Were Sampdoria the Greatest One-Off Champions of Serie A?In this episode of By Far The Greatest Team, hosts Graham Dunn and Jamie Rooney and joined by Phil Craig to relive the golden era of Sampdoria between 1988 and 1992—a time when the Genovese club shook up Italian football. The conversation captures the tactical brilliance, offbeat charisma, and enduring legacy of a side that defied the odds and challenged Italy's traditional giants.Takeaways:• Sampdoria's 1990–91 title win was built on defensive discipline and attacking flair.• Vialli and Mancini formed one of Serie A's most iconic partnerships.• Boškov's management style blended humour, discipline, and tactical intelligence.• The club's identity—colourful kits, loyal fans, and bold play—set them apart in Italian football.• The near-miss in the 1992 European Cup Final against Barcelona remains a poignant moment.• Sampdoria's rise and fall reflect the volatility of football success and the impact of strong leadership.• Their legacy lives on in Football Italia nostalgia and 90s football culture.

In 1959, Anti-Americanism surged in the UK. England seethed over America's treatment of its Prime Minister who was smacked down for daring to use diplomacy to resolve the crisis over divided Germany. In 1959 England also fretted over a new American export: the Beatnik. The British foreign office forcefully responded with a report advocating for “ an increased effort in the field of press, radio and television in the U.K. to say the right kind of things about the Americans.” This is the very moment Kenneth Tynan was commissioned to make a documentary for British Television about American Non-conformism and Dissent. We take a close look at one of the Cold War's most bizarre and inspired artifacts of Anti Anti-American propaganda. Shownotes: Laura Bradley writes on Brecht and German theater. Kenneth Tynan's documentary aired on January 27th, 1960 and then was supposedly erased (it wasn't). Andrew Jameson Having grown up in the swimming pool, Andy's soul is and always will be as an international/Olympic athlete (bronze medalist). He has had and really enjoyed three distinct careers, as an international athlete, the "Voice of Swimming" on British Television in Great Britain for the last 35 years, and as an Investment Banker. He is currently the longest serving BBC swimming commentator. Andy loves seeing and helping people deliver their best self, both at work, and in life in general. Andy's 3 mindset messages: Have a goal, and make it HUGE Have a go, you never know what might happen Always try to do a little bit more than you are asked, a little bit better than they expect. The enemy of “Great" is “Good" The food Andy wanted to be surprised, or try my homeland traditional food. I decided to make 'Koldunai', a dumpling filled with meat, served with fried bacon and onion sauce, accompanied by a dollop of sour-cream. There are variety of recipes online, simply pick a choose the one you prefer! After filming, Andy tried them and really enjoyed the taste. I was pleased!

Rewind -- British screenwriter Ian Mackintosh's plane went missing on July 7, 1979, nineteen days before his thirty-ninth birthday, over the Gulf of Alaska. What happened remains a mystery. Join us as we tell the story of Lieutenant Commander Hamish Ian Mackintosh, a British Royal Navy officer, a writer of thriller novels, and a screenwriter for British television. Ian's series, THE SANDBAGGERS, was groundbreaking. The New York Times said "the best spy series in television history." Ian MacKintosh was among the first writers to present espionage realistically and as a sordid series of political struggles, double-crosses, and personality clashes. If you want to read more about Ian Mackintosh, I highly recommend The Life and Mysterious Death of Ian Mackintosh by Robert G. Folsom.

This week Natalie is joined by actress and soap veteran Alex Fletcher to talk all about her journey from 90's child star to soap icon, the importance of sharing stories and the many phases of motherhood. During the chat Alex discusses her route to becoming a professional actor and cites acclaimed writer Russell T Davies as the man who gave her her first job on the hit children's BBC show Why Don't You! She notes how that experience lead her to Brookside Close and working with the likes of Sue Johnston & Ricky Tomlinson and how soaps have cemented themselves as part of the heart of British Television due to their familiarity and ability to tackle hard hitting issues affecting the every day person with warmth and sensitivity. As part of this topic Alex reflects on her favourite storylines over the years which includes Hollyoaks hugely evocative Long Walk Home campaign, centred on women's safety. Later on in the chat Alex reflects on her experience with perimenopause and reveals that it was Davina McCall's powerful documentary Sex, Myths & The Menopause that encouraged her to speak to a doctor about her own symptoms before starting on treatment which she now feels has helped her navigate this new phase. She talks at length about parenting children of different ages and the challenges that brings and how as her daughter takes her A-Levels she's preparing herself for a quieter nest. Alex remarks how it's important for women to share stories through the generations to allow us to feel more prepared for life's changes and how we can pass the knowledge on to our own children. Listen in for an honest, relatable and warm conversation with one of our favourite tv stars.

