Disrupting Taxes with Thomas J. Cryan

Thomas J. Cryan joins us to discuss his new book Disrupting Taxes. He highlights how tariffs historically served as the primary source of U.S. federal revenue until the Civil War, after which income taxes took over. He criticizes the current tax system for its heavy reliance on individual salaries and argued for a more efficient, technology-driven approach. We also touch on the national debt, the need for a balanced budget, and concerns about government spending. Thomas advocates for a system that automatically adjusts tax rates to match expenditures.  We discuss... Thomas J. Cryan shares his background as a writer, attorney, and entrepreneur with a focus on law and economics. Cryan discusses his book Disrupting Taxes, inspired by the upcoming expiration of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in 2025. The conversation shifts to the historical role of tariffs, particularly how they funded the U.S. government for its first 70 years. The current tax system disproportionately burdens individuals, with 90% of federal revenue coming from salaries and income. Cryan critiques the self-declaratory nature of income tax, arguing it leads to inefficiencies and inequities. He proposes a 1% automated banking transaction tax to replace income tax and eliminate the IRS. This system would tax all banking transactions equally, spreading the burden more fairly across the economy. A proposed tax system would implement a flat 2% transaction tax, significantly lower than current income tax rates. Government transactions would also be taxed, eliminating loopholes and ensuring transparency in spending versus tax collection. While the system removes the IRS in its current form, some technological oversight would still be needed for enforcement. Low tax rates could discourage avoidance, as the effort to evade 1% taxation may not be worth the hassle. The U.S. tax system must consider global competition to remain economically viable. Tariffs can be an economic tool but may create global trade imbalances and diplomatic tensions. A technology-driven transaction tax system could increase efficiency and fairness over time. Free market principles suggest that supply and demand will eventually create equilibrium despite policy shifts. State and local governments operate under different tax systems, creating challenges in integrating federal tax changes. Broadening the tax base at all levels could lead to lower rates and a fairer system overall. States with high income taxes may consider adopting transaction-based taxation models. Leading the way is none other than world-renowned neuroscientist Professor John Cryan of University College Cork, whose pioneering work has helped uncovered the powerful link between the gut microbiome and mental health and behaviour. Co-hosted by one of Europe's leading neurosurgeons, Peter Vajkoczy, this is one episode you won't want to miss. So, sit back and buckle up as we navigate the neural pathways that connect our gut to our brain, and discover how this connection plays a critical role in a wide range of conditions, from mental disorders to degenerative diseases. We'll delve into Professor Cryan's cutting-edge research, exploring the diseases his team in Cork are targeting and the innovative delivery systems they're developing to make genetic changes in the brain. You'll also hear about the forces that shape our microbiota throughout our lives, from the importance of vaginal birth and breast milk to the relationship between stress, dementia and depression, and the impact of diet on social behaviour, cognitive decline and aging, and mental health. We'll also explore the exciting new field of psychobiotics, which Cryan covers in his bestselling book, “The Psychobiotic Revolution: Mood, Food and the New Science of the Gut-Brain Connection”. Prepare to be amazed by the potential future treatments for neurological and mental health conditions through the lens of microbiota and neuroscience. Ringo on the bongos! That's right, it's "You're Going to Lose That Girl" by The Beatles. John is at his snarly best in this number, and George & Paul provide some nice call-and-response. Anyways, the bongos and lyrics are our main focus, as they should be. And who sings "yeah" better?! - no one's better than the Beatles, there. The second version comes from The Villagers, a Zone Press Variation that comes from Florida - it's garage and great! Next up is Chicago's Cryan' Shames and who's gonna argue with a band whose lead singer is Toad? And it's about time we discussed JC Hooke, a hook-handed percussionist rival to Moulty! In 1971, Canada's Five Man Electrical Band did it and It's Absolutely Right - a post-Sgt. Pepper homage, a la ELO. The final word goes to Dwight Twilley, who covered the song in 2009 and it's a celebration. As it should be. Yeah!

