By sheer force of will, Paul Godfrey built a Major League Baseball team in what was then Canada's sleepy second city, when everyone doubted it could be done. (He ended up in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and the Blue Jays would go on to win two World Series.) He helped shake up a staid and boring local newspaper scene with the scrappy Toronto Sun, before going on to build a national media empire. Now, after 14 years at the helm of Postmedia, Godfrey is pivoting again. The legendary politician and businessman talks with Brian this week about his astounding rise from his humble start in local government to where he is now. And he says one of his next projects will be to trying to once again help Toronto, the city he loves, which he says has become a city in decline. When describing Paul Godfrey's career, it's easier to ask the question - what hasn't he done? A prominent Canadian businessman and former politician, Paul became the publisher and CEO of the Toronto Sun in 1984 and played a pivotal role in the development of Toronto's SkyDome, which opened in 1989. Throughout his career, Godfrey has been influential in both the media and sports industries in Canada, with many saying he was the driving force in bringing MLB to Toronto. Now, in 2024, Paul joins Bob and John to talk about his recent induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, his outstanding bet with the Bobcat himself, and much more to start another week of podcasting.

It's an uncertain time for the future of journalism in Canada. Bell Media announced layoffs and closed radio stations; Postmedia and the Toronto Star's parent company are talking about merging; and Google and Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, threatened to block Canadian news from their platforms because of an ongoing feud with the federal government. That move leaves Canadians, including The CJN's audience, in danger of having less access to vital information about our world, and threatens the country's journalism industry as a whole—which relies heavily on visibility on social platforms and search engines to reach our audiences. So what does the future hold, and how will it impact what you can read, hear and watch? We've assembled a panel of experts to break it all down and offer tips for what you can do while the dust settles. On The CJN Daily, we're joined by three key players in the country's media landscape: Paul Godfrey, the former executive chairman and founder of Postmedia; Yoni Goldstein, the CEO and editor in chief of The CJN; and author Jeffrey Dvorkin, currently a lecturer at Massey College in Toronto, who has formerly been the head of CBC Radio and the ombudsman at NPR. What we talked about Learn how you can bypass Facebook and Google by supporting The CJN directly. Read about how The CJN pivoted during the pandemic to a new business model, in The CJN Learn more about Jeffrey Dvorkin's book, Trusting the News in a Digital Age, and where to buy it Credits The CJN Daily is written and hosted by Ellin Bessner (@ebessner on Twitter). They also talk about their love for chasing prairie grouse in the Nebraska Sandhills. • Julia Schrenkler returns to our podcast reminiscing about how her first shorthair, Wren, lead her to become a bird hunter ten years ago, and the importance of Wednesday evenings with the Zeman group for training her new pup, Nixie. • Richard Hansen explains the circumstances leading him to getting a German shorthair as the COVID pandemic started and how his pup, Debbie, has pushed him headfirst into training, bird hunting, and wildlife habitat conservation. • Paul Godfrey offers a variety of “dad” jokes as he explains his reactivation back into hunting through the addition of a Brittany puppy after coaching youth hockey during the last thirty years.

