Charisse Melendez Future Audiologist & Community Educator Charisse Meléndez is a third-year student at the University of Central Florida majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in Spanish. Mae Torra Biomedical Science Student & Environmental Advocate Mae Torra is a 2nd-year undergraduate student at the University of Central Florida, majoring in Biomedical Sciences on the Neuroscience Track with minors in Environmental Studies and Genomics & Bioinformatics. Over the summer of 2024, they conducted research in Brown University's Computational Neuroscience cohort through their Leadership Alliance SR-EIP. In the Neuroscience Alliance at UCF, they have served as a STEM Day Director, Event Director, and Secretary, with contributions ranging from designing educational activities for community outreach to hosting research workshops. In this episode, we're joined by one of the world's leading neuroscientists, Anil Seth, and Advaita Vedanta spiritual leader and scholar, Swami Sarvapriyananda, to explore ideas around consciousness. When we die, does our consciousness die with us, or is our body just a vehicle, at best, for a consciousness that continues?Most mainstream forms of western knowledge are based on an understanding that nothing exists outside of the physical world which follows the fundamental laws of physics. It posits that whatever we seek to understand, we need to do so using the tools of material reality. It seems however, that this largely shared assumption around the nature of reality falls apart for many of us when we think about what happens after death. By far the majority of people living on this planet believe in a consciousness, or a related term like ‘soul', that exists separate to our material body and can therefore continue after death. This belief is of course the basic building block of pretty much all religions - and all these beliefs share an assumption that there's a realm of disembodied mind, or spirit, which can continue after our body dies. In philosophy of mind, this belief is called ‘dualism'. But for most hard-nosed scientists and philosophers, there's something deeply problematic about dualism, of this separating out of conscious experience from the material world. Everything else can be explained using the tools of material reality. Welcome back to The Trip Report Podcast, a production of Beckley Waves.Today's conversation is with Shamil Chandaria, and as I alluded to in last week's newsletter introducing computational neuroscience—it is the longest and most technical conversation we've had to date.I have wanted to speak with Shamil since I watched his lecture at Oxford titled The Bayesian Brain and Meditation.Shamil is a former advisor to Google DeepMind, co-foudner and research fellow at Imperial College London Centre for Psychedelic Research and Oxford University's Centre for Eudaimonia and Human Flourishing, and a co-author with Robin Carhart-Harris and the Imperial team of the influential 2023 paper titled Canalization and Plasticity in Psychopathology, Importantly for this conversation, Shamil is also a longtime meditation practitioner, and his current work is dedicated to exploring contemplative practices, spiritual awakening, and psychedelics through the lens of computational neuroscience. At the heart of the conversation is the Free Energy Principle, a relatively new concept in cognitive neuroscience that conceives of the brain as a prediction machine constantly updating its internal models to minimize prediction errors. This podcast is primarily about nutrition and lifestyle, so why should we care about consciousness and self awareness?This is something I put today to Professor Anil Seth, a neuroscientist who has pioneered research into the brain basis of consciousness for more than twenty-five years. He is Professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience and Director of the Centre for Consciousness Science at the University of Sussex and his TED talks on how your brain hallucinates reality have been viewed more than sixteen million times.Even though this topic is slightly outside the realm of what we usually talk about, I think this subject matter is important for anyone who wants to learn more about how to live their best life. A physically healthier and psychologically happier one.Today we discuss how our brain can be tricked by simple visual illusions and what this tells us about perception of our every day.The importance of interoception and how we can become more interoceptive, and aware of our bodily functions, our emotions and corresponding behaviours.We also talk about what we can learn from spiritual practices and ancient philosophy, and where correlations exist between what we now know is underpinned by the science.A conversation about psychedelics ensures, whether it's accurate to state that we can experience a “higher state of consciousness” and whether AI can ever become conscious.His best selling book “Being You” is an incredible read that I highly recommend. We also get on to talk about gratitude and Anil's tips for being more aware and how that may translate into a happier state of mind.
How and why did human's develop self-awareness of what we know and don't know? How does it develop in relation to how we evaluate what other people know? What are the risks of cognitive bias tainting our ability to learn and self correct? In this episode, we have the interesting question of our own self-awareness, or Meta-cognition, to understand. For centuries philosophers have called on us to “know thyself”, but only now with the tools of modern neuroscience have we been able to scientifically quantify the way we consciously track our behaviour, performance, thoughts and knowledge. So today we'll be getting into why this is important for learning and error correction; we're going to talk about meta-cognition's use for “mind reading” I.e. tracking our confidence in others in their own knowledge, both friends and foes, fundamental for the evolution of our collaborative groups; the implications of cognitive bias blind spots in metacognition for updating our collective beliefs over time; also whether metacognition is proportionally correlated to intelligence; and how technology and AI has and will influence the future of our self-awareness, and whether it's convenient to try programming AI to be metacognitive too, or if that would invite disaster. His other positions have included: Honorary Lecturer in Neurosurgery at St. Bartholomew's & Royal London School of Medicine, Director of the International Neuro-Psychoanalysis Centre, London, and Director of the Arnold Pfeffer Center for Neuro-Psychoanalysis at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. Ogi Ogas is a Mathematical Neuroscientist and Author. He attained his PhD in Computational Neuroscience at Boston University. He was a United States Department of Homeland Security Fellow during his graduate studies, and is the director of the Dark Horse Project in the Laboratory for the Science of Individuality at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
