As broadcast October 14, 2022 with Danno just blissing out the entire time. Tonight we welcomed a lo-fi artist out of Cheongju, Korea who calls himself Nogymx in the studio. True name Jimmy Dunne, he drops his latest album Eien's Fable next Friday and we were just honored to give an early spin & world premiere to the opening cuts on the album for the show tonight, and have the artist play some of his favorite bumps from the lo-fi chillout hip-hop beats universe. Obviously, we also can't thank Nogymx enough for giving us the chance to rock some lo-fi for the entirety of this program, which is something we've been wanting to do for a very long time on the air. DOCTOR DRU on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/dottoredru - SoundCloud: @doctordru HOW I MET THE BASS on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/howimetthebass - Twitter: www.twitter.com/howimetthebass - Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/HowIMetTheBass 3 QUESTIONS to DOCTOR DRU: Q: Talking about your mix. How did these tracks influence your career? A: First of all, thanks for having me. It was an inspiring journey into the past. You know, I’m making music since I’m 13, so there was a lot to consider. Starting with John Coltrane was a must as he was a major influence and changed how I receive music. Then I had this Funk period in my life. I listened only to Funk and Disco music for some time. When I started playing the drums it was the groove that touched me deep in the heart. Such a relief. This transferred later into my DJ career and explains a lot of my earlier releases. Then there was Hip-Hop of course as it s close to all this funky stuff. I got deeper into electronic music where I discovered for example Move D, the seamless productions of Martin Buttrich or Moodymann, still one of my favourite artists. Tony Allen is another drummer reference. Omar's track includes Stevie as my all time hero as well as Henrik Schwarz. Pepe Bradock’s legendary Deep Burnt is a reference to my time as a resident in a beach club which got me back into DJing again. In the end you can go on for days playing all your influences but I liked the challenge to cover them in a one hour mix. It s still a tiny cut but I think, you get a feeling of where I’m coming from. Q: You're originally from Hamburg, living in Barcelona now. As a DJ you've been playing all over the world yet. Where´s the place you call "home"? A: The place I call “home” is still Hamburg. I spent there most of my life and there s a deep connection to the city with all my friends and family. But Barcelona is a nice sunny city to hang. Always smelling like gambas and weed with a dash of poo. Q: Which future projects are on the way - both Jeudi Records and Doctor Dru? A: I’ve produced a lot of tracks during winter time. Also with JEUDI there is some profound stuff on the way to be released before summer. Just follow our social media channels . It's all gonna be announced soon.
Follow us on SoundCloud to hear our label releases and grab some free downloads: http://soundcloud.com/monologues Girls of The Internet is the sound of a music-industry long-timer reinventing themselves, indulging their love of classic disco house while also producing soulful live organic cuts. Their mix for us is a riotous journey through house music past, present and future. *How would you describe your sound?* Patrick Adams making records for Dance Mania. *What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* The biggest influence for me right now is seeing people enjoy our music, it completely blows me away when people message to say they like our stuff, especially when women or members of the LGBTQ+ community. Electronic music is such a horrible schlong fest, and so many of the male DJs act so horrendously in the way they treat women at shows. It’s great to know we’re appealing to more than just banty lads. Another big influence is our collaborators; the vocalists and illustrators/painters we get to work with through the band are all amazing, and hugely inspirational to work with. Anybody who has ever met me will know how important Stereolab are to me, as I’ve probably tried to shame you into listening to them at some point. I love Chaka Khan, Patrick Adams. I could list musical influences for ages, but it would be pretty boring. I don’t have any big secrets nobody else has, and I’ve always tried to share music I love to whoever is listening to me. Some of my early influences in house were Pepe Bradock, Cajual, Basic Channel, Armand Van Helden, Henry Street, Masters At Work... I don’t listen to too much modern house — it has to be pretty incredible for me to need to add it to my collection. What I take away from other people’s music is how certain sounds work together; how a drum hit and a weird noise work together in a Prince record, or how a saturated kick in a Green Velvet record affects the mood of the track is where my brain goes. *Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?* It’s mainly sample based stuff we’re releasing on the run up to our debut album. Normally we work with musicians and vocalists, but I’m completely obsessed with ‘90s disco house, so I made a load of tracks while the album comes together. Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy looping disco records was what started everything — disco loops and drum machines are the purest form of house music as far as I’m concerned. House should be fun, and I wanted to try and convey the fun side of Girls’ with these EPs. I feel like I’m cheating when I sample other people’s music, which is why I try and call it an ‘edit’ or ‘mixtape’ when I’m looping other people’s work. The non-sample, full band, full production stuff is; our debut single ‘When U Go' which got picked up by Classic, which is the first full piece of music I made myself. 'Fondness Makes The Heart Grow Absent', which we self released last year, and it’s already been licensed for a few big compilations this year. It started life as a remix I did for somebody that got rejected, so I took all the original parts I recorded for the remix — guitar, bass, cut them up, added some synths and turned it into a loose cover of ‘It’ll All Be Over’ by The Supreme Jubilees, with Gershom Brown on vocals. The last track on the mix is called ‘Humble’ and features ex-Brand New Heavies vocalist and one of my good buddies Linda Muriel. It’s the lead single from our upcoming album. It’s a 2-steppy garage-ish thing. I made a version with live instruments, but I've ended up using the demo version with me playing everything on keyboard for the album, as it was impactful than the live version. I wanted to use a bit more music from the album on this mix, but it’s a bit too early to play too much of it publicly. Oh also, there is a remix of a track I made with the Ballroom MC Princess Precious Ebony, who features heavily on the Viceland documentary series ’My House’, and is an incredible person and a pleasure to work with. It’ll probably be a B-side to one of the singles from the album. I’ve been involved in music for a long time behind the scenes, and I’m just amazed at the incredible reaction we get for Girls’ stuff so far. We have a small group of fans who are so supportive and send us such amazing messages all the time. It’s really humbling. The music industry can be a horrible place — often unpleasant people behaving awfully with shady agendas and negative energy. It’s amazing to be involved in something that’s just about positivity and making great music. Where to begin with Versatile? An institution, a label, a pioneering force, the French imprint has become a staple of electronic music for decades. This year was in fact the 20th anniversary of the label, which was founded by Gilb'R back in 1996. Across this period Versatile has released music by some of the most influential artists of a generation: Pepe Bradock, I:Cube, Joakim and many more have all appeared throughout the label's history. In the present day Gilb'R remains as relevant a musician as ever. Having previously operated under the alias of Cheek and as one half of the duo Chateau Flight he is as experienced behind the labyrinth of machines as he is in label management and selection. In recent years he has appeared more prominently under his own name having appeared as part of the Acid Arab series, Sex Tags and of course on his own label. As a selector there are few who can rival his capabilities behind the turntables, he has many years of influence and experience to draw upon, of course.
