Many people think that Lethal Weapon with Mel Gibson is a Christmas movie. This week I retro review a Mel Gibson movie, Fatman, that leaves no doubt that it's a Christmas movie. I mean, Gibson plays Santa Claus so come on! Now this isn't your fantastical, wondrous North Pole that you see in Rudolph, The Red Nose Reindeer or Elf. Gibson's Santa lives on a very northerly remote farm location instead in this more grounded, brilliantly bizarre and violent Christmas tale. Santa and Mrs. Claus are falling on some hard financial times with all the money they're spending on making and delivering gifts to all the kids worldwide. In comes the U.S. military to provide them a new lucrative opportunity to make their not-so-merry money mayhem go away. Santa has to wrestle with his convictions in deciding on accepting these new “milk and cookies” from them. As if that weren't enough, he has no idea that a kid, who rightfully got coal for Christmas, has hired a hitman to kill him. The hitman, played by the fantastic Walton Goggins, also has a certain bone to pick with jolly ol Saint Nick. Woe to anyone that gets in his way in his mission, including Santa's elves. Is it worth you delaying your Christmas shopping to watch Fatman? Check out this review to find out! Fatman also stars Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Chance Hurstfield, Susanne Sutchy, Robert Bockstael, Michael Dyson, Deborah Grover, Ellison Grier Butler, Eric Woolfe, Lynne Adams and Ekaterina Baker. Eliot's line from 'East Coker', "Old men ought to be explorers", never gets... old. It is inspiring, counter-intuitive, awesome, and, yes, within our reach. And everyone's -- not just that of "old men". But I never understood it -- really -- until I met Los Straitjackets: their music, I mean. How did Los Straitjackets "shine a light" (CCR) on Thomas Stearns Eliot? Well, they did so because it doesn't take many listens to realize that Los Straitjackets are often at their best in the last 40 seconds of each track. At first you hear a fairly predictable riff on a familiar song, but then, in the last verse -- sometimes in the last 28 seconds -- they explode, and the song goes through the roof. Listen to "Christmas Weekend", which begins this cast; or "Linus & Lucy", or "Fury", or "Tempest" (which ends the cast), or "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah", or "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer (!), or... About 70% percent of their songs catch fire at the very end. Now, if I want to be a T. S. Eliot kind of a man -- and play my life like Los Straitjackets play their songs -- what do I do? What makes this happen in one life, such as yours or mine? The answer to the question comes in -- are you ready? -- the last third of this podcast. The images are (1) putting your life on the right foot (i.e., death/resurrection) rather than on the wrong foot (i.e., action/consequence); and (2) assimilating the negativities of your "Voyage of Life" (Thomas Cole, 1842), which can only really happen if you are in the presence of the Compassionate Christ (Bertel Thorwaldsen/Church of the Advent, Birmingham, 1966). Without God's Mercy (as in "The Green Pastures", 1930) it can't happen. Within God's Mercy, it can happen. In the blink of an eye. I never met T.S. Eliot. Would sure love to have. But I did meet Los Straitjackets! Really did. They all autographed my copy of their single, "The Sox Are Rockin'". One's still speechless. Wouldn't you be?

When it comes to making an impact in the world of music, it often takes a lot of time to become an “overnight” success, and success knows no zip code. But, when you love to play, you play!Haverhill native Brian McGravey has released his new album “Feather in the Wind.” McGravey was a recent guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program. McGravey has been playing in bands and composing music for the past 20 years—some of his work is in the form of production music that can be heard on dozens of TV channels including HBO, Nickelodeon and the History Channel.“It's really kind of a dream come true, and it's usually not that I go and listen, or I just hear it randomly, ‘cause I usually don't know ahead of time when it's going to be used, or where, but I use the website called TuneSat, and basically it will detect any music that's used. I can later go in and watch the episodes, so I found out. I'm on some Netflix things. I could go through the big list of it, but it's quite a big list,” he says.McGravey has been playing the piano since he was 10 years old when he strung together a few notes from “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” before taking lessons and eventually majoring in music at college.“I studied music business at UMass Lowell—great, great school. I learned all kinds of stuff about classical music, jazz and music theory and did a lot of writing, a lot of ensembles, jazz, big bands, orchestras.”McGravey found himself as a busy musician while he was in high school, but was able to make a few school events.“My senior year was the only time I could fit it into my schedule, but I was in the jazz band and we kind of combined with the concert band that year, part of both of those. I was always doing the talent shows every year. Funny story, my old band Paradox, two times during talent shows, I was a bass guitar player. I wasn't even a piano player of that band. You know how back in the days those old classic rock things like Jimi Hendrix smashes his guitar. So, two different times in my high school talent shows I smashed my bass guitar. That's a little bit of a claim to fame there.”McGravey isn't smashing bass guitars these days. He's a member of two busy bands and writing music. Welcome to Day 2309 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom - The Characters of Christmas-9 The Misfits of Christmas – Daily Wisdom Putnam Church Message – 12/24/2023 The Characters of Christmas – The Misfits of Christmas Last week, we looked at the dark side of Christmas Characters as we analyzed Herod, the Monster of Christmas. This week will be a short message as we look at The Misfits of Christmas. I will read part of three verses from the genealogy of Jesus from Matthew Matthew 1, on page 1496, in your Pew Bibles. 