, Public Engagement Manager at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Elli told us ‘...effective science communication can really connect people and communities with research. Science communicators and public engagement professionals want to reduce the elitism built into society with regards to who is allowed to access scientific knowledge. Science belongs to all of us which is why effective science communication is so important. There are many ways that science can be communicated to the diverse public audience, including through art.'Natasha Niethamer shared with us, ‘the more we engage others about public health concerns that require global efforts to fight, the more likely we are to inspire community action, driving interest in policy makers and funders. Directly inspiring even one teacher, parent, young person, or community member may indirectly inspire a large network of their own. You may inspire the next major activist of our generation!'Listen on to find out more about how a playful approach can bring new insights to your work. This episode features:Dr Elli Wright - Public Engagement Manager, Liverpool School of Tropical MedicineElli has been working in the science communication and public engagement sector at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine for nearly 8 years. When Moses Clayton's body was laid to rest on Saturday, 1st March 1919, it would close the book on one of Rossendale's most notorious villains. A character that had once terrorised an entire district with his brutality and drunken carefree attitude would no longer pose a threat to the townsfolk of Accrington, Bacup, Haslingden and Rawtenstall, as well as other places such as Whitworth and Todmorden. Born in 1857 to parents James and Susannah, Moses was just one of nine siblings, and he had spent much of his childhood and early teens living in and around Crawshawbooth, within an area known as Lower Booths. In 1871, from the census records, we can see he was living at number 25 Holmes Terrace along with his father James, four brothers and three sisters. His mother had sadly passed away in 1870 at the age of 44. Interestingly, one of the earliest accounts of Moses getting into any form of trouble appeared in 1870, the same year as his mother's death. The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser ran a small story detailing how a young lad, just 13 years old, had been arrested and charged by Inspector Hargreaves at the Salford Police Court under the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Moses had been found working a horse that was in an unfit condition. His employer, Mr. George Pullett, a coal dealer from Pendlebury, would eventually pay a fine of 40s. Whilst this was obviously a serious charge, it would be nothing compared to what was to come. Evidence has shown that continuity of care is associated with better health outcomes for patients, but how can doctors convince politicians and policymakers of the benefits of it? We also speak to Emma Gladwinfield, a GP in Rossendale, about how connecting with schools, churches and community centres is helping to build relationships with patients and deliver care in her local community. Domestic abuse or “wife beating” was a prominent occurrence in Victorian England with many victims having to put up with abuse on a daily basis. It was socially acceptable for that period and was seen by many as nothing more than a lower class issue. It's been written in many publications that during the Victorian era, religion played a big part in culture and that for a woman to be virtuous and to serve god, they must follow the lead of her husband. This of course seemingly gave the nod for husbands to control and do whatever they deemed appropriate to their wives, which, in many instances, meant physical violence. With that said, let's get into today's story and we are travelling way back to the early morning of Saturday, 19th August, 1899 and to the small town of Whitworth which resides between Bacup and Rochdale in the parish of Rossendale, England. Ellen Dowdle, a 35 year weaver and mother to five children had spent a couple of hours working at the Whitworth Co-Op Mill, covering for another worker who was off sick. She had agreed to work three days a week, taking on four looms in doing so and with the promise of more work to follow. By mid-morning, she was working alongside another mill employee when she spoke about being worried about going home, saying; “A fear there's bound to be trouble for me” to which the other employee replied; “Oh don't think that Mrs Dowdle; it'll be dinner time soon an' then the work'll be done.“ Finishing work at around noon, Ellen made her way to Grove Terrace where she had been living for the past week with Mr and Mrs O'Brien after having left her marital home at 20 Copeland Street the week before, following a huge row with her husband, Michael. She would stay there for much of the afternoon until around 3.00pm – when it was reported that after her husband called at the house, and after a short discussion between the pair, she was persuaded by Michael to return back home with him. This would be the last time the O'Brien's would ever see their friend, Ellen, alive ever again.

