Remembering Frank StaggLast week marked 50 years of the death of Frank Stagg on hunger strike in Wakefield Prison, in England.  Events, including a black flag vigil and a march and rally were organised to remember the Mayo man. Gerry Kelly who was on hunger strike in England in the 1970s for over 206 days, during which he was force fed 167 times, gave the main oration in Ballina and spoke of Frank's great courage and commitment.I was in Long Kesh when Frank died on 12 February 1976 after 62 days on hunger strike. Britain's intransigence and in particular the obduracy of the then Home Secretary Roy Jenkins, ensured that Frank's fourth hunger strike would result in his death. As we walked around the Cage or sat in our cells the talk from when Frank embarked on his fast, was about his resolve and strength of character as on his own he faced the brutality of a British system determined to break him.Two years earlier we had watched as Frank's friend and comrade Michael Gaughan, another Mayo man, had died on hunger strike. Holy SmokeI used to smoke. I was very addicted to it. I smoked everything that was legal. I smoked a pipe for years. I liked the pipe. There is a certain ritual attached to pipe smoking. Filling your pipe requires special skills. It takes time. And care. Fill it too loosely and it will not last long. Too tightly and it will not burn at all. Most pipe smokers had a number of pipes. But there was always a favourite one. My favourites were invariably Kapp and Petersons. Particularly the bendy ones, favoured by Sherlock Holmes. Kapp and Peterson still have  a shop in Dublin. Kapp and Peterson gets honourable mention in Samuel Beckett's Waiting For Godot. In Belfast Miss Morans in Church Lane, which is still doing business, was a favoured supplier of pipes and good tobacco.Pipe tobacco is of course a matter of choice and taste. And addiction. I was inclined towards heavier brands like Condor. The I graduated to War Horse, particularly War Horse plug tobacco. The preparation of this type of pipe filler requires a pen knife for cutting off little slices of tobacco. These were then rubbed between your hands until they were reduced to the desired consistency. This added to the ritual. It was probably theraputic. If thats not a contradiction. Ditto  with the smell of pipe smoke. Back in the day pipe smokers were a fixed presence  in pubs and at most social gatherings. Many people, barely visible in the clouds of smoke, would declare how much they liked the smell. The death of Nora ComiskeyIt was with sadness that I heard of the death last week of Nora Comiskey. Many Dublin republicans and some of us from Belfast and other parts knew Nora over many years. She was a former president and long-time activist in the 1916-1921 Club. This was a unique institution founded in the 1940s whose aim was to try and bring together some of those who fought on the pro and anti- Treaty sides in the Civil War. Many did, including Nora who had been in Fianna Fáil. Its founding charter is the 1916 Proclamation and among its objectives are a commitment to honour those who fought for Irish Freedom and who work for its achievement. It also seeks to contribute to the cause of an Ireland — united, independent and sovereign

Back with Rob Comiskey from the Comiskey Group for a behind-the-curtain look at what really goes on when world-famous artists hit Australian venues.Rob shares the Marilyn Manson story you won't believe - insane green room demands, “don't look at him” rules, and an elevator meltdown that turned into a 45-minute standoff… all because he refused to walk a short set of stairs. We also get into the wildest security briefing Rob's ever heard, how venues handle extreme performers, and why respect for staff matters - especially when you're dealing with security teams on the front line. Then it flips to legendary: Ice Cube's rider might be the best of all time - two buckets of KFC and a bottle of bourbon - and yes, they had to keep KFC open late to make it happen. Rob also talks Cypress Hill nights where the crowd was a full-blown smoke cloud, plus what “artist riders” really cost and why most of it never even gets touched. To wrap it up, Rob breaks down what makes a concert truly successful: the punter experience, constant improvements, and building venues and events that people walk away from singing. If you love Australian hospitality stories, backstage chaos, music industry insights, and proper true yarns, this one's for you.#propertrueyarn Hosted on Acast. From turning down Elton John early at Sandstone Point, to bringing out The Beach Boys, to the brutal moment COVID flipped a sold-out Violent Femmes show into a six-figure loss overnight - Rob shares the wins, the misses, and the stuff punters never see. They yarn about genre-by-genre bar spend, lightning evacuations, why insurance has become a nightmare, and the reality that one headline or a curveball can change everything. CES 2026 Just Showed Us the Future. It's More Practical Than You Think.CES has always been part crystal ball, part carnival. But something shifted this year.I caught up with Brian Comiskey—Senior Director of Innovation and Trends at CTA and a futurist by trade—days after 148,000 people walked the Las Vegas floor. What he described wasn't the usual parade of flashy prototypes destined for tech graveyards. This was different. This was technology getting serious about actually being useful.Three mega trends defined the show: intelligent transformation, longevity, and engineering tomorrow. Fancy terms, but they translate to something concrete: AI that works, health tech that extends lives, and innovations that move us, power us, and feed us. Not technology for its own sake. Technology with a job to do.The AI conversation has matured. A year ago, generative AI was the headline—impressive demos, uncertain applications. Now the use cases are landing. Industrial AI is optimizing factory operations through digital twins. Agentic AI is handling enterprise workflows autonomously. And physical AI—robotics—is