Chris Packham is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable faces on British Television. He's been a mainstay of the BBC's Natural History programming for nearly 40 years. Alongside this commitment he also currently serves as President for the Bat Conservation Trust and Vice President for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, The Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, Butterfly Conservation, and the RSPCA. In this two-part discussion, David and Chris walk through the New Forest (the site of both their childhoods), and discuss how Chris came to prominence on Television, and then balanced his role there alongside his creative passions and his environmental concerns and campaigns. In search of Chris' favourite Beech, David and Chris set out into the fabric of their lives – the New Forest. In the shade of “…a giant green cathedral, bathed in green light” they discuss the pressures facing one of Britain's favourite national parks, the fact that even Belgium has a wolf-pack, and how over-grazing in the New Forest needs to be resolved for a healthy ecosystem.Closer to home, the big questions are asked: Should Chris' father have helped him boil the head of a Pilot Whale? Should Chris' own parenting skills have involved putting wasps on his step-daughter Megan McCubbin's nose and then making her dissect Roadkill? And should Chris, at 61, climb the 30 foot into a Scots Pine tree to examine an abandoned Osprey nest whilst recording a podcast?!The driving force behind Chris is an obvious one: “I've got to do something, I'm running out of time; I don't want to leave this world in a worse place than I inherited it.” But where does Chris stand on the effectiveness of modern non-violent protest? Is it too little too late? Or is something more dramatic required? Why not become a "Subscription Squirrel" on our Patreon, and help support the production of this podcast? Hosted on Acast. Frankie Vaughan seemed to be constantly present on British Television in 1960s. Mr Moonlight they called him. He had a big voice and a big stage presence, top hat, bow tie and tails. He had many hits during the 1950s and had a brief career in Holywood. Most notably opposite Marilyn Monroe in Lets make Love. Here he gives us The Green door. Lita Rosa- Hernando's Hideaway. Rosa started her stage career at the age of 12. At 24 she was lead female singer with Ted Heath. A strong voice which probably never reached its full potential with the material she was given. Variety is the spice of life on Forgotten Songs. So next up is Tom Wright with Driving into Glasgae in a sour milk cairt. Its billed as traditional on the Beltona label. It's not but was written in 1914 by Tom Johnstone for the comedian J.C macDonald. It's in broad Scots. Two from a F.S favourite, Kay Starr- Too busy and If you love me. Dickie Valentine was a popular crooner in Britain through the 50s. Like many British singers he existed on a diet of American covers. He died in a car crash in 1971. Joan Regan and The Squadronaires give us Ricochet. The Squadronaires were the R.A.F big band. There is some confusion of her birth name and exactly where she was born. Again she did a lot of American covers through the 50s but her U.S recorded version of Don't talk to me of love become a Northern Soul classic. Languishing in the F.S colection has been this piece of US Billbord chart history from Tommy Edwards. It's all in the game was the first number one by an African American in the chart. Released in 1958 it was the biggest hit from this singer- song writer. He sadly died young at 47. Frank Ferera with Beautiful Love. He was a Hawaiian music pioneer. We go all posh with Air on a G string with Norbert Wethmar on violin. The only information I can be certain of about him are two references from The Radio Times in the late 1930s. Two performances with the BBC Orchestra. Florrie Forde was the Australian born grand Dame of British Music hall. Whose career spanned Victorian variety theatre to entertaining the troops in Aberdeen in 1940. She died after the performance, aged 64. Her songs included- Hold out your hand you naughty boy, Down at the old Bull and Bush and I do like to be by the seaside. Here she gives us When we were strolling around town. Maurice Winnick was another Manchester born musical child prodigy. As a teenager he was a band leader on a transatlantic liner. He had a succesful career through the 1930s and 40s. He died in 1960. He plays a lovely version of The Waltz you saved for me. The Platters need no introduction and neither does the song- Smoke gets in your eyes. Okay its not forgotten but how often do you hear it directly from the original 78?