3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (whose mother was Tamar). 5 Salmon was the father of Boaz (whose mother was Rahab). Boaz was the father of Obed (whose mother was Ruth). 6 David was the father of Solomon (whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah). I want to highlight four characters from Jesus' family tree that illustrate the upside-down nature of the kingdom of God. All of them are women, which is remarkable in and of itself. Jesus's life and ministry were focused on lifting the oppressed. All are equal before God. As Galatians 3:28 tells us: There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. Typically, Jewish genealogies didn't mention women. They only ever listed men as the heads of their households. Women in the ancient world had little agency and virtually no voice. So, in telling the Christmas story through women like Mary, Elizabeth, and Anna (which we will study next week), Jesus tells us that His kingdom is different. And even in this small and seemingly insignificant detail of listing four women in Jesus' family tree, Matthew is communicating something powerful. It reminds me of the Christmas cartoon Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, where they come across the Island of Misfit Toys. You remember Charlie in the Box. What is the meaning of the Island of Misfit Toys? It is not unlike the story of Christmas. As the story goes on, this menagerie of misfit toys bands together and saves Christmas for the children of the world. The Biblical principle of the story is that no matter how atypical you are, you are valuable in God's eyes and within the church. Together, we can accomplish what seems impossible. To fully grasp these misfits in our passage today, we must understand how poorly women were regarded in the first century. A woman had no legal rights and was utterly subject to her husband's power. According to New Testament scholar Michael Green, a Jewish man “thanked God each day that he had not been created a slave, a Gentile, or a woman.” To put it bluntly, Matthew would be scandalous to put these women's names here. And these weren't just any women. Each one of them carried with them a stigma, an asterisk next to their name every time a faithful Jewish person heard their name read out loud in the temple or the synagogue. The Forgotten Tamar is a name most Jewish people likely wanted to forget. It is an interesting story, but we will leave out most details for tonight's message. And yet here she is,/ in Genesis 38, /first as the wife of a man named...

Ron has a more positive outlook on what Mason Rudolph will do against the Bengals however Starkey does not share the same sentiment. In Episode 137, we continue with part two of our Christmas series. You can resonate with the message if you have been rejected like Rudolph. Seeing how light exposes and black hides, some individuals naturally prefer the latter. People hate it when their faults are brought to light. Seeing the light makes people nervous that they'll be mocked or rejected by their peers.Unfortunately for Rudolph, his glowing red nose caused him to be teased and even shunned by his fellow animals. We all know that at first, they were hostile to his light. Even making fun of him for trying to help others, they mocked his use of his light. The same thing occurs here; we may face ridicule for being ourselves, but we must do it anyhow.Tune in now, and let's go bigger, better, and deeper! SERIOUSLY AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO THOUGHT OF THIS --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cclovinglife/message
December 12 Jesse Gets A New JobAt the end of a not so productive (boo-koo rock-n-roll tunes to due to some spectators) practice, Jesse announces that he has a new job at Western Auto. This is good as his second child should be born in a few months. He will be making more money. Unfortunately, he will also be working nights. He addressed this very lightly, but the band seemed to become very anxious about this latest turn of events. How can you play out at night, and work at the auto store? The other thing bothering some of the band was Jesse's attitude about the songs. It appears that he hates playing anything that is slower than a heart attack. Dave and Kevin elect John to find out the scoop and make sure Jesse is in for the long haul. Some announcements were made: Kevin announces that he has decided to take a break from his current girlfriend (Kim), and Jesse announces the Kickin' Country is booking for July. We need to work on a demo tape as soon as this gig is behind us.December 15 Kevin books a PAYING GigKevin gets our first paying job by singing “Anymore” completely by himself in a bar to a bar owner. It's at the Louisville VFW It's in a week (Friday 12/22/95). We are not ready, but decide to do it anyway (it's only the Louisville VFW). We should get paid around 200-250. The band must squeeze in a Saturday practice. We also decide to throw in a few Christmas tunes to fill in the time. After talking with Jesse, John concludes that Jesse is fine. Everything will work out fine. This practice marks the first successful attempt of John singing backup on the song “Good-Bye Says It All.” The band actually produces three-part harmony for the first time (successfully).December 19 - The BlizzardIn Ohio parts of the state receive 14 inches of snow. It snows and rains ice all day. This also happens to be the only day all band members could get together