One evening when Mr. Hale is out, her mother starts to talk of Margaret's brother Fredrick. There was a terrible storm the previous night, and every time there is a storm, Mrs. Hale claims that she can only think of Fredrick on a ship somewhere in the sea. She says that she is very glad that he is now on shore again. Margaret asks where he is based now, and her mother responds that he is somewhere in Spain, but that he has taken the name of Dickenson, so that he cannot be recognised. Margaret asks properly, for the first time, what truly happened. Mrs. Hale sends Margaret to her cabinet to get some letters from Fredrick. Margaret starts to read the letters, but her mother takes over and tells her what happened. Fredrick was put onto a ship called the Orian where he worked under a man called Mr Ried, whom he did not like. Later he was put on another ship called the Russell, where said Mr. Ried was in command. Fredrick promised that he would try to get along with the captain, but it seems that Mr Ried is a very strict captain. One letter tells how Mr. Ried threatened to flog the last sailor to climb down from the rigging, and the men, terrified of the beating that would await them raced down as fast as they could. The highest man decided it would be quicker for him to jump and try to catch a rope on his way down, but he missed and hit the deck instead. Mrs. Hale says that they only received this news after the mutiny. That captain Ried was sent off to drift in a boat with a few men while the rest set off to be pirates. Mrs. Hale was certain that her Fredrick would be with Mr Ried and that his surname had just been misspelled in the newspaper. When Mr. Hale came back from collecting the paper that day he was so stunned that he could hardly speak, and when Mrs. Hale read that paper, the was so disgusted by what was written about her son that she ripped it up, even with her teeth. She is certain that he son was innocent in the affair, and even if he wasn't, she is prouder of him for defending the innocents than letting people be bullied. Margaret then asks if it would be possible for her brother to come home one day to which Mrs. Hale tearfully responds that he would be hanged if he were to ever come back to England. On announcing this, Mrs. Hale turns away from her daughter, too hurt by the thought of her son's punishment.SEO stuff I don't want to do. Elizabeth Gaskell's classic, "North and South" sees Margaret Hale's live uprooted as her family moves to the north of England. Initially disgusted by the ugliness of the industrial town of Milton, Margaret develops a strong sense of social justice after seeing the poverty and suffering of local mill workers.

I've been telling folks I've been working on my Emily Dickinson "No Kings" piece this week, and here it is. Though not really a statement on current political regimes, but it is something of a statement about having too great an expectation of rewards from potentates. The poem I made into a song is Dickenson at her most snarky: the king is springtime sun, and the foolish morning thinks that this "sun king" will marry her and crown her his queen. Dickinson knows how this turns out. The Parlando Project takes various words (mostly literary poetry) and combines them with original music in differing styles. We've done over 850 of these combinaitons, and you can hear any of them and read about our encounters with the words at our blog and archives located at frankhudson.org

What do you do when you're faced with an insurmountable obstacle? Answer: You act with realistic hope. This week at Love University, we had an inspiring time with Jennifer Dickenson—cancer survivor, wellness advocate, and author of A Case for Hope (https://tinyurl.com/4j2jukn8). In 2011, she was a busy, stressed-out lawyer who was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer and told she only had twelve months to live. She recovered and now teaches others how to harness their mind, body, and spirit to create durable well-being. Here are some important things to keep in mind when you're stuck in an unwinnable place: Hope Is a Daily Verb One way to define hope is “focusing on the positive while taking realistic steps toward joy and meaning.” Genuine hope begins with practical optimism. You expect the best while also planning for contingencies and unexpected occurrences. In this way, you're prepared but positive; realistic yet optimistic. Train Your Attention on Small but Steady Goals Big numbers—diagnoses, timelines, statistics—can paralyze you. The antidote is to work on the small numbers you can control. Begin with the smallest winnable action: a five-minute walk when your energy is low; talking to a friend for a short while when you're lonely; reading a few pages of a spiritual book when you need inspiration.  Remember: Your attention is your remedy. Focus on the things that empower and heal you: meditating, praying, exercising, listening to music, spending quality time with loved ones, or practicing a relaxing bedtime ritual (turn off devices 30 minutes before sleep). When you do these things, you will be refreshed and energized, ready to look forward to tomorrow with renewed hope and enthusiasm.    Laughter Is a Great Medicine Laugher can save your life.  Norman Cousins, the renowned journalist and author, combined humor films with medical care during a serious inflammatory illness. He recovered and wrote a classic book: Anatomy of an Illness. It's true: Humor can lighten your life and help you gain perspective. Start this week: watch funny shows, go to a comedy show, or play improv games with your friends—the laughter that ensues will enlighten your mind and lift your spirits. In the end, rebuilding your life is about practical, optimistic, and repeatable steps. Choose one healthy thing you can do today—do it before noon, and let tomorrow build on it. Your life will grow with hope and happiness.

How did Charles Spurgeon's theology of prayer shape one preacher's lifelong commitment to expositional ministry, personal integrity, and staying rooted in a single congregation? In this conversation, Mike Neglia sits down with Dr. Keeney Dickenson, a seasoned pastor and mentor, to explore the spiritual and pastoral depth that comes from decades of prayer-soaked preaching and long-term faithfulness in one place. From his first sermon at age 17 to a lifetime of week-in, week-out preaching through entire books of the Bible, Keeney shares the lessons, struggles, and joys of walking closely with the Lord and his congregation. Drawing deeply from Spurgeon's example, he explains how prayer isn't just part of sermon prep—it is the sermon prep. Jennie Dickenson: “Hell or high water, poetry and life” Introduction: Jennie Allida Dickenson  3/8/1988-?  Is a millennial hailing from the Northeastern Nevada high desert. She has lived in San Francisco, CA Olympia, WA and points throughout East Texas where she currently resides. A Jennie of all trades, she has held a myriad of jobs but prefers to think of herself as a silversmith. A poet, perhaps, when the poems get wrangled out of her. This collection features strictly her poems, but she plans to publish memoirs from the many adventures she has survived.  This poetry collection spans more than fifteen years of the author's adventurous life. Buckle up for poems of love, romance, tragedy, heartbreak, determination and self-actualization. Read it as a memoir, or a warning tale, let it flow over you as words that have passed. There is a new chapter being written with every new experience. This is the flotsam and jetsam from the years between 2008-2024. My life is my signature and it is a gripping account of all the bullets I have dodged.  I invite you into the mess of my heart. Through the raw, tender, and profound, I trace the rough threads of love, loss, and longing. These poems are for anyone who has loved deeply, questioned their own heart, or searched for the beauty in vulnerability. There are poems here for those who have raised their faces to the sky asking, “WHY?! As well. Sure to stir a familiar emotion in you at some point, I hope you find a poem to be a companion through your own unforgettable adventure.
