Hace unos meses empecé a usar presentaciones para grabar el podcast, y enseguida me di cuenta de que el verdadero problema no es pensar el contenido, sino maquetarlo. Pasaba más tiempo ajustando fuentes, colores y transiciones que preparando lo que realmente quería contar. Así que me puse a buscar una solución, y lo que encontré me ha cambiado el flujo de trabajo por completo.En este episodio te cuento cómo he montado typst-ia, un script en Python que genera presentaciones completas en segundos. Le dices un tema, la inteligencia artificial se encarga del contenido, y Typst lo convierte en un PDF impecable. Todo desde la terminal, sin abrir PowerPoint ni Google Slides, sin suscripciones mensuales, y con un control total sobre el resultado.Typst es un sistema de composición moderno escrito en Rust que compila en milisegundos. Sí, has leído bien, milisegundos. Comparado con LaTeX Beamer, que tarda 5 o 10 segundos en compilar, Typst es un antes y un después. Además, su sintaxis es mucho más limpia y fácil de aprender. En el episodio lo comparo con LaTeX y con Markdown, y te cuento por qué creo que Typst se está convirtiendo en el estándar para presentaciones técnicas.La clave del proceso está en el system prompt. Incrusto el template real de la presentación dentro del prompt que le envío a OpenRouter, y la IA genera código Typst válido sin necesidad de retoques. Uso DeepSeek Chat por defecto —cuesta unos 14 céntimos por millón de tokens de entrada, que vienen a ser cientos de presentaciones por menos de un euro—, pero también puedes usar Claude Sonnet, Gemini Flash o Llama 3.3 si necesitas más calidad o prefieres un modelo concreto.El script completo son unas 200 líneas de Python sin frameworks, solo con la librería requests. Te explico paso a paso cómo funciona el pipeline: lee el template, construye el prompt, llama a OpenRouter, limpia la respuesta, escribe el archivo .typ, lo compila a PDF y lo abre en el visor. Y todo con flags para personalizar el número de diapositivas, el modelo, el nombre del archivo y hasta los reintentos si la compilación falla.Para rematar, hago una demo en vivo generando una presentación desde cero. Ves cómo en cuestión de segundos pasamos de una idea a un PDF listo para proyectar. Y lo mejor es que el resultado es texto plano, versionable con Git, editable con cualquier editor, y sin ningún tipo de lock-in. Piše Vid Bešter, bere Jure Franko. Borut Kraševec nam že na prvih straneh svojega drugega romana Dan spomina daje vedeti, da meri visoko. Vse bo stalo, kot je treba, napove, ko pred nami metodično in kot po pravilu razlaga elemente romana … Prav vse, kar položi pred nas, podaja kakšno informacijo ali pa draži s še neznanim razpletom. Nič ni odveč ‒ in vse je polno sladkih bralskih obetov! Še največja draž za bralca pa je morda prav vprašanje, ali bo roman v svoji ambiciji uspel? Ali bo čehovovska pištola ustrelila? Dan spomina se dogaja v poznih tridesetih letih 20. stoletja. Prvi del v podeželski graščini, ki je že videla boljše čase, drugi pa v Ljubljani. Osrednji lik je Dušan ‒ bivši primorski zdravnik, ki je pred fašizmom zbežal v Jugoslavijo. Službo dramaturga in prevajalca mu je preskrbel tast, stanovanje na Rimski ulici tašča, preglavice pa mu povzroča žena Lili, ki ni le bolj literarno nadarjena od njega, ampak je tudi alkoholičarka. Prav to je povod, da se Dušan na začetku romana odpravi v odročno graščino Lilijine sestrične Eme, kjer se pred posledicami svoje finančne nesposobnosti skriva njegov tast Tine. Zasnova je torej zavestno klasična: liki se ‒ tako ali drugače ‒ zberejo v od sveta malce oddaljenem salonu, kjer bodo njihovih odnosi dani na preizkušnjo in ogled. Ali pa bo morda kdo umorjen? Poleg Dušana in njegovega tasta so med obiskovalci in gosti graščine še en primorski begunec, komunist in tihotapec Dino, kapitalist Kraljič, ki snubi gospodarico, ter njena sestra, propadla pianistka Karmina, ki se je vrnila z Dunaja. Kmalu se jim pridružita še Lili in njena mama Vida, premožna in ugledna ljubljanska gospodarstvenica. Vsak ima seveda kakšno umazano skrivnost ali kak nečasten up, ki ga skriva pred drugimi, pred sabo in pred nami. Pripovedovalec je tretjeoseben, a ne povsem odkrit. Malo zato, ker vedno privzema perspektivo kakega lika, predvsem pa, ker rad kaj zamolči. Sprva si bralec marsikaj obeta: toliko namigov in skrivnosti je vsepovsod! Seksualnost na primer ni prav nič prikrita, pogosto je nazorno opisana ‒ a aferici, ki si jo privoščita od žene odtujeni Dušan in od nacističnega moža ločena Karmina, nismo neposredno priče. Tudi druge bolj ali manj hvalevredne strasti, misli in dejanja so včasih odkrito priznana, drugič pa nanje le namigujejo besede ali okoliščine. Kraševcu je očitno všeč, če nas za trenutek zmede s spremembo pripovedne ravni, perspektive ali časovnim preskokom. Besede, misli in podobe s konca enega poglavja pogosto odzvanjajo v začetku naslednjega, nakar se izkaže, da se pripoved pravzaprav nadaljuje nekje drugje. Podobno se znotraj poglavij stapljajo in rimajo sanje z budnostjo in spomini s sedanjostjo likov. Morda bi se komu lahko zazdelo, da pisatelj ni vešč svoje obrti, a je očitno, da bralce namerno mede ‒ saj je sicer zelo pozoren, da nam nudi oporo in nas vztrajno opozarja na čas in kraj