Niall Morahan will also be in action for Sligo Rovers in their final home league game of the season at they face relegation threatened Cork City also on Saturday evening. We're welcoming back inter county gaelic games this weekend as our footballers and hurlers are in National League action, we're chatting to managers of both teams as well as an in-depth discussion with Niall Morahan of Sligo Rovers ahead of their trip to Shelbourne on Sunday. We take a look at the truncated sports fixture list with a look at Gaelic Games (0:15) and our county footballers and hurlers as well as SSE Airtricity League (2:01), Women's National League (2:44) and Community Series Rugby (3:24) Amid growing fears of restrictions and the second wave of the coronavirus our county footballers face a trip to Newry to take on Down in their penultimate league fixture. We had a chat with Terry Hyland (4:40) ahead of the important league clash between the sides on Saturday, throw in at 4pm. Olcan Conway (16:56), manager of the Leitrim Hurlers joins us to discuss his side's preparation for the Division 3B Hurling Final in the National Hurling League on Sunday from the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence at 1:30pm. Both games are live on the GAAGO streaming service with a €5 charge per game. Finally we sit down with Niall Morahan (28:23) of Sligo Rovers to discuss his side's status as the surprise package of the league restart, rising up the table from bottom spot to a peak of third and the struggles in recent weeks to recapture that restart form. This week on the Sports Roundup Show we're reacting to the reality that local sport isn't going to be with us for the next few weeks at a minimum as the GAA led the announcements this week that local and amateur sports would be closed down until further notice. We're joined by Leitrim GAA Chairman Enda Stenson to discuss the impact in Leitrim as well as a look at the sport which did take place over the weekend. In our roundup we'll focus on Glencar/Manor's assault on the Connacht Ladies Football Intermediate Club Championship (0:41) with a victory over Mayo club Kilmovee Shamrocks on Sunday in a brave display by the Leitrim champs. Carrick Hurling left it late to force extra time and repeated the trick to win the game at the death in the Senior Hurling final (1:57) against Cluainin Iomaint on Saturday evening. In National League Soccer (3:14) it was a mixed bag for Leitrim players with Niall Morahan and his Sligo Rovers team mates falling to a 4-0 defeat to champions elect Shamrock Rovers while Dearbhaile Beirne and her Peamount United doubled down on their recent league victory over rivals Shelbourne to ease into the FAI Cup Semi Final on a scoreline of 1-0. In Rugby the new look Energia Community Shield (5:08) continued with it's second round with Matthew Earley at hooker for Sligo and helping them continue their 100% winning start to the season with a 25-15 win over Galwegians in the Connacht conference, Fenagh's Jack Gilheaney made his first start at inside centre for Old Belvedere in their 22-15 defeat to UCD in the Leinster conference. Both players would also feature on gaelic football pitches over the weekend too. Earley winning a Junior 'C' title with Leitrim Gaels two hours after the final whistle and Gilheaney playing for Leitrim in a challenge game on Sunday morning. We also take a run through the local results in Leitrim GAA (5:57), the Sligo Leitrim & District Soccer League (7:13), Junior Connacht Rugby (9:43). We start out with a very special guest with Leitrim GAA Chairman Enda Stenson (10:23) joining Breifne to discuss the impact locally of the national blanket ban on all GAA Club games across the entire country. He speaks specifically about the impact on the five adult teams who have championship games, Intermediate finalists Annaduff & Gortletteragh, Junior pair Aughavas & Cloone and Glencar/Manor in the Connacht Ladies Club Final and the total devastation caused in underage competitions in the county. He also shares his personal concerns and fears with the National Football League tie in Park Esler in Newry, Co. Down in a couple of weeks and his own attendance at the game and what impact might arise from Leitrim's participation in that game considering the current situation with the virus figures coming from the North of Ireland. Our remaining guests this week come from the main sporting events of the weekend including that fantastic result from Glencar/Manor in the Connacht Ladies Club Championship Semi Final where Breifne spoke to John Sheridan (24:06), Mellissa Hewitt (26:52) & Amanda Sweeney (30:23). After the snatch and grab from Carrick Hurling we spoke to their late goalscorer James Glancy (32:50) & manager Hilary Phelan (35:19) as well as the player of the match Gavin O'Hagan (38:49). In the Junior C Final, Leitrim Gaels edged out the challenge of Dromahair and we spoke to the winning manager Peter Goldrick (40:23) & defeated captain Martin Clancy (41:39) after the game. We also featured participants in both Junior A Semi Finals after Aughavas and Cloone progressed to the final at the expense of Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher and Glencar/Manorhamilton respectively. We spoke to Aidy McCallion of Glenfarne/Kilty after his side's defeat (43:56) and Fintan McBrien (47:09) & Fintan Gallogly (51:36) of Aughavas. After the second semi final we spoke to winning manager Philip Charles (53:38) and his players Gavin Reynolds (57:47) & Seamus Maguire (61:05) from the winning side, Cloone, and penalty saving keeper and captain of the beaten semi finalists Manor, Luke Sheridan (63:12).

