It is the first volume to emphasize women's personal experiences and their life trajectories as mothers within the Peninsula and across the Atlantic. Although an official discourse that defined the conditions of motherhood emerged in the eighteenth century, before this period there were many different articulations of motherhood through which women negotiated hierarchical relationships, power struggles and alliances. While the individual experiences were unique and depended upon the positionality of race and class, the complexities of being a mother were universal. The wide variety of written and visual documents included in this volume highlight women's voices in the first person along with more subtle references to motherhood as well as silences. This collection broadens our understanding of the complexities of motherhood, addressing the pressures of becoming a mother, miscarriage, the acts of giving birth and lactation and the ordeals of raising children. Welcome to Episode 214! This episode contains a lot of biblio adventuring. Emily is in Traverse City, Michigan, helping her daughter, getting to know her new granddaughter, and discovering the many excellent Little Free Libraries in the area. She also shopped at Horizon Books and has been spending time at the Traverse City Library. Meanwhile, back in New England, Chris and “Colleen from Chicago” hit the road for a four-day Biblio Adventure Extravaganza that included Melville's Arrowhead, Wharton's The Mount, Emily Dickinson's family homes, The Homestead and The Evergreens, Amherst Books, and The Yiddish Book Center. The former bookstore coworkers capped it off with the annual Moby Dick marathon aboard the Charles W. Morgan at Mystic Seaport Museum. Oh, and she forgot to mention that they also went to the Odyssey Bookstore at Mount Holyoke. Phew, what a blast! We managed to finish a few books, too: Emily loved THE SNOW CHILD by Eowyn Ivey and appreciated its cold Alaska setting while reading in the heat of Michigan's summer. She listened to the audiobook version of Ann Napolitano's first novel, WITHIN ARM'S REACH, which features six narrators, and then two Audible Original short stories by Alice Hoffman, "The Bookstore Sisters" and "The Bookstore Wedding.” Chris read MOBY DICK by Herman Melville (that's twice this year) and a novelization about his relationship with Nathaniel Hawthorne, THE WHALE: A Love Story by Mark Beauregard. She also read her first book club selection from Book Browse, THE ROSE ARBOR, by Rhys Bowen. Happy Listening!

UPDATE BELOW!!!!Link to Sign the Petition: https://www.change.org/p/oppose-the-immediate-elimination-of-the-mount-holyoke-tennis-program On today's Conversations with Seven Sisters we have a special edition of the podcast where Jen speaks with members of the Mount Holyoke Tennis Team to discuss their team being cut without prior notice by the administration.  UPDATE! On the 21st of May the tennis team and our parents were offered a follow up meeting with our President, Dean of Students and Athletic Director. To begin this meeting, President Holley went through a list of points she wanted to dispute that she had been told from either faculty, alums and others who had written to her. She wanted to clarify that the decision had not been rash, Eric Cestero was apparently notified individually but the call was not received (we still believe that more effort could have been made), she did take into account the damage that would be caused to student-athletes which is why the smallest team was sacrificed. After this, the team began to discuss our request for 2 more years. We were told this is not possible, as she has already begun putting our $400,000 into other programs. We requested that we fundraise ourselves and only raise enough money for us to be able to play our NEWMAC matches for the next two years, or even one if that is all we can bargain for at the moment. This request was not taken seriously as they do not believe there is any way we can raise this money. However, based on all of the recent support we have received, we believe that this is certainly a possibility. Also, we were told that the $400,000 would not change, even if we only play an extremely minimized season. We found this to be quite counterintuitive and the details of how $400,000 has been calculated were not shared with us. Hopefully, when a similar meeting happens that has been promised with our alums it may be more transparent. Our Athletic Director and President then also brought up the issue of our outdoor courts. They are not deemed playable by NEWMAC and require 3 million in order to be resurfaced. We explained that, like with our most recent season, we can either ask other schools to play on our incredible indoor courts or we use Amherst or Smith's courts if outdoor play is required. To this, they replied that this would be complicated as other school's Athletic Directors must also be in agreement and not just the coaches. We have already been in discussion with other NEWMAC coaches and they would be more than willing to compromise, if this is what will allow us to stay alive. Our President nor our AD had a convincing argument as to why this should not be a viable option. Finally, they attacked our small roster size. Given our slightly smaller than average DIII tennis team, we performed well both on and off the court. Our President brought up the issue of our match against MIT during the season, where we were forced to forfeit two matches due to two of our players being unable to play. In Coach Aldo Santiago's 31 years, this has never happened! As you can agree, this hardly seems like fair justification for our team's sudden and cruel termination. Our AD then said that NEWMAC had complained that due to us not bringing a full roster, it meant that some MIT players may not have been able to receive all-conference honors. However, the NEWMAC fixed that situation immediately and they were honored. Our athletic director really narrowed in on this particular event however one of our players, Kirat Kaur, received this award this season. She is the first one to receive this honor from MHC since 2018, which just further shows how much more successful our team is. Additionally, the MHC Athlete who received this award in 2018 was also a member of the tennis team. Mount Holyoke did not mention this or