dogajanja, na relevantne podatke iz biografije likov ter odnose med njimi. Tudi to bi utegnil kdo kritizirati, češ da pisatelj bralca preveč previdno vodi za roko. Sam bi mu raje poočital, da se morda vseeno malo preveč postavlja z obvladovanjem pripovedniških trikov. Že kar nekoliko objesten je, ko nam vedno znova prikazuje, da zlahka in z eleganco upošteva in krši vsa pravila klasične romaneskne pripovedi. Seveda ima roman Dan spomina temu primerno visokoleteče vsebinske ambicije. Številne omembe in namigi na klasično književnost ‒ še posebej izstopata Balzac in Čehov ‒ je treba morda razumeti kot naznanitev merila, s katerim naj bralci roman ocenjujemo. Tematsko je roman precej širok. Varanja in skrite strasti se dogajajo na apokaliptični kulisi španske državljanske vojne, fašizma in anšlusa. Osrednja tema pa je Dušanovo izogibanje vedno bolj vsiljivemu svetu ‒ njegovo umikanje v zasebnost in vztrajanje, da hoče biti umetnik. Odlašanja in izmikanja je v romanu zelo veliko. Ves čas čakamo, da se bodo karte premešale … pa se kar nekako ne. Vsaj ne zares. Samo skoraj. Kolikor bližje smo koncu, očitneje je, da bo ta skoraj tudi ostal tematsko središče romana. Kraševec svojim likom ni posebno naklonjen. Vsi po vrsti so neprijetni, v kakšnem trenutku celo odurni ljudje. Še najhuje je z Lili in Dušanom. Lili je na začetku romana alkoholičarka, v drugi polovici pa telesno poškodovana in duševno strta. Kadar je opisana, prevladuje nelagodna, odbijajoča fizičnost. Predstavljena je skoraj kot stereotip ženske: samo telo in afekt. Dušan ni na drugi strani nič boljši ‒ njega sta sama duševnost in intelekt. Ta preizrazita duševnost si zamišlja na primer Lilijin umor in se izprijeno veseli njene nesreče in pohabljenosti, ker mu je končno omogočila pisati. V romanu je ustvarjalnost mogoča samo za ceno izrabe in morda celo zlorabe človekovega trpljenja in nesreče ‒ še najbolj lastnega. Ne le za Dušana, to verjamejo tudi drugi liki. Lilijin veliki talent je na primer plačan s ceno otroških in mladostnih bolj ali in manj prostovoljnih srečevanj s spolnostjo. Taka teorija ustvarjalnosti zveni nekoliko zastarelo, zastavlja pa tudi vprašanje, ali vanjo verjamejo le liki ali jo predpostavlja tudi roman. Podobno se moramo vprašati tudi glede Dušanove apolitičnosti ‒ njegovega skrivanja pred svetom in zavračanja pozivov k dejanju. Roman se konča na točki, ki daje slutiti, da to izogibanje ne bo moglo trajati večno. Čas se izteka ‒ vojna je navsezadnje vse bliže. Toda kakšno stališče ima Dan spomina do Dušanove neodločnosti in grozeče odločitve? Na zadnji strani se zdi, da se je roman končal prehitro ‒ še preden bi se usode dovršile, napetosti razrešile, odločitve sprejele. K občutku nezaključenosti doda še to, da se uvodno poglavje ‒ ki je pravzaprav bolj nekakšna magično-realistična črtica ‒ ne stakne z ničemer konkretnim v romanu. Tako na koncu deluje kot še ena nerazrešena skrivnost, o pomenu katere lahko z več ali manj užitka le ugibamo. Avtor bi se utegnil zagovarjati, da je roman takšen, ker je takšno pač življenje, ki mu je želel ostati zvest. Da je bila tudi pištola, ko je nazadnje ustrelila, nabita s slepimi naboji, v rokah pa jo je imela skoraj slepa Lili, ki ni mogla niti dobro nameriti … Strel, ki smo ga nestrpno čakali in pred njim trepetali, je bil strel v prazno. Takšna pa so pravzaprav tudi prizadevanja in življenja likov in se bodo tako tudi še in še nadaljevala … Vendar pa po drugi strani roman Dan spomina ves čas vztraja, da življenje, dejavnost in politika nimajo enakih pravil kot umetnost, kot literatura. Pisatelj ima torej nekoliko bolj omejene izbire in možnosti kot življenje. Ni pomembno samo, ali pištola ustreli ali ne ustreli ‒ pomembno je tudi, da zadene.

Santa María Magdalena Jn 20,1-3.11-18 20,1 El primer día de la semana, de madrugada, cuando todavía estaba oscuro, María Magdalena fue al sepulcro y vio que la piedra había sido sacada. 20,2 Corrió al encuentro de Simón Pedro y del otro discípulo al que Jesús amaba, y les dijo: «Se han llevado del sepulcro al Señor y no sabemos dónde lo han puesto». 20,3 Pedro y el otro discípulo salieron y fueron al sepulcro. 20,11 María se había quedado afuera, llorando junto al sepulcro. Mientras lloraba, se asomó al sepulcro 20,12 y vio a dos ángeles vestidos de blanco, sentados uno a la cabecera y otro a los pies del lugar donde había sido puesto el cuerpo de Jesús. 20,13 Ellos le dijeron: «Mujer, ¿por qué lloras?». María respondió: «Porque se han llevado a mi Señor y no sé dónde lo han puesto». 20,14 Al decir esto se dio vuelta y vio a Jesús, que estaba allí, pero no lo reconoció. 20,15 Jesús le preguntó: «Mujer, ¿por qué lloras? ¿A quién buscas?». Ella, pensando que era el cuidador de la huerta, le respondió: «Señor, si tú lo has llevado, dime dónde lo has puesto y yo iré a buscarlo». 20,16 Jesús le dijo: «¡María!». Ella lo reconoció y le dijo en hebreo: «¡Raboní!», es decir, «¡Maestro!». 