to practice before the VFW gig. Bummer. Practice is canceled due to the weather. John, Dave, and Kevin will try to hook up later in the month. Many of the roadways are averaging around 15-20 mph. It's very bad. By the mid-evening, it is illegal to drive in Medina unless it is an emergency.December 22 -The Louisville V.F.W.Well, John, Kevin, and Dave tried to practice the day before the gig, but it wasn't very productive. The band is kind of pushed for time to be ready to play by 8:00. Bernie the owner lets us know we can start at 8:30. It's still snowing, but the roads are clear. The band is greeted by a Christmas decoration on the door that plays (and sings) “We wish you a Merry Christmas”. It's cute. Also on the door is a sign that reads:December 228-12Six ShootersOur first gig, and already the band's name has been hacked. The band sets a record-setting up their stuff. The bar is small, but not to the point of being uncomfortable. Many trips are made to unload two pick-up trucks and a car full of equipment. The patrons get nervous as the group drags in two eight foot tall stacks of P.A. speakers. Each time hearing the door decoration sing “We wish you a Merry Christmas.” It's getting a little annoying. The group is warned to keep the volume low. After setting things up, the band opens the set without an official sound check. Dave starts the set with “The star spangled banner” that leads into God Bless Texas. Due to the size and layout of the bar, it takes the majority of the first set to get the sound right. The set included Dave going into the audience to play an extended solo. This seemed to thrill the crowd as they probably had not seen a wireless system before. The set ended with some not very planned improvisation of “Born to Boogie” where Dave explained how all of us were born (Kevin began singing, Jesse was pounding in his mother to get out, John's fingers were going, and Dave was born with a guitar in his hand -a very painful labor). This is the bands first use of dynamics in a song. It turns out to be pretty good. The band followed Kevin back into the last verse and ended the song. The band starts the second set with Christmas Carols (an idea that was put in place the night before). Dave and Kevin do this “unplugged” with two acoustic guitars. In between five Christmas songs, Dave and Kevin ask trivia questions such as “What is the name of the horse in the song Jingle Bells (bobtail). The person with the correct answer got to reach in a bag of “gifts” that the band brought. The gifts included a 10 pack of pens, an ice scraper, a box of crunch and munch, and a box of candy canes. While the Christmas song idea sounded great, it took an immediate nosedive when Dave opened the set with an instrumental version of “What Child is This.” It seemed Jingle bells was the only song the group was familiar with. Even Kevin and Dave imitating characters from the holiday classic “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” dropped like a lead balloon. The band had their first “guest appearance” by Opel the drunken wench. She insisted that we sing Blue Christmas again (We had just finished singing it). We let her take on the lead vocals. Opel heard her own music as she basically ignored Kevin and Dave's strumming. Kevin passed her a lyric sheet, but apparently, Opel couldn't read. We cut her off after the first verse (NEXT!). The duo decided to cut Silent Night from the set and move on to brighter pastures.. In the process of moving the microphones around to do the unplugged set, the band had slightly damaged the sound they perfected during the first set. It was about this time a drunk shouted out “QUIT STALLING!!” (now there's the Christmas spirit!)The second set had the band slowing things down as they went into “Anymore, What Might've Been, And If Tomorrow Never Comes.” We did find out the vocals were a little muddy, and Dave's guitar needed to be louder. Jesse had not been feeling well before we even started, at this point, he's starting to cough, and not looking too well. The band takes a quick 10-minute break and gets ready for the third set.The third set had Jesse ready to pass out at any minute. By this time many of the people we thought were into us had left. Just losers trying to pump enough booze into women to get some Christmas nooky. The third set had Jim Ries (a buddy from work, and part of the reason we got the gig) and his ex-girlfriend's Aunt (Fay) high steppin' on the dance floor. It also had John drawing blanks in the middle of “Good-Bye Says It All.” This was added to nights previous mistakes like Dave cutting “Mercury Blues” in half by going to the ending two solos too soon, and Kevin flubbing a lyric here and there, as well as Jesse, providing some interesting drum parts to “Lifestyles Of The Not So Rich And Famous.” Luckily, all flubs are covered pretty smoothly (technical difficulties left Dave singing back-up alone on Bubba Hyde was pretty noticeable). Kevin goes mobile as he takes the mic on the dance floor and sings “So help me girl.” The band does the mosh version of “Sticks and Stones.” The band closes the night by repeating Watermelon Crawl, and Fast as You. The last song had all members on the dance floor along with the crowd. Another extended solo from Dave helps the band fill the time to 12:00. The band loads up the equipment and takes it back to Kevin's basement, it was all done at 1:00. We made $200. (of which we all got $50). We decided to let Jesse keep his $50 instead of putting it towards the drum set since it was Christmas and all.All in all a much better gig than expected. The band learns that we need to get rid of all the songs that weren't quite ready (Nothing Wrong With The Radio)by LEARNING THEM. This would eliminate last second set changes. It was much better than the biker benefit, but we now a good idea of what needs fine-tuning
