She spent the next 7 years in federal prison dealing with the heartache of leaving her husband and children behind. The most life changing thing, but when you know who you are to your god, you can do the hardest things, and I spent a lot of time trying to find that peace. I would go out into the rec yard and say ‘I just need to feel it again' and I would! You've been in prison so you get it. There's a special spirit there. There's a spirit of healing and I would surrender to that and that's where I would tell God ‘I hurt my kids, please take care of them.' It was a painful process, but I know now who I am. I would do it again to know who I am.” 38:01-38:45

Portia Louder: Prison, Redemption and Life   What would you say if a federal judge gave you a seven year prison sentence? Portia Louder was a wife, a mom and a realtor. It was the realtor role that landed her in prison. During the hey days of the real estate boom in the mid 2000's Portia was buying and selling overvalued properties. The appraisals were manipulated. When the market crashed, the owners and the banks were on the hook for the appraised value. That brought in the FBI and suddenly Portia's life changed radically. "I walked into a Federal prison. Prison was the hardest thing that I did, and the most sacred, beautiful experience of my life" Portia's journey through the prison system became a journey into herself.  "Be willing to consider that there is a rason for this and allow it to transform you. Be willing to wak through that pain that seems impossible to walk through." The time away from the outside world gave Portia time to reflect. How would she choose to respond to this experience? Stripped of her societal identities and roles, who was she? What did she truly value? The woman that emerged from Federal prison is compassionate, wise and very very real. This is a story about our values, judgements, acceptance, and personal evolution. And so much more.   Coming Soon! The Book. In this episode I am talking to Portia Louder about her story and how it led her to being sentenced to 4.5 years in federal prison. Portia and I crossed paths after she reached out to me after hearing or seeing a guest appearance that I did on a podcast called "Louder Now". We had a phone conversation, set up a date to record and I had to cancel because I went back to work. Another cool fact about something we both share. Both of us have been to The Other Side Academy to tell our stories. * * Here is a little bit about Portia from her: * Portia Louder, built a photography company that photographed 200 weddings a year in Utah, and surrounding states. She became involved in real estate in 2004 and was investigated and indicted for mortgage fraud. Portia was sentenced to a 7 year prison sentence, and served 4.5 years in federal prison, in California, and Minnesota. * She has documented much of that experience on her blog and Facebook page. She addresses addiction, loneliness, self awareness, and what it takes to move past mistakes and setbacks in life. Portia developed a love and sisterhood with the women she met in prison, and just finished writing a book highlighting many of their stories. * Portia has been married to her husband Chad for 24 years; they have 5 children and one grandchild and live in Highland Utah. She currently works at a treatment center helping women work through trauma, and overcoming addiction. * * What bottom or life struggle would you like to share with our audience? * Taking full ownership brought power back into my life to look forward, set goals, and dream again. Accountability is freedom for me. Every struggle had the seeds of transformation. It's up to me to decide how my story ends and I want an amazing ending! * * You can find Portia here: * Website: https://lawsunbroken.com/ * Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/portialouder/ * * Book Suggestions: * The 7 Habits of Highly effective People - https://amzn.to/3cXiYDZ/ * Mans Search for Meaning - https://amzn.to/3pXFh1y * * --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/no-where-to-go-but-up/message

Portia Louder joins Steve to talk about her addiction to opiates and time in Federal Prison. Her denial about what she was doing in the Real Estate World that got her thrown into jail before she ever plead guilty. County jail was hell as she was forced to detox from a large opiate addiction that literally took her to the precipice of losing her mind. After pleading guilty and spending over a year in prison she still was in denial about her actions. It wasn't until she was transferred to a prison in Minnesota that she started to look inward and realize that where she was, the people she hurt were a direct result of her actions and hers alone. The Freedom she found once she was able to take ownership started not only to impact her life, but the lives of inmates and their families. She wrote programs for the prison and just recently released her book Living Louder - A compassionate Journey through Federal PrisonHer book is now on more than 500,000 ipads in Federal prisons across the country impacting the lives of thousands and thousands of inmates. How did a mother of 5 living in Utah end up with 8 years in Prison? From an outsider looking in, Portia had it all figured out. She was married to a wonderful man, she was a devote member of her local church community, was supportive of her 5 children all while running a successful photography business. As her photography business began to take off, she dipped her hands into the real-estate market. Her business exploded and she became lost in the adventure. Portia was ultimately investigated by the FBI and remarkably sentenced to prison on Federal charges. The journey to prison was one to talk about, but her ability to overcome her addiction is even more remarkable. Portia had to detox on the prison floor. Once she got through it and identified her purpose, Portia changed the lives of the women she served with. Portia's story is emotional and honest. She is strong and resilient. She overcame her demons and uses that motivation to share strength and hope with everyone she meets. Please subscribe to the Chase The Vase Podcast and leave us a review.
