Elected officials in Rhode Island have been trying to reinvent the state's economy practically since the Great Depression -- and it remains a work in progress. During his State of the State speech on Tuesday, Governor Dan McKee cited an upbeat message. He says Rhode Island is flipping the script on outdated narratives about being an economic laggard. But polling shows Rhode Islanders do not share McKee's optimism about the state being headed in the right direction. The state still lacks the kind of more diversified economy found in Massachusetts. And the possible move out of state by Hasbro shows how unexpected changes can quickly emerge. As president of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce since 2005, Laurie White has a front row seat on these issues. So what are the top obstacles to building a better economy -- and does the chamber have any bright ideas for making things better? This week on Political Roundtable, I'm going in-depth with president of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce Laurie White.
The conversation about the journey to motherhood with Laurie White wraps up in this episode. After welcoming a baby into the world, joy is evident and the real work begins. The mother's recovery and care along with focusing on the welfare of the baby are also addressed in this informative episode. This week Chief Neil Dubord is joined by Laurie White. Laurie graduated from the RCMP training academy, ‘depot', in 1996 and was posted to Kitimat, B.C. Less than three years into her career she was shot in the leg while executing a search warrant at the home of a sex offender. Laurie shares her incredible story of losing her leg, her physical and mental recovery and her heroic return to work as the first police officer in Canada to return to full, unrestricted policing duties, with an artificial leg. Laurie and Chief Dubord discuss how the injury sent her to a dark place mentally, and how she struggled with constantly being told ‘you are lucky to be alive', while at the same time feeling incredibly angry. Laurie went on to have a full career and write a book about her experience after her retirement in 2020. On this week's episode, Scott and Shaun are joined by retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant, Laurie White, to discuss her biographical book, 10-33, An Officer Down Steps Back Up.Laurie covers her journey to and through the Mounties, and how losing her leg after being shot during the execution of a search warrant, became the path less traveled for both her and the RCMP. Laurie overcame many obstacles, both mentally and physically, through her grit, determination and humility during the challenging process of recovery and her unprecedented return to full service. Law enforcement officers regularly make sacrifices during their time on the job; Laurie's story is one that emulates the proverbial, “pound of flesh,” both figuratively and literally. On the podcast this week, our guests Laurie White and Aaron Yeats talk with Stephanie Wong and Kelci Mensah about higher education and how Google Cloud is helping students realize their potential. As a former educator, Laurie has seen the holes in tech education and, with the help of Google, is determined to aid faculty and students in expanding learning to include cloud education as well as the standard on prem curriculum. Aaron and Laurie work together toward this goal with programs like their Speaker Series. Laurie's approach involves supporting faculty as they design courses that incorporate cloud technologies. With the busy lives of students today, she recognizes that the best way to get the information into the hands of students is through regular coursework, not just through elective activities outside the regular classroom. Aaron's work with students and student organizations rounds out their support of higher education learning. He facilitates the creation of student clubs that use Cloud Skills Boost, a program in which students navigate full pathways as they learn the skills they need to create and manage cloud builds. Soon, Aaron will offer hack-a-thons that encourage students to attend weekend events to work together on passion projects outside of regular classwork. Our guests talk more about the specifics of Google Cloud Higher Education Programs and the importance of incorporating certifications into the higher education learning process. Aaron talks about expanding the program and his hopes for reaching out to more schools and students and Laurie talks about the funding for students and how Google Cloud's system of credits for students enables them to use real cloud tools without a credit card. Laurie and Aaron tell us fun stories about past student successes, conference interactions, and hack-a-thon projects that went well. Laurie White Laurie taught CS in higher ed for over 30 years where her biggest frustration was trying to keep the curriculum up with the field. She thought she was retiring seven years ago but got the call from Google to a job where she could help faculty around the world keep their curriculum up with cloud computing, so here she is. Aaron Yeats Aaron Yeats has been working in education outreach for two decades. His work in education has included Texas government education programs including public health, non-profit advocacy, and