Many times we hear of serious crimes taking place in areas which are never close to home and we always think to ourselves it would never happen where you live, and yet crimes, and especially murders may well have happened closer than you realize – sometimes you just have to do a little digging. Haslingden is a small town that resides within the district of Rossendale. Surrounded by moorland, it is situated roughly 16 miles North of Manchester, with neighboring towns and villages such as Rawtenstall, Helmshore, Rising Bridge, Acre and Hud Hey all within close proximity. By the late 1800's, the population was around 19,000 with many residents working within the factories and mills that had prospered during Industrial Revolution due to the mechanization of the wool, cotton and spinning industries. And it is in this setting that we travel back to the 20th August 1880 and to the home of Mary and Dennis Molloy, mop maker, that was situated on Wilkinson Street, or as it was known then, New Club Houses – just off Marsden Square at the top of the town. As you can probably gather, the surname – Molloy – is of Irish origin and it was in this part of town that a large gathering of Irish families had settled, with one name in particular that some of you may have already heard of; Michael Davitt – the founder of the ‘Land League‘ back in 1879 which was responsible for liberating the Irish peasantry from the injustices of the land rental scheme; but this is a story for another time! It was close to around 2.00pm when James, aged 20 and the third eldest of nine children, arrived back at home eagerly looking forwards to having his lunch after spending much of the day transporting goods around town as a carter. Being of a somewhat poor neighborhood, the house was in a terrible state and witness accounts that spoke of Mary and Dennis seem to indicate they spent most of their time in a drunken stupor, with Dennis perhaps being the more guilty of the two when it came to worse-for-wear with drink. Not having much in the way of food, Mary went out to a local shop nearby to purchase some ham, eggs and coffee and when she arrived back home some short time later, James sat down at the kitchen table and tucked into the food she had brought back. Meanwhile, his father, Dennis Molloy, who had been sleeping upstairs, was awoken by the sound of his wife and James talking downstairs. Making his way down and into the kitchen, he ordered his son to leave the house saying; “he should have no dinner here.” Winifred Molloy, nine years of age who was in the house at the time had made her way into the kitchen by the time her mother came back and heard her father shouting at James.

THE RECENT report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) into antisemitism in the Labour Party delivered a damning verdict on Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership. In this special podcast, Marcus Stead talks to Graham Perry, a Labour supporter and an antisemitism awareness trainer about the findings of the EHRC’s report and the events that followed it, including Jeremy Corbyn’s statement which led to him having the Labour whip withdrawn. The EHRC found Labour breached the Equality Act in two cases when its agents were engaged in “committing unlawful harassment”, including using “antisemitic tropes and suggesting that complaints of antisemitism were fake or smears”. The first referred to former Ken Livingstone, the former Mayor of London, and the second concerned Pam Bromley, a Labour councillor in Rossendale, Lancashire. A further “18 more borderline harassment cases” were identified in the sample of 70 studied by the EHRC, and the watchdog also indicated relations with Labour were not always smooth during the investigation. The discussion then turns to the wider problem of antisemitism in British politics and in wider society. Plaid Cymru was co-founded by playwright Saunders Lewis, whose work and letters contain many examples of antisemitism. Lewis is still widely revered by the Welsh nationalist community, and the party was recently engulfed in controversy after activist Sahar Al-Faifi, who has a long track record of antisemitism, was readmitted to the party and will stand as a candidate in next year’s elections to the Welsh Parliament. Beyond politics, how prevalent is antisemitism in wider society? Marcus and Graham discuss the issue of antisemitism in institutions such as golf clubs. In this age where roads and concert venues named after slave traders are being renamed, is it right that prominent antisemites such as Roald Dahl are honoured with public monuments bearing their name? Roald Dahl Plass is less than a minute’s walk from the Welsh Parliament building. What is the difference between blatant antisemitism and subconscious antisemitism? And is antisemitism all too often regarded as ‘the lesser racism’? Graham Perry graduated from Churchill College Cambridge with degrees in History and Economics in 1968. He qualified as a Solicitor and became a Partner in Clinton-Davis & Co in Hackney, East London and focused on representing clients in the Magistrates Courts of North-East London. He made a career switch in 1979 when he joined the family firm, London Export Corporation, set up in 1953 by Jack Perry to focus on Trade with China. Graham made his final career change when he became an independent commercial arbitrator resolving disputes between companies involved in the trans-national shipment of food, feeding stuffs and oils – which work he continues to undertake. Graham was a Justice of the Peace from 1986 to 2002 and an Immigration Judge from 2002 to 2015. He has made 100+ visits to China on business, with political groups and most recently with former Lord Chief Justice Woolf whom Graham arranged to give Lectures in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on the Rule of Law. Graham writes and lectures on two main topics – China and Anti-Semitism and honed his presentational skills with LBC radio, where he was a regular overnight cover presenter in the 1990s, before focusing exclusively on his arbitration work. [Compassion at Work Toolkit](https://oscarkilo.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Compassion-at-Work-Toolkit-FINAL-5-December-2017.pdf) Fiona Meechan’s current role is Lecturer in Healthcare Leadership and Management at the Alliance Manchester Business School, where she delivers an MSc in Healthcare Leadership for people working in a wide range of senior clinical and non-clinical roles across the NHS. Previous roles include: Director of Customers and Communities at Rossendale Borough Council, where Fiona looked after a range of services from IT to Enforcement, Graveyards and Bin Collection (glamourous!) and led on health and community safety partnerships. • Assistant Director of Corporate Development and Performance Branch at GMP, where Fiona looked after a range of functions including Scanning, Planning, Inspection and Review and led on the Force wide Citizen Focus programme. • Improvement Manager at Salford Primary Care Trust, where Fiona looked after the staff and public engagement functions and led on the development of a programme of work to manage long-term conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. • Principal Community Safety Officer at Salford City Council where Fiona took the lead on the strategic development and operational roll-out and management of the Community Wardens Service across the City. Amongst other roles, and a bit of consultancy/coaching work, she has also worked for a Criminal Defence Solicitors’ Office in Scotland, taking witness statements, and that was when Fiona decided she no longer wanted to work for ‘The Dark Side’ and would rather be a Jedi! However, Fiona was never brave enough to be a Police Officer (her words), so she went off to study Criminology instead. Academic credentials include: • BA (Hons) Criminology from Nottingham Trent University, where she was supervised by Prof Nick Tilly. • MPhil Criminology from The Institute of Criminology at The University of Cambridge, where she focused on crime prevention and policing. MSc Human Resource Management from Manchester Metropolitan University, which Fiona self-funded and studied for in her own time whilst in the Director role at Rossendale. That’s where Fiona started researching resilience at work. Fiona is currently researching for a part-time PhD in Business and Management at the University of Manchester and her research focus is the role of compassion in the workplace in improving wellbeing and productivity. Fiona is lucky enough to be supervised by Prof Sir Cary Cooper. And to complete a trio of lucky encounters, Fiona was ‘sent’ for some coaching when she worked in Salford and was amazed to be allocated Pauline Clare as her coach. Fiona has recently written a ‘Compassion at Work Toolkit’ for the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing at Work (which is available on OscarKilo). She also designed the ‘Transformation Framework’ model which is being used by the College of Policing as the basis for their peer-review programme, to generate organisational improvement, and Fiona has delivered some training for them on this. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, a Member of the Institute of Directors, and an Associate of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development.