We're going to dive deep into the background of all four teams, Mohill (8:57) & St. Mary's (30:20) in the senior decider with Annaduff & Gortletteragh featuring in the Intermediate Final (52:13), with some very special invited guests on today's show. We'll be chatting to Matt Gaffey, an esteemed coach who won Senior Championships as manager of both Mohill (1971) and St. Mary's (2007). Gene Bohan, Kevin Glancy & Kevin McKenna won all won medals with St. Mary's in 1995 will be talking about living the experience through their sons as Oisin, James and Paddy prepare for the final on Sunday. At Intermediate Level, Donal Fox of Annaduff joins Derek Kelleher of Gortletteragh to discuss rivalries between the two sides. There's talk of long term grief counselling, memory loss and getting refused from The Power House and no desire for penalties to split the teams. First we'll be looking at all the sporting fixtures of the entire weekend with action in those Gaelic Football Finals (0:45), Ladies Football Connacht Club action for Mohill Ladies (5:12) and two playoffs at Junior 'B' (5:37) level, one for relegation, one for the final semi final spot. In National League soccer it's away days for all local interest. Mohill's Dearbhaile Beirne will also feature for Peamount Utd against Shelbourne in the Women's National League (6:05), Niall Morahan returns for Sligo Rovers in a must win game in Waterford to keep their European dream alive in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division (6:48) while Longford Town face "The Midland's El Classico" with the short trip to Athlone Town this evening in the First Division (7:20). Locally in the Sligo Leitrim League (7:49) it's home ties all around on week 3 as Dromohair host Chaffpool Utd on Saturday evening in the Premier League as an unbeaten Manor Rangers entertain Ballisodare in the top flight on Sunday morning. Carrick Town will also be looking to extend their unbeaten record with a victory at home to St. Johns. In Junior Rugby (8:27) Carrick on Shannon RFC continue their Curley Cup campaign with a home game against Creggs while Sligo RFC travel to Connemara in the Cawley Cup.
It was all about the final four in gaelic football this weekend. Mohill and St. Mary's will meet in two weeks time in the Senior County Final but we'll be getting reaction from all the games played over the weekend as well as looking over the local soccer action from opening weekend. We start with a look at the results (0:26) of the entire weekend across the two Minor (2:11) football championship finals, Senior (3:27) & Intermediate (4:28) gaelic football championship semi finals and Ladies Football featuring at Senior (7:06) and Junior (9:50) championship level. We'll also be taking a look at the soccer scene at local (10:36) and national level with Niall Morahan's red card (14:42), Dearbhaile Beirne's title challenge with Peamount United (16:16) and Muireann Devaney's winner for Sligo Rovers WU17 (16:50). After the GAA games played over the weekend we hear from Fenagh's Donal Wrynn (17:41) and Joe Flynn (20:07) while Mohill's Keith Beirne (24:31) and Liam Keenan (26:55) share their delight at securing their final place. From the other Semi Final we hear from player's on both sides, last year's winning captain Conor Dolan (33:23) and Carrick stalwart Jonathan Cassidy (30:14) as well as their respective managers Sean Boylan (36:06) and Denis Connerton (39:33). On the ladies side of the sport Ballinamore secured their berth with a hard fought victory over Kiltubrid on Sunday morning. At Intermediate level Carrigallen ran out of road chasing the concession of 3 early goals to Annaduff. We spoke to players Gary Reynolds (54:51) and Sean McNabola (60:03) as well as their bosses Brian Doyle (62:48) & Karl Foley (65:43). In the other side of the final four draw, Gortletteragh needed extra time to see off the challenge of Dromahair. A battered and bloodied Cian Clinton (70:35) of Dromahair and Francie Flynn (74:40) gave the players perspective while Padraig Clancy (76:35) and Paul McGuire (79:21) also give the sideline view on the game. Finally we hear from Thomas McDonald (81:31), player / manager of Manor Rangers after his side drew their first game in the opening weekend of the Sligo Leitrim & District Super League.

