After five people perished on a controversial submersible dive to the wreckage of the Titanic in June, we got to thinking about what genuine undersea exploration looks like. In this episode, we speak with Tony Perrottet, who profiled the late OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush for Smithsonian magazine in 2019, about our ancient fascination with exploring hostile environments. Then we're joined by Susan Casey, who has written four best-selling books about the ocean and its creatures, the newest of which is The Underworld: Journeys to the Depths of the Ocean. Susan tells us why understanding the ocean is key to humanity's survival, and how, while serious research and shipwreck tourism may have some overlap, they remain two very different things. Read Tony Perrottet's June 2019 Smithsonian profile of Stockton Rush. Learn more about Tony and his work at his site. OceanGate's sub “Titan” meets a tragic end with a possible implosion 3800 meters below the ocean exploring the Titanic. Amongst the 5 was OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. First and foremost we should take a moment to reflect on the human tragedy. Beyond that you should ask yourself just what risks are truly worth it. We all have an adventurous spirit and some have the funds to go beyond the weekend warrior. But even those who climb Everest ensure to take every precaution and research and train to ensure they make it out alive. Yes all these men knew the risk. But was the technology a bit too cutting edge? Was the team behind this selected for their skill and experience and overall suitably to take on such a risky endeavour? Based on the video where the team was hired to focus on young spirit and diversity, perhaps they were looking at the wrong aspects of what was needed for a quality support team. Also ironically the Navy and U.S. coastguard were the men and women who actually put themselves at risk to try and save the sub and it's crew. Ironically the people that OceanGate would have overlooked as a “typical” crew that would normally be selected. Be careful when your aim is to just tick a box. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE & SHARE ! We come right out with our lone email for the week with Travis who wants to know how we would spend the day with Werner Herzog. The tragic loss of a billionaire and some other peeps in the Titanic OceanGate sub is absolutely the fault of the OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. Ricky Wood is a funny guy who was in Confess, Fletch which Mike enjoyed, but Luke loathed. Anthony Fauci has a complicated past beyond just Covid stuff. Jim Breuer has changed a great deal since the days of Goat Boy. The PGA Tour accepted the Saudis into their tour as investors. Does it matter? Is the Saudi Arabian government any worse in their actions over history than the government of the United States? Nobody seems to care if Saudi money infiltrates every avenue of the economy. Jason Alexander has issues apparently. It all starts with the McDLT in 1985 but he also has derogatory things to say about the game of Cricket. Jerry Seinfeld loathed Mitzi Shore who owned the Comedy Store stand-up until she died in 2018. Seinfeld may be a very petty dude. Govier is excited because the NBA Draft was Thursday night (fast forward Dave & Eric) and Victor Wembanyama is the future of humankind. Black Mirror is so good that Luke and Mike had to turn it off before. Luke compared it to watching Brawl In Cell Block 99 & Dragged Over Concrete back to back. Mike has some Central Michigan University memories of his long lost roommate Ron. Thanks to him the Xzihibit classic Paparazzi was introduced to Govier's world. Then there is plenty of Papa Roach & Magic Man. We love you all! Really! We are very pleased with our little world that together we have formed thanks to this show. Rescuers in a remote area of the Atlantic Ocean are racing against time to find a missing submersible before the oxygen supply runs out for five people who were on a mission to document the wreckage of the Titanic. Despite an international rescue effort, US Coast Guard officials said the search covering 26,000 square kilometres had turned up no signs of the lost sub known as the Titan, but they planned to continue looking. Authorities reported the carbon-fibre vessel overdue Sunday night, setting off the search in waters about 700km south of St John's, Newfoundland. Aboard were a pilot, renowned British adventurer Hamish Harding, two members of a Pakistani business family, and a Titanic expert. The submersible had a 96-hour oxygen supply when it was put to sea at roughly 6am Sunday, according to David Concannon, an adviser to OceanGate Expeditions, which oversaw the mission. That means the oxygen supply could run out tomorrow night (NZ time). Titanic tourist submersible missing graphic CBS News journalist David Pogue, who travelled to the Titanic aboard the Titan last year, said the vehicle communicates by text messages that go back and forth to a surface ship and safety pings that are emitted every 15 minutes to indicate that the sub is still working. Both systems stopped about an hour and 45 minutes after the Titan submerged. “Either they lost all power or the ship developed a hull breach and it imploded instantly. Both of those are devastatingly hopeless,” Pogue told CBC yesterday. The submersible had seven backup systems to return to the surface, including sandbags and lead pipes that drop off and an inflatable balloon. One system is designed to work even if everyone aboard is unconscious, Pogue said. The Titan is prepared for a dive into a