Olive McGloin and Darrell Johnson don't seem content with straightforward thru-hikes, they tend to go for the YOYO. That is: they turn around and head back the way they've come to complete double thrus in a season. Olive has YOYO'd the Triple Crown, with Darrell almost complete in that endeavor. Their remarkable story has, I'm afraid, been beset by some technical difficulties on my part, but their story is so fascinating that I wanted to tell it. You can follow along with their adventures through Instagram at Instagram (@oudarrell) Mark Carpenter returns to the show with his reflections on his 2023 thru-hike after the benefit of a couple of months back home. This week, Organic Matters speaks to Seán McGloin, the network manager of the National Organic Training Skillnet (NOTS). Organic farming has an EU target of reaching 25% by 2030 and Seán discusses the opportunities and challenges facing farmers in reaching those targets, including the need to develop better markets for organic products. In the case of Ireland, a large proportion of farmers are in organic conversion and urgently need markets in eighteen months.
The Times-Tribune politics reporter Borys Krawczeniuk breaks down the Primary election by taking a look at what happened to Jerry Notarianni and if reassessment was to blame.Borys also digs into the emergence of Bill Gaughan onto the Lackawanna County stage, what Matt McGloin is going to need to learn to be a commissioner, and how local voters sought change and younger leadership.Over the past several years Borys has been tracking a change in voter registration in Lackawanna County and Pennsylvania. The increase in the number of registered Republicans and a drop in the number of registered Democrats may have NEPA shifting toward purple instead of blue.We also ask Borys about the changes voters made to the Scranton School Board, the re-emergence of Nibs Loughney in Dunmore, the first new mayor in Carbondale in almost 20 years, and what we can expect in November. You can subscribe to the News Engine Podcast wherever you get your favorite podcasts. It seems like forever since we saw a full weekend of sporting action across the county but with the start of the Senior and Intermediate Football Championships this weekend we finally have some sport to review on the show. On today's show we catch up with Fenagh Manager Joe Flynn after his side had three points to spare in a 2-12 to 2-9 victory over his former team St. Mary's Kiltoghert on Saturday evening. Championship new boys Leitrim Gaels saw off the challenge of last season's semi finalists Melvin Gaels in their first ever game at the top table. A final score of 1-15 to 1-07 saw the home side record the most comfortable margin of victory of the entire weekend. Their first scorer Eunan Tracey and manager Mal Guckian spoke to Breifne after the game while the Kinlough side's Killian McGloin shared his disappointment with the performance and the result. Mohill went down by a single point to 2019 finalists Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins 0-16 to 0-15. Ballinamore selector Adrian Smith recaps the game. In the final game Allen Gaels were beaten by Glencar/Manor 1-12 to 0-08. That entire game is available to view at www.leitrimgaa.ie In the Intermediate grade Annaduff emerge successfully from their opening night clash with Kiltubrid. Three late unanswered points saw them overturn a deficit to a single point victory, 0-10 to 0-9, in Cloone on Friday night. Annaduff's Dillon Keane and Kiltubrid manager Ciaran McTague are on the show with their thoughts on how the game went. Francis Davitt spoke to Seamus Gallagher after his Drumkeerin team had a comfortable 1-16 to 0-10 victory in Eslin while only a point seperated Ballinaglera and Bornacoola. The North Leitrim side winning at home 2-15 to 2-14 on the shores of Lough Allen. Gortletteragh held on to a slender two point lead despite a second half rally from Dromohair. The final score was 2-11 to 2-09 to Gortletteragh. In soccer the final game of the weekend was the Sligo Leitrim Superleague clash between Manor Rangers and Carbury. The table topping fixture ended 1-1 after Aaron Hickey's early header for the Manorhamilton side was cancelled out when Aaron Murrin's cross found the back of the net just a few minutes later. Both sides had opportunities to snatch a victory which would have put them into the driving seat for the league title but both goalkeepers proved on top of their game to leave the scores even at the final whistle. This result gives the advantage in the league title race to the Sligo side but with a number of games left any slip ups will be pounced on. Goalscorer Aaron Hickey and player/manager Thomas McDonald join us on the show today.
Once again we are reminded of the importance of representation to get a good self esteem. In this episode, hear Bailie McGloin share her journey from struggling to accept her skin condition Vitiligo, to now providing the representation she missed when growing up, by modelling for big brands.

