Well, you can't say we don't take you to some interesting places.  This week's episode is another in our Aussie Summer series here on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland Australia.  We are heading about 20 minutes inland from the beach to one of the most visited places in the area.  It is the picturesque village of Eumundi.  Eumundi is famous in Australia and with international visitors as it has the biggest Artisan market in the country, and it is just a gorgeous little village. The market's slogan is "make it, bake it, sew it grow it" – so there are no cheap overseas products to be found here. We take you down the shady tree-lined terraced avenues filled with every imaginable stall you can think of, including many delicious food vendors. We even do a quick impromptu interview with a nice guy who makes the best pineapple juice I have ever tasted. We also tell you about the very unique annual event that happens in Eumundi – it is the body art festival, which is Australia's premier body art event and is a celebration of the passionate body painting industry. Stay listening to the end when we leave Eumundi and drive 9km to a new lunch and dinner venue that is quickly becoming the hottest place on the Sunshine Coast.  It is called The Doonan, and we were left speechless by the whole place. If you would like to see the pictures I took as we walked around Eumundi or The Doonan or any of the links we mention – then click here www.beachtravelwine.com/podcast/89/eumundi --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/leanne-mccabe/message

The holiday season is in full swing and boutique windows are glittering on Rodeo Drive. So who better to talk to right now than the famed window dresser, Simon Doonan! When he was creative director at Barney's, Doonan never missed an opportunity for maximal effect with storefront displays that transformed fashion retail into spectacle. Now he is a writer and eminence on all things style-related – and he has released a new book about design at full volume.Maximalism: Bold, Bedazzled, Gold, and Tasseled Interiors, features lavish spaces around the world: from opulent Old World interiors to a Bel Air bedroom with no surface untouched, by Kelly Wearstler, the candy colored Trixie Motel in Palm Springs by Dani Dazey, and Doonan's own bedazzling New York apartment, designed by his husband Jonathan Adler.Guest host Frances Anderton talks with Doonan on the season-closer of Rodeo Drive - The Podcast about why you can never layer on too much, and how Maximalism is right at home in Los Angeles, dating “from Busby Berkeley to Tiny Naylor's coffee shop,” and on to today's spectacular concerts by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Harry Styles. “We live in such a visual world that minimal decor doesn't mean anything online or on your phone or on TikTok” says Doonan. “Everything has to be maximal, and LA is at the center of the culture in so many ways.”Doonan recalls an encounter with the larger-than-life Tony Duquette at his home Dawnridge, in Beverly Hills. Duquette, a prolific designer whose resume includes creating costumes and sets for Fred Astaire musicals, and making jewelry for Tom Ford in his eighties, filled his home and garden with antiques, chinoiserie, sunburst sculptures, gold-leafing, tapestries and cleverly upcycled trash. It was, says Doonan, an “unhinged visual extravaganza.”Doonan peppers the conversation with amusing insights. When asked if maximalism, or “maxi,” can ever become too messy, he says he will never judge, having fond memories of a childhood vacation at the blue collar Butlins holiday camp in the UK, which was “drenched in the fabulosity of maximalism.” He adds, “If somebody is happy, and their apartment looks like a good reflection of them, you do you, boo.” As for the ultra-rich who prefer battleship gray T-shirts over lavish displays of affluence, “one of the most hilarious things is when somebody becomes so wealthy that the only way they can find pleasure is to build a concrete bunker on a Swedish Island, and go and hide in it,” says Doonan. Finally, to those who believe minimalism is the path to happiness, he concludes: “I just think maximalism is more life affirming and maximalism doesn't need minimalism…Minimalism relies on maximalism to have something to denounce, whereas maximalism is much too big to fail.”Season 4 of Rodeo Drive – The Podcast is presented by the Rodeo Drive Committee with the support of The Hayman Family, Two Rodeo Drive, Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel, and the Beverly Hills Conference & Visitors Bureau.Season 4 Credits:Executive Producer and Host: Lyn WinterOn behalf of the Rodeo Drive Committee: Kathy GohariScriptwriter, Editorial