A great weekend for soccer in Leitrim this weekend as Manor Rangers secured some silverware with a 5-1 victory in the Glasshouse Hotel Cup Final. After the game we spoke to Manorhamilton Rangers players Brian McDonald (14:58), Robbie Cunningham (18:11), Assistant Manager Sean Gallagher (20:16) & Player / Manager Thomas McDonald (23:29). In Ladies Football (3:22) Kiltubrid secured their semi final spot while nothing could seperate last year's finalists St. Josephs and Glencar/Manor in their Senior Championship clash. We spoke to Michelle Heslin (27:01), Ailbhe Clancy (28:04) & Padhraic Corrigan (30:50) after the game. The Leitrim GAA Junior 'A' Championship continued as Gortletteragh and Aughawillan were eliminated from the competition ahead of their last games in the group. Gortletteragh's fate was sealed in defeat to Glenfarne/Kilty in Ballinaglera on Saturday evening, we caught up with Glenfarne manager Aidy McCallion (32:34) and Gortletteragh's Terry Kelleher (36:22) after the game. Allen Gaels, Mohill & Melvin Gaels secured their progression to the Semi Finals of the Junior 'B' Championship with one more team to progress when the groups are settled in two weeks time while at Junior 'C' level Aughavas nailed down their Semi Final spot with their second victory while Dromahair will be relying on results elsewhere to qualify after their defeat to Bornacoola. After the Allen Gaels V St. Mary's game we hear from Martin Raftery (41:40) and St. Mary's keeper Willie Guckian (39:29) We close the show with a in depth discussion with Sligo Rovers' player Niall Morahan (43:56) after their 3-1 victory over league champions Dundalk capped off a fantastic week for the club with their four wins in five games seeing them in their highest league position in six years.

First up is a look at the Ladies Football fixtures (0:41) for the weekend with a repeat of last season's senior final between Glencar/Manor and St. Joseph's on Sunday morning the top game of the weekend. Encouraging signs in her first pre season in the sport last season saw great excitement about her prospects but an untimely injury saw her miss the entire campaign in Western Australia. She's been home in Ireland, recovering and rehabing ahead of her return to Fremantle later in the year. We also talk about the advances within the Leitrim Ladies setup this season as well as the progress of the championships within the county in recent weeks. In soccer (12:00) we take a look at the national league fixtures featuring Leitrim players as Niall Morahan and Dearbhaile Beirne are back in action this weekend with both Sligo Rovers and Peamount United making the journey to Cork to face Cork City tonight and tomorrow afternoon respectively. The unmistakable voice of John Lynch (15:16) shares a few stories with us about how he first got involved in radio broadcasting in school and how he found his way to becoming Head of Sport at Shannonside FM and his life working with Ocean FM, RTE & Eir Sport. It’s wins all around in soccer (2:38) this weekend with Niall Morahan of Sligo Rovers and Dearbhaile Beirne and her Peamount United teammates all securing wins at national league levels on Saturday evening. Aaron Hickey converted a late penalty to secure a 5-4 victory for his Manor Rangers team over Merville United in Sligo on Sunday. We run through the results in the Connacht Gold Senior Football Championship (4:03), Smith Monumentals Intermediate Football Championship (6:23) & Vistamed Junior B & C Championships (7:07). We also run through the Ladies Football results at Senior (10:43), Intermediate (12:30) and Junior (13:08) grades. We hear from some of the participants of the Senior Championship games with a chat with James Phelan (26:57),manager of Melvin Gaels, spoke to Breifne on Sunday evening, the day after their table topping victory over county champions, Glencar Manorhamilton. Dom Corrigan (16:14), Wayne McKeon (21:15), Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins manager & captain