He proposes that the Government should take the advice of the WHO Executive Director, Dr. Michael Ryan to protect our citizens and act now to protect our citizens. Breifne also speaks to Dr. Alan Loftus (17:30), a GP based in Drumshanbo, about the impact the pandemic and the hysteria around it has had on the day to day running of a health centre in the county. He shares very simple advice on when and how to engage your doctor if you are concerned in any way about your own health. He also mentions the importance of looking out for mental health concerns in our communities with the nature of isolation in the coming weeks and months. Finally, the Chairman of Leitrim County Council, Enda McGloin (32:00), joins Breifne to discuss the reality of how the County Council is conducting it's work, having closed it's offices to the public and moving all services to phone and online. Details are available on their social media accounts and websites. Cllrs Enda McGloin & Mary Bohan join Breifne Earley for a discussion on the pressing issues of the day including their disagreement detailed on the front page of the Leitrim Observer this week with respect to the now cancelled RIC commemoration. Laughing off the difference of opinion they got down to discussing the important concerns for the council and the people of the county. During this week's show they talk about the Border Region Stimulus package worth €28 which will initially offer the Local Enterprise Office €500,000 for local businesses and have other opportunities and benefits for the brexit affected companies in the county and the border region. Finally both Cllr Bohan and McGloin offer their opinions on the upcoming general election and who's likely to be in the shake up for seats whenever the election does take place.
Ahead of the Leitrim's Health is Wealth event on February 12th, Breifne talks to some of the people involved in the night promoting positive mental health in Co. Leitrim. Speaking at the launch back in November on board The Rose of Innisfree on Lough Gill, organisers Hubert McHugh and Valerie Cogan discuss the event, the origin of the idea and how important this event is to the entire discussion about mental health which is happening in our county and country. Chairman of Leitrim County Council, Enda McGloin speaks to Leitrim Daily about how important it is to be open and discuss our own mental health concerns so that we might be able to look out for others in our communities. Entertainer Sandy Kelly spoke to us about the importance of breaking the stigma surrounding suicide in our society. Having lost her own sister in recent times she spoke very openly about her own experience and the importance of events like this for the entire population. Nuala and Mary from North West Hospice, one of the partners of the event, shared their experience of caring for those who need help in our society and the crossover between the various health care groups and strands within the North West region. They spoke about the importance of supporting all aspects of our health, both physical and mental, and how funds raised from the fundraising raffle on the 12th February will support the work of the hospice.
This week we're taking a closer look at the launch of the annual publication, The Leitrim Guardian, which launched at a gala ball last Sunday afternoon in the Landmark Hotel, Carrick on Shannon. Breifne Earley is joined by the editor of the journal, Dr. Blaithin Gallagher, to discuss the process involved in creating the annual compendium where every piece of content is related to the events and happenings around the county. Committee chairman Tommy Moran speaks about the history of the journal, now in it's 52nd edition and the very high profile award of Leitrim Person of the Year. The inductee of that particular title for 2020, Drumshanbo's Noel McPartland, shares his thoughts and emotions on being surrounded by friends and family to share in the awarding of the honour on him. Enda McGloin, Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council, tells us about the importance of these books for the history of the county. Dr. Declan Loftus, Paschal Mooney and Seamus O'Rourke tell stories of their own years in the role and their advice for the hugely experienced, newly selected holder of the title.
In this episode, ASNT Editor Haley Cowans talks with 2018–2019 ASNT President Scott P. Cargill and incoming President Michael V. McGloin about accomplishments of the past year, what to look forward to in the coming year, and what advice they might have for attendees of the upcoming Annual Conference. Attendees of this year’s conference can see Cargill pass the presidential collar to McGloin during the Awards Banquet held on Wednesday, November 20.