The overall cost of a Fourth of July cookout is down compared to last year, but as Michael Clements reports food prices are still at a record high. Capps: Hello and happy Independence Day! Welcome to this episode of Tennessee Home and farm radio – I'm Thomas Capps. That hamburger and hotdog you're eating today costs little less than it did a year ago. But as Michael Clements reports – food prices are still up. Clements: The cost of an Independence Day cookout for a family of ten this year is $67.73, according to the 2023 American Farm Bureau Federation marketbasket survey. AFBF Chief Economist Roger Cryan says the latest survey shows inflation is still impacting food prices. Cryan: The prices we collected show that the price of a July Fourth picnic is down three percent this year compared to last year. That's still 14 percent higher than it was two years ago and this year's basket is the second highest in the history of the survey. But it's important to remember that that still means the cost of a July Fourth cookout comes out to less than $7 per person. Clements: Cryan says the price changes largely follow the weather and economics of agriculture and food production. Cryan: This year we saw increases in the price of hamburger buns, beef, and potato salad, while there were drops in the cost of chicken breast, lemonade and cookies. Some of the factors that impacted some of the increases included drought across much of the West and Midwest, which increased the cost of feed for cattle, and it drove up the price of ground beef. Poor weather also led to a smaller potato crop this year and overall inflation is driving up the cost of processed foods like hamburger buns. Clements: In a global perspective, Cryan says the survey is good news for consumers, thanks to U.S. farmers and ranchers. Cryan: Americans spend a smaller percentage of their income on food than people in any other country and that's thanks to a vibrant farm sector, supported by a strong Farm Bill program. And we should understand that when prices go up, it doesn't mean farmers are getting a windfall. When prices go up, it's usually because their costs have gone up, and farmers only get 14 percent of the retail food dollar. Clements: Learn more at fb.org/news. Micheal Clements, Washington.

Processed food intake has been on the rise since the industrial revolution. Today, more than 70% of available food in the US is processed. Even with the best of intentions – world hunger, stunting, blindness – food manufacturers got one major thing wrong. Most ultra-processed food is devoid of essential nutrients – vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients – necessary for a healthy life. More than 90% of the American population is deficient in at least one essential nutrient. Malnutrition in a developing nation may lead to stunting or death because of a lack of food access and acute healthcare. But in the United States, in most cases, we have access to food and acute care facilities. Instead, we see malnutrition play out as chronic diseases. This touches every phase of the lifespan – including pregnancy – and leads to decades of reduced quality of life and increased financial burden that affects generations. It comes as no surprise that chronic diseases continue to rise. And this generation is now facing them much earlier in life, even at the peak of child-bearing years. This is why the concept of the first 1000 days – from conception to 2 years of life – is so important. We have to get it right. Even though I approach this work as a nutritional scientist, I'm also a mother. I know that sometimes it's hard to meet the demands of life and feed my family fresh food every day. I'm forced to make a choice from what is available – I'm sure you can relate. But parents, like you and me, are demanding better. Consumers know there is a better option. Can cocoa consumption help us age better? Medical College of Georgia, Sept. 14, 2021 Whether consuming cocoa, known to be packed with powerful antioxidants that protect our cells from damage, helps us age better, is a question scientists want to definitively answer. The COSMOS Trial (COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study), led by investigators at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, gathered data from 21,444 men and women looking at the impact of a cocoa extract supplement and/or multivitamins on common health problems, most of which increase with age. Dong and his colleagues will be looking specifically at aging, including so called “inflammaging,” and epigenetic aging, both considered good indicators of our biological age. Rather than just looking at the year you were born, biological age also takes into account key factors that impact your function and health, like genetics and lifestyle. He also has more standard aging measures on these individuals, like blood pressure and cognitive function tests. (NEXT) Psychobiotics as a novel strategy for alleviating anxiety and depression Jiangnan University (China), September 10, 2021 As an important ‘microbial organ', the gut microbiota directly participates in nutrient metabolism and peripheral immune regulation and even distantly affects brain functions and behaviours. This review provides an overview of recent discoveries regarding how the gut microbiota influences anxiety and depression and aims to establish the key signalling pathways between the gut microbiota and the brain. Finally, the psychobiotic strategy for treating mood disorders is discussed, covering both pre-clinical and clinical studies. Psychobiotic treatment could provide a novel therapeutic approach to treat anxiety and depression. In recent years, the gut microbiota has been viewed as a physiological control centre that is linked to the host's immune system, hormonal system, nervous system, or other physiological pathways. Until now, many studies have revealed the inextricable relationship between the gut microbiome and the brain, especially its participation in the regulation of memory, mood, and behaviour (Cryan et al., 2019b). (NEXT) Further evidence that vitamin D might protect against severe COVID-19 disease and death Trinity College (Ireland) and University of Edinburgh, September 16, 2021 New research from Trinity College and University of Edinburgh has examined the association between vitamin D and COVID-19, and found that ambient ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (which is key for vitamin D production in the skin) at an individual's place of residence in the weeks before COVID-19 infection, was strongly protective against severe disease and death. Researchers, for the first time, looked at both genetically-predicted and UVB-predicted vitamin D level. Almost half a million individuals in the UK took part in the study, and ambient UVB radiation before COVID-19 infection was individually assessed for each participant. When comparing the two variables, researchers found that correlation with measured vitamin