Magicians Without Borders has brought free magic shows to 40 countries and approximately a million people, and it provides free three-to-four-year education programs in magic to thousands of young people in “the forgotten places of the world.” Carlos Lopez, a leader of Magicians Without Borders, unpacks the developmental power of magic when it is taught to young people in impoverished communities. “If your situation seems impossible,” he says. “If you see and experience wonder, it might awaken hope that the impossible can become possible.” Chatting with host Desire Wandan, Lopez shares his journey from a privileged life in Bogota, Colombia, to teaching magic in slums and refugee camps worldwide. In the process, he has, in his words, helped to create “social tissue that is weaving lives together that were not supposed to be intertwined.” Website: https://www.magicianswithoutborders.com/ https://www.carloslopez.co/ Instagram: @carloshlopez @magicianswithoutborders ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. Host Desire Wandan talks with Abbie VanMeter, Executive Director of Collaborative Innovation for the Coordinated Management of Meaning Institute, and Don Waisanen, Professor at Baruch College, CUNY Marxe School of Public and International Affairs. Their conversation focuses on Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM)—a communication theory and a lived practice—which approaches human communication as how we together create meaning. “CMM and social therapeutics have a shared understanding of human beings as builders of the social world,” says VanMeter. This conversation provides a concise and clear introduction to this important social constructionist approach to interpersonal communication, and its potential impact on our weary and wounded world stuck in age-old communication traps. In this episode, I discussed how Capitalism came into being, broadly, and how this process and its contradictions have led us to where we are today. I speak generally about how Feudalism was thrown into the dustbin of history through the collective action of the poor in alliance with the newly forming Capitalist class, and how this class of exploiters took advantage of the people's will to seize power for themselves. We discuss the movement towards Capitalism, the transition from "Free Market Capitalism" to Imperialism, how Imperialism, monopolies, and crises are a part of Capitalism's natural development, and how this intrinsic logic led us to today. In the next episode I intend to go deeper into the last 80-100 years to show how history doesn't exactly "repeat itself" but rather, comes in echoes. All Power to the People!

The randomiser wheel picked "Power Through". I'm currently using a tool to select phrases for my daily journal practice. They are all associated with the theme of Strength. At first, these words brought to mind experiences when I had no choice but to keep going. A looming deadline, the chockful calendar, a stag do, a festival, and the final push with the finish line in sight. Powering through requires a special kind of energy. Dipping in and drawing from the storeroom where I keep my deep reserves. This can feel glorious. It can feel rewarding. It can feel like a relief and something I wish never to repeat. To collapse in a heap at the end. The moment when Farmer Hoggett's words echo in my soul; “that'll do, pig. That'll do.” I can pack up, curl up, and rest. Letting The Body Prepare For as long as I can remember, I have experienced a kind of lethargy on the day of a gig. I often feel like I won't have the energy to perform. I seem to yawn through the afternoon, wondering how I will ever summon the inner resources to do what I need to do. “OK”, I would tell myself, “you've just got to power through”. As soon as I hit the road, I could feel the flow returning, and by the time I hit the stage, I was in the zone. I've come to accept this part of the process in all its frustrating mystery, trusting that the energy will come, however much it feels like there is no way I could not fall asleep at the piano. Over time, I've come to see that this is not about “powering through”; it's about letting things be. To power through turns it into a battle or fight. Like I'm in a constant wrestle with myself. And that takes a different kind of energy. On the other hand, letting things be is about surrendering to what I know is true, recognising that I won't feel up to performing in the lead-up to a gig, and remembering that my body is preparing and readying me for the performance. I don't need to fix that; I need to simply let it be. If I jump to my “power-through” reserves, believing I must intervene to feel up to it, I will derail my natural processes, hit the bottom of the barrel more quickly and need much more time to recover afterwards. Powering Through as The Exception, Not The Rule Humans are rhythmic, seasonal, and cyclical. Our bodies are remarkable and can power through when the situation demands it as the exception, not the rule. But when we are stuck in that mode, which is how we have designed many aspects of modern life, many people perpetually power through on the fumes of those reserves. It's no wonder we are burning out. If we are expected to be “on” constantly, we might perpetually wrestle with ourselves. Berating our inability to maintain the energy required to stay productive in what Byung Chul-Han calls achievement society. Excessive “can” positivity and self-optimisation paradoxically lead to burnout and fatigue because there are no natural stopping points. Even in rest and play, we have become trained in self-exploitative productivity in choosing and approaching leisure time. If it can't be measured, it's meaningless. If it's not helping us advance, then it's pointless. And when we reach the inevitable tipping point, we consume to help us escape, retreat, and numb ourselves. This often goes against our creative nature - the quiet voice inside telling us to slow down and sense the world around, within, and between us. All Power and No Play When considering creativity and nurturing a sensitive nervous system, we must unite and break free from these chains of toxic productivity. We can embrace and enjoy the times of blossoming and fruition. We can accept and attune ourselves to periods of fallowness and the in-between. Without silence, we cannot hear the music. Without margins, we cannot see the shape of things. Despite what some people want us to believe, we are not labouring machines. We can't keep pushing ourselves without paying a serious price.