20,17 Jesús le dijo: «No me retengas, porque todavía no he subido al Padre. Memoria de santa María Magdalena, que, liberada por el Señor de siete demonios y convertida en su discípula, le siguió hasta el monte Calvario y mereció ser la primera que vio al Señor resucitado en la mañana de Pascua y la que se lo comunicó a los demás discípulos (s. I). «La historia de María de Magdala recuerda a todos una verdad fundamental: discípulo de Cristo es quien, en la experiencia de la debilidad humana, ha tenido la humildad de pedirle ayuda, ha sido curado por él, y le ha seguido de cerca, convirtiéndose en testigo de la potencia de su amor misericordioso, que es más fuerte que el pecado y la muerte» Benedicto XVI, 23 Julio, 2006. Formó parte de los discípulos de Cristo, estuvo presente en el momento de su muerte y, en la madrugada del día de Pascua, tuvo el privilegio de ser la primera en ver al Redentor resucitado de entre los muertos (Mc 16, 9)Fue sobre todo durante el siglo XII cuando su culto se difundió en la Iglesia occidental. La historia de María Magdalena es una de las más conmovedoras del Evangelio y también de las más enigmáticas. Se debate si la mujer que relatan varios pasajes del Evangelio es una o tres mujeres: 1- La pecadora que unge los pies del Señor. (Lc., VII, 37-50). 2- María Magdalena, la posesa liberada por Jesús, que se integró a las mujeres que le asistían (Lc. VIII; Jn XX, 10-18) hasta la crucifixión y resurrección. 3- María de Betania, la hermana de Lázaro y Marta. (Lc., X, 38-42). El santoral litúrgico actual celebra a una sola: María Magdalena utilizando las referencias a su encuentro con Jesús resucitado. La Pecadora que unge los pies del Señor en Galilea San Lucas hace notar que era una "pecadora pública" pero no especifica que haya sido una prostituta. Cristo cenaba en la casa de un fariseo donde la pecadora se presentó y al momento se arrojó al suelo frente al Señor, se echó a llorar y le enjugó los pies con sus cabellos. Después le ungió con el perfume que llevaba en un vaso de alabastro. El fariseo interpretó el silencio y la quietud de Cristo como aprobación del pecado y murmuró en su corazón. Jesús le recriminó por sus pensamientos. Primero le preguntó en forma de parábola cuál de dos deudores debe mayor agradecimiento a su acreedor: aquél a quien se perdona una deuda mayor, o al que se perdona una suma menor. Y descubriendo el sentido de la parábola, le dijo directamente: "¿Ves a esta mujer? Al entrar en tu casa, no me diste agua para lavarme los pies, pero ella me los ha lavado con sus lágrimas y me los ha enjugado con sus cabellos. Tú no me diste el beso de paz; en cambio ella no ha cesado de besarme los pies. Tú no me ungiste la cabeza y ella me ha ungido los pies. Por ello, te digo que se le han perdonado muchos pecados, pues ha amado mucho. En cambio, aquél a quien se perdona menos, ama menos". Y volviéndose a la mujer, le dijo: "Perdonados te son tus pecados. Tu fe te ha salvado. Vete en paz". (Lc. 7) La discípula de Jesús, liberada de siete demonios En el capítulo siguiente, San Lucas, habla de los viajes de Cristo por Galilea, dice que le acompañaban los apóstoles "y algunas mujeres que habían sido curadas de espíritus malignos y enfermedades: María, llamada Magdalena, de la que habían salido siete demonios" (Lucas 8:2). Lucas no especifica ni niega que sea la misma pecadora que unge a Jesús, pero ciertamente se trata de una pecadora y es la misma persona que en Marcos 16:9 es testigo de la resurrección. La hermana de Marta y Lázaro, residentes de Betania Más adelante Lucas narra que, en "cierta población", el Señor fue recibido por Marta y su hermana María. Probablemente las dos hermanas se habían ido a vivir a Betania con su hermano Lázaro, a quien el Señor había resucitado a petición de ellas. Dada la mala reputación que tenía María en Galilea no sería extraño que los tres hermanos se mudaran a Betania (Judea). Marta se ocupaba con afán de atender al Señor y le pide que dijese a su hermana que le ayudase, pues María estaba a los pies de Cristo para escuchar cuanto decía. El Señor respondió: "Marta, Marta, te preocupas por muchas cosas y sólo hay una necesaria. María ha escogido la mejor parte y no le será quitada" (Lc. 10:41). Segunda unción con perfume San Juan en el cap. 12 (cf. Mat., XXVI; Mc, XIV) identifica claramente a María de Betania como la mujer que, en la víspera de la entrada triunfal de Jesús en Jerusalén, le ungió los pies y los enjugó con sus cabellos, de manera que "la casa se llenó del olor del perfume". Esto ocurrió cuando Jesús cenaba con la familia de Lázaro en Betania. San Juan nos dice que Jesús los amaba. ¿Es María de Betania también la protagonista de la primera unción ocurrida en Galilea?. Creemos que sí porque un capítulo antes de que ocurra la unción en Betania, es decir en Jn11,2, San Juan se refiere ya a esta María como "aquella que ungió los pies del Señor" (he aleipsasa). Si es así, María la pecadora se había convertido en contemplativa a los pies del Señor, escogiendo la mejor parte. San Juan pone de relieve el poder transformador de Jesucristo sobre las almas. La que era posesa ahora es contemplativa. Una profunda enseñanza sobre la misión de Jesucristo quien ha venido a perdonar y salvar a los pecadores. Tampoco faltaron criticas en la segunda unción. Judas se escandalizó, no por generosidad con los pobres, sino por avaricia, y aun los otros discípulos interpretaron la conducta de María como un exceso. Pero el Señor reivindicó esta unción como había hecho la anterior: "¡Dejadla en paz! ¿Por qué la molestáis? Buena obra