D concentration in the circulation was three-fold stronger for UVB-predicted vitamin D level, compared to genetically-predicted. (NEXT) Study: Eating yogurt can help older adults with high blood pressure University of Maine, September 13, 2021 Yogurt consumption can help lower blood pressure in older adults with elevated levels, according to a new study led by an international team, including researchers at the University of Maine. The MSLS team examined the relationship between yogurt consumption and bloodpressure among older adults with and without high blood pressure. Statistical analyses revealed modest but statistically significant reductions in systolic blood pressure among those with high blood pressure who consumed yogurt. (NEXT) Comprehensive review of antioxidants and common arterial condition University of Connecticut, September 13, 2021 Nutritional science graduate student Chelsea Garcia and associate professor Christopher Blesso recently published an article in Free Radical Biology and Medicine outlining the research to date on a type of antioxidant called anthocyanins and its impact on atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis occurs when fats and cholesterol build up along the artery walls. This can restrict blood flow and cause blood clots. This condition is associated with oxidative stress, a process our bodies undergo throughout our lifetime as they encounter free radicals. These oxygen-containing molecules are highly reactive and unstable. They occur when a molecule gains or loses an electron. The unpaired electron on the free radical can react with other molecules and cause age-related harms in the body. (NEXT) Blueberry and soluble fiber improve serum antioxidant and adipokine biomarkers and lipid peroxidation in pregnant women with obesity University of Nevada, September 10, 2021 According to news originating from the University of Nevada research stated, “Pregnancies affected by obesity are at high risk for developing metabolic complications with oxidative stress and adipocyte dysfunction contributing to the underlying pathologies.” We conducted an 18 gestation-week randomized controlled trial to examine the effects of a dietary intervention comprising of whole blueberries and soluble fiber vs. control (standard prenatal care) on biomarkers of oxidative stress/antioxidant status and adipocyte and hormonal functions in pregnant women with obesity (* * n* * = 34). DR. BRYAN ARDIS, DR. REINER FUELLMICH AND DR. WOLFGANG WODARG   Strawberries improve cognition in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of older adults Tufts University, August 8, 2021 According to news originating from Boston, Massachusetts, research stated, “Functional changes in the brain during ageing can alter learning and memory, gait and balance - in some cases leading to early cognitive decline, disability or injurious falls among older adults. Dietary interventions with strawberry (SB) have been associated with improvements in neuronal, psychomotor and cognitive functions in rodent models of ageing.” Our news journalists obtained a quote from the research from Tufts University, “We hypothesised that dietary supplementation with SB would improve mobility and cognition among older adults. In this study, twenty-two men and fifteen women, between the ages of 60 and 75 years, were recruited into a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in which they consumed either freeze-dried SB (24 g/d, equivalent to two cups of fresh SB) or a SB placebo for 90 d. Participants completed a battery of balance, gait and cognitive tests at baseline and again at 45 and 90 d of intervention. Significant supplement group by study visit interactions were observed on tests of learning and memory. Participants in the SB group showed significantly shorter latencies in a virtual spatial navigation task (P = 0.020,.p2 = 0.106) and increased word recognition in the California Verbal Learning test (P = 0.014,.p2 = 0.159) across study visits relative to controls. However, no improvement in gait or balance was observed.” According to the news editors, the research concluded: “These findings show that the addition of SB to the diets of healthy, older adults can improve some aspects of cognition, but not gait or balance, although more studies with a larger sample size and longer follow-up are needed to confirm this finding.” This research has been peer-reviewed.   Growing evidence of vitamin K benefits for heart health Edith Cowan University (Australia), August 10, 2021 New Edith Cowan University (ECU) research has found that people who eat a diet rich in vitamin K have up to a 34 percent lower risk of atherosclerosis-related cardiovascular disease (conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels). Researchers examined data from more than 50,000 people taking part in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health study over a 23-year period. They investigated whether people who ate more foods containing vitamin K had a lower risk of cardiovascular disease related to atherosclerosis (plaque build-up in the arteries). There are two types of vitamin K found in foods we eat: vitamin K1 comes primarily from green leafy vegetables and vegetable oils while vitamin K2 is found in meat, eggs and fermented foods such as cheese. The study found that people with the highest intakes of vitamin K1 were 21 percent less likely to be hospitalized with cardiovascular disease related to atherosclerosis. For vitamin K2, the risk of being hospitalized was 14 percent lower. This lower risk was seen for all types of heart disease related to atherosclerosis, particularly for peripheral artery disease at 34 percent. ECU researcher and senior author on the study Dr. Nicola Bondonno said the findings suggest that consuming more vitamin K may be important for protection against atherosclerosis and subsequent cardiovascular disease. "Current dietary guidelines for the consumption of vitamin K are generally only based on the amount of vitamin K1 a person should consume to ensure that their blood can coagulate," she said. "However, there is growing evidence that intakes of vitamin K above the current guidelines can afford further protection against the development of other diseases, such as atherosclerosis. "Although more research is needed to fully understand the process, we believe that vitamin K works by protecting against the calcium build-up in the major arteries of the body leading to vascular calcification." University of Western Australia researcher Dr. Jamie Bellinge, the first author on the study, said the role of vitamin K in cardiovascular health and particularly in vascular calcification is an area of research offering promising hope for the future. "Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death in Australia and there's still a limited understanding of the importance of different vitamins found in foodand their effect on heart attacks, strokes and peripheral artery