education. We often say that life can change in the blink of an eye. I wonder what it would it be like to know our lives could be at risk when we leave for work each day? With only a few years under her belt as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Laurie White had been taught to expect the unexpected. Despite extensive training preparing her for adversity on the job, Laurie could not have anticipated what was in store on that fateful night. Looking back on her initial responses to being shot in the line of duty, and the recovery process associated with her injuries, Laurie understands what it means to be resilient. Whether it was accepting her leg amputation, learning to walk with a prosthesis or recertifying to return to the line of duty, there isn't a manual on how to bounce back from this kind of hardship. Taking a realistic lens on important topics such as post traumatic stress, depression, suicide ideation, and other challenges faced by first responders every day, Laurie reminds us of the human behind the uniform. Laurie White, retired Canadian RCMP officer, had no idea what had happened when she accompanied fellow officers to respond to a domestic violence call and found herself dumbfounded by the smoke that was coming from her leg. Her brain then makes the connection that one of the bullets flying her direction must have struck her. Laurie would spend weeks in the hospital undergoing numerous surgeries before the decision would be made to amputate her leg. Naturally, Laurie's adaptation to this life-changing event would take her through a tumultuous journey mired in depression, helplessness, and reframing how she saw herself. What emerged from this harrowing timeline is a woman who was determined to return to work, reclaim her agency, and not allow the loss of a limb to define her. Laurie worked many more years, recently published a book entitled 10-33: An officer down steps back up, and spreads her message of hope and inspiration to all who have hit rock bottom.
In this episode I connect with a retired Sgt. Laurie White who served in the RCMP from 1996 - 2020. Laurie, in 1998, while executing a Search Warrant in Kitimat, BC was shot in the leg. Laurie recalls the incredible pain and suffering that came from that moment. Laurie later had to come to terms with the loss of her leg as it could not be saved despite the best efforts of surgeons in Vancouver. Laurie then unwilling to resign from active police work began to fight to keep her job as an active duty RCMP member. Laurie would have to go through all of the benchmarks she had previously passed; however, now with a prosthetic leg. The physical and psychological toll of this event later contributed to Laurie developing and being diagnosed with PTSD. Laurie knew prior to being diagnosed that something was not quite right but continued to persevere and be resilient throughout her career with the Mounties. Once diagnosed with PTSD Laurie began to seek active therapy with her mental health providers and support team. Despite the intensity of having to revisit past traumatic events and process unresolved trauma, all while being a new mother, Laurie continued to show that her indomitable spirit would never fail her. In later years Laurie began to realize that her time was finally coming to a close with the RCMP. She also discusses how difficult it was to leave and how this later assisted her in her continued PTSD recovery. Laurie, in this next chapter of life, is an accomplished author and has written a published book "10-33: An Officer Down Steps Back Up" which details her experience. Laurie also enjoys public speaking and is proud to continue to share her story in hopes of helping someone in need. A conversation that covers much ground, Laurie has proven herself repeatedly in life. The struggles in life can often be profound. The limitations both physical and psychological that can come from the "cost of service" are often unspoken by our First Responders; however, in this episode we dive deep into what that world can look like. Sergeant (ret'd) Laurie White spent 23 years as a British Columbia based member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. She's been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Medal of Valour from the International Association of Women Police. On November 27, 1988, she heard the radio call that no police officer ever wants to hear, “10-33”. That's the radio code indicating the highest priority emergency, an officer is down. She never thought the one and only time she'd hear that call, that she was the emergency, that she was the officer down.Laurie joins us on this episode to talk about that harrowing day, her physical and mental journey to get back to active duty and her recently published memoir, aptly entitled 10-33: An Officer Down Steps Back Up. When Laurie White joined the RCMP in 1995, she had no idea that within the first three years of her career, her life would change forever and she would be off the job for almost a year. Nothing could stop her, though, and she was back with her RCMP team as soon as she could be. In this episode of Blue Line, The Podcast, editor Brittani Schroeder spoke with White about her journey with the RCMP, how she found a “new normal” in 1998 after she was shot on duty, and how officer resiliency plays a part in it all.
