Hey, guitarists (OK...and wannabe guitarists too)! What were the records that made/make YOU want to pick a guitar and learn to play? That's the burning question this week, as we welcome Third Lad Andy Golding from C86 legends The Wolfhounds to O3L! The Wolfhounds are an English noise pop band formed in Romford, Essex, in 1985 by Dave Callahan, Paul Clark, Andy Golding, Andy Bolton and Frank Stebbing, and originally active until 1990. The band reformed in 2005 and continues to write, record and play live, releasing new albums in 2014, 2016, and 2020. (Thanks, Wikipedia.) Andy's current project is called Dragon Welding (hmmm...what does that mean? Listen and find out!), whose latest single is "TADT (These Are Dangerous Times)." What the hip kids are saying about Dragon Welding: "..a pulsating beat with all sorts of strings being strummed and plucked, in all sorts of 60's/70's school holidays tv series soundtrack kind of ways." - Whisperin' & Hollerin' - 2023 "Dragon Welding.. guitarist of Essex post-rock outliers The Wolfhounds, is a wondrous tapestry of ambient guitar instrumentals and sonic manipulations. This is music that channels the cosmic experimentations of 70s German avant-garde synth-rock with a dark Essex twist that somehow has glorious poptones. For fans of : Mouse On Mars, Plaid, Cluster." - Platekompaniet - 2023 Plus, as an added bonus, hear some of Brett's teenage recordings, including the "legendary" 1990 Empty Glass concert! What the hip kids said: "Wow, he sounds like a neanderthal toddler who just discovered music for the first time!" Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Shock World Service 096: I Didn't Want The Night To End (Cian Ó Cíobháin) 19/10/2020 Galway, Ireland 1. Phil Lynott - One Wish (Demo with Huey Lewis) Phil Lynott's friendship with Huey Lewis dated back to the mid-70s and this extraordinary demo, one of the last songs Lynott wrote, was never officially released. 2. John Cale - Dying On The Vine The eternally creative John Cale recorded this around the same time that Lynott collaborated with Lewis on the previous track. 3. OMD - Souvenir Possibly the most beautiful song in the entire OMD catalogue features the band's keyboard player Paul Humphreys on vocals. 4. Karen Marks - Cold Café Wistful new wave track from Melbourne from '81. 5. Clannad - Theme From Harry's Game Regularly played on the radio in the 80s, I had almost forgotten about it until I happened upon a Twitter thread admiring it no end. 6. Lani Hall - Never Say Never Again From an unofficial Bond movie from '83, I've always had a soft spot for the title track, sung by Lani Hall, who was married to Herb Alpert and briefly fronted Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66. 7. Sparks - I Want To Hold Your Hand Stunning cover from 1976 of The Beatles standard which was introduced to me by Barry Murphy of The Last Sound. 8. Chris Clark - How About You Chris Clark is one of a very small number of white performers who recorded on Motown during the 60s. 9. Love - My Little Red Book I first heard this when composer Burt Bacharach performed it at Galway Arts Festival in 2019. Next morning, I was on the hunt and discovered a number of covers, including this one from 1965 from the mighty Love. 10. BEAK> - Yatton From one of Geoff Barrow's post-Portishead Bristol bands. 11. De Ambassade - Geen Genade Like the previous track, this Dutch song has the spirit of 1980s new wave all over it, though it came out in 2016. 12. Turquoise Days - Grey Skies Astonishing synth-pop classic from ‘84 from a duo based in Jersey on the Channel Islands, who released a number of cassettes in the 80s. 13. Ariel Pink - Stray Here With You Only a genius like Ariel Pink would have an unreleased pop gem like this in his locker. It surfaced last year on his ‘Oddities Sodomies Vol 2' compilation of previously unreleased tracks. 14. Toasted Heretic - Another Day, Another Riot I've been after a good quality version of this track for ages - one of Toasted Heretic's greatest moments, which will forever remind me of moving to Galway. I was thrilled when Neil Farrell, who used to record with the band (and also records as The Melancholy Thug), gifted me with a high quality version a few months ago. Indeed, I borrowed from the lyrics to give this podcast its title. 15. Jan St. Werner - VS Cancelled Jan St. Werner of Mouse On Mars collaborated with The Fall's Mark E Smith as Von Südenfed. This track features Smith reading an email from Domino detailing why the band had been dropped by the label. 16. The Fall - Paint Work The Fall's 8th studio LP ‘This Nation's Saving Grace' is a masterpiece and this ramshackle track is one of its defining moments. 17. Billy Fury - I'm Lost Without You This track almost sounds like a blueprint for the music of early Tindersticks. Indeed, Morrissey was also a huge fan of this 60s Scouse singer. 18. The Kinks - I Go To Sleep (Demo) We kicked off with a demo and so we'll part with one. Written by Ray Davies, it was never formally recorded by The Kinks, but has been covered many times since. https://cianociobhain.com/ https://www.rte.ie/rnag/