“Whether it's parents or alums or current students or faculty, everyone wants us to figure out how do you stop people from saying things that they don't agree with,” says the president of Mount Holyoke College, Danielle Holley, in this week's episode of The Syllabus. Holley and Oppenheimer discuss the complexities of defining hate speech versus protected free speech, as well as the intrusive nature of technology on campus. “I've had students who told me they want to study, but they can't put down their phones,” Holley says. Holley offers her predictions for how the Supreme Court's affirmative action ban will affect recruitment of minorities. And they talk about what it means to be a “women's college” in an age when there are self-identified men on campus.Guest Bio: Danielle R. Holley is president of Mount Holyoke College. Earlier in my life and, likely yours too, we put aside our desires, interests, and passions to care for and support others: employers, spouses, and children. Once we reach 50 plus, we are tired of this constant outside focus. We're ready to devote energy to ourselves, to restore our passion. I know I was an award-winning poet before family life took over. Because I wanted to reignite my own creativity, I was excited to meet and learn about art from Jennifer Croney Chernak. In this episode, Jennifer tells us her story about when she knew she was an artist. She shares her life journey of how she developed and grew her skills as an artist from childhood through liberal arts college at Mount Holyoke to working as an English then art teacher. While working, she continued to push boundaries in her own art. Even more than her journey, she shares specific art techniques using various media and surfaces for her painting. Discover her innovative and non-traditional approaches. What I love is how she combines urban and natural space in her art, focusing on the interface between nature and human constructs like buildings. Based in Philadelphia, she has a perfect location for exploring and pushing boundaries between human beings and the natural world. Jennifer gives us valuable advice for how to color outside the lines- transform your life as a 50 up woman by following your creative passion on your own and within communities. Are you ready to create the passion filled life you always wanted but had to ignore? Learn how in our Living Loud Living Long (L4) community and podcast. We support you in becoming. On this episode of FOCUS, Doug Vanderpoel joins from Mount Holyoke College to share insights into how his institution uses the TouchNet OneCard Campus ID (https://www.touchnet.com/id-management/onecard-campus-id) system to enhance the campus experience. From student ID management to ensuring campus safety and smart data monitoring, Mount Holyoke College has developed numerous unique and innovative uses for their OneCard system. Mount Holyoke College Mount Holyoke College, the oldest women's college in the U.S., was established in 1837 in South Hadley, Massachusetts. It is home to over 2,000 students and 80 major buildings across the campus' 800 acres. The college is a longtime TouchNet client, having implemented nearly every solution offered in the past 25 years. Most notable is the OneCard system, which Mount Holyoke has tailored to meet a wide range of needs. An Integrated Campus ID Program OneCard simplifies the student experience on campus. Students at Mount Holyoke use OneCard for their student ID, access to dorms and other campus buildings, meal plan swipes in the dining hall, tickets to events, vending, tracking packages, and even for POS transactions. After the school got the initial functions of OneCard up and running, they sought more ways to integrate it into campus life. Most recently, they've partnered with USEFULL (https://partners.touchnet.com/english/directory/partner/1512100/usefull-us), a TouchNet Ready Partner, to provide reusable takeout containers in the dining hall, which are monitored and paid for through OneCard. The campus also has 24/7 coffee machines that are integrated with OneCard, so students can use their ID for payment. Faculty can even use their IDs to activate the institution's gas and fuel stations to fill up the institution's fleet vehicles. Integrated safety measures The safety of students is paramount to Mount Holyoke College, as is evident in the measures they take to monitor access to dorms and buildings with OneCard. Mount Holyoke uses the system to grant or deny access to specific areas of the campus at any given time based on predetermined criteria, and on case-by-case situations if needed. When the school hosts conferences, attendees are given limited access with a visitor ID