The San Diego, California-based Imagine Brave Spaces does just that—imagine brave spaces. This performance activist organization, founded in 2021, uses play, performance, theatre, and other arts to help children, young people, and adults create spaces and engage in activities through which, in the words of Co-founder and Director of Programs Catherine Hanna Schrock, they can, “see what is not yet there, to picture the possibilities of what can be.” In this in-depth interview conducted by Desire Wandan and Dan Friedman, she asks, “Isn't it a courageous thing to dream, to hope that things could get better?” and shares how Imagine Brave Spaces uses Forum Theatre, Playback Theatre, Interview Theatre, and creative community conversations to empower people to ask, “What if?” www.imaginebravespaces.com Instagram- @imaginebravespaces ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. Katie BEE (aka Kate McGlynn) is a remarkable human being who has lived her life saying “yes” and then figuring it out. She has been a teen peer counselor, taught improv, laughter yoga and meditation. She worked for 12 years as a street performer in Europe, as a circus performer all over the world, and as a performance-inspired community organizer in Detroit and other cities. In 2021 with the pandemic raging, Katie founded the Joy First Foundation and spent the next three years living in a trailer traveling the U.S.A. bringing joy to the nation's front-line workers—retail workers, nurses, airline employees—who gave so much with so little appreciation during the pandemic. Her mission soon broadened, and she spent her days visiting dinners, hospitals, bars, airports, shopping centers, etc. talking to strangers, thanking everyone she met for waking up that morning. “Appreciation, Recognition, Acknowledgement, and Gratitude” are, she says are windows that let the joy in. “You can lift a person up so easily because no one else is appreciating them.” In this conversation with host Desire Wandan, Katie BEE shares her life story, the relationship between humor, appreciation and development, and welcomes all to travel the road of joy she helping to build. Malia Gilbert-Neal, the executive director of Arts Well, grew up poor and Black in Philadelphia and has been creating community empowerment organizations her entire adult life. In conversation with host Desire Wandan, she shares her life story and the work of Art Well, founded in 2000 in response to chronic community violence in Philly. Today Art Well partners with over 400 organizations to bring arts related activities to schools, libraries, health and social service organizations throughout the Philadelphia area. In all her work Gilbert-Neal strives to focus on the wellness of individuals, communities and the earth. “America makes it very hard to be well. We're all experiencing the same capitalism that is overworking and underpaying people, expecting them to make huge sacrifices of themselves for the sake of profit and dollars. We're all experiencing the same racism, sexism and challenges to our human rights,” says Gilbert-Neal. “We're all swimming in these systems of oppression, so it's really important to talk about wellness and how to sustain it.” www.theartwell.org Instagram: @Maliaknowsthings ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. Thank you. We know that God by His power created the heavens and earth. But since the fall of mankind, there has been nothing but a struggle for power. The entire Bible begins and ends with the war for power. In every facet of life there is a wrestle for power. Satan is behind this problem as he is power hungry. He has his ultimate plan to produce his "man of sin" so he can have full world power and worship through him. A few nights ago there was a presidential campaign that clearly demonstrated that power has collapsed in our nation. I saw no winner. I saw the end. There are world powers going to war to obtain power over another. Israel is going to war against Hezbollah to eradicate their power. Ichabod is now engraved on mostly every church. There is nothing now but "confusion, noise and garments rolled in blood." In the word David said, "God hath spoken once, twice have I heart this, that power belongeth unto God." Psalm 62:11. Before Jesus went to heaven He said, "All power in heaven and earth hath been given unto me." Matt. 28:18. We are not only given power to become the sons (and daughters of God), but power in Christ as becoming something "more than conquerors." All powers are collapsing world-wide including our own and this nation is NOT coming back. So keep in mind that "All-Power" is living in you and THAT power will always overpower all other lesser powers that are fading away. We are children of the living God who possess heavenly power that is ours now until the very end. Exercise yourselves in His power that is in you in advancing prayer and reading your Bibles and singing. Even the saints that come out of their graves arise singing from it. Isaiah 26:16-20. “Some Day Someone is going to pick up this book (The Bible) and believe it, and put us all to shame.”― Leonard Ravenhill, Why Revival Tarries: A Classic on Revival --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joanie-stahl/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joanie-stahl/support