"I heard a loud pop, like a giant balloon and I saw a giant black hole in the door I was standing next to. I looked down, and as I did I smelled the familiar smell of gun powder. I thought to myself 'did I just get shot?' and I told my partner and he told me to lay down so I did. Then he grabbed me by my vest and pulled me around the corner."That's the short version of the story from today's guest Laurie White, retired RCMP.With only 2 years on the job Laurie was shot by a suspect while serving a warrant. After being flown from rural Kitimat BC to Vancouver she awoke to an amputated leg and news that the man who shot her later killed himself after a standoff.Laurie shares her story in a new book: 10-33 An Officer Down Steps Back Up This week Laurie shares:The feelings when you have to put on a smile for all the press after an on duty injuryHow depression impacted her after having to move away from homeWhy her story had to wait so long to be toldHow hard Justin worked not to tell a single foot pun the entire showBOLOEdge of the Earth Arkham Horror Living Card GameThe Disappearing Spoon by Sam KeanDon't forget to subscribe and do us a favor and drop a review wherever you get your podcasts. It's Week 11 of the college football season, and the games are getting bigger and bigger -- even the littlest of them. To help us navigate one of the best little rivalries, we welcome back Kim Daboo, a #CnCShow veteran who holds a degree from Oregon but was nice enough not to hold that over Crappy's head. But Kim did manage to set off Crappy's college football anxieties almost immediately by bringing up Ohio State's Week 11 opponent: the Purdue Spoilermakers. Commence flashbacks to 2018 in West Lafayette. AJ takes us through what is a defacto #BakedGoods weekend in the G5 and delivers a fun fact about Boise State and oddly covered football fields. Crappy is still basking the glow of a Cornell win at Penn and he's hoping against hope for another when the Big Red travels to Dartmouth. And then? The main events: No. 8 Oklahoma at No. 13 Baylor (Big Nude Saturday, Fox) As they considered this year's schedule back in August, the Sooners probably considered this to be a tune-up game on the way to Bedlam. Funny thing, though -- Baylor turned out to be really good. No. 6 Michigan at Penn State (Noon Saturday, ABC) James Franklin doesn't have as many baffling coaching tendencies as Jimmy Harbaugh, but he does have his moments. If he keeps his headscratchers off the field on Saturday -- and if Penn State gets the home field support it generally does -- this could be a Penn State win. No. 16 NC State at No. 12 Wake Forest (7:30 p.m. Saturday, ACCN) Looking for defense? Look elsewhere. With an AJ Fun Index of 66.5, this game will be all about entertainment -- oh, and for a seat at the top of the ACC Atlantic. Williams at Amherst, (Noon Saturday, find a stream at the Williams Athletics site) Finally, we turn to the Biggest Little Game in America. Kim, a proud Williams alum, takes us through the rivalry, its origins and its traditions. And Crappy speaks from experience when he says there is little better than beating your rival to clinch a championship -- and that's what we're expecting from the 8-0 Ephs (please don't pronounce that the way Crappy did, OK?) We wrap the show by going back to the days before #CnCShow existed, when we -- Carla, Crappy and Kim -- were contributors to the late, great Draft Day Suit sports blog. This show began as an offshoot of the occasional grainy, buggy Google + Hangouts to predict NFL games, and Kim was there from the beginning, along with DDS founders/leaders Sarah Bockneck Braesch and Laurie White. We'll forever be grateful that we had a platform at Draft Day Suit to get this endeavor started, with the full support of Sarah and Laurie. And Crappy will never, ever tire of reminding Sarah of the time he told her that a rookie named Russell Wilson would be a better NFL quarterback than RGIII. So thanks to Sarah, Laurie, Kim and all of the other DDS staffers -- and thanks to you guys once again. Enjoy the games this weekend.