es la que ha hecho conmigo. Porque a los pobres siempre los tendréis con vosotros, pero a mí no me tendréis siempre. Esta mujer ha hecho lo que ha podido, adelantándose a ungir mi cuerpo para la sepultura. En verdad os digo que dondequiera que se predique este evangelio sobre la faz de la tierra, se dirá lo que ella ha hecho por mí". (Mt.26) San Juan Crisóstomo comenta: "Y así ha sucedido en verdad. Por dondequiera que vayáis oiréis alabar a esta mujer . . . Los habitantes de Persia, de la India, . . . de Europa, celebran lo que ella hizo con Cristo Al pié de la Cruz En la hora del Calvario, mientras casi todos abandonan a Jesús, allí estaba María Magdalena. ¡Cuanto se lo agradecería Jesús y la Virgen María! "Junto a la cruz de Jesús estaban su madre y la hermana de su madre, María, mujer de Clopás, y María Magdalena". Juan 19:25 Entre las que siguieron a Jesús en Galilea ahora siguen a Jesús al Calvario "Había allí muchas mujeres mirando desde lejos, aquellas que habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea para servirle. Entre ellas estaban María Magdalena, María la madre de Santiago y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo". Mateo 27:55-56 Sentada en el sepulcro Después que José de Arimatea entierra a Jesús y se fue, María Magdalena quiso quedarse. "Estaban allí María Magdalena y la otra María, sentadas frente al sepulcro". -Mateo 27:61 Es coherente pensar que quién tuvo el amor y la valentía de exponerse para lavarle al Señor los pies con su cabello fuese capaz de estar con el en la cruz y después permanecer amorosamente ante su cuerpo yacente. Da testimonio de Cristo Resucitado María Magdalena, con la otra María fueron las primeras en ir al sepulcro el domingo de Resurrección: "Pasado el sábado, al alborear el primer día de la semana, María Magdalena y la otra María fueron a ver el sepulcro" (Mateo 28:1) Iban con los perfumes para embalsamarlo... Descubrieron así que alguien había apartado la pesada piedra del sepulcro del Señor. "Jesús resucitó en la madrugada, el primer día de la semana, y se apareció primero a María Magdalena, de la que había echado siete demonios". (Marcos 16:9) María Magdalena, la pecadora convertida en contemplativa, fue la primera que vio, saludó y reconoció a Cristo resucitado. Jesús la llamó: "¡María!" Y ella, al volverse, exclamó: "¡Maestro!" Y Jesús añadió: "No me toques, porque todavía no he subido a mi Padre. Pero ve a decir a mis hermanos: Subo a mi Padre y a vuestro Padre, a mi Dios y a vuestro Dios" (Jn 20:17) El hijo de Dios quiso enseñarnos el alcance de su amor y de su poder redentor santificando a una pecadora, adentrándola en su infinita misericordia y enviándola a anunciar la resurrección a los Apóstoles. María Magdalena es gran ejemplo para todos. No se dejó paralizar ni por sus pecados del pasado ni por las opiniones humanas. Creyó de todo corazón en las promesas del Señor y alcanzó la meta. Aquella de quién Jesús dijo que se adelantó para "ungir su cuerpo para la sepultura", no puede ahora ungir Su cadáver porque ha Resucitado. Aquella de quién dijo que "dondequiera que se predique el evangelio se dirá lo que ha hecho por mi" no podía ahora ser excluida del Evangelio porque es la primera persona testigo de su principal evento: La Resurrección del Señor. A la que mucho amó mucho se le perdonó y mucho continuó amando hasta llegar a participar en la gloria del Señor. Tradiciones sobre la vida posterior de María Magdalena La tradición oriental afirma que, después de Pentecostés, María Magdalena fue a vivir a Efeso con la Virgen María y San Juan y que murió ahí. A mediados del siglo VIII, San Wilibaldo visitó en Efeso el santuario de María Magdalena. En el 886 fueron llevadas sus reliquias a Constantinopla. Según la tradición francesa muy difundida en occidente, María Magdalena fue con Lázaro y Marta a evangelizar la Provenza, Francia y pasó los últimos treinta años de su vida en los Alpes Marítimos, en la caverna de La Sainte Baume. Poco antes de su muerte, fue trasladada milagrosamente a la capilla de San Maximino, donde recibió los últimos sacramentos y fue enterrada por el santo. La primera mención del viaje de María Magdalena a la Provenza data del siglo XI, a propósito de las pretendidas reliquias de la santa que se hallaban en la abadía de Vézelay, en Borgoña. Pero la leyenda no tomó su forma definitiva sino hasta el siglo XIII, en la Provenza. A partir de 1279, empezó a afirmarse que las reliquias de Santa María Magdalena se hallaban en Vézelay, en el convento dominicano de Saint-Maximin. Todavía en la actualidad es muy popular la peregrinación a dicho convento y a la Sainte Baume. Pero las investigaciones modernas, especialmente las que llevó a cabo Mons. Duchesne, han demostrado que no se pueden considerar como auténticos ni las reliquias, ni el viaje de los amigos del Señor a Marsella. Así pues, a pesar de los clamores de la tradición local francesa, hay que confesar que se trata de una fábula. Volvamos pues al Evangelio. La pecadora fue perdonada por Jesús. My guest is Kurt Johnson Co-author of The Moon Tavern, A Culinary Love Story With Recipes. It is a fiction book that is available on your bookshelf now. Welcome to the podcast, Kurt.Kurt Johnson [00:00:22]:Hi, thanks for having