Deconstructing Dinner
Canadian Beef Consolidated Further / Backyard Chickens V

Deconstructing Dinner

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2009 58:38

Canadian Beef Consolidated Further Deconstructing Dinner examines the recent takeover of Canada's largest beef packing plant - Lakeside Packers, located in Brooks, Alberta. The plant maintains a capacity to process 4,700 head of cattle each day (that translates to a whopping 43% of all beef processed in Canada... from one facility!). The takeover leaves Alberta-based XL Foods with 51% control of Canadian beef and leaves just two companies controlling 83%. In light of the recent and largest meat recall in Canadian history, we now know just how much of an impact that a tainted product from one company (Maple Leaf Foods) can have on Canada's food supply. The idea of any further consolidation in the meat packing sector, would, understandably, leave an already shaky Canadian public quite concerned. To learn more about how this takeover might impact Canada's beef producers and the beef-eating public, we hear from the Competiton Bureau's Denis Courriveau and the National Farmers Union's Fred Tait. Backyard Chickens V (Farming in the City VII) Since March 2008, The Farming in the City series has been incorporating a focus on urban backyard chickens. If the thought of two companies controlling 83% of Canadian beef produced from only five plants turns you off of industrial protein, there is of course the increasingly popular alternative of finding some protein in your backyard. While digging up insects may be an option, backyard chickens might be easier, and for Vancouver residents, much easier! On March 5, Vancouver's city council unanimously approved a change to the city's bylaw that has long prohibited backyard chickens. Vancouver is now preparing itself for a backyard chicken revolution. We also hear from the familiar and entertaining Bucky Buckaw, as he responds to listener questions on whether chickens can be trained to do tricks! Guests Fred Tait - Manitoba Coordinator, National Farmers Union (NFU) (Rossendale, MB) - Fred and his wife have raised beef cattle all of their life on their farm in Rossendale, Manitoba (southwest of Portage la Prairie). The NFU "works toward the development of economic and social policies that will maintain the family farm as the primary food-producing unit in Canada". The National Farmers Union is the country's only voluntary, direct-membership national farm organization. Less than two weeks before Fred spoke to Deconstructing Dinner, he was in Ottawa speaking to the Standing Committee on Agriculture on the state of Canada's beef producers. Denis Corriveau - Senior Competition Law Officer, Industry Canada - Competition Bureau - (Gatineau, QC) - The Competition Bureau is an independent agency that, according to their web site, "contributes to the prosperity of Canadians by protecting and promoting competitive markets and enabling informed consumer choice." Headed by the Commissioner of Competition, the Bureau is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act. The basic operating assumption of the Competition Bureau is that competition is good for both business and consumers. Jeff Nield - Operations Manager, FarmFolk/CityFolk (Vancouver, BC) - FarmFolk/CityFolk Society is a non-profit society that works with farm & city to cultivate a local, sustainable food system. They develop and operate projects that provide access to & protection of foodlands; that support local, small scale growers and producers; and that educate, communicate and celebrate with local food communities. Bucky Buckaw - Host, Bucky Buckaw's Backyard Chicken Broadcast (Boise, ID) - Bucky Buckaw gives advice on raising backyard chickens as just one example of how a locally based economy can work. Through this segment, he informs listeners about the downside of factory farming and what kinds of toxic chemicals you can expect to find in the resultant livestock. He promotes organic gardening and composting, and supporting local farmers.
