On the week when the new leader of the SNP was announced, Jemma and Marina pay tribute to the late, great Paul O Grady ( as did Dominic Raab, who rather insultingly got his name wrong in Parliament) The big news in this episode is the latest sting by Led By Donkeys. MPS FOR HIRE! Hancock, Brady, Williamson and Kwarteng all feature in negotiations which are both grubby, embarrassing, unprofessional an..... entirely legal... Spare a thought for England captain, Harry Kane. He had to take a call from Rishi Sunak - it's pretty horrendous to listen to and sounds a lot better once Michael Spicer has changed it up. Phil MelbournePhil is a fantastic stand up comedian, voiceover artist and a very original writer. His style is laid back and relaxed but with punchlines that would flaw Tyson. Phil started out as a lifeguard then a bluecoat in the holiday chain Pontins… it was inevitable that he would find the funny. I've seen him on stage and been in his company socially and he is a natural. The last time I saw him was on a video message he was paying tribute to a mutual friend in Paul Eastwood and he had me in hysterics. Paul would have loved & laughed at his words.Phil has enjoyed summer seasons, pantomimes, Cruise Ships, corporate bookings and continues to deliver his own style of humour to the masses.Welcome to E&T Phil Melbourne

Today Quiz and Crazies Day Thirty two of the Spanish Lockdown, the sometimes amusing, diary of a Brit in southern Spain under the 'Alarma' - normal life has stopped. To find out more: https://www.thesecretspain.com Day 32 Quiz and crazies It is day 32 of our Spanish lockdown, three good legs cat managed to have at least a couple of his fits before breakfast. They have the look of an epileptic fit but are caused by him catching the painful part of his hip. Last night we watched a great deal of television, we don’t usually binge watch anything. We caught a bit of Paul O’Grady looking after some poor sick dog that seemed to have a similar problem to three good legs cat. The dog had an operation to remove the piece of hip that was causing him pain, and was much better. Normally we would go to the vet and sort out an operation, but only emergency visits to the vet are allowed and our neighbour Lena was stopped by the Guardia taking her dog to the vet as she went to the vet in Almuñecar which isn’t our local town. So the cat will have to wait to restrictions are lifted enough to get him to the vet.. it is a daily worry though. The ITV drama “Quiz” was on, fascinating and well produced, it told the story of the Major and the coughing cheat that might have won him a million pounds on Millionaire back in 2001. It did remind us both of the days on radio when we wrote quizzes. I must have written at least ten thousand questions over the year we did a daily quiz. The cheats, the quiz crazies and the downright stupid took part. It was a hard job to research the questions, get the mix right of different types of questions on a wide variety of subjects. Contestants had to answer as many questions over sixty seconds as they could, highest score went on to a £100,000 prize live in the studio. The prize was insured by one of those game companies. It consisted of 300 envelopes and the contestant had to think of a number and that numbered envelope would be opened with a one in three hundred chance of winning. On one particular evening we had a listener who had done very well and was through to the final. I greeted him at reception took him upstairs to the studios, got him coffee and ran through the process with him. We also videoed the whole thing for security and to use on the, then new social media of YouTube. We encouraged contestants to talk over their decision making process, he had two choices in mind, number 32 which was the door number of his childhood home and number 24 his girlfriend’s lucky number. In the end he chose 32 – he opened the envelope and bad luck no prize. The Host, the lovely Gary King said “Why don’t you open envelope number 24, your girlfriends lucky number.” He tore the envelope open and just stared at it. I was behind the glass watching and notice him go ashen grey and start to sway. He was quite a big guy and the thought of him passing out under the studio table was quite a worry. “Are you OK?” said Gary, the guy pushed the paper over to him .. it read congratulations you have won £100,000. It made great radio, we went to an ad break and I had to physically help him out the studio by now he was a mass of sweat, I got someone to get him some water. I felt terrible, this poor guy, I knew our Programme Director would be thrilled because it was such good radio. But in the process, we had pretty much ruined this man’s life. I asked the crumpled wreck that was now sitting in the sofa if he wanted anything. He murmured “need a drink, need a drink.” “Here you go.” I said passing him the water. “No I need a f**** drink, C**** she will kill me, what am I going to do?” he started whimpering. “I will get you a car and you can go anywhere you want in London and drown your sorrows.” ..more whimpering but he nodded his head. I called Lewis Day, “get me a cab asap.” Within five minutes a Mercedes was waiting outside. I helped him into the cab… and never saw the poor chap ever again. Looking back I should have felt bad for him, but over the months we had, had some hideous contestants who frankly ruined my baby. It was my mechanic.. the rules of the quiz, and I received a constant barrage of Emails from listeners correcting, usually wrongly, the answers on the card. It was a real insight into the dark world of the quizzers. Day 32 and I haven’t achieved that much, despite sitting here at the computer all day. I have managed to listen to The Ryan Pyle Podcast our new clients work, he is a very interesting man who spends his life as a nomad; extreme trekking around the world.. well nomadic except for a BBC TV film crew in tow with him. I am really looking forward to working with him, he is stuck in a hotel room in Istanbul at the moment trying not to go too crazy. I spoke to our lovely Spanish neighbour this morning, shouting from our garden to her window, she says. “The kids are going crazy, they go from running around to total boredom, I don’t know what to do.” It is sending us all crazy but if the world can hold its breath just a bit longer we can at least prevent the health services collapsing. In the short term drugs that can help treat the virus are starting to be trialled and maybe we are only a year or so away from a vaccine.. before we all go crazy.