and Daire Farrell (24:03) of St. Mary’s give their assessment of the senior clash between the sides on Saturday evening. We also spoke to David Bruen (34:56) of Leitrim Gaels and Nigel Maguire (39:15) of Drumreilly after an entertaining championship game in Leitrim Village on Saturday evening. On the ladies side of the game we caught up with Dearbhla Rooney (41:30) of Glencar / Manor after their reversal at the hands of Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins on Sunday morning. Friday evening saw Kiltubrid emerge with the win against St. Francis to put them in pole position to win the battle for the final Semi final spot. Caoimhe McGarry (44:12) and Emma Guckian (46:04) joined us after the game. Breifne also caught up with Leitrim Ladies manager Hugh Donnelly (48:00) who brought us up to date with the impact of the Covid lockdown on his sides plans and preparations. Former county star Fintan McBrien (52:54) of Aughavas shares the importance of Junior football in terms of both developing young players, giving old timers like himself a run out and the social aspect of keeping players involved in the club. On the ladies side at junior level we spoke to Elizabeth Honeyman (57:44) of Fenagh and Aisling Faulkner (59:42) of Glencar / Manor after the northerners edge their junior ladies clash by a single point.

Breifne Earley is joined by Declan Bohan, Secretary of Leitrim GAA to look at the structures, dates and draws for the Championships which will all kick off in two weekends time, They discuss the draws, the rules which have been brought in to reduce the risk of spreading the virus, the impact the shutdown has had on the finances of Leitrim GAA and finally a look forward to a busy fortnight of league and championship action for our county footballers later in the year. PJ Ryan, secretary of the Ladies Football Association in the county explains the changes to the ladies football competition structures to facilitate extra games at all levels for the adult clubs which will return one week later than their male counterparts at the end of July. Also Breifne and PJ talk about this week's draw for the LGFA Intermediate Football Championship which sees Leitrim face Meath and Down in Group 3 of the championship with the group winner progressing to the Semi Final. Finally with all the discussion about possible return of the the League of Ireland we have white smoke regarding the format, number of games, finances and the issues surrounding relegation and promotion which proved to be the final stumbling block. Niall Morahan joins Breifne to talk about his experience of being back at training, the differences between session pre and post Covid restrictions, the phenomenal response from the supporters of the Bit O'Red to their request for funds to ensure they see out the season.

We speak to Ladies manager Hugh Donnelly after the Leitrim girls blew away the challenge of Limerick in their league clash while captain Clare Owens and newly returned midfielder Sarah McLoughlin talk about their experience so far this season. Sligo Rover's manager Liam Buckley and Leitrim's representative in the team Niall Morahan speak to Breifne after their defeat to Shamrock Rovers on Saturday evening. Despite Niall scoring his first goal for the Bit O'Red it wasn't enough to secure their first league points of the season. Our Ladies Football Minor team continued their Connacht Championship campaign with a spirited performance against Mayo on Friday evening under lights in Cloone. Their manager Jerome Quinn spoke to Breifne about the impact belief in their abilities can have for Leitrim athletes running the visitors to a 4 point margin in the game as their bid for a Connacht final place continues. Finally Declan Bohan, Secretary of Leitrim GAA, explains the new club league structures which will allow the average club player in Leitrim to have more games particularly when Inter County activity is at it's highest levels in March, May & June most years.