Advisor and Guest Host: Frances AndertonEditor and Videographer: Hans FjellestadTheme music by Brian BanksProduction Assistant: Isabelle AlfonsoVisit the website: https://rodeodrive-bh.com/podcast/Join us on Instagram @rodeodrive Hosted on Acast. The Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) was created 40 years ago to help protect public employees and their beneficiaries against the financial hardships of old age and disability, to attract and retain a qualified public workforce, establish modest benefits, and achieve administrative savings. There is no doubt that the WRS has done that and more over the last four decades. But, the WRS, as one of the only fully funded public pension systems in the country, is more than just a retirement benefit for state and local government employees. It also provides a strong, steady economic pillar for the entire state. Economic gains attributable to defined benefit pensions like the WRS are substantial. Benefits paid by state and local pension plans support a significant amount of economic activity that ripples through the economy, creating a multiplier effect as one person's spending becomes another person's income. In Wisconsin, more than 85% of WRS pensions go to retirees living in Wisconsin who purchase goods and services and pay taxes. In this episode, we talk to Dan Doonan, executive director of the National Institute on Retirement Security, a non-profit research and education organization established to contribute to informed policymaking by fostering a deep understanding of the value of retirement security to employees, employers, and the economy as a whole. Dan shares some insights about what he calls "Pensionomics," and some recent studies his organization has conducted that show just how crucial the WRS and other defined benefit plans like it are to their local economic ecosystems.

Stephen and Luke discuss the training that goes into snake catching as well as the legal requirements to be a certified snake catcher in Australia. Carpet pythons and Eastern Brown snakes are the most common snakes encountered in Luke's work and Stephen and Luke discuss these animals and Luke's approach to catching these beautiful creatures. Stephen and Luke explore the relocation of these snakes and some of the scientific data surrounding repatriation. Lastly, Stephen and Luke converse about some of the biggest threats to their survival, which is somewhat of a surprise. The pair finish off with a suggestion of a new side job for Luke, venomous snake wrestling in the UK.   Snake catcher Luke Huntley shares what it's really like working as a snake catcher in QLD Australia. Snake calls come in at all hours of the day and night, from easy calls when there's a sleeping python to very dangerous eastern brown snakes that have been riled up by a person or animal. Luke describes how handling technique and experience play such an important role in making the job safer. People's attitudes towards snakes and how full on this lifestyle can be! Luke has been catching snakes for a large part of his life but has made a career out of it for 6 years now. It's lead to filming opportunities on shows like Bondi vet and of course having an exceptional local reputation and knowledge. Along with his conditioned penchant for productivity and strong focus from decades in corporate fashion at Barney's, Doonan embodies the essence of fashion - sharing stories of fashion icons through writing and making the most of every professional opportunity to highlight his passion for the industry. In his latest biography, Keith Haring, Doonan recounts the story of an icon who prioritized inclusivity and socially conscious art for the people - an approach Doonan seeks to carry out in his own work today. In this week's episode, Kirsten Holtz Naim and Simon Doonan sit down to discuss Doonan's new role as a ‘Simon Cowell' of crafting, how to channel inspiration for good writing, and what ‘art for everyone' looked like through fashion history from Haring to Basquiat. This week I'm joined by Carrigallen brothers Ken & Cormac Doonan ahead of their second time participating at the Malin 2 Mizen Cycle 4 CF (Cystic Fibrosis) this May and their fundraising event in Carthy's Lock 17 this Saturday evening. The brothers are joined on the show by Caroline Heffernan, a CF Advocate with Cystic Fibrosis, to tell us a little about the disease and the effect that these events and the funds they raise have on those who live with the disease. Ken talks about his cousin who has Cystic Fibrosis and when he went looking for an event to take part in after completing the Wicklow 200 so when he saw an advert for the Cycle4CF he decided to take part and with a little gentle persuasion he