How key are green jobs to tackling youth unemployment? And are we seeing more young people wanting to take on jobs that deliver social and environmental impact? Does it really matter how 'fair' the solutions to climate breakdown are? So long as we stop the worst of it, who cares whether a few people have their noses put out of joint, right? Or is that missing the point, as well as being a bit inhofe-y? Is it *only* possible to achieve the radical changes needed if those changes don't, for instance, make the poor poorer? The rather splended Environmental Justice Commission has been talking to people throughout the UK about all this and more, and its boss, Luke Murphy, joins us to chew it over. How can we tackle the climate crisis while levelling up?

With the COP26 global climate conference coming up later this year, we're spending five episodes this series looking at some of the biggest climate issues. In this episode we're talking about a just transition. Last week, the prime minister travelled to Coventry to set out his post-pandemic vision for the country. It was anticipated as a flagship moment for the government's ‘levelling up' agenda, but critics decried the speech as all talk, no action. This comes a month after the Committee on Climate Change said the UK is facing a similar problem when it comes to achieving our net zero targets: lots of ambition, but no detailed plans to get there. So, we need more action on tackling inequality and the climate crisis, but can we do both at the same time? How do we ensure communities aren't left behind in the move to a low-carbon economy? And what does a successful green transition actually look like for workers in high-carbon industries? Kirsty Styles is back in the presenting seat covering for Ayeisha. She's is joined by Luke Murphy, head of the environmental justice commission and associate director at the Institute for Public Policy Research, and Rebekah Diski, senior researcher at NEF. - For some similar themes, listen back to the episode with Alice Bell on Greenwashing https://soundcloud.com/weeklyeconomicspodcast/greenwashing - Find out more about IPPR's Environmental Justice Commission https://www.ippr.org/research/publications/fairness-and-opportunity - Read NEF's analysis on potential job losses in aviation https://neweconomics.org/2020/06/at-least-70-000-jobs-in-aviation-and-aviation-supply-chains-at-risk#entry:17302@1:url - Read NEF's report Powering the Just Transition https://neweconomics.org/2021/06/powering-the-just-transition ----- Music by Blue Dot Sessions and Podington Bear, used under Creative Commons licence. From Jul 28, 1914 until Nov 11, 1918 the iron dice of war rolled across the fields of Europe with a ferocity and magnitude the likes of which the world had never seen. In the smoke filled trenches of Guillement, and on the shell-illuminated wastes of Ypres a hellish vision of mechanised death manifested itself. In this, the 17th episode of Blúiríní Béaloidis, Claire Doohan and Jonny Dillon commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Armistice of November 11, 1918, the date which marks the cessation of hostilities between the Allies and Germany. In a break from their usual format, Claire and Jonny explore the war by focusing on the memoirs of those who lived through the experience first hand - either on the front, or back at home. Drawing on material from Coningsby Dawson's 'Glory of the Trenches', Mrs. Victor Rickard's 'The Stand of the Munsters at Etreux', Vera Brittain's 'Testament of Youth' and Ernst Jünger's 'Storm of Steel', along with selections of poetry and archival recordings from the National Folklore Collection, University College Dublin, this edition of Blúiríní Béaloidis honours the heroism and bravery of all of those men and women who were lost to this war. Luke never wanted to be a writer, in fact coming from Queec he wanted to be an NHL star. In the winter of 2000, after sustaining a season ending eye injury in hockey, Murphy took up a new hobby. After reading novels by his favorite authors: Greg Iles, Michael Connelly, Harlen Coben, among others, Murphy realized that he wanted to be like them - entertain readers and allow them, like when he read, to escape reality and for a moment be in another place and time. One day, with an idea in mind, he sat down at a computer and began writing. Murphy wrote a little everyday, around an intense rehabilitation schedule, and before he knew it he had completed his first manuscript. He continued to hobby write through the years, honing his craft, making time between work and family obligations. He constantly read, from novels in his favorite genres to books written by experts in the writing field. He continually researched, reading up on the industry and process. He made friends (published and unpublished authors), learning what it took to become successful. In 2006, after 10 years away, Murphy retired from hockey and moved back to his hometown. In the winter of 2007, Murphy began work on DEAD MAN'S HAND

One Thing Leads to Another is a working installation and multi-media performance, revolving around a overturned hot air balloon, reanimated through narrative, dance and shifting physicality. This project from artist Tamar Ettun will abstract vignettes from The Odyssey, taking the text's themes of labor, gifting and movement of the itinerant body, while incorporating dance traditions from Trisha Brown, Yvonne Rainer, and Ohad Naharin's GAGA. The performance, which will occur inside the inflated balloon, will last two hundred and forty minutes, referencing The Odyssey's 24 chapters. The audience can come and go as they like, and is encouraged to move inside and outside the balloon to witness the narrative evolve into an animate sculpture, featuring video projection, live music, and choreography from seven performers, including the artist. Performers will move from one end of the balloon to another, each making an effort to complete specific tasks while negotiating the physical impediment of others blocking their path. Once all tasks have been completed, all performers will rotate 90 degrees and repeat. Performers: Danielle Agami, Netta Yerushalmy, Luke Murphy, Yoni Kretzmer, Jaeeun Lee, Tamar Ettun. What was Old is New Again. A Meeting of Art and Scholarship | Conference Fri, 21.11.2008 – Sun, 23.11.2008 While many artists have employed aleatory elements in their work including ceramic effects, Chinese ink blot drawing and Cozens' blot technique, it has been in the 20th century that chance has become an overt aesthetic or anti-aesthetic strategy. At first with Duchamp, dada and Surrealism's psychic automatism and later with John Cage, chance and randomness have become part of the standard new tool box. But it is the use of random number generation that marks the dividing line between traditional art and digital work. Generative programs, sims, data visualization and other mimetic digital work represent the fountain head of the artist encountering the ability to simulate nature through computer generated random numbers. But to move further we need to examine what is the difference between computer generated random numbers, which are themselves a simulation and what it is to tap into the ultimate source of randomness. Concentrating on the clicks from a Geiger counter brings us into direct communion with the fabric of time and space. It is the sound of the raw material unconscious. Every religion, political ideology, philosophy, and scientific theory embodies a set of structured beliefs. These belief systems maintain a symbiotic liaison with the arts. Throughout history, communal beliefs have relied on music, theater, painting, and dance in order to propagate accepted doctrines, and the arts in turn have shaped the articles of faith. The conference brings together artists and scholars in an unusual forum. The arts addressed deal primarily with media, the major art form that has only come to the fore in recent decades. The scholarship concerns antique matters, such as Sumerian music, early Egyptian medicine, and the omens, codes of law, and creation myths of Mesopotamia. The divergent perspectives of the participants augur well for innovative ideas emerging from this close encounter between scholarship, the arts, and the belief systems of early and modern times.
