'This looks like death by a thousand cuts. We're in a doom loop!'Former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng reacts to a new report showing tax rises in the Autumn are an inevitability and makes his prediction for Labour's economic policy leading up to the next election.. Kwasi Kwarteng reflects on what went wrong. The former Chancellor joins Ed Balls to talk through the decisions behind the Truss mini-budget - from bypassing the OBR to what he now calls its “real intellectual failing.” He explains why the Bank of England's intervention “killed the government,” and why he believes his sacking was no coincidence.Kwarteng also looks ahead, urging the Conservative Party and Kemi Badenoch to focus on unity, and warning Rachel Reeves about the political cost of trying to rein in spending.Plus, Ed and George turn to political speechwriting. Who writes the big speeches? What makes them stick? And how do you find the right words for someone else? From Trump rallies to Gordon Brown's “no time for a novice,” the pair give us a peek inside the craft of effective political communication. To get episodes early and ad-free, join Political Currency Gold or the Kitchen Cabinet:
Former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng delivers talks about his 49 days in the Treasury in this interview with Mark. He discusses why the UK is trapped in a doom loop of high taxes and low growth, shares his thoughts on Brexit's benefits and explains why panic killed his economic reforms. He gives his thoughts on Trump's policies, Britain's energy crisis, and what it really takes to succeed in business and politics. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kwasi shares how a network of unelected civil servants and regulatory bodies has accumulated enormous power over the past 25 years, often working against elected government policies and maintaining the status quo regardless of which party is in power. The UK is trapped in a vicious cycle where high government spending forces higher taxes, which kills growth, leading to even higher taxes. The government now spends £1 trillion annually, all ultimately funded by the private sector. Kwasi admits three critical mistakes of the mini budget, moving too fast, cutting taxes without reducing spending and panicking when markets reacted negatively. The energy price intervention alone cost massive amounts in a brief discussion. Public sector spending cannot drive economic growth since it's funded by taxing the private sector. Real growth comes from encouraging entrepreneurship and commercial activity, not government investment. Brexit provides essential flexibility, despite implementation challenges, leaving the EU gives Britain the freedom to negotiate independent trade deals and avoid being bound by policies designed for 27 other countries with different economic needs. Net zero policies have made UK energy prices among the world's highest, killing industrial competitiveness. The windfall tax on North Sea oil and gas is particularly damaging to energy security and investment. Both in business and politics, success demands unwavering optimism and self-belief. Leaders must project confidence and energy, as people won't follow those who expect failure or constantly blame external factors. BEST MOMENTS "We went too far, too fast, and I think the worst thing you can do when things start going wrong... is when we started to panic." "I said to the officials, I said, look, we've gotta be able to take 50 billion out of the spending. If I said to anyone in this room, you've gotta reduce your spending by 5%... most people should be able to do that." "Our national debt in 2005... was 500 billion. 20 years ago it was 500 billion and now it's 2.7 trillion. It's completely nuts." "The private sector pays for the public sector... someone, ultimately, many people in this room, I imagine, has to pay for it." "If you don't believe in yourself, why should anyone else believe in you?" "I was surrounded by all walks of life." Live from Dekmantel, the New York native talks about how the Bronx shaped her taste in music, her long-time love of radio and blowing up on the international DJ circuit. Gabrielle Kwarteng is a rising talent that you may have seen on stages at major festivals and clubs around the world. Her unique sound is dynamic and house-heavy, incorporating elements of acid, techno and everything in between. In this interview recorded live at Dekmantel, she discussed her upbringing in a Ghanaian household in the Bronx, and how that environment (and the neighborhood itself) moulded her taste in music. The community she grew up in was culturally diverse, filled with the sounds of reggaeton, bachata, merengue and freestyle from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and beyond. As both of her parents moved from West Africa, she was introduced to a diet of highlife music and jazz from a young age. Kwarteng's taste began to expand when she began exploring New York's record stores. Fast forward to university, and the aspiring DJ became deeply involved in her school radio station, which she describes as a turning point and a revelation. She speaks movingly about the abiding power that radio has had in her life—she continues to be involved with stations like Refuge Worldwide and The Lot, and soon NTS Radio, where she'll hold a residency beginning in 2025. She also talks about what it's like to be a female minority in the music industry, the experience of having her career take off at such rapid speed upon relocating to Europe and the importance of summoning optimism no matter the circumstances. They discuss Rachel Reeves' £40 billion tax hike and explore the implications of a cashless society whilst Kwarteng