This week we’re joined by Leitrim GAA PRO Declan Bohan. We’ll also be chatting to Sean Gallagher of Manorhamilton Rangers and Cillian McGloin who’s looking to defend his county U20 title with Melvin Gaels. Declan Bohan joins Breifne Earley to look back at the successes of the past year, both on and off the playing pitches for the organisation in Leitrim. Promotion from Division 4, Lory Meagher Hurling Championship success and the opening of the new Centre of Excellence facility in Annaduff were just some of the highlights for the sport in the county this year. They also chat about the future for Leitrim GAA with major change on the cards for the makeup of the county committee at the annual convention next month. Sean Gallagher, Asst Manager of Manorhamilton Rangers, joins Breifne to chat about their season so far, with an unbeaten record in the league but disappointment in the FAI Junior Cup. The club are excited about their developing squad as their youth teams are starting to generate more players for their senior side as they chase their first ever Sligo / Leitrim Superleague title. Finally Cillian McGloin talks about his mindset as he looks forward to defending the U20 county championship title that his Melvin Gaels side secured last year. The novelty of being the defending captain of an underage title comes up along with the pressures put on players between schools, colleges, club and county at this time of year.
This week the county has been discussing the arrival of a new property tax increase approved by the county council. Council Chairman Enda McGloin joins Breifne to discuss the logic behind it and the progress it will encourage within the county. Cllr McGloin talks about the current opportunities for the County Council to obtain government funding for development projects. Each of those projects require matched funding from the council coffers which at the current levels of property tax income just don't exist at the moment. Enda talks about a number of projects which have missed out on government funding for a variety of reasons including not being 'shovel ready' with planning permission approved and matched funding available. This tax increase should make those situations fewer and far between across the county and enable projects like the SLNCR and Cavan Leitrim Greenway projects become closer to reality. He showcases the development of tourism numbers and tourism related businesses in the Drumshanbo area since the advent of the Shannon Blueway from Leitrim Village along the Lough Allen Canal and talks about how similar projects in Waterford and Mayo have proven the concept and how Leitrim towns will benefit from similar projects. 95% of Leitrim homeowners will see a small property tax increase of €13.50 or €33.75 (to €103.50 & €258.75) depending on which band they fall in. A further 3% will see their rate rise by €47.25 (to €362.25), with only 2% of the county's homeowners (properties worth more than €200,000) seeing a larger increase. Colm Keane of the Leitrim Enterprise Fund also joins Breifne to discuss the Josie Martin Scholarship programme which closes for applications on Monday. First year third level students can apply to their local credit union and be entered into a draw for a cash prize of €1,000. This scholarship offer is open to current and new credit union members regardless of the length of their membership.

Breifne Earley talks to players and coaches from each of the fixtures played over the weekend. In other other Semi Final Mohill and Ballinamore will lock horns after defeating Aughawillan and Drumreilly respectively. Hannah Johnston and her U18 Connacht Rugby team-mates were beaten by Ulster in the Inter Provincial Championship Semi Final by Ulster as Sligo RFC First Team secured a top 2 finish in the Men's Connacht Senior League with a victory over Corinthians to set up a possible first league title win with the final game next week against Galwegians. Finally we take a look at the two minor finals played last weekend, In the Ladies U18 final between Allen Gaels and St. Felim's in Cloone. This week Breifne is joined by another two members of Leitrim County Council to go through the pressing issues of the day. Chairman of the County Council, Cllr Enda McGloin (Fine Gael) & Cllr Felim Gurn (Independent) are discussing the Forestry issue, the EU Mercosur Trade Deal and the rising cost of insurance. First, Enda McGloin is asked about the vacancy created by the withdrawal of Gerry Reynolds from the Fine Gael nomination for the general election, and he speaks about his ambition to seek the nomination. Felim reminds us of the impact of 90,000 tons of Brazilian beef into the EU will have on Irish farmers while Enda and Felim discuss the situation with the serious shortage of respite care for those with special needs across the county. With the news of local events cancelled due to the cost of insurance, Enda spoke about the work done by Pearse Doherty TD to expose the claims made by the insurance companies to explain increased premiums. A viral video early this week showed the deputy quizzing the CEO's of the major firms and destroyed their entire argument in a matter of minutes. Cllr Gurn suggested that people who make fraudulent claims must be pursued and prosecuted. The new traffic management scheme with the one way system on Park Lane and the Leitrim Road in Carrick on Shannon will become permanent in the coming weeks. Cllr McGloin spoke of the requirement to seriously consider the impact of the current traffic situation and the pros and cons of building a bypass.

Irish woman, Olive McGloin, became the first woman in the world to walk the Pacific Crest Trail, from the borders of Mexico to Canada and back again, non-stop in 2014. (It’s the same 2,650-mile route (one way) that Reese Witherspoon’s character walks some 1,000 miles of in the film Wild.) She encountered deadly snakes, mountain lions, severe storms and extreme heat on her journey. And she didn't stop there. Since her successful YoYo of the PCT, Olive has taken on a number of equally impressive challenges.