La Transplanisphère, based in Paris, France, has been doing cutting-edge political theatre for two decades bringing artists, students, and “ordinary people” together to explore the political and cultural challenges facing Europe as it becomes more diverse. In residence, since 2018, at the Lycée Albert Schweitzer in Le Raincy, a working-class suburb of Paris, La Transplanisphére has, among many other things, developed methods for teachers who want to use play and performance to explore political issues and the challenges of cross-cultural dialogue with their students. In this episode, Bruno Freyssinet, founder and artistic director of La Transplanisphère, shares the theatre's history and discusses how, “through play you find the kid in you, you find the openness, the lightness which has the power to totally change your relationship with the ‘Other.'” This episode is hosted by Desire Wandan and Dan Friedman. https://latransplanisphere.com/ https://www.instagram.com/latransplanisphere/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/bruno-freyssinet-55200062/ ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. Love doves!Just before publishing I saw the news that Julian Assange has been released on bail. Jaw-dropping news I wasn't sure I'd ever see. Bless you Julian!! Keep that security detail tight. Godspeed. I'll have more on this soon but in short: a great day for Julian and his family, but a not-so-great day for whistleblowers & free speech. His plea deal legitimizes the B.S. charges against him, and thus true press freedom remains on life support. Don't conflate investigative journalism with espionage! On to today's Energy Audio Tidbit: I felt inspired to jump on the mic and articulate the importance of remaining grounded in optimism even while fearlessly facing the hard facts we see in our feeds. It's about wanting more, and believing in more, not dwelling solely upon negativity, nor caving in to drama, cynicism, or lazy thinking. This EAT is about transcending the outrage treadmill and working productively to raise the collective consciousness, and to inspire hope in the possibility of a world we can be proud of. Let's move past the tired old in-group/out-group dichotomy (backbone of the totalitarian duopoly), and see through the quadrennial dog and pony circus we are once again being forced to endure. Don't allow your intellect to be so freely insulted by the ruling class and their legion of behavior managing PR ghouls. The corporate media is not your friend. Don't let yourself be brainwashed. Cissie Gool House was an abandoned hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, empty and decaying for 40 years, when homeless activists snuck past security on the night of March 27, 2017, and began an occupation that, seven years later, has transformed it into a vibrant self-governing community of 1,000 formerly homeless, evicted, and displaced people. Two leaders of Cissie Gool House, Karen Hendricks and Fagmeedah Ling, join host Desire Wandan to discuss how the residents themselves renovated the building, set up working committees to deal with elder, youth, maintenance and security issues, and expanded their occupation into a movement that now convenes “Peoples' Assemblies” to teach others about tenants' rights, fights evictions, monitors the housing courts, and agitates for enforcement of South Africa's constitution, which declares that, “everyone has the right to have access to adequate housing.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4iG4wYQeu0&t=12s This 6-minute clip explains the occupation and features Karen This is the website link to Reclaim The City: https://reclaimthecity.org.za/ An NPR article about the three occupations part of Reclaim the City. https://news.wjct.org/2022-12-24/inside-south-africas-hijacked-buildings-all-we-want-is-a-place-to-call-home ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. The Homeless World Cup, founded in 2003, today brings unhoused people together in 70 countries to connect through the universal language of football, each year culminating in a World Cup tournament in a different city. Founder and leader Mel Young, and formerly homeless player turned referee Sarah Frohwein talk with host Desire Wanden about why and how the Homeless World Cup was born, spread across the planet, and is bringing dignity and community to those without a home. “How on earth have we created a system that leaves millions of people living on the streets?” asks Young. “It's crazy. We don't have to have it. We sent men to the moon, we invented the internet, and we can fix it. The aim of the Homeless World Cup is not to exist because there will be no homelessness.” www.homelessworldcup.org ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. My Valiant Warrior,In the quiet dawn of this new day, as the world awakens to the possibilities that lie ahead, let your heart be still and hear My voice. You have been chosen, handpicked for a purpose that transcends the ordinary, for a mission that is integral to My kingdom. Reflect on the words I spoke regarding My servant Paul in Acts 9:15: "But the Lord said to Ananias, 'Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.'" Like Paul, you, too, have been called by Me, set apart for My glorious purpose.Understand, My beloved, that this calling is not a burden but an honor, a privilege granted to those whom I have equipped and empowered. You are My chosen instrument, a vessel through which My love, My truth, and My power will flow into a world in need. Your life is not just a series of random events but a divinely orchestrated narrative, where each chapter, each scene, each moment is imbued with My presence and purpose. As you step out into the world today, carry this truth in your heart. You are not just walking through life; you are walking in My authority and power. You are not merely interacting with people; you are My ambassador to them, a bearer of the Good News, a light in the darkness. The words you speak, the love you show, the compassion you extend – these are not just expressions of your character but manifestations of My presence in your life.Do not be daunted by the magnitude of this calling. I have not left you to fulfill it in your own strength. Just as I was with Paul, guiding him, strengthening him, and using him to impact nations, so I am with you. My Spirit dwells within you, providing wisdom for every decision, courage for every challenge, and power for every task.Today, as you