also gives his thoughts and insight from his time at the Treasury. His candid analysis of socialism, entrepreneurship, and global economic trends makes this episode essential for anyone interested in understanding where Britain's economy is heading! Kwasi Kwarteng REVEALS: · Labour's recent budget represents the largest tax hike since 1993, with £25 billion coming from employers' national insurance contributions · Why the budget could stifle economic growth and job creation · Why China could potentially become the world's next reserve currency power · The UK and other European countries are caught in a "doom loop" where slow growth leads to higher taxes, which further reduces growth potential. · Modern socialism still operates on Marxist principles of class warfare, setting workers against employers, despite their shared interests in economic success · Why the shift toward a cashless society poses significant risks to personal freedom and financial privacy while making budgeting more difficult for individuals. · The housing crisis in Britain requires significant planning reform, but political resistance and short-term thinking have prevented meaningful progress · World Wars I and II fundamentally transformed the relationship between state and citizen, leading to permanently expanded government spending and taxation BEST MOMENTS "You're never going to get the growth in the next two or three years that they need. And the risk for them is that in two years time, they come up with more tax raises, which will damage the economy more." "If we all refuse to shop anywhere where they didn't take cash, they would all take cash." "The Chinese have got tons of gold, I mean metaphorically and really, and they could say, okay, now not saying they will do this, but there's a world in which they could say, right, we're gonna back the rebi with gold." And we know a lot of young people don't know this, but a lot of people our age know what a socialist government, what socialist ideas mean." As the British Conservatives head to what may be the end of 14 years in power, One Decision speaks to some of the most influential voices from Britain's ruling party on what's gone wrong, what's gone right, and what lies ahead for the UK and its allies in the West. In the first of these conversations, Julia Macfarlane and former MI6 Chief Sir Richard Dearlove speak to the longtime rising star of the right and former Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng, who oversaw a brief period of huge instability with a controversial package of tax cuts and spending that sent the markets into turmoil. Kwarteng reflects on the disastrous 'mini-budget' that caused him to get sacked and ended Liz Truss's Premiership, if the Tories will lose the upcoming elections, and how his party has handled recent issues of racism and division in an increasingly fractious time.
The former Chancellor of the Exchequer explains that the Tory prime minister has been “liberated” to tackle the UK's tax burden. But will he in the next budget? Kwarteng joins this week's episode to talk taxes, the "mini-budget" and what he thinks the Tory party should do before the next election. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Born and raised in New York but now transplanted to Berlin, @gabriellekwarteng has quickly become a Panorama Bar regular known for her eclectic radio shows. The move to Europe widened the scope of her DJ sets which tend to be high energy and punchy with plenty of techno, while on the airwaves she is likely to serve up a mix of boogie, Afro-disco, and neo-soul. That broad approach no doubt stems from growing up in the musical melting pot that is the Bronx, but also from childhood summers - and later a year studying abroad - in London. Add in a desire to champion the classic Black American genres and you have the foundations of the Kwarteng sound. All this is reflected in this week's mix which traverses global genres with effortless enthusiasm. Hefty bass cuts and weighty rhythms build into acid-tinged workouts, sounds of the diaspora spread across the course of 70 minutes and energy levels drop even when the mood changes. It's a great snapshot of a DJ at ease with worldly sounds and the ability to thread them all together into a communal dance floor experience.

Spend enough time at (or listening to) The Lot Radio, and chances are all you'll find Gabrielle Kwarteng. Even though she lives in Berlin now, the American DJ wears New York on her sleeve, repping for the station that helped make her name (she won a Mixcloud award for "Best Eclectic Show" pretty early on). Sure, you could call her sound eclectic—she jumps from house to Afrobeat to Jersey club and beyond—but it seems like "intuitive" might be a better word. She has the taste of someone raised by musical parents on a diverse diet of albums, of someone who eats, breathes and sleeps records. Buoyed by her success in the US, Kwarteng moved to Berlin in 2019, not too long before the pandemic. Like so many other up-and-coming DJs, her momentum almost stalled as a result. But here we are in 2022 and Kwarteng is more successful than ever, with a string of upcoming festival dates highlighting her wide, transatlantic appeal. Her RA Podcast is equally welcoming, with a taste for house music that feels perfectly pitched between the classic and the new. You can hear an old soul, but she also has cutting-edge tracks from the likes of NIkki Nair, and a gutsy, fantastic edit of "Can You Feel It?" by Tom Carruthers. The mix also reflects her recently getting back in touch with her roots, featuring smatterings of East Coast club music and ballroom, all wrapped up with an exquisite finishing touch courtesy of a long Moodymann play-out.