It's one of those weekends some Leitrim sports coaches might be wishing fell foul of the horrendous weather conditions across the country with defeats for the footballers, hurlers, ladies and U20 sides in gaelic games while Sligo Rovers and Manor Rangers were also beaten over the weekend. Longford Town and Sligo Rugby did brighten up an otherwise dreary weekend locally. We'll hear from manager Terry Hyland after their disappointing second half performance saw a one point lead turned to a eight point defeat for the Leitrim side. Ryan O'Rourke talks to us about what it's like to be back in the starting team after extended injuries and Shane Moran on the flipside of missing out on the first 15 as he makes a second half appearance for the team. Hugh Donnelly will talk us through the wind affected game in Cooley as his ladies side were beaten by a single point by the now league leaders Louth. He speaks about the removal of whatever safety net was there to reach the league final later in the campaign. Treasurer of the Hurling Board, Paddy O'Connor, updates us on the hurler's outing against Sligo in what has been a disappointing campaign so far. We get chatting about the outlook as Leitrim have one eye on the championship season in a few weeks. Gary Donohoe, manager of the U20 footballers, chats after a disappointing encounter with Galway where the opponents just found an extra gear in the second half to stretch their three point lead to a much more comfortable margin by the end of the game. He tells us about some of the talent in the squad. We also hear from Sligo Rovers manager Liam Buckley after his side's defeat to St. Patrick's Athletic on Friday evening, their disappointing start to the season and how Leitrim's own Niall Morahan has been their stand out performer so far. Finally Aodh Dervin of Longford Town chats to Breifne about being back on the field after a lengthy off season, getting on the scoresheet and getting up and running against Shamrock Rovers second string on Saturday evening.
This weekend we're looking back at a fairly curtailed sporting programme after the arrival of Storm Dennis put paid to a fair chunk of the fixtures set for the weekend. Leitrim U20's clash with Galway and Manor Rangers Connacht Cup game all fell foul while our Hurlers lost home advantage with a trip to Cavan. Supported by the Local Enterprise Office Leitrim ahead of Local Enterprise Week 2020 from 2nd-6th March. As well as the postponed Tony McGowan Road Race from Drumshanbo Athletic Club, the entire U13 & U17 club football programme was ripped up by the weather as the clubs will need another week to get their seasons up and running. The Road Race has been rescheduled for Sunday, the 8th March. On Friday evening Niall Morahan and his Sligo Rovers team mates got their SSE Airtricity League season up and running albeit slowly with a 1-0 reversal at the hands of north west rivals Finn Harps. We spoke to Declan Boyle of Leitrim Sports Partnership and Highland Radio as well as a former player with both clubs, after the final whistle. Manorhamilton's Muireann Devaney continued to develop her emerging reputation with the Irish soccer squads as she played a key role in both games against Iceland over the weekend in Waterford. As well as on impressing on the pitch, Muireann was awarded her Irish Cap for 2019 at a ceremony on Saturday evening. We spoke to one of the Irish U17 Coaching staff Dave Rooney after a successful camp for the Sligo Rovers player. In Rugby, Matthew Earley featured for Sligo Rugby as they restarted their assault on the play off places in Division 2B of the Energia All Ireland League. After two near misses against Blackrock College it was third time lucky for the westerners after they emerged from the mudbath in awful conditions in Stradbrook with the 10-5 win on Saturday evening. We spoke to Matthew Earley after the victory. Finally we talk to Anna from CrossFit Carrick about a Nutrition Seminar taking place in their gym on Thursday evening in Carrick on Shannon at 7:30pm. It's priced at €15 and open to all members of the community whether they are members of the gym or not. All are welcome. This weekend all eyes were on the small ball with the Senior Hurling final between Carrick Hurling and Cluainín Iomaint of Manorhamilton on Saturday afternoon. Carrick Hurling secured their 33rd county senior title with a 1-20 to 0-21 win after extra time and Breifne Earley caught up with their coach Olcan Conway, captain Cathal McCrann, goalscorer Stephen Goldrick and man of the match James Glancy after their victory. Cluainín's Declan Ryan shared his disappointment after they probably edged the encounter but ending up on the losing side. Sean O'Heslins Ballinamore slipped up in their bid to secure a league final place when despite a number of scorable chances late in the game they were unable to close a single point gap to get the draw they needed to reach the final. Mohill, their opponents yesterday will now face St. Mary's Kiltoghert in the league final next Saturday afternoon in Avantcard Pairc Sean MacDiarmada. Breifne spoke to Shane Quinn & Liam Keenan from Mohill as well as Keelan McHugh of Sean O'Heslins after the game. Niall Morahan and Sligo Rovers were on the losing side of a 2-1 scoreline against high flying Derry City in the Showgrounds on Saturday evening for the last home fixture of this season. Rovers took the lead early in the encounter but were unable to hold on to their lead and eventually lost out by the odd goal in three. Both Glencar / Manor and Carrick Town recorded 4-3 victories in the Sligo / Leitrim & District League over the weekend while local referee Emma Cleary has been selected to act as 4th official for the Women's Senior FAI Cup Final in which Dearbhaile Beirne will feature for Peamount United. In what was a disappointing weekend for Rugby, Matthew Earley was unable to prevent his Sligo Rugby side slipping to a 20-15 defeat to Wanderers in Dublin on Saturday in Division 2B of the All Ireland League.