through OneCard for entry to the dining hall, presentation areas, and on-campus lodging accommodations for the duration of the conference. Mount Holyoke has also connected various sensors with the Master Security Monitor feature of OneCard to detect irregularities at sensitive places on campus. The system alerts campus staff when emergency showers and eyewash stations are used in labs, sensors are tripped in the art museum, and even when there is unexpected motion around the on-campus horse stables. Additionally, Mount Holyoke has connected panic buttons to the system as well for students and faculty to contact public safety in the case of emergencies. These panic buttons are also placed across campus in areas like the HR department, cash POS locations, practice rooms in the music department and more. If a button is pressed, public safety is notified immediately to respond to the location. OneCard as a data source The OneCard system is constantly gathering data, which Mount Holyoke decided to put to work in making informed decisions. It has given valuable insights into student behavior surrounding meal plans, dining hours, and dormitory capacity. The integration of the system with POS systems also aids in tracking popular food items, easing the product ordering process. Additionally, the ability to generate reports on dormitory usage and visitor patterns helps optimize campus resources. The key to implementation Having the right partner can make all the difference when setting up a system like OneCard. Listening to your teams and being communicative is one of the easiest ways to gain faculty and student adoption. “Just build good relationships and listen to people's issues and problems and know your system and understand that you can have an effect on that,” said Vanderpoel. As Mount Holyoke stands to prove, OneCard can be used in countless ways across campus. With the right approach and the right team, your institution can unlock the full potential of technology to enhance the overall student experience. Special Guest: Doug Vanderpoel.

In 1897, a Mount Holyoke College junior named Bertha Mellish disappears from campus overnight, leaving no word for her family. It's a time when female college students are still considered “queer” (in the old sense of peculiar as well as the modern understanding of the word), although the college administrators insist that their primary purpose is to produce excellent wives and mothers. But even this community of oddities considers Bertha strange, by which the other girls mean that she pays too little attention to parties and boys, too much to her schoolwork and social causes. Bertha's only true friend is Agnes Sullivan, a young woman from a poor Boston family who has been forced to conceal her Catholic upbringing to gain admission to the college. Agnes, a would-be doctor (an even greater anomaly in late 19th-century culture than a woman with a college education, although not inconceivable), grieves Bertha's absence but insists she has no idea where Bertha might be. Dragging the rivers and lakes turns up nothing, supposed sightings of the missing girl lead nowhere, and the police would be willing to write the case off as closed if only her relatives and the family doctor would let it go. Almost from the beginning, it's clear that Agnes knows far more than she lets on, but finding out what really happened to Bertha and why is a long, winding trail of suspense. Through the overlapping stories of Agnes, Bertha's sister Florence, Dr. Henry Hammond, and the inspector whom Hammond hires to find the missing girl, Katharine Beutner keeps us on the edge of our seats as she unravels their tangle of secrets and lies. Perhaps the most intriguing element is knowing that however fictional the plot and many of the characters, the story derives from the real-life disappearance of a Mount Holyoke student in 1897, the mystery of which has never been solved. For the Record, An AACRAO Podcast

Did you know that what we consider the “standard” letter grade system is a relatively recent phenomenon in US higher education? The history of grades and grading schemes is a long and circuitous tale that illustrates how higher education has evolved over time. From the first categorization of student learning in 1785 at Yale to the first letter grade system in 1897-1898 at Mount Holyoke, through the standardization of student records and grading schemes in the early to mid-20th century, registrars have been involved at every step of the way. This episode highlights the historical interplay of society and higher education through the lens of the student learning assessment practices, e.g. grades.  Key Takeaways:There were a variety of different approaches to assessing student learning in early US higher education. These systems coalesced around categories, ranking, and quality points to give us the standard letter grade system we know today. The enduring variance in institutional grading schemes and grading practices highlights the inherent power of the faculty at each different institution, and makes the work of the registrar critical for accurate record-keeping. Grades and grading schemes will continue to evolve and change, as external pressures (like a pandemic) necessitate new approaches to grading, and as faculty continue to explore the best, and more appropriate ways to assess and communication student learning and achievement.Host:Doug McKenna, University RegistrarGeorge Mason Universitycmckenn@gmu.edu Very Special Guest:LTC (Ret.)
