ON this week's podcast we're joined by eight-time All-Ireland winner Ciara O'Sullivan to chat about the ongoing protests from female inter-county footballers and camogie players.A statement released on June 19th by the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) revealed the players felt that 'our National Governing Bodies do not want to hear our real concerns.'Since then, inter-county teams have been playing under protest, with both teams at last weekend's All-Ireland quarter-final between Cork and Armagh wearing jerseys with a sign saying #UnitedForEquality, and players will refuse to fulfil official media obligations for the rest of the championship season. It's a fluid situation, but Ciara O'Sullivan joined us to give the players perspective on what progress has been made and what their hopes for the future are.Elsewhere, we chat about Plunkett's brilliant county junior B football championship win and if they can make it a double with the club's hurling team in another junior B final this weekend. After Carlow's final Joe McDonagh Cup game against Westmeath in 2021, David English stepped down from inter-county hurling. He admits it was a tough decision but now he concentrates on club hurling. He has won Christy Ring and Joe McDonagh Cup finals in Croke Park with Carlow and has pocketed minor and under 21 medals with Ballinkillen. He covets a senior title with Ballinkillen. Here, he reflects on his hurling career with club and county.
Shane Redmond enjoyed a long career at underage and senior inter-county football with Carlow. Before the start of the 2022 season he announced that he was retiring but would continue to play football with his club, Tinryland. There are many aspects of playing with Carlow that he continues to miss but the sacrifices he made and the sacrifices his family, his girlfriend and friends made to support him he is glad that is behind him. He recently attended a wedding in Mexico and was able to go without the worry of his obligations to the county team. With the Tailteann Cup draw to be made in a few days time, he says the competition is a good idea but is not so sure it will work in its current format. He suggests a structure which, he says, would be acceptable to the players and which might further motivate them. He says his club, Tinryland, have the potential to break the stranglehold Rathvilly and Éire Og have on club senior football in the county.

It seems kind of fitting to be female dominated on the show this weekend for International Women's Day as we're chatting Ladies Football at Senior and Minor Level as well as featuring Sligo Rover's newest goalscorer Niall Morahan after the Bit O'Red's defeat to Shamrock Rovers. We start the show with a look at all the sporting action across the weekend affecting Leitrim teams, athletes and supporters including Ladies Football, Club Gaelic Games & Sligo Rovers. We speak to Ladies manager Hugh Donnelly after the Leitrim girls blew away the challenge of Limerick in their league clash while captain Clare Owens and newly returned midfielder Sarah McLoughlin talk about their experience so far this season. Sligo Rover's manager Liam Buckley and Leitrim's representative in the team Niall Morahan speak to Breifne after their defeat to Shamrock Rovers on Saturday evening. Despite Niall scoring his first goal for the Bit O'Red it wasn't enough to secure their first league points of the season. Our Ladies Football Minor team continued their Connacht Championship campaign with a spirited performance against Mayo on Friday evening under lights in Cloone. Their manager Jerome Quinn spoke to Breifne about the impact belief in their abilities can have for Leitrim athletes running the visitors to a 4 point margin in the game as their bid for a Connacht final place continues. Finally Declan Bohan, Secretary of Leitrim GAA, explains the new club league structures which will allow the average club player in Leitrim to have more games particularly when Inter County activity is at it's highest levels in March, May & June most years.

The Allianz national hurling and football leagues are back, and Kerry and the Dubs gave us a pretty much perfect opening night performance. We had sportsmanship, brawls, insane cameos from Brian Fenton, Ciarán Kilkenny and David Clifford, and at the end of it all, another draw. Oisin McConville and Sean O'Sullivan are on hand to talk us through all that, as well as Donegal's Mayo problem, Mayo's talent problem, and talented footballers named after fish. Kobe Bryant's death in a helicopter crash yesterday has sparked a huge global reaction - we speak to Jack McCallum of Sports Illustrated about his complicated legacy in the sport. Plus there's planning for the mark, senior hurling politics, Duff beer, and the deeply unsatisfactory way we find out about celebrity deaths now.
