Eric Wachtman is a CG / VFX Supervisor and Art Director at LAIKA where he's been working for nearly 20 years. Prior to that, he served as the Director of CG / Visual Effects and Art Director at the Cartoon Network. LAIKA was founded in 2005 in Oregon and is guided by the vision of its President & CEO Travis Knight. Located just outside Portland, Oregon, LAIKA was awarded a Scientific and Technology Oscar® for its innovation in 3D printing in 2016.  Its five films – MISSING LINK (2019); KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS (2016); THE BOXTROLLS (2014); PARANORMAN (2012), and CORALINE (2009) – were all nominated for Oscars® and PGA Awards as Outstanding Animated Film.  MISSING LINK was the first LAIKA film to win the Golden Globe® for Best Animated Feature and was awarded two Visual Effects Society (VES) awards for Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature and Outstanding Animated Character, and received seven Annie Award nominations. In this episode we meet Don Graham, a retired emergency medicine doctor, a long-time member of the Portland Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, and a Rhododendron gardener extra-ordinaire. We find out how he successfully transitioned his love of Rhododendron from a large-scale outdoor rock garden to a small-but-mighty indoor garden prominently featuring tropical epiphytic Rhododendron species known as Vireyas. Don shares techniques he's used to transform his second-floor condominium and balcony into a botanical wonderland so spectacular that passersby are known to shout their praise up from below, and we learn that the best thing about growing a Vireya garden in your house is that you can expect blooms anytime. Recalling the words of biographer and historian Jenny Uglow, “We may think we are nurturing our garden, but of course it's our garden that is really nurturing us.”

On episode 23 of “Enjoying the Journey”, we are so excited and honored to be joined by Mr. Steve Hanamura! Born in a Japanese internment camp during World War II, and blind for his entire life, Steve lives with an enthusiasm and perspective every day that is truly amazing. He is the president and founder of Hanamura Consulting, Inc., a firm he founded in 1986 to provide coaching, training, consulting, and speaking. He is widely sought after in the areas of leadership development and innovation, managing and leading diversity initiatives, building effective teams, working with people with disabilities and managing personal and organizational change. Steve has authored two books, “In Search of Vision” and “I Can See Clearly“, and has served as past president of the Portland Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development (now ATD, the Association for Talent Development) and was chair of the board with the Oregon Commission for the Blind for six years. He is an emeritus member of the Diversity Collegium, a group of thought leaders in the field of diversity. Beyond the numerous awards Steve has received for his leadership and diversity training, he was an Olympic Torchbearer for the 1996 Olympics! Though blind, he enjoys running and is an avid sports fan, and he and his wife, Becky, live in Beaverton, Oregon, and have 3 adult sons. Rob and Steve had such an amazing time talking about staying positive and hope-filled through the things life throws our way (and their specific situations), and being “transmitters of hope”, and we are so happy to have you listening in!!!

Tamika Butler is the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust. In her current role she grows healthier, safer, and stronger communities through the creation of urban parks and community gardens—addressing the critical lack of green and recreational spaces in greater Los Angeles' underserved neighborhoods. Prior to this, Butler was the the executive director of the Los Angeles Bicycle Coalition, bringing energy and passion to the quest for better bicycle access. Keyonda McQuarters stepped up as the Portland Chapter's admin of Black Girls Do Bike over a year ago and has been leading two rides on average per week ever since. Black Girls Do Bike is a national organization with over 75 local chapters. The organization was created to champion efforts introducing the joy of cycling to all women, but especially black women and girls.

We Have Chris Miller from the North Carolina Triad Chapter and he tells us what they have planned as we take over the Panthers house like we always do and Chris has a lot to update what they have going on .  Then we bring on Alex Carson from the Seattle Chapter and Joshua Billips from the Portland chapter teaming up for week 3 in Seattle and they talk on how we shut down the 12's and what they have planned for the Seattle game and where everyone is meeting .

Central Library hosted readings and presentations commemorating Oregon's late poet laureate on Sunday, January 25, 2009.Featured participants included: Jim Scheppke presents “William Stafford and the Oregon Poetry Collection.” Mr. Scheppke has been State Librarian of Oregon since 1991. Ellen Louise Hart and Holly Springfield present “Where the Right Word Again Begins Time”: William Stafford and Emily Dickinson. Ms. Hart writes about Emily Dickinson's manuscripts, and about prosody and the visual line in Dickinson's poetry and correspondences. Ms. Springfield is a meditation teacher, storyteller and independent student and teacher of Emily Dickinson’s poetry and founder of the Portland Chapter of the Emily Dickinson International Society (EDIS). Don Colburn is a health reporter for The Oregonian. Kirsten Rian was recently nominated for inclusion in the 2008 Best New Poets anthology. Joseph A. Soldati, host for the program, has published numerous poems and essays in a variety of literary journals and anthologies, including most recently The Litchfield Review, The Enigmatist, and Writers Dojo. His poem, “Elegy” will appear in the forthcoming (April 2009) anthology Beloved on the Earth: 150 Poems of Grief and Gratitude. Target Audience: Adults
