The show starts today with a toast to a great man who the golfing world lost this week, Glenn Joyner, who passed far too young from the scourge that is cancer. Nick and Mark say a few words about Glenn. And we also welcome Ping on board as a friend of the podcast, Nick has had a long involvement with Ping, and talks about the vault room at Ping HQ - there, there's a pic on socials of Nick in the vault! The boys meander down memory lane on Ping putters. We have to discuss Viktor Hovland, and how well he played at the weekend. His driving was incredible, his last round amazing. A brilliant performance, for Nick the turning point was the 14th hole - he explains what he was seeing, and he reckons that hole almost decided the tournament. Nick makes an observation on Hovland's chipping. The boys have a great discussion around who they feel would be regarded as the player of the year. Rahm? Scheffler? Hovland? Nick and Mark name the player who they feel it is. We then discuss if Trump should be considered player of the year given his 67 at the weekend. Surely he's not making that up? Trump telling lies…no way, we don't believe it. That would never happen.Onto the Ryder Cup and at the time of the pod recording, the teams aren't announced, so Nick and Mark debate who will be in. They have differing views on a number of the players. It will be fascinating to see how close the boys are to the actual teams. Will they, as Mark suggests, have egg on their face? After the turn, Mark talks about how he's got new grips - and he is extremely excited. Nick and Mark chat about how they like to wear their grips, both a little different. Mark tells a story about people with old grips being fitted with new grips and how it impacted their speed.Damien from Tassie is on the phone with an observation about Gabi Ruffels from the weekend, and a great example of why she's a fantastic human.Nick runs us around the results from all over the world, with a focus on the Aussies. It's been a big week, lots happening. One of the things that Nick and Mark noticed was Paul Goydos messing up a 2-foot putt at a key moment. The vision isn't pretty to watch. Speaking of hard to watch - Nick explains what happened to Curtis Luck this week, not good….if you're not across it, Nick explains. Of all the performances, one that stood out to Nick was Sue Wooster. As usual - heaps of feedback this week, which we always love. Feedback, questions, and a whack for Nick.Top 5 this week comes from Mark, and he looks at the Top 5 players in history with a perceived weakness in their short game, with a focus on Australian players. If you have any you think Mark has missed, let us know on socials. Nick and Mark have some homework to report back next week on what they felt was the weakness in their game through their career. And today's masterclass is from Nick O'Who, not Nick O'Hern, and he talks about using the tee to your advantage if you're prone to hitting fades.Talk Birdie To Me, new episodes weekly wherever you get your podcasts. Andy and Brendan make a pledge at the start of this episode that it will absolutely not go over a certain mark, and then they blow past that as they forgot to do an ad read. They begin with some thoughts on the IL Crown format, the relatively un-dramatic 2023 edition, and the pieces in place. Then they get to Wells Fargo, where Andy and Brendan debate whether this is proof that the Designated model will have some real issues next year when it's not mandatory that top players, such as Rahm and Scheffler, show up to play. There's some Rickie chatter, and a good bit on Michael Kim earning an Open exemption. There's also discussion about the Warriors “coach” uniforms and the preposterous Coronation scripting. On the Euro Tour, they discuss Adrian Meronk's win and push to make the Ryder Cup, and how terrible the golf course looks. The Champions Tour has a real, legit interesting dustup with the angry tweets of Paul Goydos about rampant cart usage on that circuit, with a big shot at Commish Jay mixed in for good measure.

Greg McLaughlin, President PGA TOUR Champions talks about the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai returning to the Big Island of Hawaii for the 22nd year. It's the season opening event for the PGA TOUR Champions with official event champions of the 2016 and 2017 seasons, winners of the majors from recent years and professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. Played on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu, the Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 16 and Wednesday January 17 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday January 18-19-20 is the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast on NBC Golf Channel. It's a 1.8 million purse. Bernhard Langer defends. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate tournament week for $25 Tournament Day and $ 45 Tournament Week Pass . I think one of the best aspects of this Mitsubishi Electric Championship is monies raised for our local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the 300+ volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf and the Daniel R Sayre Foundation are also recipients. 2018 Eligible Player Field: Michael Allen, Stephen Ames, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Fred Couples, John Daly, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Brandt Jobe, Jerry Kelly, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Tom Pernice,Jr., Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Vijay Singh, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe Sponsor Exemptions: Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Fred Funk, Peter Jacobsen, Corey Pavin, Loren Roberts, Jeff Sluman, David Toms Hall of Fame Eligible: Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Jose Maria Olazabal, Tom Watson, Ian Woosnam I think it is significant that Greg McLaughlin was involved with many of the current PGA TOUR Champions players as they were coming up and making strides on the PGA TOUR. Before he joined the PGA TOUR as Senior VP of PGA TOUR Championship Management, Greg was Tournament Director of the PGA Northern Trust Open (formerly Nissan Open), Honda classic, BMW Championship and Director of the Tiger Woods Foundation for 14 years. At the Nissan Open in 1992 at Rivera Country Club in LA Greg was responsible for providing Tiger Woods with his first exemption to compete in a PGA TOUR. Fred Couples won the Nissan Open that year. I was at that 1992 Nissan Open and it was the first time I met Greg McLaughlin and it was the first time I ever saw Tiger Woods. He was around 16 years old. I was just venturing to other venues to cover golf and I'll always remember how helpful and friendly Greg was to me when I got press credentials for the Nissan Open over several years. I appreciate having worked with and been very involved with the PGA TOUR Champions and Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager for 22 years now. It's been fun to weave so many relationships in the world of golf in my hometown Detroit and Hawaii into my life. For instance Brian Goin. Brian had been Tournament Director of the Ford Seniors in Detroit for many years and then as Director of PGA Tour Championship Management we worked together on the Mitsubishic Electric Championship at Hualalai. We have mutual friends in the Detroit Media and handful of my friends from Detroiters have for years played in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai Pro-AM and we have a few spots open for this year. Greg and I mention Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, Michigan being the site in September 2018 for the PGA TOUR Champions Ally Challenge. Warwick Hills hosted the Buick Open for 45 years through 2009. As a junior golfer aspiring to play professional golf in the 1960's, attending the Buick Open was very special. So grateful for the game of golf and the relationships in my life through golf professionally and personally. Paul Goydos enjoyed two victories on the PGA Tour but he's better known to fans for performances at two tournaments he did *not* win: losing a playoff to Sergio Garcia at the 2008 Players and shooting 59 at the 2010 John Deere. Those close to the game know Goydos as one of golf's keenest minds. He has an opinion on practically everything, including politics, which he follows closely. Goydos sat down with Alan Shipnuck last week at Pebble Beach for a lively, wide-ranging conversation that included his thoughts on President Trump, with whom he was paired with at the 1993 Crosby Clambake. Two days after the chat, Trump began his war of words with NFL players and NBA icons, adding a freighted backdrop to Goydos's musings.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai will be Tuesday January 17-Saturday January 21. The final round being on Saturday means football fans who love golf too can stay home and watch football on Sunday!!!! Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and I have worked together on this tournament for 20 years. We share some stories about what a wonderful week it is in so many ways. Meanwhile here are specifics ... . It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 17-Wednesday January 18 and for the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast with a 1.8 million purse will be broadcast on NBC Golf Channel Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 19-21. Duffy Waldorf will defend. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec Week. $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate $25 Tournament Day Pass $ 50 Tournament Pass . The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.