getting genuinely capable. Brian pointed to robotic vacuums that now have arms, wash floors, and mop. Not revolutionary in isolation, but symbolic of something larger: AI escaping the screen and entering the physical world.Humanoid robots took a visible leap. Companies like Sharpa and Real Hand showcased machines folding laundry, picking up papers, playing ping pong. The movement is becoming fluid, dexterous, human-like. LG even introduced a consumer-facing humanoid. We're past the novelty phase. The question now is integration—how these machines will collaborate, cowork, and coexist with humans. Then there's energy—the quiet enabler hiding behind the AI headlines.Korea Hydro Nuclear Power demonstrated small modular reactors. Next-generation nuclear that could cleanly power cities with minimal waste. A company called Flint Paper Battery showcased recyclable batteries using zinc instead of lithium and cobalt. These aren't sexy announcements. They're foundational.Brian framed it well: AI demands energy. Quantum computing demands energy. The future demands energy. Without solving that equation, everything else stalls. The good news? AI itself is being deployed for grid modernization, load balancing, and optimizing renewable cycles. The technologies aren't competing—they're converging.Quantum made the leap from theory to presence. CES launched a new area called Foundry this year, featuring innovations from D-Wave and Quantum Computing Inc. Brian still sees quantum as a 2030s defining technology, but we're in the back half of the 2020s now. The runway is shorter than we thought. His predictions for 2026: quantum goes more mainstream, humanoid robotics moves beyond enterprise into consumer markets, and space technologies start playing a bigger role in connectivity and research. The threads are weaving together.Technology conversations often drift toward dystopia—job displacement, surveillance, environmental cost. Brian sees it differently. The convergence of AI, quantum, and clean energy could push things toward something better. The pieces exist. The question is whether we assemble them wisely.CES is a snapshot. One moment in the relentless march. But this year's snapshot suggests technology is entering a phase where substance wins over spectacle. That's a future worth watching. This episode is part of the Redefining Society and Technology podcast's CES 2026 coverage. We all know the secular world opposes the very idea of a person with same-sex attraction seeking any kind of therapy or spiritual counsel that might enable them to reach a state of healthy relations with the opposite sex. But what's odd is that many Catholics seem to have bought into this. Many assume that if someone is not currently attracted to the opposite sex, this is a static, lifelong condition and therefore they must be called to celibacy. But this view involves multiple misunderstandings – of the SSA experience, of anthropology, of the power of God's grace, and of the good of celibacy itself. Today's guests know otherwise because they both have a background with same-sex attraction, and yet are each now married with children. Andrew Comiskey and Marco Casanova run Desert Stream and Living Waters Ministries, which for decades have offered help to Christians seeking healing from sexual disorders (including but not limited to SSA). This conversation offers solid, spiritually and psychologically sound, experience-based answers to some disputed questions about how the Church should be pastoring those with same-sex attraction. It's not about “conversion therapy”. It's about conversion in the Catholic sense – one day at a time. --Can we really put a ceiling on God's ability to heal us psychologically? --Does any attempt at such healing amount to the secular bugbear of “conversion therapy”? --What does life look like for a person with a “gay” past who is now married to the opposite sex? --Is it legitimate for Christians to embrace a gay identity as long as they don't act out sexually? --Is there such a thing as a chaste same-sex romantic relationship? In this special episode of On Location, I had the pleasure of speaking with Brian about what we can expect from this year's CES, how it continues to shape the tech world, and what it means for all of us navigating a Hybrid Analog Digital Society.Setting the Tone for the Year in TechAs Brian pointed out, CES is not just an event—it's the launchpad for the year's tech trends. Taking place January 7-10 in Las Vegas, CES 2025 will be a massive showcase of innovation across countless industries, from artificial intelligence to mobility, digital health, energy solutions, and beyond. This year's theme, "Dive In," perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the event. It's not just about experiencing the surface level of emerging technologies but about going deeper—exploring how these advancements interact, converge, and shape our everyday lives. Whether you're an executive closing deals, a media professional discovering cutting-edge innovations, or a curious onlooker reading from afar, CES offers an opportunity to explore the tech-driven future.Human-Centric Innovation at Its CoreCES has evolved from a purely consumer electronics show to something much broader. While enterprise solutions now account for nearly 40% of its exhibitors, the focus remains on human-centric innovation. As Brian aptly said, "Humans are not just consumers; they are patients, workers, collaborators, and creators." The technologies at CES aim to enhance our lives in all these roles.Digital health is a prime example of this shift. This year, exhibitors in this category are moving to the Venetian campus alongside smart home, lifestyle tech, and accessibility solutions, highlighting how these technologies are converging to improve health, wellness, and longevity. From wearables that connect to your smart home to smart mirrors that monitor your mood, CES demonstrates how personalized, data-driven ecosystems can redefine daily living. The Evolution of InnovationBrian and I also