Eimhin Quinn and Anthony O'Donnell join Breifne to share the heartbreak of the Aughawillan girls 4 point defeat to MacHale Rovers of Mayo in their Junior Semi Final while St. Joseph's secured their passage to a final with a victory over Roscommon opposition in the shape of neighbours Kilglass. Breifne is speaking to Donal Wrynn of Fenagh after his team ensured they will be in the Senior Championship draw next season with a straight forward victory over Gortletteragh yesterday afternoon. We also hear from the secretary of Gortletteragh, Darren Mulvey, about what's going on in their club after a disappointing season and what the future holds for the now relegated side. Niall Morahan drops in to chat about his man of the match performance for Sligo Rovers against Shamrock Rovers on Saturday night when Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was in the stadium to watch his direct opponent Jack Byrne. Finally we get a chance to speak to Dearbhla Rooney of Sean McDermott's Boxing Club about what her life has been like since winning a bronze medal at the Youth Olympics in Argentina last year.

In Soccer, Niall Morahan and his Sligo Rovers team mates faced League Champions Dundalk in the Semi Final of the FAI Cup in a sold out Showgrounds in Sligo yesterday evening. A last minute Michael Duffy winner in a 1-0 victory put paid to their Aviva Stadium dreams for this season. Glencar / Manor and Sean O'Heslins progressed to the Senior County Final at the expense of Melvin Gaels and Mohill respectively, we discuss the games with Conor Dolan & Shane Ward (Glencar / Manor), Emlyn Mulligan (Melvin Gaels), Luke Murphy & Dom Corrigan (Sean O'Heslins) and Liam Keenan (Mohill). In the Intermediate grade Leitrim Gaels overcame Annaduff yesterday while Drumkeerin will be their opponents in the final after defeating local rivals Ballinaglera on Saturday evening. We hear from Mal Guckian & Enda Moreton (Leitrim Gaels), Karl Foley (Annaduff), Francie Davitt & Colm Clarke (Drumkeerin) and Kevin Nolan (Ballinaglera). Aughawillan took home the Intermediate Ladies crown with a tight victory over Mohill as Keeldra Gaels left it very late against a resolute Drumkeerin side to seal their own silverware in the Junior Championship. Breifne spoke to player of the game Shaylyn Ward (Keeldra Gaels) as well as both managers Tommy Ginty (Drumkeerin) and John Campbell (Keeldra Gaels). Not a day for goalkeepers as St. Mary's managed to secure the Minor 13-a-side championship in a goal fest against Dromahair with both sides scoring at least ten goals. Carrick Town picked up a good league point against Calry Bohs as Manor Rangers bowed out of the FAI Junior Cup at the first round stage to Ballaghaderreen of Roscommon. We also feature the underage soccer results including Carrick Town's first ever girls game at U16 level. In Rugby, Carrick still waiting for their league season to kick off next weekend, but former player Matthew Earley was a member of the Sligo second's side who got their Connacht J1A league campaign up and running with a 66-7 victory over Buccaneers ahead of the start of their Division 2B All Ireland League campaign which starts next week against Galwegians.