me.Stephanie [00:00:24]:Thanks for having us. The idea that we should work on a book together. I am, as many of you listening know, a cookbook writer and my husband is a fiction writer. And somewhere along the way, we decided that maybe it would be good to collaborate together. Kurt, was it you or me that had the idea first? I think it was you.Kurt Johnson [00:00:42]:Yeah, probably. I was kind of done with my past book writing about Las Vegas and looking for something different. And we'd been traveling a lot, so going to Croatia, going to Italy, going out west, going to Turkey. So I wanted to incorporate travel with a novel, and I also wanted to incorporate food. And so I thought this would be a lot of fun. Since we're traveling together, we have those shared experiences and you have the food experience and the food writing experience. So I thought it'd be a fun collaboration. And I've always liked the idea of love stories.Kurt Johnson [00:01:18]:Even my thriller books in Las Vegas had kind of a love story element. And it adds a dimension to a novel that, I don't know, makes it cohesive, makes it pull together in an emotional arc that's kind of fulfilling in the end.Stephanie [00:01:33]:Do you think you're a romantic at heart, or what is it about romances that are fun to write for you?Kurt Johnson [00:01:39]:Maybe I'm a romance at heart. I may be more stoic than that, though. I just. I like the idea of seeing people get together, seeing people enjoy the same interests and finding people that can fall in love. Of course, that's always the fun part. The hard part is once you get married and move on from there and have to deal with kids and daily life and work and all the other things that go with living life. And that's not that much fun to write.Stephanie [00:02:07]:Yeah, exactly. We as a couple, I think I can speak for me and you maybe on this one. We've always had great experiences traveling. We are good traveling companions. We like the spirit of adventure. Did you know that Croatia would be the spot for the first fiction endeavor?Kurt Johnson [00:02:24]:Yeah, that was a given since we'd been there five times and four times running a sailboat and visiting the islands. And as you know, Stephanie, I'm just enamored with those islands, I think they're so beautiful. And there was one island we discovered out there, Lastovo, which is the furthest island out. So a lot of the sailors and tourists just never get there. They stay closer to shore. So, you know, going out there the first time, this beautiful bay of Zachlopedia, where, you know, it's a, it's a protective cove which is beautiful turquoise water. And then taking the dinghy in, and then you walk up this path, I think it's about a two mile hike. And then you go over this ridge and this 16th, 15th century town opens up.Kurt Johnson [00:03:10]:You know, at one point maybe it had 10,000 residents. And, and it, it, when we first saw it, I don't know, 10, 15 years ago, it was abandoned. So it was a ghost town of 15th century buildings and churches and apartments in this beautiful valley of lush green foliage. So that's very picturesque. We had an incredible meal there of just simple anchovies and blitfa. And for you, for you people out there that don't know, blitfa is ubiquitous in Croatia. And it's, it's just spring potatoes with Swiss chard, but it's served with everything.Stephanie [00:03:52]:It is served with everything. And they sometimes have spinach, sometimes have like another type of green, but it's sort of like the potatoes are cooked till they're pretty soft, and then it's kind of mashed in a little bit. So it's not fully a mashed potato and it's not fully a roasted potato. It's sort of a combination of both. But it is good.Kurt Johnson [00:04:12]:Yeah, so, yeah, that's so, you know, it seemed such an exotic place, the island of Lastovo in Croatia, that it was a natural to place it there.Stephanie [00:04:23]:Can you tell a little bit of just an introduction of the story, like what people will find when they crack open the book?Kurt Johnson [00:04:30]:Sure. It's about Vesna, who is. Has a breakup with her live in boyfriend, and they'd had a restaurant. She was a chef, a cookbook authority, and had a restaurant, not unlike my dear wife Stephanie. And she has a breakup and she leaves Minneapolis to go to Croatia to uncover her. Her heritage. She had been adopted from Croatia, specifically Dubrovnik, when her parents died in the Serb bombing of Dubrovnik in 1991. So she was adopted out of there and raised in Minnesota.Kurt Johnson [00:05:05]:So then she goes to Croatia and rediscovers her dark family secrets and meets Dinko Radek, who is a winery owner, and, you know, romance ensues. But she has a life still back in Minneapolis that she has to go back to and resolve.Stephanie [00:05:24]:When we talked about putting this first concept together, you know, I see the world through food. Like, literally everything in sort of my life is framed by a meal, an experience, just the way that I see the world. It's always around food, celebrations. And so did you know that that would work for this Croatia book? Because I didn't. When you first brought it up, I was like, I can't be a Croatian grandma here. And writing recipes