1.(a)The BBC news goes steadily worse....we have an American President meeting up with a Korean leader to try to stop a world war...and doing a good job...but that's not good enough for the BBC...they have to find every possible negative point....questioning the whole thing and over dramatising an important event. ...speaking of which we have blanket reporting on the anniversary of the Grenfell fire...which was a terrible disaster last year and I can't imagine what the residents are going through...but why display their grief all over the news....what good is that doing?...then it's on to the stabbings and muggings in various parts of the country....why do we need to see this on national news...what is the point?...is there nothing POSITIVE going on in the world???....they should try featuring those who can do something about the mayhem instead of glorifying it all. (b)Then we have the World Cup.....90 minutes of football spread over the whole night...with pundits boring us to death...either side of which we have baking competitions and soaps which simply provide employment for washed up actors and pop stars plus other unwatchable trivia. The BBC have several channels which they could easily use for those who want to watch tripe ... but the I suppose they would have to find decent stuff to put on the main channel...which they are obviously incapable of doing....AND CHARGE ME A LICENCE FEE !!!!! 2.And the other channels are no better...with their "reality" programmes like Love Island and Made in Wherever...which is the lowest form of entertainment....not to mention Over 50's Dating...or Blind Date with Paul O'Grady which is as bad as it gets....I am now reduced to watching drama series on Netflix....John Logi Bird must be turning in his grave. 3.It's pretty obvious the ladies are taking over the world....bikinis are now banned in the Miss America contest....and we have to be very careful how we look at a woman...especially if she is wearing a revealing low cut dress with 75% of her boobs on display WHICH SHE IS ENTITLED TO WEAR (before the feminists start shouting)...and we have to be careful holding a door open for them in case we are being sexist....and now "upskirting" was going to be a criminal offence....like it is in Scotland (unless I suppose it's up a BLOKES kilt...which would probably be O.K.).....however this has been thrown out by our wonderful government....I wonder what percentage of blokes want a photo of a pair of knickers....I would guess 0.000001%.....it's a sad situation for the none feminist ladies who get tarred with the same brush....they are even talking about same sex dancing on "Strictly Come Dancing".....definitely time to switch off. 4.Last week we discussed tattoos ... and we failed to see the point...I feel the same about beards....some lads can get away with a five o'clock shadow but the full beard looks ridiculous....and it is the craze at the moment....so if you want to be trendy you have to sport a container of curry and dried beer attached to your chin...I know I'm old but get real fellas....then we have those who take the character route with the wide brimmed hat and handlebar moustache and long scarf around their necks...adding about 20 years to themselves...do they need to be noticed that much?....strange. ...and finally.... Prince Charlie has been a bit upstaged lately by his lad and his bird....so he has announced he wants an electric car to save the environment from global warming....yes your majesty...whatever. 5.The song this week is called "On Behalf Of The Lads" and is a light hearted look at a brave stance on men's behalf....it was written for local comedian Tom Pepper who recorded it and used to sing it to Pauline Daniels when they appeared together....needless to say Pauline had the answer which she sang back to him....this was in the days when comedy was funny and enjoyed by an audience with a sense of humour.

The song this week is called "What Happened To Julie" and ..I'm sending it because I recently received a contract from a company in the States who promote songs......when I get to the small print this is going to cost me.... The London fire is still dominating the news... this material should never have passed safety regulations in the first place...if residents are moved out of existing blocks while they do the work fists are waved and blame cast....as usual the problems are magnified by the negative media... Apparently there was a big march in London regarding the gradual "takeover" of Islam which was not reported on the news......totally confused....apparently there is no money for doctors and nurses....no money for extra police...the interest on my savings is a joke and yet money can be pulled out of the air for the Queen's pay rise of over 2 million?... I watched segments of Glastonbury and enjoyed it... I watched Barry Gibb's full set which was brilliant......he should be knighted....brilliant...DESPITE a totally unnecessary appearance by Jeremy Corbyn....what was HE doing there?......if you are going to get up on a stage SING OR PLAY or GET LOST!!... Still on the music scene I watched Aled Jones on his Sunday morning programme which is always a refreshing break quality....it was brilliant.....the programme was bad enough when Cilla used to present it....she has now been replaced by Paul O'Grady...go out and buy a black and white telly from the charity shop and see if we can get some decent programmes.

This week Sue Lawley's castaway is the entertainer Paul O'Grady. Best known as the 'Blonde Bombshell', Lily Savage, he's one of the most popular figures on television with his outrageous clothes and wigs. Originally from Tranmere in Birkenhead, Paul worked as a social worker for Camden Council as well as working part time in pubs around London in the 1980s. His talent as a drag artist was discovered at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in South London after he stood in for the compere who'd rung in sick. He got his first big break on Channel 4's Big Breakfast replacing Paula Yates in 1995.
