Today, in honour of the late Paul Soles, I re-release this conversation I had with him 3 years ago just on the heels of him winning best actor for his role in My 90-Year-Old Roommate. Paul is a Canadian Treasure and I feel so lucky to have sat a spoken with him for as long as I did collecting gems of wisdom. A true class act. Sitting down with Actor/ T.V. Personality/ Voice- Over Artist, Paul Soles, was a real treat for me. Paul was full of such life and good humour that it made for an easy discussion about the ups and downs and ins and outs of perusing a career as a performance artist. Aside from having an incredibly diverse and robust career, Paul witnessed the progression and development of both theatre and television from the beginning in Canada which allowed him to have a far broader scope and understanding of how the entertainment industry works and to have fascinating insights and stories on being a Canadian born artist that worked at home and internationally. One of the things that struck me about Paul was the immense of gratitude he has for the work he does. Paul is 86 and still working. Just a few weeks ago Paul won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor in a Digital Program or Series for his work in the hit CBC Comedy My 90- Year-Old Roommate. Paul seems to speak with the same level of enthusiasm as someone who is starting out on their journey as an artist and that truly left a mark on me. Many times through the interview he proclaimed how lucky he has been to have been given the opportunities to work and how blessed he has been to work with the calibre of actors over the course of his career. In his words, “more luck than good management”. I am sure talent had a little something to do with it. In this episode, we discuss how he got his start as a voice-over artist and actor, what is one tip he has received throughout his career that has stuck with him and proved to be useful, what his most memorable moment has been of his career and what he believes draw performers to want to perform in the first place and so much more! A little about Paul : Soles is widely known as the voice of Hermey the misfit elf in Rankin/Bass' Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer from 1964. He also voiced Marvel superhero Spider-Man in the original animated television series also from the 1960s, and he played "The Lawbreaker" on the CBC panel quiz show This Is the Law in the 1970s, and played Costas Stavros on the Canadian soap opera Riverdale. In 2001, Soles took over the role of Shylock the Jew in the Stratford Festival of Canada production of The Merchant of Venice after Al Waxman, who was originally scheduled to play the part, died.[3] Soles played Stanley the pizza shop owner in The Incredible Hulk (2008), and his other film appearances have included roles in Ticket to Heaven (1981), Just the Way You Are (1984) and The Gunrunner (1989) opposite Kevin Costner. He also played Danny, the Montreal Customs House janitor in the 2001 crime thriller The Score. Soles won a 2006 Gemini Award for his role in the television series Terminal City,[4] and a 2017 Canadian Screen Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Digital Production for My 90-Year-Old Roommate.[5]
Mike chats with Rob Cowan about his father Bernard Cowan, his cousin Paul Soles, his comedy work with Rick Moranis and his radio career at CKFH and CJCL 1430 where he worked with such radio vets as Bob McCown, Andy Barrie, Mark Hebscher, and Jim Brady.
Paul Soles has passed at the age of 90. He is the first person to portray Spider-Man. He has also starred in the MCU. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dalanel/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dalanel/support