This week we're talking to one of Leitrim's favourite citizens. A former school principal, steeped in the GAA and no stranger to a microphone as one of the counties most called upon Master of Ceremonies, Ballinamore man Tommy Moran is a very welcome guest on the show. A former Inter County gaelic football referee, Tommy was one of the foremost officials in Gaelic Games at club, county and provincial level. He talks about his background in amateur dramatics with the Carrigallen Players winning Best Supporting Actor in the National Drama Festival. He talks about how he found himself in the position of County Secretary and Connacht Council President almost by accident after the passing of two of his colleagues and friends, Stanley Cox and Leo Kenny, left a vacancy in each of the roles. Tommy talked about his life in the classroom and dealing with growing children as the entire profession developed during his career in terms of discipline, resources and support within the education sector in the country. We discuss his current project, the development of the Island Theatre, in Ballinamore with a massive push to raise the €300,000 matched funding to complete the redevelopment of the community centre on the approach to the town from Carrick on Shannon. The interview was recorded just before Christmas and Tommy reminisced about the memories of the changes of Christmas over the years.
It's all about new opportunities this week in Leitrim as St. Mary's prepare for a final they might not have been expecting, Aine Tighe takes a leap of faith into the unknown and Manor Rangers U13 National cup odyssey continues with Mayo opposition. Today's episode is brought to you in association with Padraig King. Details on his 2 Day 'Switching off Anxiety and Stress' course are available on http://success.padraigking.com - Use Code LeitrimDaily for a 10% discount on the course. Leitrim Ladies star Aine Tighe joins us to chat about her next adventure with a professional contract with Women’s AFL side Freemantle for the 2020 season. She left to start pre-season with them this week and had a chat with Breifne before her departure. Leitrim U16 Football Manager Mark Heslin drops in to preview the start of the Fr Manning Cup competition with a fixture against Meath tomorrow at 3pm in Mohill. It’s the end to the Inter County scene for the season and the first stages for what will form next year’s County Minor side. Ahead of their League Final this weekend, St. Mary’s Manager Joseph Flynn joins Breifne to chat about his sides preparation for what is a slightly unexpected appearance in the Dunnes Bar Division 1 Final tomorrow. Alan Armstrong of Mohill shares what’s been happening in the Mohill camp who have been patiently waiting for this fixture for a few weeks since their own championship exit at the Semi Final stage. Manorhamilton Ranger’s coach Saoirse Cummins shares about her experience as a female coach and managing a boy’s underage team in the Sligo Leitrim league ahead of her U13’s national cup fixture tomorrow at home to Claremorris in the Bee Park at 2pm. Apologies to Carrick Rugby Club’s Dermot Foley who did join us this week but due to technical issues his interview isn’t included in the show today. We look forward to covering the club’s activities as their season progresses. The very best of luck to them in their league fixture away to Creggs tomorrow evening at 7:30pm.
2017 Footballer of the Year Andy Moran has announced his retirement from inter-county football. In a wide-ranging interview for ‘The Players Chair' with Richie Sadlier on the Second Captains World Service, the man with more appearances for Mayo than any other player has said that having discussed it with James Horan this weekend, he's made his decision to retire, and has told his team-mates that he will not return for another season. Moran won a National League title earlier this year, Mayo's first national title in 18 years. In between those two league wins the county had reached 10 national finals, three league and seven All-Irelands, including the 2016 replay. Andy was in the Mayo panel for them all, and only serious injury prevented him playing in all 10 – a cruciate injury that forced him to miss the 2012 All-Ireland, when he was the team captain. Over the course of a 16-year career, he became one of the totemic figures on a Mayo team that was the compelling story of the GAA world in this decade. He also spoke to Richie about becoming a father, losing his own Dad, Mayo's goldfish bowl, and the second-half collapse against Dublin in this year's All-Ireland semi-final. The interview will be released on the second Captains World Service tomorrow (Tuesday) morning, at 7am. Ken Hogan, Ger Cunnigham and Brian Hogan answer Anthony Daly's big question: should there be two referees in inter-county hurling?
My main topics for this episode are: The Ulster club football double header at Healy Park in Omagh, where Scotstown take on Coleraine at 1.30 and Gaoth Dobhair play Crossmaglen at 3.30 on Sunday. Rory McIlroy's announcement about scheduling only two European Tour events for 2019 and how the Irish Open could be one of the events that is not on his calendar, I also discuss his current situation around the possibility of changing his caddy. I preview the upcoming meeting of the All Blacks and Ireland at the Aviva in Dublin on Saturday night and the fact that this is a clash between the current top 2 teams in the world rugby rankings. Finally, I give my views on how prepared meals for Inter-County players is another way in which the gap is continually widening between the club and county player. My Twitter feed is the best place to continue the discussion or indeed contact me about topics you would like me include in an episode: https://twitter.com/GPK__ I hope everyone enjoys the podcast and don't forget to LIKE & SHARE, thanks. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ateachersstory/message