disease," Dr. Bellinge said. "These findings shed light on the potentially important effect that vitamin K has on the killer disease and reinforces the importance of a healthy diet in preventing it." Dr. Bondonno said that while databases on the vitamin K1 content of foods are very comprehensive, there is currently much less data on the vitamin K2 content of foods. Furthermore, there are 10 forms of vitamin K2 found in our diet and each of these may be absorbed and act differently within our bodies. "The next phase of the research will involve developing and improving databases on the vitamin K2 content of foods. "More research into the different dietary sources and effects of different types of vitamin K2 is a priority," Dr. Bondonno said. Additionally, there is a need for an Australian database on the vitamin K content of Australian foods (e.g. vegemite and kangaroo). To address this need, Dr. Marc Sim, a collaborator on the study, has just finished developing an Australian database on the vitamin K content of foods which will be published soon. The paper "Vitamin K intake and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in the Danish Diet Cancer and Health Study' was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. High BMI causes depression, both physical and social factors play a role University of Exeter (UK), August 9, 2021 A large-scale study provides further evidence that being overweight causes depression and lowers wellbeing and indicates both social and physical factors may play a role in the effect. With one in four adults estimated to be obese in the UK, and growing numbers of children affected, obesity is a global health challenge. While the dangers of being obese on physical health is well known, researchers are now discovering that being overweight can also have a significant impact on mental health.  The new study, published in Human Molecular Genetics, sought to investigate why a body of evidence now indicates that higher BMI causes depression. The team used genetic analysis, known as Mendelian Randomisation, to examine whether the causal link is the result of psychosocial pathways, such as societal influences and social stigma, or physical pathways, such as metabolic conditions linked to higher BMI. Such conditions include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In research led by the University of Exeter and funded by the Academy of Medical Sciences, the team examined genetic data from more than 145,000 participants from the UK Biobank with detailed mental health data available. In a multifaceted study, the researchers analyzed genetic variants linked to higher BMI, as well as outcomes from a clinically-relevant mental health questionnaire designed to assess levels of depression, anxiety and wellbeing. To examine which pathways may be active in causing depression in people with higher BMI, the team also interrogated two sets of previously discovered genetic variants. One set of genes makes people fatter, yet metabolically healthier, meaning they were less likely to develop conditions linked to higher BMI, such as high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. The second set of genes analyzed make people fatter and metabolically unhealthy, or more prone to such conditions. The team found little difference between the two sets of genetic variants, indicating that both physical and social factors play a role in higher rates of depression and poorer wellbeing. Lead author Jess O'Loughlin, at the University of Exeter Medical School, said: "Obesity and depression are both major global health challenges, and our study provides the most robust evidence to date that higher BMI causes depression. Understanding whether physical or social factors are responsible for this relationship can help inform effective strategies to improve mental health and wellbeing. Our research suggests that being fatter leads to a higher risk of depression, regardless of the role of metabolic health. This suggests that both physical health and social factors, such as social stigma, both play a role in the relationship between obesity and depression." Lead author Dr. Francesco Casanova, of the University of Exeter Medical School, said, "This is a robust study, made possible by the quality of UK Biobank data. Our research adds to a body of evidence that being overweight causes depression. Finding ways to support people to lose weight could benefit their mental health as well as their physical health." The study, titled "Higher adiposity and mental health: causal inference using Mendelian Randomisation," is published in Human Molecular Genetics.   Protective effects of saffron compound against amyloid beta-induced neurotoxicity Guangdong Medical University (China), August 4, 2021 According to news reporting from Dongguan, People's Republic of China, research stated, “Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a most common neurodegenerative disorder worldwide. Because of its complex pathogenesis, the prevention and therapies of AD still are a severe challenge.” The news correspondents obtained a quote from the research from Guangdong Medical University, “Evidence suggested that crocin, the major component of saffron, exhibited neuroprotective effects in AD. As such, in this study, N2a/APP695swe cells were enrolled to investigate the effects of crocin on endogenous A beta-induced neurotoxicity. Crocin (100 and 200 mu M) could ameliorate cytotoxicity according to CCK-8 assay and reduce apoptosis in line with Hoechst 33,342 staining and Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining in N2a/APP695swe cells. Reduced ROS generation and elevated MMP were found in N2a/APP695swe cells treated with crocin (100 and 200 mu M). Additionally, crocin at concentrations of 100 and 200 mu M inhibited the release of cytochrome and attenuated caspases-3 activity in N2a/APP695swe cells. Furthermore, succinylation, crotonylation, 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation, malonylation, and phosphorylation were significantly reduced, while a slight increase of acetylation was found in 100-mu M crocin treated N2a/APP695swe cells.” According to the news reporters, the research concluded: “Taken together, crocin may be a promising natural product candidate for the effective cure of AD.” This research has been peer-reviewed.   Microbes have potential to reverse aging in the brain University College Cork (Ireland), August 10, 2021 Microbiome Ireland, a world leading SFI Research Centre, have found that aging-associated changes in the immune system of old mice were reversed by the transfer of gut microbiota from the young mice. The researchers saw improved behavior of older mice in several cognitive tests for learning, memory and anxiety. Credit: Clare Keogh Research from APC Microbiome Ireland (APC) at University College Cork (UCC) published today in the leading international scientific journal Nature Agingintroduces a novel approach to reverse aspects of aging-related deterioration in the brain and cognitive function via the microbes in the gut. As our population ages one of the key global challenges is to develop strategies to maintain healthy brain function. This ground-breaking  research opens up a potentially new therapeutic avenues  in the form of microbial-based interventions to slow down brain aging and associated cognitive problems.  