Our second premiere of the day comes from Closer Orbit as he releases an EP on Detroit's Motech Records. 'Rave Things' is an ode to Detroit, as Closer Orbit channels the classic slamming groove, combined with deep and soulful undertones. Detroit's Motech Records welcomes Nicolaas Black to the fold, as he unveils his newest project Closer Orbit with the ‘Rave Things EP'. A four track project that see Nico return to the roots of his sound and to the basics of techno funk. Nico has a long musical history, from his exposure to opera and classical at a young age to the experimental explosion in the 90s via artists like Front 242, KMFDM, 808 State, Nitzer Ebb and NIN. After attending his first illegal rave in Detroit, he learned to mix vinyl and the progression to a dancefloor aesthetic was sealed. His instinct led to a 6 year sojourn in Chicago, where he was fortunate to meet some of the seminal pioneers of house, and began assisting studio sessions at Slang Music Group - Frankie Knuckles, Paul Johnson, Joe Smooth, Ron Carroll, Craig Loftus and Vince Lawrence, amongst others. Later he worked for Mark Picchiotti at Blueplate Records, rounding out his 4-on-the-floor education. He also engineered a “Pigface” album for Martin Atkins of P.I.L. fame, solidifying his industrial roots. Countless DJ sets, raves, festivals and recording sessions later, he is now based in Los Angeles and stays committed to the studio and impromptu surf missions. A consummate producer, under several monikers his music and sets bridge the width of the underground dance music spectrum, from Chicago to Detroit, Berlin to LA; from techno to electro, jazz to funky house, disco, acid, industrial and beyond. His reproduction of Fela Kuti's ‘Zombie' remains a seminal warehouse favourite and 2020's ‘The Sun' has to-date racked up well over a million plays on SoundCloud. Priding himself on constant evolution and growth, he presents his Closer Orbit incarnation. ‘Rave Things EP' releases on 17 June, and features 4 new tracks that draw from his many influences including the monster house opener ‘Piano Track' and melodious ‘State Of (I Still Believe)', to the Detroitesque ‘Rave Things,' before the deep and synthy ‘Foldspace' closes this varied and reflective EP. 'Rave Things' is a peak time dance-floor bliss, as Nico works a 909 to the fullest and stabs and strings simmer around the front of the tracks soundscape. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ JOE SMOOTH # 082 - PART 1 Joe Smooth was a self-taught musician and started creating original music at the age of 12. During his teenage years, he began to make a name for himself as a DJ in the underground Chicago House Music scene. He is credited as essential to the creation of house music as a genre and the revival of the culture surrounding it. During his 20s he became an essential DJ for any viable club in Chicago. Smooth gained international acclaim with the release of his late 1980s tracks “Promise LAnd" (featuring Anthony Thomas), "They Want to be Free," and "I Try.” He is best known for "Promised Land," which spoke of how humans, as brothers and sisters, should unite in love and thrive in paradise. Joe Smooth's song has been covered several times and is still played today. Originally released in 1987, it peaked at No. 56 in the UK singles Chart in February 1989, following the Top 40 success of a cover version by The Style Council. An album of the same title became available in 1988, and a music video was produced for the single. A follow-up album, Rejoice, was released in 1990, which featured the hit single "They Want to be Free.”

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ JOE SMOOTH # 082 - PART 2 Joe Smooth helped influence a decade of house and dance music elements in mainstream pop throughout the 1990s. By the new millennium he was approached to work with many pop, R&B, and other genre icons such as Destiny's Child, Whitney Houston, and Cisqo. In October 2004, "Promised Land" appeared in the video game Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. Within the game, the song could be heard playing on the fictional House Music radio station SF-UR. He later launched his own record label Indie Art Music. The label has recently announced an upcoming song with Benny Benassi and other notable producers and artists. Indie Art Music set out with the goal of creating mainstream music in all genres with the ability to distribute, market, publish, and produce all within one single company. While the focus is on mainstream areas of the industry, Indie Art Music is currently developing and working with new artists like Amy DB of Chicago, Greg Tanoose of Austin, among others. He continues to work with his label as the CEO, manager, and executive producer, while still releasing music of his own. Smooth is a musician and producer, who has worked as a remixer, producer, engineer, and writer. He has earned gold and platinum record awards for his work, work behind the scenes with Grammy award-winning artists. Notable artists he has worked with include Bros, Whitney Houston, Donnell Jones, Destiny's Child, Sisqo, Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson, A Guy Called Gerald, Lil Louis, D'Bora, Tyree Cooper, Fast Eddie, Fingers Inc., Art Of Noise, Sterling Void, Pet Shop Boys, Janet Jackson, The Style Council, New Order, and Steve Hurley. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ TYREE COOPER #034 - PART 2 Listen to Tyree in part 2 explain how he worked with DJ / Producer Fast Eddie and how his drum beats were on every Dj International Record coming out, yet he was never credited for his superb drum programming. It was actually Joe Smith from Movin Records who told Tyree that his music was blowing up. Later on in his career, Tyree played the drum machine on Joe Smooth's hit ‘Promised Land' and so many other records to name. Tyree take a job at Quantum Distribution, despite being paid a meer $3.50/an hour it became his way to learn all about the record business. There's a family tree of modern music and one of its biggest branches is New Order. The Manchester band, formed in the wake of Joy Division's untimely end, have fed into the sound of almost every band and artist you've loved for, for forty years. Even if you're not a fan, you can trace their blueprint across all you hear. Their transformation from post punk to electronic music, swept up kids who would go on to become techno DJ's, rock bands, pop acts, and everything in between. In the 80's, they were the backbone of The Hacienda, bringing big club culture to Manchester. And over four decades there have been stops and starts, barneys and breakups.