about what at the time I perceived as, like, dumplings.Kurt Johnson [00:05:53]:Yeah, I wasn't sure either, frankly. You know, so each chapter, there's 25 chapters, and each chapter in it has a description of cooking. And it's all Croatia cooking, Croatia recipes. You know, all food we at over the years where we were there. And then the idea of tagging on recipes was just kind of bringing it home. Like, here's the Croatia experience. Now here's how Stephanie would bring that back to the real world, which is here in the United States.Stephanie [00:06:21]:We have talked about doing a series of books. What is it about this genre that you think lends itself to other titles and other characters?Kurt Johnson [00:06:29]:Well, you know, it's an adventure book on one level, and there's always new places to visit. So the next book is based in Panza, Italy, where we've been a couple times. And it's this beautiful island off the coast of Italy in the Mediterranean. And, you know, Italian food. You go to Italy and what you remember is the pizza in Naples or the. The pasta in Rome and. And the busteca up in the hills. So, you know, a way to experience a place is.Kurt Johnson [00:07:04]:Is through food. And I like writing about new settings. You know, it. It's not as interesting writing about Minnesota,Stephanie [00:07:11]:but you've written a lot about Las Vegas. You've had how many books about Las Vegas? Three.Kurt Johnson [00:07:16]:Yeah, three. You know, two of the. Of kind of a thriller in. Two thrillers in a series, and then a book about RVing that ends up in. In Las Vegas. And Las Vegas is a interesting place, and I lived there for five years running nightclubs and restaurants. And so two of the books are Underbelly of Las Vegas, which I was a part of in the nightclub scene back in the late 80s. So that's just flat out fun to write about.Kurt Johnson [00:07:39]:And Las Vegas is such a weirdo place that it's fun to bring that to life.Stephanie [00:07:45]:It's interesting to hear you talk about that. The way you choose your stories is about place, because the first book, the Barrens, that you wrote with our Daughter Ellie, inspired by her experiences as a canoe camper in the tundra. That's also based in Place, too. Place is sort of what starts you on these journeys. It seems like, yeah, you know something,Kurt Johnson [00:08:07]:you threw me a curveball because I never really thought about it. But you're exactly right.Stephanie [00:08:12]:All.Kurt Johnson [00:08:12]:All these books start off with a setting, with a place, and then, you know, the plots revolve around. Around that. And there's just so many. So many different. There's a finite number of, really, plots you can choose from. It's kind of like a piano keyboard has all the. The notes that you want to make up a. A music piece the same way with plot structures.Kurt Johnson [00:08:34]:And so to take it to the next level, you really have to search out characters, and the characters are in a setting, so those two are inexplicably, Inextricably. Inextricably linked. Yeah, exactly. So, you know, the two go hand in hand. So character and place really can set a novel apart.Stephanie [00:08:59]:Can you think of other books that you've written or. Excuse me. No, not that you've written, that you've read. Where Place sort of started you off on this adventure?Kurt Johnson [00:09:07]:Yeah, probably. I really love Beautiful Ruins.Stephanie [00:09:11]:Jess Walters.Kurt Johnson [00:09:13]:Walters, yeah. And that starts off in Italy, kind of near Cinque de Terre. And it's kind of the poor version of Cinque de Terre, where the tourists don't go. And it was such a fascinating story. And then they bring that all back to Hollywood in America, and it just works so well. But what really captures your imagination is the description of this little seaside community. Before the whole plot takes over, IStephanie [00:09:41]:kind of think about that book. The Embarrassment of Mangoes.Kurt Johnson [00:09:44]:Yeah.Stephanie [00:09:44]:When you and I first started sailing and going on these adventures, we read that book. It was about a couple that buys a boat and sails through the Caribbean, and she is discovering spices and fruits and vegetables and things that she's never eaten before. And I just loved that book. It was really what got me into sailing and thinking about how to make that our life and whether or not, you know, we could buy a boat and do that. And that boat really had a huge setting of place. Can you think of, like. I don't know. When I think of other books, there's very few books that I think about character first.Stephanie [00:10:19]:I usually always think about the place. Maybe that's just something.Kurt Johnson [00:10:22]:Or the plot, too. Yeah, they're all just linked together. And you don't think about. Well, you were saying you don't think about character as much.Stephanie [00:10:31]:Not really.Kurt Johnson [00:10:32]:Yeah, it's funny. I think, you know, the best books people say are character driven, but they're inexplicable. What's the word again?Stephanie [00:10:41]:Inextricably.Kurt Johnson [00:10:43]:Inextricably. Trouble with that. Linked. So, you know, you pick a place and you pick a plot and then you build these