The work was carried out by researchers in the Brain-Gut-Microbiota lab in APC led by Prof John F. Cryan, Vice President for Research & Innovation, University College Cork as well as a Principal Investigator at APC Microbiome Ireland  an SFI Research Centre,  based in in University College Cork and Teagasc Moorepark. There is a growing appreciation of the importance of the microbes in the gut on all aspects of physiology and medicine. In this latest mouse study the authors show that by transplanting microbes from young into old animals they could rejuvenate aspects of brain and immune function. Prof John F. Cryan, says "Previous research published by the APC and other groups internationally has shown that the  gut microbiome plays a key role in aging and the aging process. This new research is a potential game changer , as we have established that the microbiome can be harnessed to reverse age-related brain deterioration. We also see evidence of improved learning ability and cognitive function". Although very exciting Cryan cautions that "it is still early days and much more work is needed to see how these findings could be translated in humans".   APC Director Prof Paul Ross stated that "This research of Prof. Cryan and colleagues further demonstrates the importance of the gut microbiome in many aspects of health, and particularly across across the brain/gut axis where brain functioning can be positively influenced. The study opens up possibilities in the future to modulate gut microbiota as a therapeutic target to influence brain health" The study was led by co-first authors Dr. Marcus Boehme along with Ph.D. students Katherine E. Guzzetta, and Thomaz Bastiaansen. Even quick meditation aids cognitive skills Yale University & Swarthmore College, August 7, 2018  College students who listen to a 10-minute meditation tape complete simple cognitive tasks more quickly and accurately than peers who listen to a "control" recording on a generic subject, researchers at Yale University and Swarthmore College report. The study, published in the journal Frontiers of Neuroscience, shows even people who have never meditated before can benefit from even a short meditation practice. "We have known for awhile that people who practice meditation for a few weeks or months tend to perform better on cognitive tests, but now we know you don't have to spend weeks practicing to see improvement," said Yale's Hedy Kober, associate professor of psychiatry and psychology and senior author of the study. The research team headed by Kober and Catherine Norris at Swarthmore randomly divided college students into two groups. One group listened to a 10-minute recording on meditation prior to performing cognitive tests and the second group listened to a similarly produced tape about sequoia trees. Both groups were then given simple tasks designed to measure cognitive dexterity. Those who listened to the meditation recording performed significantly better, across two studies. There was one exception, however. Those who scored highest in measurements of neuroticism—"I worry all the time"—did not benefit from listening to the meditation tape. "We don't know if longer meditation sessions, or multiple sessions, would improve their cognitive scores, and we look forward to testing that in future studies," Kober said.   Physical activity protects children from the adverse effects of digital media on their weight later in adolescence University of Helsinki (Finland), August 9, 2021   Children's heavy digital media use is associated with a risk of being overweight later in adolescence. Physical activity protects children from the adverse effects of digital media on their weight later in adolescence. A recently completed study shows that six hours of leisure-time physical activity per week at the age of 11 reduces the risk of being overweight at 14 years of age associated with heavy use of digital media. Obesity in children and adolescents is one of the most significant health-related challenges globally. A study carried out by the Folkhälsan Research Center and the University of Helsinki investigated whether a link exists between the digital media use of Finnish school-age children and the risk of being overweight later in adolescence. In addition, the study looked into whether children's physical activity has an effect on this potential link. The results were published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health. More than six hours of physical activity per week appears to reverse adverse effects of screen time The study involved 4,661 children from the Finnish Health in Teens (Fin-HIT) study. The participating children reported how much time they spent on sedentary digital media use and physical activity outside school hours. The study demonstrated that heavy use of digital media at 11 years of age was associated with a heightened risk of being overweight at 14 years of age in children who reported engaging in under six hours per week of physical activity in their leisure time. In children who reported being physically active for six or more hours per week, such a link was not observed. The study also took into account other factors potentially impacting obesity, such as childhood eating habits and the amount of sleep, as well as the amount of digital media use and physical activity in adolescence. In spite of the confounding factors, the protective role of childhood physical activity in the connection between digital media use in childhood and being overweight later in life was successfully confirmed. "The effect of physical activity on the association between digital media use and being overweight has not been extensively investigated in follow-up studies so far," says Postdoctoral Researcher Elina Engberg. Further research is needed to determine in more detail how much sedentary digital media use increases the risk of being overweight, and how much physical activity is needed, and at what intensity, to ward off such a risk. In this study, the amount of physical activity and use of digital media was reported by the children themselves, and the level of their activity was not surveyed, so there is a need for further studies. "A good rule of thumb is to adhere to the physical activity guidelines for children and adolescents, according to which school-aged children and adolescents should be physically active in a versatile, brisk and strenuous manner for at least 60 minutes a day in a way that suits the individual, considering their age," says Engberg. In addition, excessive and extended sedentary activity should be avoided.