recruited Cormac to the adventure. A 640km cycle takes place from Malin Head to Mizen Head with 40 cyclists leaving Donegal on the the 7th May to raise funds for the charity stopping in Bundoran, Oranmore and Mallow before reaching the most southern point of the county four days later on the 10th March. Caroline, herself living with CF, tells us about the improvements in medication, resources and grants which have hugely improved the quality of life of patients as well as extending the life expectancy of sufferers across the country. Cormac & Ken tell us about their fundraising efforts with a night of music and entertainment with 'Bite The Bullet' in Carthy's Bar, Leitrim Village this Saturday evening, 22nd February 2020. “Never did I think I'd be showcasing health and hope in a bikini — as a grandma!” Angela Doonan beat cancer and lost 100 pounds. She talks to Carey about how she lost the weight and had a total life transformation. Today we hear her incredible story about being a two-time cancer survivor and mother. Angela's daughter was born with a rare brain disorder, Joubert's syndrome, which left her daughter, Samantha, needing total care, wheelchair bound, and non-verbal. Angela said when she had her daughter she fell in love and decided to give her the most amazing life possible. Samantha's laughter “would light up a room. She was full of life and personality.” During this time and at only 26 years old, Angela was diagnosed with inoperable non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Her only choice, she says, was to fight. She was a mom and that's what she had to do. Her son was just 7 and her daughter only 4. Fighting meant Angela would be left with significant kidney issues and heart failure from the treatment, but she had kids and had to keep going. The hardest thing Angela had to face as a parent was not being able to help Samantha when she went into complete renal failure and was given three months to live. Angela couldn't “fix it”. It was only much later when she would realize, “We all have purpose. Our lives continually touch each other.” Her darkest day was losing her thirteen-year-old daughter on April 2, 2006. During this time, Angela was dealing with all the effects of chemo from her own cancer fight. She was struggling with obesity, high blood pressure, heart failure, a thyroid condition, fatty liver and other health conditions from her treatment. And she was diagnosed with cancer – for the second time. After losing her daughter she didn't have the desire to fight. But when Angela closed her eyes, she would see her daughter and think, “how dare I”? She thought of Samantha and the challenges she had bravely fought for thirteen years. Angela said she would visualize and remember how much her daughter loved her. It was her daughter's love and encouragement that made her get up, not give up. With failing health, Angela decided through her tears to keep going. She started by walking, then hiking, then lifting weights. She slowly became a showcase of health as a bodybuilder… as a grandma. “Now I am healthy from the inside out.” Angela started grazing, eating smaller meals throughout the day. She made small changes, replacing fruits and nuts for sugary sweets. She learned as she went, researching on the internet, and lost over 100 pounds. In 2014, her angiogram showed her once failing heart had actually created new natural bypasses. Angela had learned health redemption. She had taught herself how to eat and to move every day. “Exercise is a powerful medicine'” says Angela. She feels strong emotionally, great physically and is blessed to be able to share her story with others. She believes everyone can be stronger, together, by sharing their stories. Now cancer free and healthy, Angela Doonan has a powerful story to share with others about a mother's love. South Chelsea’s incarnation of Boston’s Barcelona-style tapas bar features an eclectic menu focusing on both traditional and modern tapas, combining regional Spanish flavors and techniques with local and market-fresh ingredients. The Spanish-focused beverage program from Caitlin Doonan features a cocktail menu with a dedicated section of Gin Tonic variations like Nuestra Casa with Oxley gin, allspice and pear and Atencion Gratuita with Bols Genever gin, thyme and lavender, sherry-centric cocktails like Sherry Julep with Amontillado sherry, curaçao and mint, and others such as Verdad y Amor with tequila, hibiscus and ginger and the Rosarita’s Fire with mezcal, pomegranate and cava. The wine list emphasizes Spain and the old world, with a focus on small producers and growers, and features an extensive sherry section. Additionally, seasonal sangrias are available on tap, along with a selection of beer.