Full circle with Bence Meijer, more closely connected to Rubber than we all expected. Bence is a musician and founder of the blog Archaic Inventions, dedicated to discovering and contextualizing experimental tape culture from the recent past. ”This mix is the result of a couple of years of gathering material, making selections and remembering the past. After a less rosy period of my life I reconnected with my old music friends in Berlin a few years ago. They helped putting me back on track for the most part. It happened after As Longitude came to play in Amsterdam and gave me a sense of spirit again…. I reconnected to Berlin later on. I slowly remembered a previous phase of being in Berlin during the early 00’s digging for records as a young teenager. Going to Staalplaat, buying Mouse On Mars and The Octagon Man records through town, seeing Miss Kitten set-up for a gig in an industrial warehouse club (but went home before it started because I was too young to stay up too late), going to the old Tacheles (say 2004) where a guy on acid was holding a Death In June picture disc vinyl and a wooden cat statue while spacing out, also I remember well seeing an early interview with Berlin electro-pop unit 2Raumwohnung on the “Lola de Musica” TV program on Dutch television. I was visiting the Russendisko bar-night where I was looked upon weirdly being 14 years old entering the place after midnight (was it at Sonnenallee…? Not sure anymore, so much layered histories intertwining). In short: reconnected to Berlin I remembered many things about a music feeling I had forgotten but that had been part of me. It all came back into me with the energy and velocity of some type of karmic 90’s boomerang within a framework of a seemingly renewed sense of love and appreciation. I’m born in The Hague and grew up closely to the Bunker Records scene. Jan Duivenvoorden (the musical brain behind Unit Moebius and one half of Leuk & Ko) was always a good friend of my father. We used to go on Holidays to Hungary together in the 90’s (I’m half Hungarian): me, my parents and Jan and his back-then girlfriend. An intimate video documentation exists of one of our trips that Jan made. I remember those days vividly.- Since my return to Berlin in recent times I had to rethink my life, my personal losses and I had to reconstruct and relive differentiated realities to understand where I am now. Luckily back home in Holland I gave it my best shot. I reconnected with Jan after many years, we played some tunes and spoke about life and today’s music world. I also managed to play a live set at the Braille Satellite Festival in Lithuania. A festival organized by my special friends from Berlin and Vilnius. Since a young kid I knew there was not going to be much else than this strange music world. Some people discover parties or something. I never did. It was like this all along because of the older people around me. My music blog Archaic Inventions hopefully testifies to this upbringing. Through the years Rubber has oddly brought together different recognizable musical energies including some of the people I happen to have been connected to. Synchronicities. I am grateful for the Rubber vision and the releases you guys put out! The newest track in this mix is from 2002. This is an ode to Berlin (Germany in general), The Hague and Budapest. Also hidden are some Latin American oddities. Different countries and their musical feeling, manifesting themselves in my memory. A flash of personal remembrance, my impressions of the 90s and 00s, yet now more adjusted to home-listening. This set was recorded at OCCII Amsterdam on May 1st. OCCII is my dearest home-base music venue in Amsterdam that we opened specially to record this mix during the corona pandemic. No CDJ hi-fidelity, but it-is-what-it-is quality, let it - happen, squat-style. Maybe not as great as I thought I would be in selecting tunes but….Rubber Time!!“ Bence Meijer / Archaic Inventions @archaic-inventions