discussed the nature of innovation, which he breaks down into two categories: evolutionary and revolutionary. CES showcases both. Evolutionary innovation involves incremental advances, like smarter AI chips in TVs that turn entertainment devices into command centers for your smart home or even tools for telehealth. Revolutionary innovation, on the other hand, includes breakthroughs like nuclear fusion and generative AI—transformations that redefine industries overnight. This year, startups are expected to bring some of the most exciting stories. The Eureka Park pavilion will spotlight companies like Standard Energy, which is developing vanadium ion battery tiles for home energy storage, and Senergetics, which uses AI to predict and prevent corrosion in power plant pipes. Another standout is Glidance, an autonomous guide robot for individuals with low vision, showcasing how innovation can serve diverse needs and create new opportunities for accessibility.A Convergence of Ideas and OpportunitiesAt its heart, CES is about connection—not just connecting devices but connecting people and ideas. It's a place where startups meet industry giants, partnerships are forged, and new possibilities are imagined. As Brian highlighted, the show serves as both a showcase and a platform for collaboration, where the seeds of future innovations are planted.Wrapping It UpCES 2025 is more than a trade show—it's a glimpse into the future of our coexistence with technology. As we prepare to dive into the event, one thing is clear: technology is no longer something we simply use. It's a part of who we are and how we live.I'll leave you with this thought: CES isn't just about what's next; it's about how we can work together to make what's next even better.Mark your calendars for January 7-10, and stay tuned for more conversations as Sean Martin and I bring you the latest stories On Location.Subscribe, follow, and let's explore the future together!____________________________This Episode's Sponsors HITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-cybersecurity-society-humanity-conference-and-event-coverageWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage?Learn More

Sick episode, bro! No, literally, this episode is sick! Well, actually, Producer Casey was sick with COVID-19 during what was supposed to be a rare, in-person, Rosemont reunion of the Ubp3. #Cantaloop Fortunately, The Fest For Beatles Fans (nee “Beatlefest”) is always sick. Sick, in a good way, like the kids said in spring, '95. We need to legally mention that the Fest was NOT COVID-19 sick, thankfully; which means it probably injected bleach, and horse dewormer. What a great way to own the libz, for freedumb! Somehow, Tony & T.J. were as healthy as two legally-giddy, mid-1970's born Chicago guys can be, so they spent two beautiful days checking out all that this inspiring, lovely collection of fellow Beatles nerds has to offer. And Poducer Casey was able to rally, and contribute to our recorded shenanigans at the Fest from his sad, GrubHub-reekin' hotel room. (Oddly, Casey did not order GrubHub.) So stop your elitist reading, just push play (#FUAerosmith), and come celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Fest for Beatles Fans with us! Because we also ask other burning Beatles questions, like:

September 28, 1920 - A grand jury indicts eight members of the Chicago White Sox on charges of fixing the1919 World Series in the "Black Sox Scandal." It is the black eye on the sport that would lead to the banning of eight players. Eddie Cicotte and "Shoeless" Joe Jackson both confessed to accepting money from gamblers. Cicotte's second pitch of Game 1 of the 1919 World Series hit the Reds leadoff batter, which was the pre-arranged signal to the gamblers that the players had accepted the fix. Jackson and Cicotte would both recant their confessions after key evidence went missing from the Cook County courthouse. Years later, the missing confessions would reappear in the possession of Comiskey's lawyer.September 28, 1941 - Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox goes 6 for 8 in a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Athletics to finish the season with a .406 batting average. No player has batted .400 since.September 28, 1974 - Nolan Ryan pitches his third of seven career no-hitters, striking out 15 batters and beating the Minnesota Twins, 4 - 0, at Anaheim Stadium. He also walks eight to run his season total to 202 bases on balls, joining Bob Feller in 1938 as the only pitcher to walk more than 200 in a season. Ryan will again top 200 in 1977.September 28, 2007 The Boston Red Sox clinch the AL East title, bringing to an end a streak of 9 consecutive division titles by the New York Yankees, dating back to 1998. The Yankees will not miss the post season however, having clinched the American League Wild Card.

Listen below to the trailer and learn more about the host and show.HOST - JEREMY MCFARLINGrowing up in Middle Tennessee, I didn't have a pro football team that was close enough to me to feel a part of. My first memory of pro football was Super Bowl 22. I picked the Broncos to win, and, even though they didn't win, I followed them from that point on.John Elway was (and is) my favorite player. I have played as the Broncos on Tecmo Bowl, Tecmo Bowl Super Bowl, Madden, and 2K Sports. I fondly remember the moments when the Broncos won Super Bowls 32 and 33.Around this time, the Oilers came to Tennessee. I was hooked. I finally had a team just down the road from my hometown of Bon Aqua. Oiler (and later Titans) mania hit this area. Jerseys, hats, footballs, merchandise, and several autographs later, I'm a Titans fan through and through. It's the dedication, the love, and the passion for football that helps me realize that football is family. Each fan base has a story, a history, and a love for their team. That's what I want to talk about each and every podcast. You can follow me @jeremy_mcfarlin. Message me if you want to share your reasons why your football team is family.