The role of the reindeer who saved Christmas was played by a young Canadian woman! This is the story Behind the Christmas Hit…Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer #BehindTheChristmasHits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! The song Rudolph was written by Johnny Marks and first recorded by Gene Autry in 1949…but one of the reasons the song endures is because of the television special produced by Rankin Bass Productions in 1964. It has been broadcast on network television every year since, making it the longest continuously-running Christmas special of all time. The animation for the story of Santa’s newest reindeer was done in Tokyo and most of the voice work was produced in Canada…at the RCA studios in Toronto. And the cast was virtually all-Canadian too. Hermy was voiced by Paul Soles, who would go on to be the voice of Spider-Man in the 1967 cartoon series. Yukon Cornelius was voiced by Larry Man – you might remember him as “the boss” in a series of TV commercials in the 80’s & 90’s for Bell. And…much like Bart Simpson…the voice of Rudolph was performed by a female actor. Her name: Billie Mae Richards.Billie Mae sadly passed away in 2010 but we have some archive interview footage with our own Drew Savage! Behind The Christmas Hits is Presented by Pizza Pizza! Today I get to release this episode with a good friend of mine, Josh Shultz! Josh is a Writer/Filmmaker/Teacher and has some pretty exciting things happening at the moment. I believe as this episode airs the last episode of a comedic web series, My 90 -Year- Old Roommate, releases from the CBC that Josh co- created and wrote with Ethan Cole. That means you can binge watch them all at once! I am always excited to support and take in new projects but I have to admit there is a little part of me that gets nervous when a friend has a new project. I feel the stakes are higher for some reason. I not only liked My 90- Year- Old Roommate. I freaking loved it! I had a thought I am sure a lot of people have when they watch, “How has this not been done before?”. It is a simple idea that has been brilliantly executed. It's a story about a misguided millennial mooch( Ethan Coles ) who moves in with his 90-year-old widowed grandfather (Paul Soles) and they explore the modern world together through two different generations eyes. In this episode, we talk about how he got introduced to the film and television industry and how it eventually lead to writing and making films, how he is learning to very deliberate in choosing the projects he becomes involved with and how it is becoming increasingly important to him to see ideas through to completion. We also discuss the process of what it was like to take a loose format youtube sketch comedy bit to being picked up by the CBC and developing it into the web- series My 90-Year-Old-Roommate. Josh Shultz started out in the film industry as a child actor, working with the likes of Eugene Levy, Hayden Christensen, and the guy from that Nissan commercial. A graduate of Concordia University, specializing in Film Production, Josh’s films have been screened at numerous festivals, and his comedy shorts have been featured on The Comedy Network and Funny or Die. In 2013, Josh co-created the web series Explaining Things to My Grandfather. The videos have accumulated over 3-million views online, were featured on The Huffington Post, Mashable and Digg, and also landed twice on the front page of Reddit. This project led to Josh's current series, My 90-Year-Old Roommate, which can be viewed on CBC Comedy's YouTube Channel. Josh currently has a feature film, a television series and an animated show in development. Follow Josh! Twitter: @shultzjosh Watch My 90-Year- Old Roommate!

Kevin and Kornflake celebrate 1983 with a fast car (maybe even faster than KITT) and the top ten songs from 34 years ago this week. (It's a weird mix of new wave, country, rockabilly, hat-free men, and Jim Steinman... so much Jim Steinman...) Also: At Granite State Comicon, we found old friends, artists, costumers, Spice Girls, Beavis, Daria, and drag-hens. (Drag-hens are dragon/chicken hybrids, and they're amazing.) Meanwhile it's almost time for another favorite convention, Super Megafest! It's October 21-22 in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and the guest list includes the Bionic Man AND Bionic Woman, stars from Battlestar Galactica and The Flash, comedians, wrestlers... and Paul Soles, who was HERMEY THE ELF in the 1964 Rudolph cartoon! Be there. Plus: At the beginning of the summer, we tried to pick the winning teams for the new Battle of the Network Stars. Now it's time to check the results. Did our strategy of betting on Greg Brady, Daisy Duke, Potsie, Blair, and Tootie pay off? (Here's a hint: No.)

We all remember the original 1967 Spider-Man cartoon (you know the one with the catchy theme song) but did you know that all the dialogue for the series was recorded in Toronto and Paul Soles, the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, is not only still around, but still acting at 86-years-young as the star of the new CBC Comedy web series, My 90-year-old Roommate? The legend comes by to spill secrets from the production of Spider-Man, including the fact that the voice acting company for all the original Marvel cartoons – Spider-Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Marvel Superheroes and more – was originally put together during the production of the Rankin/Bass stop-motion animation classic Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer where Paul starred as Hermey the Elf. Fast forward into the 2000s and Paul inadvertently found himself a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to a live-action bit part in 2008's The Incredible Hulk and a prior relationship with star Edward Norton.