Here we talk about what she learned on this journey, from raising funds to food manufacturing to how to market the healthy foods she created so that everyone can afford to eat healthy.

In this week's episode I discuss the gut-microbiome-brain axis and how it affects different aspects of our health and well-being. I begin by talking about the how the microbiome is one of the five natural defense systems in the body and ways that it is impacted by the foods we eat and how we digest them. I also highlight the impact of an imbalanced microbiome on a host of mental and physical health problems in ourselves, as well as its impact intergenerationally.  Throughout this episode I highlight scientific research that demonstrates the connection between our gut and our brain – emotionally and physiologically - and weave in evidence-based principles and strategies drawn from Eastern and Western medicine for taking care of this gut-microbiome-axis in order to promote longevity, holistic wellness, and healing. I close with a brief mindfulness practice intended to help ground us before and/or after meals, and to enhance awareness of the internal emotions, sensations, and thoughts we may be experiencing and bringing in to mealtime, in order to enhance our ability to digest and more fully process foods and their nutrients. Sprouting increases nutrient levels in grains, legumes, vegetables, nuts or seeds. Sprouts also contain lower levels of antinutrients, making it easier for your body to absorb all the nutrients they contain. Sharon, with ‘Food Nerd' walks us through the process of sprouting and the benefits to your health. She created a product called Food Nerd that we will hear about as well that includes  products with fruits, vegetables, and superfoods - and never any artificial or animal based ingredients. "We are always working with nature to provide you with all in one, plant based nourishment. Our goal is to make superfoods more convenient and accessible for you! Chia pudding is the underappreciated baby sister of overnight oats. Chia is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, iron, and fiber. The soluble fiber of the chia soaks up water and the seed swells and becomes gelatinous (similar to flax seeds). This texture is incredible for creating delicious, healthy “puddings” that our taste buds, and our gut love!"

At some point in your life, you’ve likely been told to “trust your gut” when making a decision or experienced a “gut reaction” to external stimuli. Medical research indicates that these gut idioms might just be right about the role of the gut! It turns out that the gut microbiome communicates with the brain and can potentially influence our behavior. Researchers have named this link the gut-brain axis and it provides a robust communication network between the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system. At its core is the enteric nervous system which has more than 5 times the number of neurons in our brains and trillions of microorganisms. This system has been dubbed the “second brain” or the “gut-brain” for its influence on our overall physical and mental health. Our guest today is neuroscientist John Cryan, PhD. Professor Cryan investigates how the gut microbiome affects the mammalian brain. He is Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience and Principal Investigator in the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Center at University College of Cork (Ireland). Dr. Cryan’s research has demonstrated the bi-directional relationship between our gut and emotional and mental wellbeing. In this episode Dr. Weil, Dr. Maizes, and Professor Cryan discuss the role the vagus nerve plays in regulating homeostasis, how chemicals released in the gut send signals to the brain, how maternal bacteria influence our early development, the link between sleep and gut health, and how diet can influence this complex system.