characters. The characters have to build around that plot and so they kind of naturally flow. And, and I, I think they, if they're well written and honest, you shouldn't think of them. You know, they're interesting characters and you'll say, you know, this is Rabbit and the Rabbit series. And you'll know, but you won't say, oh, that's just a great character.Kurt Johnson [00:11:10]:I, I, I don't know that I certainly, you know, I'm probably deep into it and I look at the craft a lot so I can see where somebody has really spent some time to develop an honest character or where, you know, the narrative voice comes through and, and a character comes to life through this first person narrative voice. So I see that a lot moreStephanie [00:11:30]:people have a real, like they can't believe you can write a book. Like the idea of the literal act of sitting down and writing and how that works. People fantasize about writing it, but then very few people do. What was it that got you over the hump from thinking about writing it to actually sitting down and doing it?Kurt Johnson [00:11:47]:Well, selling our business and all of a sudden being able to free up time. Because for me, novel writing and I think was it Chrisham talked about, you know, writing at 5 in the morning before he goes to work at 7. I just couldn't do that. You know, I just, I'm very focused on one thing and, and so I needed to free up my time from work in order to get going. And then it was, can you put together, you know, a thousand or fifteen hundred words every day so that it links up into a novel and have that, not only that, that discipline, but also have the creative juices to produce scenes almost every day because, you know, like a, a good novel is created from 50 scenes. So I went from, you know, writing a memoir that I probably won't publish just to see if I can get, you know, a thousand words every day and put this together to then writing Las Vegas turnaround. And there I, I, I really just copied a lot of plot structures that I saw that I liked. And so it was easier for me to set up main characters, set up tertiary characters, subplots, because I had a blueprint from somebody else.Kurt Johnson [00:12:56]:And then, and then once, you know, you Keep writing. You get muscle memory for it and it becomes more, more natural and actually more fun because it becomes more organic. You'll follow characters through a town and they'll meet somebody and all of a sudden that person becomes a character in their universe and they say something and all of a sudden that takes off and you have to follow it. Now, you know, the woman's gonna fall in love with a guy at the end. But getting there is the fun part. And now I can do that a lot more organically.Stephanie [00:13:27]:If you are talking to any aspiring novel writers, what kind of advice do you have for them to get started?Kurt Johnson [00:13:34]:Well, you know, you gotta lower your expectations just because publishing is so hard, you know.Stephanie [00:13:39]:Can you elaborate on that?Kurt Johnson [00:13:41]:Well, you know, there's maybe two or three or 400 agents, most of them in New York City and they're all trying to make a buck. And it's hard to make a buck off a debut writer. It helps if you're MFA and you're writing in a genre because, you know, let's say 70% of the books are read by women and 70% of those are romances. And then men, the other 30%, probably 80% of what they read are, you know, thrillers or mysteries. So if you can pick a genre, that always helps. But yeah, it, you have to be more thoughtful about it. And I think, I think so many first time writers, you know, once they get the discipline and put, put the, the words on a page, they write that first personal novel, you know, and I wrote my memoir and it's, it's really 90% of those, they, you know, people have the, they aspire for the great American novel and it's too personal, it's too close to home. They can't break out from the reality of their lives to have fun with the plot and make things happen.Kurt Johnson [00:14:45]:So a lot of times these books, nothing happens. They're deeply emotional books where nothing happens and they're, they're excruciatingly boring. So you gotta get past that phase and then you gotta look at it as a, as a craft. And, you know, a big chunk of it's art, of course, whatever you wanna call that, you know, shedding light on the human experience. But a big chunk is craft. And I don't think you can get to the craft for most people in that first book. So you gotta keep writing, you know, and realize that the first couple books may not get published. So, you know, the barons got published.Kurt Johnson [00:15:21]:That was one, two, that was my third, fourth book, you know, and the, and two, the, the first three, two of them were duds that will never be published.Stephanie [00:15:31]:Yeah. Yeah. All right, well, it's good to chat with you about the book. We are in the marketing process of the book. I feel like books come in three waves. One is the idea that you're thinking about it. The second, the actual writing of it. And then the third is actual the marketing of it.Stephanie [00:15:48]:What do you think's the hardest part?Kurt Johnson [00:15:49]:Well, I mean, it's. The