remote area of the Atlantic Ocean on an expedition to the Titanic on Sunday, June 18, 2023. Photo / AP Experts said the rescuers face steep challenges. Alistair Greig, a professor of marine engineering at University College London, said submersibles typically have a drop weight, which is “a mass they can release in the case of an emergency to bring them up to the surface using buoyancy”. “If there was a power failure and/or communication failure, this might have happened, and the submersible would then be bobbing about on the surface waiting to be found,” Greig said. Another scenario is a leak in the pressure hull, in which case the prognosis is not good, he said. “If it has gone down to the seabed and can't get back up under its own power, options are very limited,” Greig said. “While the submersible might still be intact, if it is beyond the continental shelf, there are very few vessels that can get that deep, and certainly not divers.” Even if they could go that deep, he doubts rescuers could attach to the submersible. By Tuesday morning, 26,000sq km had been searched, the US Coast Guard tweeted. The Canadian research icebreaker Polar Prince, which was supporting the Titan, was to continue conducting surface searches with help from a Canadian Boeing P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft, the Coast Guard said on Twitter. Two US Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft also conducted overflights. The Canadian military dropped sonar buoys to listen for any possible sounds from the Titan. Concannon, who said he was supposed to be on the dive but could not go, said officials were also working to get a remotely operated vehicle that can dive to a depth of 6km to the site as soon as possible. OceanGate's expeditions to the Titanic wreck site include archaeologists and marine biologists. The company also brings people who pay to come along, known as “mission specialists”. They take turns operating sonar equipment and performing other tasks in the submersible. The Coast Guard said Monday that the Titan carried a pilot and four “mission specialists”. However, OceanGate's website suggests that the fifth person may be a so-called “content expert” who guides the paying customers. Authorities have yet to formally identify those on board, though some names have been confirmed, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, who, according to the company, was a member of the crew. Billionaire adventurer Hamish Harding looks out to sea before boarding the submersible Titan for a dive into the Atlantic Ocean on an expedition to the Titanic. Photo / AP Rush told the Associated Press in June 2021 that the Titan's technology was “very cutting edge” and was developed with the help of Nasa and aerospace manufacturers. “This is the only submersible – crewed submersible – that's made of carbon fibre and titanium,” Rush said, calling it the “largest carbon fibre structure that we know of,” with 12cm-thick carbon fibre and 8cm-thick titanium. Harding, who lives in Dubai, was one of the mission specialists, according to Action Aviation, a company where Harding is chairman. Harding is a billionaire adventurer who holds three Guinness world records, including the longest duration at full ocean depth by a crewed vessel. In March 2021, he and ocean explorer Victor Vescovo descended to the lowest depth of the Mariana Trench. In June 2022, he went into space on Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket. US Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Mauger, commander of the First Coast Guard District, talks about the search for a missing submersible that carries people to view the wreckage of the Titanic. Photo / AP Also on board were Pakistani nationals Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman, according to the family. The Dawoods belong to one of Pakistan's most prominent families. Their eponymous firm invests across the country in agriculture, industries and the health sector. Shahzada Dawood also is on the board of trustees for the California-based Seti Institute that searches for extraterrestrial intelligence. French explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet was also aboard, according to David Gallo, a senior adviser for strategic initiatives and special projects at RMS Titanic. Gallo identified Nargeolet, a friend who has led multiple expeditions to the Titanic, on Tuesday during an interview with CNN. Greg Stone, a longtime ocean scientist based in California and a friend of Rush, called the lost submersible “a fundamentally new submarine design” that showed great promise for future research. Unlike its predecessors, the Titan was not spherical.  “Stockton was a risk taker. He was smart. He had a vision. He wanted to push things forward,” Stone said. The expedition was OceanGate's third annual voyage to chronicle the deterioration of Titanic, which struck an iceberg and sank in 1912, killing all but about 700 of the roughly 2200 passengers and crew. Since the wreckage's discovery in 1985, it has been slowly succumbing to metal-eating bacteria. OceanGate's website said the “mission support fee” for the 2023 expedition was $250,000 a person. Recalling his own trip aboard the Titan, Pogue said the vessel got turned around looking for the Titanic. “There's no GPS underwater, so the surface ship is supposed to guide the sub to the shipwreck by sending text messages,” Pogue said in a segment aired on CBS' Sunday Morning. “But on this dive, communications somehow broke down. The sub never found the wreck.” - Ben Finley & Holly Ramer, APSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