Memory Health Made Easy

Today’s fitness industry looks at exercise as a means of improving and maximizing performance.  We see large biceps and stronger legs as indicators of a healthy body.  This pushes us to have a compartmentalized view of movement that focuses on specialized activities, where we have a leg day or a chest day.  But having a gym or simple fitness-oriented view limits your ability to be resilient, to be well-rounded. Basically it limits the potential of the exercises to challenge your cognitive abilities. Compare that with how “we” used to move, for example, our hunter-gatherer ancestors.  Their movement isn’t just about working on one muscle group, one routine. A diverse and varied range of movement triggers brain engagement. It allows our brains to grow and mature new neurons leading to better memory health. This mindset about exercise and movement needs to change.  It’s no longer about intensity. Having an awareness of the unique and challenging demands we can impose on our bodies to squeeze out more opportunities for neurogenesis is key. If we understand how neurogenesis works and how to prompt it, we have a better chance of preventing avoidable memory loss.   Our brains can continue to build and maintain a rich network of neurons if we understand how the human body as an organism works. We have the chance to tap into this power if we want to. The truth is, we are meant to create and live a formidable life. In this show you’ll learn about: How we can squeeze more out of physical exercise by adding cognitive aspects to leverage neurogenesis Putting stress on the body through unique and challenging demands The phenomenon of movement poverty increasing our risks of sedentary dementia In today’s show, you will learn how to combine cognitive aspects to physical exercise to leverage neurogenesis and build a rich and dense hippocampus resilient to change. Listen To The Podcast Now.    About Our Guest Matt Rutley is a natural movement specialist in Australia. He is a bush skills instructor and the owner and head coach of health and fitness center, Stage Six. As one of the leading experts on moving your body the way it was designed to move, he has worked with clients of all ages including sporting teams, professionals, and Olympic athletes.     The Case for Neurogenesis Getting Interested In Functional Movement Exercise and Its Role Matt shares his childhood of doing a lot of physical and mental work, and his exposure later on to physical training.  Opening his own gym to give people the opportunity to do the things he was doing as a child led him to realize the backward approach to physical fitness and health. Diving into research into the human organism led to more questions. Our physical and mental well-being aren’t separate. What Is Critical To Be Able To Navigate Our Will We are the drivers to fixing our problems. Having an inquisitive mind is important to understand why our body works and reacts to certain ways. If you don’t impose a demand on your body, it will not get good at it. This is the principle Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands (SAID).  Your body adapts to what you ask it to adapt to. Be specific about what you want, why you need it, and how the two correlate. Have an awareness of our physical capabilities and an understanding of what you want. How To Get Better Transference In Life There are different kinds of fitness.  We need to have a sustainable approach when it comes to exercise rather than being on edge all the time just to maximize performance. Most people don’t really have a good idea of whether they might be able to do something. Movement is the reason our brains exist. Exercise boosts brain activity.  Leveraging Movement To Boost Our Hippocampus Movements that are complex and adaptive maximize neurological engagement. The lack of disease in Blue Zones and hunter-gatherer populations.  Challenging ourselves more each time rather than getting used to a routine allows us to squeeze a bit more of the opportunities. Gamification and play-based activities provide a huge opportunity though there is resistance because of people’s perception that exercise is punishment. Changes happen when we put our body under stress to push the limits. Stress signals changes in our body. But too much stress leads to injury. Stress applied should be about purpose and application instead of reinforcing the no pain, no gain mindset.  Understanding why you need to go through that struggle allows you to be informed about the type of struggle and dosage needed.  The Problem With Mundane, Everyday Tasks Movements that are complex and adaptive maximize neurological engagement. If you have only one challenge, your body gets used to it.  To be adaptable, we have to constantly shift the goalpost. High-intensity training essentially works to outdo inactivity, but the intensity is too much. It’s better to spread out burning calories throughout the day in many different ways and with different stimuli and tasks. This is why people during our hunter-gatherer era are healthier. Lowering The Risks For Sedentary Dementia Use an app to set a timer to get up and stretch. Uprooting ourselves entirely from our comfort zones would only make our bodies resistant to change. As our body adjusts, add a new demand that you can layer on.  Adding variety such as changing the route or adding a different range of motion will add a new demand. Be brutally honest, practical, and realistic when goal setting.  Aim for consistency and frequency. Cast a lens around a 6-8 out of 10 level of challenge to drive neuroplasticity or brain change.  We are meant to be very formidable for life.  Harness the Power of Neurogenesis Do the things you want to get better at.  Things will only get worse if you don’t do anything. Be patient with your body, work with it rather than against it. There’s no magic bullet, but there’s a magic process.   Previously Recommended Resources   Articles:     Psychobiotics in mental health, neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders    Cheng et al, (2019) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1021949819300158     Melancholic microbes: a link between gut microbiota and depression?    