“He always said you never learn anything by talking,” reminisces Steven of his late father Murray Menkes, who began as a small house builder in the 1950s. Murray, an opinionated risk-taking visionary, laid the foundation for his three sons: Alan, Steven, and Peter, who collectively elevated Menkes Developments Ltd. to new heights. Today, the Menkes Empire is responsible for some of the greatest real estate developments in the Greater Toronto Area. In an intimate conversation moderated by Paul Godfrey, president, and CEO of Postmedia Network and a close friend of the family, attendants at ULI's 6th Annual Fireside Chat listened silently as the three sons shared stories and lessons learned over the course of 37 years.
The Abraham Global Peace Initiative is a new human rights think tank founded by Avi Benlolo. And If Benlolo's name sounds familiar, it may be because he's a prolific writer and commentator about Israel and Jewish issues, including antisemitism and the Holocaust. Benlolo spent two decades as head of the Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies, until his sudden departure in the summer of 2020. His latest venture is the AGPI, and his supporters include prominent Canadian leaders, including Ed Sonshine, Paul Godfrey, Jerry Grafstein, Holocaust suvivor Max Eisen and politicians Bill Blair and Stockwell Day. This week, Benlolo plans to bring his venture to the United Nations, where he's launching his think tank on the international scene and handing out an award in human rights to Canada's Ambassador to the UN, Bob Rae. While Benlolo says that, in the fight against antisemitism, existing Canadian Jewish groups—including his former employer—have a role to play, he feels their approaches aren't working. He believes it's time to try a new method to tackle the scary state of the world. After two years of reports and stuffy consultations, the slow-moving train-wreck that's been the "news bailout" has made its way into the proposed 2018-19 federal budget. The budget dedicates $50 million dollars over five years to "supporting local journalism," but who's eligible for funding? Though crucial details are pending, PostMedia Network's CEO Paul Godfrey and former Globe and Mail EIC Ed Greenspon are not happy—so maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all! Jesse speaks with entrepreneurs running innovative, independent digital media startups across the country to gauge their reactions, and to see if any of them will be vying for a piece of the government-made pie. Media concentration, market consolidation, vertical integration, call it whatever catch phrase you like. It all means the same thing. Fewer and fewer corporate identities are producing content, sending it out from their outlets on their transmission systems to your devices they sell and contract to you. It's been going on and spreading for 40 years but the last decade has seen this cannibalization and elimination of diversity in opinion and thought reach a fever pitch. Canada is the runaway leader of media monopoly in the G8 nations by a wide margin. Yes, a large degree greater than the United States. From the Royal Irvings who own every english paper in New Brunswick, to the perverted legacies of Ted Rogers and Izzy Asper, to the megalomania of Pierre Karl Peladeau and Conrad Black, to the absolute fireball destruction known as Postmedia and Paul Godfrey. Has it been enabled by governments? Yes, indeed. Has it been sold by these same conglomerates as the cure-all of the 21st century? Absolutely. Has it worked at all? For a few at the top, yes. For the public, for employees, for unions, for investors, for freedom of expression and diversity of opinion, the answer is a resounding no. But it's not over. The cause is not yet lost. The internet has yet to be corralled, despite constant efforts to do so. The last frontier is producing independent content interested in journalism, truth and ethics. Just as originally intended before news was a commodity. Before "infotainment". Someone at the forefront of that fight is Sandy Garossino, Associate Editor of the National Observer. Sandy joins us in the second half of the show to explain the uphill battle for independent media in 21st century Canada. A battle that deserves your support and attention. Tune in, join the chat room, call in and be heard. Help contribute to and encourage the survival of independent media.

Paul Godfrey, a professor at Brigham Young University, is part of a growing movement that says we can end poverty, that it is not a necessary part of of a global economy. His book, More than Money, was just published by Stanford Business Books. In the book he lays out specific plans for enabling and empowering people to rise above their circumstances, helping them to develop five different forms of capital:institutional, human, social, organizational, and physical. Paul will also be speaking at GoodCrowd14, the Social Enterprise and Crowdfunding Conference at Snowbird, Utah on September 26, 2014. More about More than Money: This book presents a novel framework that shows how five types of interrelated capital—institutional, human, social, organizational, and physical—enable development and sustainable growth. In addition to a widely-applicable model, Godfrey provides principles to guide application. Core chapters articulate each specific form of capital and provide examples of how it contributes to the triple bottom line. Not just a theoretical examination of poverty, More than Money delivers timely advice to organizations that produce goods and services, implement policies, and create meaningful change on the ground. This book will guide social innovators and entrepreneurs in business, government, and civil society settings as they create a vision, assemble a team of strong partners, and effectively measure social innovation. Paul’s bio: Paul C. Godfrey is a Professor of Strategic Management, Senior Research Fellow and Associate Academic Director of the Ballard Center for Economic Self-Reliance. His work on Corporate Social Responsibility as insurance continues to be cited and used by other scholars and practitioners. His work has appeared in the top management and strategy journals, the Academy of Management Reviewand the Strategic Management Journal. His current research focuses on self-reliance and eliminating global poverty in the lives of individuals and families. Paul currently has a book in production on the subject with the Stanford University Press, and his article on the informal economy was the most downloaded article from the Annals of the Annals of the Academy of Management for 2011.
Paul talks about Liverpool FC, trips to skegness, and spreaded cheese sandwiches.
