Duncan Robinson never anticipated making it to the NBA. The Seacoast doesn't produce elite basketball talent. The region's best ballers may end up playing a few years professionally in Europe, but that's the extent of it. And Robinson saw himself going down a similar path. As for Robinson's story of attending prep school at Phillips Exeter, playing D-III ball in Massachusetts, transferring to Michigan, and ending up in the NBA as un undrafted free agent? It's an unlikely one, and his story of scrappiness, hard work, resilience, and a little luck resonates deeply with the people of the Seacoast. In today's bonus conversation from the virtual Seacoast Stories studios, one of the best shooters in the NBA joins me to discuss: Duncan's love for yoga (00:00) Favorite Seacoast hangouts (03:48) Duncan's WILD journey from NH to the NBA (07:18) Signing with the Miami Heat (as a lifelong Celtics fan) (16:38) Lessons learned from coach Erik Spoelstra and Heat legend Dwyane Wade (19:30) Naming Dunkin' Donuts Munchkins (24:17) Duncan Robinson is a forward for the Miami Heat, a rival of the Boston Celtics. A native of New Castle, N.H., Robinson attended Phillips Exeter in Exeter. After that, he played D-III basketball at Williams College in The Berkshires before transferring to the University of Michigan. Then, as an undrafted free agent, Robinson signed with the Heat. Since entering the league in 2018, Robinson has gained a reputation as one of the best shooters in the NBA. The holder of several shooting records, Robinson signed a massive 5-year deal with the Heat for a whopping $90 million in 2021. --To support the telling of more fun Seacoast Stories like this one, please FOLLOW this podcast on our Apple Podcasts and/or Spotify feeds. Dallion remembers falling in love with basketball at an early age, being inspired by his father and older brother. Born just north of Boston, Johnson was in the midst of great basketball through and through. Johnson and I converse about the anticipation surrounding his arrival in Andover as the clear heir to the basketball team. He burst onto the scene, playing next to and against talented, older players. Dallion was just focused on being a freshman in high school though. His campaign ended with the cherry on top away victory against rival Phillips Exeter. Over the next 3 years, Johnson would re-write the record books. His Senior year saw a playoff berth and victory, Gatorade player of the year, and conference player of the year. Johnson does not envy the pressure associated with his dealings on the court, or off during his recruitment. Aspirations of going high-major led him to Penn st, where he bloomed at times. At others, Johnson considered if a detour was in his future. This past Summer, he pivoted to Florida Gulf Coast University, where he is set to graduate in August. He retains one more year of eligibility after putting together a solid season for the Eagles. All in all, Dallion's talent is outclassed by his humility and charisma. He has served as inspiration for his own younger brother , who is headed to Andover in the Fall. Recorded: 4.24.24

Wardell Julius Clark and Regina Victor are stars who just keep growing in our Chicago theatre community. We had an amazing time talking with them recently about all of their adventures. They are work and life partners and as Gary said, "extraordinary creative artists and human beings." They also did a beautiful job introducing the show. Voice over agents, take note. Regina Victor works as a theatre director, producer, dramaturg, arts journalist, and mentor. Regina is a non-binary femme who grew up in Oakland, now residing in Chicago. Regina attended boarding school at Phillips Exeter, then studied theatre, religion, and dance at Santa Clara University. They have worked with and been mentored by, among others, Phylicia Rashad, Anna Shapiro, Raelle Myrick-Hodges, and Danya Taymor. Victor has helped develop world premieres by Antoinette Nwandu (Breach:...), Brett Neveu (To Catch A Fish), Sarah Ruhl and Morgan McNaught (A Persephone Pageant), and Loy Webb (The Light, His Shadow). Regina will be direct a world premiere of Pro-Am at Sideshow in May. They have recently been named to be the first Associate Producer ever at Court Theatre. Regina founded an arts criticism platform called Rescripted in 2017. Rescripted’s mission is "to reprogram the way we critically engage with each other using an empathetic lens, while cultivating critics and adding new voices to the field." It is a collective of artists who engage with each other's ideas and opinions openly. Regina mentors young critics through a program called The Key, which has produced some terrific new critics. It is produced in partnership with the Chicago Inclusion Project and is hosted by Steppenwolf Theater Company. Wardell Julius Clark was raised in Fairfield, Alabama, where he toured the country as a child with the amazing Sparkle Dance Company. Read about their mission and programs here. He went on to audition for DePaul University's acting program, which is extremely competitive. He got in to the program, didn't get cut, and has been working here in Chicago ever since. He was a very successful actor for the first 10 years of his career, then asked Ron OJ Parsons if he could assist him on directing Gem of the Ocean at Court. He tells a wonderful story about his first (triumphant) directing gig on Insurrection at Stage Left. Next up was Wardell's hugely acclaimed production of The Shipment. He has been booked as a director since... We recently saw and were blown away by His Shadow, which Wardell (with Sydney Charles) directed, with Regina serving as Dramaturg. It was truly not to be missed. The good news is it was recorded for the archives at Harold Washington Library, so you can see it there. Wardell is a company member at one of our all-time favorite companies, TimeLine, and is a member of their amazing Living History Education Program. Regina is working on a wonderful project at Lyric Opera called "Empower Youth". More to say about these upcoming projects, but can't wait to publish their episode. So come back to this site for updates.

I’ve been excited to have Ben on the show from the beginning, since Minerva is one of the few education startups out there that’s truly changing and competing with the existing university system. They’ve taken a completely fresh look at how to run a university in the 21st century, and their results have been incredible, which we get into right as the episode starts. My guest this week is Brent Grinna, the Founder & CEO of EverTrue. EverTrue is a social donor management software platform that helps hundreds of higher education, independent school, and other non-profit fundraising organizations track and engage alumni and donors. EverTrue participated in TechStars and was selected as a winner of MassChallenge in 2011. Bain Capital Ventures is their lead investor today, and their partner institutions include household names like Amherst, Williams, Colgate, Brown, Boston University, Phillips Andover, and Phillips Exeter. The business was born after Brent - who’d been fast tracking as a venture capital and private equity investor - was asked to serve as an Alumni Volunteer for his undergraduate alma mater, Brown University. He found a system in desperate need of upgrade to 21st century technology and tactics, and set out to bring them to the education fundraising process he cared deeply about. The reason he cared so deeply was that access to higher education had changed the lives of both he and his brothers, who’d grown up on rural farmland in a far flung corner of Iowa. Football and smarts were Brent’s ticket to Brown, where he not only excelled academically but ended up Captain of the Varsity Football Team. After graduating he spent four years in finance at William Blair & Company and Madison Dearborn Partners, then earned his MBA with honors from Harvard Business School. In this week’s second segment Brent and I talked about the people stuff that almost always ends up being the primary focus of the CEO, at any stage of the business. I think other CEOs and those who aspire to be one will relate to both the insights and the struggles we both shared in this aspect of the job, if not to uncover all the answers then at least to commiserate on some of the harder questions. I consider Brent both a true friend and one of the most promising entrepreneurs in Boston, I think you’ll enjoy listening in on our conversation... especially if you don’t mind a couple Pats fans / ex-jocks taking apart the parallels of football and business.