Nursing demands critical thinking skills to respond effectively within a rapidly changing healthcare environment. The future nurse requires openness, creativity, skills of enquiry; knowledge, reflexivity and the confidence to further develop clinical practice (Gopee 2002; Knowles & McGloin 2007). Hence the nurse must evidence competence in academic skills and the research process. This presentation will discuss the implementation of an acute care module within a new adult nursing curriculum at University Campus Suffolk (UCS). This was the first time a module had been delivered in the adult branch using a substantial amount of e learning. The project design aimed to encourage the development of the critical thinking skill set. It aimed to empower, support and motivate the student to be a responsible, engaged learner.

"Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" is the second episode of the of the British science fiction television series , which first aired on in the UK on 8 September 2012. It was written by and directed by . The episode featured alien time traveller () and his companions () and () accompanied by Rory's father Brian (), (), and John Riddell, an English big-game hunter (). The group landed on a large spaceship that contains dinosaurs. Contents Plot When in Egypt with , receives a call about a spaceship which will crash into Earth in six hours. Taking Nefertiti with him, he picks up Edwardian explorer John Riddell and his and ten months after he last saw them in "", accidentally taking Rory's father Brian on the as well. They land on the spaceship and come face-to-face with dinosaurs. The Doctor and his companions discover that the ship is a ark designed to carry the reptilian humanoids to a new planet along with flora and fauna from their time period. After escaping from a group of , the Doctor, Rory, and Brian are escorted by two robots to a human called Solomon who was injured in a raptor attack. Solomon, who had boarded the spaceship and killed its inhabitants in order to sell the dinosaurs on board, threatens the Doctor into repairing his legs and into giving him Queen Nefertiti after seeing her value. Missiles are fired from Earth to stop the ship from crashing. The Doctor disables Solomon's robots and rescues Nefertiti before he tricks the missiles into targeting Solomon's ship and detaching it from the Silurian ark. Meanwhile, Rory and Brian pilot the ark away from the Earth. The Doctor then takes the Ponds back home after letting Brian view the Earth from orbit. The episode ends after showing that Brian Williams has now taken to travelling across the planet. Production Showrunner said that putting dinosaurs on a spaceship was "the secret of success". The idea to use dinosaurs in Doctor Who came from the special effects teams and Millennium FX. As "" was a darker opening episode, "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" is more about fun. In Moffat's pitch to writer , he proposed, "Maybe it's a ship heading towards Earth, and Earth is on alert". Chibnall had previously written the Doctor Who episodes "" (2007), ""/"" (2010), as well as work for the spinoff series . The Doctor had previously encountered dinosaurs in the 1974 serial . Chibnall suggested including a "bonkers" gang of characters picked from around time and space. He felt that Doctor Who could have "collisions of characters that no other show in the world can do", and that it was about finding a "disparate" group of characters who would "bounce" off each other. Chibnall asked to introduce Rory's father, as Amy and Rory would be leaving and Rory's family life had not been explored yet. , who played an Edwardian hunter in this episode, previously worked with Moffat on the BBC series . 's character, Solomon, was modelled on a "well-known nightclub owner with long hair". Chibnall described him as "half businessman, half pirate". "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" and the following episode, "", were the first episodes to be produced for the seventh series, both directed by . The two episodes are Metzstein's first Doctor Who credits. The production team had to be mindful of the series' budget when planning the effects and sets; Chibnall commented that "it would be very easy to spend £300m on this but we don't have it". As such, the dinosaurs could not dominate the episode, and Chibnall had to tell "a big other' story". The episode contains one of the biggest sets ever built for the show. Some scenes were also filmed at beach, in late February 2012. The beach had previously been used as "Bad Wolf Bay" in "" (2006) and "" (2008), and as the planet Alfava Metraxis in ""/"" (2010). A preview clip of the episode was released at the 2012 . Smith had to wear padded trousers when riding the dinosaurs, and recalled it was "a painful couple of hours, a laugh though and definitely worth it". The dinosaurs in the episode were built from scratch, and are a variety of "favourites". References ^ Edwards, Richard (15 July 2012). . SFX.