Melvin Gaels boss James Phelan and Glencar Manor’s Shane Ward compare notes on their preparations while Daniel Beck talks about the ups and downs in Mohill’s season so far. Patricia Forde, captain of Keeldra Gaels joins us to talk about her sides chances of replicating their league success in their second final of the season against Drumkeeran tomorrow evening. Niall Morahan joins Breifne to talk about his big weekend with a sell out crowd expected in the Showgrounds for their semi final against Dundalk. The Bit o’ Red have already beaten Dundalk this season back in April, but with Dundalk on a 29 game unbeaten streak since then the odds are stacked in their favour. Breifne also looks briefly at the Intermediate semi finals between northern rivals Drumkeeran and Ballinaglera and Annaduff face Leitrim Gaels in the other game. He also touches on the ladies intermediate final between Aughawillan and Mohill.

Hannah Johnston and her U18 Connacht Rugby team-mates were beaten by Ulster in the Inter Provincial Championship Semi Final by Ulster as Sligo RFC First Team secured a top 2 finish in the Men's Connacht Senior League with a victory over Corinthians to set up a possible first league title win with the final game next week against Galwegians. Finally we take a look at the two minor finals played last weekend, In the Ladies U18 final between Allen Gaels and St. Felim's in Cloone. First we speak to St. Felim's joint captains Genevieve Canning and Grainne Prior, their coach Ray McBrien after their victory in the final while Dermot McDonagh joins us to talk about his sides performance. In the Boy's U17 final replay St. Mary's had just a single point advantage at the end of the second hour of this particular tie. Gaelic Games dominates with the opening of the McGovern Aughavas Leitrim GAA Centre of Excellence in Annaduff, the last round of group games in the Senior and Intermediate Championship, the Ladies Semi Finals and the Minor Final. We start with Boxing and Soccer though, with Dean Clancy reaching the Quarter Final of the European Youth Championships. Niall Morahan, Ailbhe Clancy and Dearbhaile Beirne all reached the Semi Finals of their FAI Senior Cups with their respective National League clubs and Carrick Town's return to adult soccer is a welcome addition to the sporting landscape in the county. We speak to Carrick Town Manager Jason Kavanagh. Melvin Gaels won the battle of the North against Glencar / Manor while Drumreilly reached the Quarter Finals despite losing to Mohill to finalise the line up for the Championship Quarter Finals. Emlyn Mulligan and Conor Dolan tell us how they saw their clash game. We see a repeat of the county final of last season with Mohill and Aughawillan the pick of the games next Sunday. Morgan Quinn shares his thoughts on their victory and the championship so far. We also hear from St. Mary's Joseph Flynn and double goalscorer Oisin Bohan. Leitrim Gaels showed what they offer with a demolition of Drumkeerin as Aughavas lost out by the smallest margin to Kiltubrid. Bornacoola's third draw saw them through to the knock out stages. Glencar / Manor proved last season's Ladies Final appearance was no fluke with a one point victory over Kiltubrid in Cloone on Friday, while St. Josephs' victory over Oughteragh Gaels ensured a familiar ring to the final as they chase their third title in a row in three weeks. We chat to Glencar / Manor manager Padraig Corrigan after their game. Breifne also spoke to St. Joseph's Michelle Heslin and Oughteragh Gaels forward Laura O'Dowd after their clash in Fenagh yesterday. St. Francis secured their senior status, Breifne spoke to Paul Martin as he indicates he's not going to be involved with the side next season, but he's happy with the group's progress over the last 2 years. Finally we take a look back to the U17 final on Friday evening where a end to end battle took place between MacDiarmada Gaels and St. Mary's with both sides having to come back again next week to repeat the clash after an injury time free levelled matters at the death of the game.