British screenwriter, Ian Mackintosh's plane went missing on July 7, 1979, nineteen days before his thirty-ninth birthday, over the Gulf of Alaska. What happened still remains a mystery. Join us as we tell the story of Lieutenant Commander Hamish Ian Mackintosh, a British Royal Navy officer, a writer of thriller novels, and a screenwriter for British television. Ian's series, THE SANDBAGGERS was groundbreaking. The New York Times said "the best spy series in television history." Ian MacKintosh was among the first writers to present espionage realistically and as a sordid series of political struggles, double-crosses, and personality clashes. If you would like to read more about Ian Mackintosh I highly recommend The Life and Mysterious death of Ian Mackintosh by Robert G. https://notesonfilm1.com/2022/05/16/thinking-aloud-about-film-pixote-hector-babenco-brazil-1981/ We're both glad to find that PIXOTE retains all of the power we remember it for from decades ago when we first saw it. A realist political film whose aim it is to reveal conditions of existence as a pre-condition for creating change. It's a film highly judgmental of systemic corruption, particularly as it effects children, but very open and accepting about different ways of being, with one of the earliest, most rounded and complex characterisations of a teen trans character either of us remember seeing. In this podcast we discuss the achievements of the film; it's realist 'documentary' style, the extraordinary performances from the children and from Marilia Pera as the ageing prostitute, the power of its imagery; how we suspect it would be even harder to make and show today then it was then; we discuss the context in which the film was shown on British Television, we compare it to Buñuel's LOS OLVIDADOS/ THE YOUNG AND THE DAMNED, Fernano Meirelles and Kátia Lund's CITY OF GOD, and Alar Clarke's SCUM; and we discuss the racial mix of the group of children and its significance.
First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 3rd 2022 Dennis Potter is considered by many to be one of the all-time great playwrights who was working in British Television during the twentieth century, and for many fans of his work, his masterpiece if you will, standing alongside such memorable productions as PENNIES FROM HEAVEN, LIPSTICK ON YOUR COLLAR, BLACKEYES, the NIGEL BARTON PLAYS, CASANOVA, BRIMSTONE AND TREACLE, BLUE REMEMBERED HILLS and so many others, as well as the posthumously produced duet of KARAOKE and COLD LAZARUS, was THE SINGING DETECTIVE, the award-winning six-part serial, controversial in its day, first broadcast by the BBC in 1986, an incredible thirty-six years ago. The serial tells the complex tale of one PHILIP MARLOW (as played by MICHAEL GAMBON), who is a writer of detective fiction stricken by a crippling psoriasis which has isolated him from work, friends and family. He is trapped by his illness into long-term care on an acute hospital ward, where his anger, the daily humiliations his illness brings with it, and bitterness and lack of trust in the motivations of his ex-wife, cause memories of his childhood in the Forest of Dean, hallucinations from his present circumstances, and his attempts to rewrite one of his detective novels, THE SINGING DETECTIVE in his mind, to all combine in a brilliant swirling maelstrom of storytelling which remains as devastatingly original and iconic all these years later. With the memorable use of several of the old remembered “cheap” songs, those songs that “remind us of the tremendous feelings we had when we first heard them”, which are lip-synched in a series of devastating set-pieces, and a multi-layered narrative in which the characters from his past and present, alongside the kind of ciphers who inhabit the typical film noir, start to interact in his fevered imagination, events in both his real life and his childhood start to mingle to create an astonishingly complex series. My regular co-host SANDY McGREGOR, along with his pal TIM BOURNE (who joined us a few weeks ago to talk about THE PRISONER), got together online to talk about THE SINGING DETECTIVE. So… With our elbows at the ready, our pots of grease on the bedside cabinet, and the winds of villainy blowing a well-remembered tune or three on the breeze, we travel back in time and ask “What's the story? Who's the dame…?” PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. When the coronavirus summarily shut down the world in 2020, we were all sent home to figure how to live, work and play from a distance. Within weeks millions learned to use digital platforms to connect to work, family, school, and friends. Streaming services like Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix benefited greatly. In one year, subscriptions during the pandemic rose over 30% and increased to 1 billion subscribers worldwide. On this episode, guest host Dr. Melanye Price chats with her favorite content viewing partner, twin sister, Melynda Price, along with cultural critic Jeff Yang, who's co-host of the podcast, They Call Us Bruce and author of RISE: A Pop History of Asian America from the ‘90s to Now. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on November 14th 2021 In this week's VISION ON SOUND I am very pleased to welcome back an old friend of the show, who's taken some time out of his extraordinarily busy schedule to talk to me, the actor, comedian, prolific podcaster and all-round good egg, TOBY HADOKE. It's been around a year since we last spoke to TOBY on VISION ON SOUND and for him it has indeed been quite an astonishing year. He's launched a trio of podcasts looking at the subject of the television series DOCTOR WHO from various points of view, all of which go out under the banner of TOBY HADOKE'S TIME TRAVELS and can be found via TOBYHADOKE DOT COM. Alongside those he's contributed to the Value Added Material on several DVD releases, written scripts for both national radio and television, kept his weekly comedy club going throughout various national lockdowns, and, of course, taken on the role of FERGUS DUNFORD in one of the highest profile programmes on British Television, CORONATION STREET. In this edition we talk about all these things, including a chat about what it's like joining the cast of a national institution, as well as gaining some insight into the mechanics of turning part of your own home into a television studio, and, as a lifelong DOCTOR WHO fan, we also discuss his reaction to the announcement of the return of RUSSELL T DAVIES to his role as showrunner. This extended cut also includes a much longer edit of a fascinating discussion we had about keeping the comedy club MALARKEY running during the lockdowns caused by the global pandemic which I had to trim because the conversation ran far longer than our time slot on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL would allow and, sadly, as it was the least "telly" themed part of the conversation, it was the easiest (and also the most difficult!) to trim down, so I hope you can appreciate it far better here in its uncut form. It's easy to see why Bruce Forsyth nicknamed Tess Daly 'Miss Sunshine'. With age defying beauty, a dazzling smile and a disposition to match, she's a darling of British Television. But boy, has she worked to get there. From mooching around the streets of Salford to modelling in Paris, Barcelona, Tokyo and New York, she has climbed dizzying heights to Strictly stardom. In this pre-lockdown tea break, Tess reflects on her roots, her work ethic and redefining the confines of 'age appropriate'. She reveals what it felt like to go from 'TV babe' to 'geriatric' presenter a day after hitting 40 and why beauty is always best placed on the inside. But now, at 51, what's next for Tess? How does she keep her children grounded? And how many Cadbury's Twirls does she really keep in her car? Plus, we hear tips on how to keep your teeth in shape post-menopause from dental expert, Elaine Tilling.