Prof T. Do the bugs in your gut influence whether you are anxious, depressed, clear-headed, or distracted? Well, it turns out quite possibly. Future depression prescriptions may be custom probiotics rather then Prozac. I invited Scott Anderson the author of the The Psychobiotic Revolution to speak with us today about this most interesting topic. We dive into this and the gut-brain axis, how diet influences the microbiota, fecal transplants, measuring the microbiota, anxiety, depression, and more. About our guest: Scott is a scientist and a science writer who was drawn from the wine country in California to work with horses in Ohio. There, Scott set up a laboratory to help develop equine prebiotics. He found that a less diverse microbiota was associated with colonic ulcers and poor performance. That ultimately led him to John Cryan and Ted Dinan, two pioneers of the gut-brain axis who found that gut microbes can affect the behavior of mice. Scott ended up writing a book with Cryan and Dinan called The Psychobiotic Revolution, from National Geographic. It is now going into the second printing. resources from the episode: Dinan, Melancholic microbes: a link between gut microbiota and depression? Tillisch study. The band was signed to Columbia records and released three albums that still hold up today. The Cryan Shames became known for their intricate harmonies melded over jangly melodies, reminiscent of bands like the Byrds and the Beatles. Kriben Govender (Honours Degree in Food Science & Technology) and James Shadrach (Honours Degree in Psychology) interview the father of Psychobiotics, Professor Ted Dinan.  We discuss how the gut and brain is connected, and the future of probiotics, prebiotics and food as a treatment option for IBS, anxiety, depression, stress and mood management.   Bio: Ted Dinan is Professor of Psychiatry at University College Cork. He was previously Chair of Clinical Neurosciences and Professor of Psychological Medicine at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.  Prior to that, he was a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin.   He has worked in research laboratories on both sides of the Atlantic and has a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of London.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Psychiatrists and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians.  His main research interest is on the role of the gut microbiota in influencing brain function and development.  Within this context he has focused on depression and irritable bowel syndrome. He has made significant contributions to the literature on the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in situations of stress.  In 1995 was awarded the Melvin Ramsey Prize for this research into the biology of stress. His current research is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, the Health Research Board and the European Union through FP7.  He has published over 400 papers and numerous books on the pharmacology and neurobiology of affective disorders.   Research interests:   The “Brain-Gut-Microbe Axis” research  addresses the communication between the brain and gut and how it can be influenced by the gastrointestinal microbiota. This is an area of significance in infancy, where important links between diet, microbes and cognition are established. The influence of the microbiota on obesity and metabolic syndrome are also increasingly recognised. A better understanding of the role of this axis in the stress response, and its links with other debilitating psychiatric conditions, will help provide new treatment and management strategies – these will represent opportunities for both the food ingredients business and the pharmaceutical industry. Within this context papers Prof. Dinan’s group  have promoted the concept of Psychobiotics, probiotics that have a mental health benefit.   Professional activities: Prof. Dinan runs a clinic for treatment refractory depression at Cork University Hospital.  The research focus at this clinic is on biomarkers of response and the development of new therapies.   Publications: Please see  http://orcid.org/0000-0002-2316-7220   Topics discussed:   Brain Gut - Microbiome Axis What are Psychobiotics? Did you hear that? That was the sound of the little brown bat - Myotis lucifugus. They’re everywhere on summer nights, and sometimes if you’re lucky, you’ll get to catch a glimpse of one as it chases mosquitoes through the trees. But go outside right now if you want to, because it’s possible that within the next sixteen years, you won’t be hearing more than a recording. The little brown bats of North America are fighting a losing battle against an enemy we call... Fungi? That’s right. Or, in the scientific world, “Geomyces destructans.” This cold-loving fungus has been ravaging bat caves throughout North America since 2006, wiping out an average of 73% of an infiltrated cave population. How does a fungus take out three out of every four bats? Picture this: It’s late October. You’re a bat, hanging upside down in preparation for winter. This means you’ve eaten your fill of summer insects, you’ve huddled together with your family members, and you’re ready to shut down for the long, cold Northeastern winter ahead. You enter what’s called “torpor” - your body temperature decreases, you are using less energy and fewer resources, and you wake up sleepily every few weeks to replenish. However, your body is now incredibly vulnerable. This is when the fungus strikes, eroding the exposed skin on your ears and wing membranes. You have what is known as White-Nose Syndrome. What does this mean? It means your hibernation plan has been compromised. Your time out of torpor increases, the balance of your systems is disrupted, and you’re prone to starvation or dehydration. Your chances of living are slim, and you’re likely to end up among thousands of your colony members dead on the cave floor. Little brown bats are the most common of bats in North America, but they are now facing a threat that could lead to their eradication in the Northeast in under two decades. This means that the children of my generation’s college students may never get to see a little brown bat in New England. Also, insect populations could vastly increase. An individual bat eats about 3 to 7 grams of insects per night - that’s about the amount of ground coffee required for your 8 oz morning cup. Think of that many mosquitoes instead! Social animals, such as bats, elephants, dolphins, and humans, are especially prone to rapid-spreading disease. It’s easy to be content with the current status of bat populations, but if we don’t pay attention and focus our research efforts now, a disease that first appeared only five years ago could lead to the eradication of our friend the little brown bat.