It's all about the next generation on the show today. With the Senior and Intermediate gaelic football championships on an off weekend we're taking a look at the rising generation of International and Provincial stars from within the county in some of the other sports including Soccer, Rugby and Volleyball. There is no rest for the women's football however and Breifne is chatting to Laura O'Dowd of Oughteragh Gaels about Leitrim Ladies fantastic result to secure their Intermediate status last weekend and her club's crunch clash with Dromahair on Sunday where a win is required to keep their semi final hopes alive. The show will also be looking at some of the young athletes who have been making waves on the international and provincial scene including Manorhamilton's Hannah Johnston and Leitrim Village's Matthew Earley who will be aiming to defend their respective Inter Provincial titles won in the jersey of Connacht Rugby last season. They are joined in the Connacht ranks this year with Will Whelan (U19) from Manorhamilton and Ballinamore's Eddie Coyle (U18) for the Inter Provincial series. Soccer also features with the return of the Sligo / Leitrim league and the big news from a Leitrim perspective is the return of an adult team from Carrick Town to the Premier League for the first time in a number of years, while Manorhamilton Rangers will be hoping to improve on their forth place finish in the Super League table this time around. Both sides have been watching with interest this week as their former players have been making headlines. Muireann Devaney was in great Kompany this week as former Man City skipper Vincent Kompany dropped into her Irish U17 squad training session ahead of two games with Belgium, she shares the experience with us. Niall Morahan talks about his new contract / scholarship with Sligo Rovers which sees his future in the game secure until the end of the 2021 SSE Airtricity League season. The news a welcome distraction from his current spot on the treatment table after picking up an injury at the recent U19 European Championships.
Niall Morahan has signed a new contract with Sligo Rovers as he becomes the first recipient of the new IT Sligo Scholarship programme with the club. The Republic of Ireland Under-19 international has penned a deal until the end of 2021 season and will begin his IT Sligo course in September. Niall will be undertaking a business degree. This weekend Aughnasheelin's Barry McWeeney joins Breifne to look forward to his sides crunch Division 1 fixture with Fenagh St. Caillins which is a must win if they want to stay in the top division of the league. He chats about how the changes to the club leagues are a step in the right direction but won't solve the basic problem of low numbers for rural sides like Aughnasheelin. He raises the idea of a divisional side or amalgamations to allow senior players to play week in week out at that level. With a crunch relegation battle with neighbours Fenagh and a tough start to the championship campaign with Champions Aughawillan and St. Mary's first up in the next two weeks. He outlines how the club are aiming to be competitive enough in both competitions to retain their Division 1 and Senior status. Ultra Runner Ricki Wynne discusses the sport and the impact that himself and his two brothers Brian and Alan have made in endurance mountain trail running over the last three years with top 20 finishes in the Ultra Trail World Tour. Their next World Tour event is the Kerry Ultra in September. Sligo Rover's Niall Morahan joins us to discuss the beauty of Yerevan where he's in the Irish squad at the UEFA U19 Championships in Armenia. He talks about the positive mood in the Irish camp after their defeat to the French and their chances of progression to a semi final after their game tomorrow afternoon against the Czech Republic. This week on 'A Current Affair' Breifne is joined by Cllrs Mary Bohan and Finola Armstrong McGuire to discuss the issues of the week in the county. Having seen the number of women councillors drop to just 3 at the recent election, they discuss the impact of women in politics locally and the role that women have to play in the development of local government. Finola discusses the current N4 road improvement works in Carrick on Shannon and how there will be unavoidable delays through the town for the next six weeks. The decision to undertake these works was made at a national level and is out of the hands of the council. Mary discusses her interaction with CEO of the County Council, Lar Power, at the recent Council meeting where it was made quite clear to the council members that the executive staff would be withdrawn from any discussion on planning permission applications outside of the official planning process. The importance of volunteering and developing those skills within community groups and the value that these individuals and groups bring to life around the county including organising festivals, tidy towns committees and charitable causes. Finola talks about the selection of Senator Frank Feighan to the Fine Gael ticket for the upcoming general election. The discussion ends with a conversation about the problems with graveyard maintenance around the county where lack of finances at council level has resulted in failure to maintain council owned burial grounds particularly in the north of the county. Breifne also catches up with Niall Morahan at the U19 European Championships in Armenia ahead of his side's clash with France this evening.