face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, do so with the confidence that you are My chosen warrior. You are equipped for every battle, prepared for every encounter, and destined for victory. The enemy may try to discourage you, to sow seeds of doubt and fear, but stand firm in My promise, in the assurance of your calling.Take time today to commune with Me, to listen for My voice, and to seek My guidance. In these moments of quiet fellowship, I will renew your strength, refresh your spirit, and rekindle the fire of your calling. You will find that, in My presence, there is clarity, peace, and a renewed sense of purpose.Go forth, My warrior, with boldness and faith. Know that I am with you, that My hand is upon you, and that through you, My name will be proclaimed to the nations. You are My chosen instrument, and through you, My kingdom will advance, and My will be done on earth as it is in heaven. With Unending Love and Unfailing Faith,Your Almighty Father, God of All Power and AuthorityMy Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. One caught our ears with the Gen Zers remixing Christmas carols. Let's listen to one. I thought it might be fun to remix my own Christmas carol, but not just any ole one– Jingle Bells, WHICH, if you didn't know… Was performed at Ordway Hall on Sept. 15, 1857, in blackface, during a minstrel show! James Lord Pierpont was the writer and composer who also wrote confederate anthems during the Civil War. (27:31) - BIG UP - TO ADELE'S UNMITIGATED GALL & CONFIDENCE In an interview she said– “With my music, and for whoever listens to it, I think I'm not the best singer in the world at all, but no one else can sing my songs like me because they didn't write them. No one can sing my songs like me, period.” “The lyrics are not their own, and I don't think anyone else should sing my songs.” “The Queen of Soul might be the one exception. Apart from Aretha Franklin,” Adele amended when asked about the late legend's cover of “Rolling in the Deep.” LET DOWN - Even robots are racist, y'all!! In 2020 with the pandemic ravishing Brazil and the country's president doing nothing to combat it, a group of progressive Brazilian educators, led by Dr. Fernanda Liberali, of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and an East Side Institute Associate, found a way to move forward through play. Inspired by the Global Play Brigade, which was (and is) bringing play and performance out around the world through Zoom, they organized the Brincadas, which have taken play into the schools and streets of São Paulo. In this episode, a group of Brincadas share how play gave them a way to breathe during a suffocating moment and to go beyond traditional education to, “play with serious injustice. We're not teaching, we're building ensembles for social change and play is the means for building the ensemble." This episode features the voices of Bianca Sgai, Franco Medeiros, Barbara Manja Daniela B. On the 30th Anniversary of the Taos Institute, co-founder Kenneth Gergen shares the birth of social constructionism, its challenge to the assumptions of modernism, and the impact it has had both in and beyond the academy. During this wide-ranging conversation with host Desire Wandan, Gergen discusses the practices, such as appreciative inquiry and narrative therapy, that social constructionism has helped to inspire, along with its decades-long interface and mutual influence with social therapeutics. In this time of intense mistrust and partisanship, he looks to relationality as a way forward, pointing out, “We don't have to agree on everything in order to create a wonderful world together.” https://www.taosinstitute.net/ ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. We are republishing Alan Wood's series on the Russian Revolution as a podcast, originally released to mark the centenary of the greatest event in human history. In part four, Alan discusses the counter-revolution that reared its head in the July Days. Terrified by the outbreak of mass, armed demonstrations with the slogan "All Power to the Soviets", the Provisional Government suppressed the leaders of the Revolution. The Bolshevik offices and printing press were shut down, with Lenin driven into hiding. These events marked a turning point in the revolution. From this moment on, dual power had ended. Only two options remained: either the forces of reaction would crush the revolution, or the Bolsheviks would lead the masses to take power.
Francine Kilemann and Marcia Donadel are bringing their experience with site-specific, immersive theatre to elementary school education in Brazil. Through Plato Cultural they lead students and teachers in creating fictional worlds in which the children become “SOS Agents” from the future tasked with helping to save the environment. The months-long performance is one in which nothing is taught in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, the students learn through the experience of performing. “Once we enter this fictional world,” says Kilemann, “we can ask ‘What if?' and a range of possibilities emerge that we wouldn't have if we had limited ourselves to the ‘facts.'” Hosted by Desire Wandan. ----more---- Welcome to All Power to the Developing, a podcast of the East Side Institute. Help is when someone provides assistance or aid, when they use their resources or services to make it easier for you to do something God assists us, aids us, and makes it Possible for us to do what we could not otherwise do. God is the Source of Our Help. He doesn't Just help us but the bible says He is a Very Present Help in Trouble! God is an On Time God. He doesn't show up after you need Him or with insufficient resources, when He comes, He has All Power in His hands and He is Always on Time. Some choose to trust in government or friends or money but All of my help comes from the Lord. God is the Source of My Help!