POWEL on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/powel.music - SoundCloud: @powel HOW I MET THE BASS on: - Facebook: www.facebook.com/howimetthebass - Twitter: www.twitter.com/howimetthebass - Mixcloud: www.mixcloud.com/HowIMetTheBass 3 QUESTIONS to POWEL: Q: Let´s talk about your mix. Reading the tracklist offers a long journey yet. So how did these tracks find the way to your heart? A: This mix can obviously only be an overview of the different styles of Electronic Music I liked between, roughly, 1997 and 2007. So between the time Electronic Music first appeared on my radar, until the time I got into producing again. It is probably the weirdest and most eclectic mix I've ever recorded. It represents most of the phases I went through, not chronologically though, that would have made the mixing impossible. It includes my IDM phase represented by “Boards Of Canada”, "Dntel" and “Mouse On Mars”, which hasn't lost any of it's impact on me, even after all those years. I think I've gotten into that, when I discovered “Arte Space Night”, a TV show which was showing random images of space combined with ambient music, a perfect thing to get stoned to. I included also a little bit of Drum'N'Bass, which was actually the music I played during my very first club gig. I think I was about 16 years old at then. There's also some House, including this track “I'm lonely” by “Hollis P. Monroe”, which I only had on a mixtape at the time and never really found out what that track was. Until it popped up somehow a couple of years ago when I was browsing through youtube, and I was like: "Hey that's the track you used to love as a kid." That was quite a moment for me. That track “Resurrection” by “The Amalgamation Of Soundz”, is one of the first records I bought, right after I bought my first decks in 1999, so this will always have special place in my heart, it's a very versatile record, which somehow manages to cover so many different styles within just 4 tracks. I also included some minimal or minimal-ish sounding tracks in the podcast, which was quite revolutionary at the time I discovered this, at least for me. Creating so much with so little, I was really impressed by that. [see full answer on www.facebook.com/howimetthebass due to limited SoundCloud space here] Q: You´re playing your music all over the planet. Do you have a favorite spot and would you prefer playing more local instead of endless travels every weekend? A: For me, one of the most amazing part of traveling as a DJ is to get around, meet new people and developing friendships all over the world. I would say that this is sometimes even better then the actual DJing part. Sure, on the other hand you have to spend a lot of time at airports and they are the combined horror of overcrowded train stations, shopping malls and border crossings, but you get rewarded by playing music you like at some of the most interesting places in the world, so who wouldn't like that. I also like playing at home, but I'm trying to keep it low, just to make it more special for me. Q: There´s a new Powel release out on Do Not Sit On The Furniture Recordings. Which other exciting projects are on the way? A: I just finished my second EP for “All Day I Dream” on which I was working on for quite a while now. I think I’ve been pushing the release date for almost a year and half now, because it never felt a 100% ready to me, but it does now finally. So there's that. I'm also about to finish my first full length album, which I want to release sometime next year. So that's what’s kept and is still keeping me quite busy in the studio.

The madly creative minds of German electronic duo Mouse on Mars have come up with a suitably madly creative mix for this week’s Clash DJ mix. The duo have been experimenting and crafting brilliantly skewed leftfield electronica for almost two decades now, ranging from glitch-hop to a live soundtracking of Werner Herzog’s trip-fest ‘Fata Morgana’, all of it wildly inventive. Thus, expect the esoteric in Mouse on Mars’ Clash mix, and wrap your head around chopped up passages of tracks, snatches of melody, and thoroughly mangled funk, hip hop and juke. It’s out there, but it works beautifully as a whole. Keeping it abstract, the duo’s tracklist for their mix is something of a puzzle itself, containing a list of the selected artists in no particular order and no track names. Although we’re fairly sure there’s at least one song title in there, and one or two artist names which didn’t make it in – Delia Derbyshire’s 1969 prophetic treasure ‘Love Without Sound’ definitely makes an appearance.