hardest part's finding an agent and finding a publisher. Then if you self publish, the hardest part is marketing. And at least it is for me because writing is so natural and fun for me. But I think for most people, you know, the writing's a hard part. And, and you know, like the Minnesota writer o', Brien, he hates writing, so he forces himself. Tim o'. Brien.Kurt Johnson [00:16:12]:So he forces himself to get those books out there. So probably that's the hardest part for him.Stephanie [00:16:17]:We had, I had a cookbook, two cookbooks out and I had a publisher, but they didn't publish this book because it was a fiction book. I think some people just assume like, oh, well, they've already had books out, but we self published this book. Why did we make that decision from your standpoint?Kurt Johnson [00:16:33]:Well, we couldn't get an A list agent or a New York publisher. There's just not, it comes off as almost a debut book and it's hard for them to make any money. So if you can't get an A lister, then you're, you know, stuck with boutique publishing companies and others and, and they just don't support the marketing of your book. And I've self published books in the past, so I know how to do it. I know how to put a professional product out there. And, and we can, you know, both of us are marketers and, and Stephanie has a large platform, so we can do a lot of our own marketing or, or outsource it, you know, but still we retain most of the profits. So when we do the marketing, we can reinvested or keep those profits.Stephanie [00:17:17]:Yeah, I, when you say profits, it sounds like there's a lot there. I'd like to, I mean, I mean,Kurt Johnson [00:17:22]:maybe, maybe we broke it even at this point, but then now we're looking at a marketing PR firm that's going to set us back another $5,000. But you know, if, if these books succeed and somebody makes a lot of money, it's the, it's the third, you know, book that's going to put them over the top. It's not the first.Stephanie [00:17:40]:I have this idea too that we're going to write these books and then sooner or later someone's going to turn them into a T series because it's going to be like the White Lotus where each season is a different location and a different cast of characters, but sort of the general premise is sort of the same.Kurt Johnson [00:17:56]:I hope so. You know, I hope an A list agent comes along and, and frees us from our servitude or whatever. And, but, and yeah, you know, there's, there's plenty of stories of self published authors that, that get deals or even boutique. Boutique authors that get deals. So you know, we can dream.Stephanie [00:18:16]:One thing that I'd like the listener to hear is what their part is in this because we've. I was leaving the coffee shop today. We're in Ely. That is the vacation backgrounds. But.Kurt Johnson [00:18:25]:Right.Stephanie [00:18:25]:I was leaving the coffee shop today and a woman stopped me and said, Stephanie, I had the opportunity to read the Moon Tavern. It's so good. I loved it so much. And she's telling me about it and telling her friend. And I have that experience a lot where people have really, really enjoyed this book. And I just want the listener to know that leaving reviews on Goodreads or Amazon or Barnes and Noble or wherever you bought the book or if you can' find a book, asking for it at your local bookseller. Cause they can always order it when you're self published. The more buzz you can create about these books, the better chance that someone will hear about it, someone will buy it and eventually a publisher, if they hear about a book and they like it, then they may pick it up.Stephanie [00:19:03]:So I think if you like what you're reading and you want to see more of this type of work in the world and books that you like, that's something that you can do to help us out.Kurt Johnson [00:19:13]:Yes, a 5 on Amazon or top rating on any other Goodreads is good too. It is a fiction book that is available on your bookshelf now. Welcome to the podcast, Kurt.Kurt Johnson [00:00:22]:Hi, thanks for having me.Stephanie [00:00:24]:Thanks for having us. The idea that we should work on a book together. I am, as many of you listening know, a cookbook writer and my husband is a fiction writer. And somewhere along the way, we decided that maybe it would be good to collaborate together. Kurt, was it you or me that had the idea first? I think it was you.Kurt Johnson [00:00:42]:Yeah, probably. I was kind of done with my past book writing about Las Vegas and looking for something different. And we'd been traveling a lot, so going to Croatia, going to Italy, going out west, going to Turkey. So I wanted to incorporate travel with a novel, and I also wanted to incorporate food. And so I thought this would be a lot of fun. Since we're traveling together, we have those shared experiences and you have the food experience and the food writing experience. So I thought it'd be a fun collaboration. And I've always liked the idea of love stories.Kurt Johnson [00:01:18]:Even my thriller books in Las Vegas had kind of a love story element. And it adds a dimension to a novel that, I don't know, makes it cohesive, makes it pull together in an emotional arc that's kind of fulfilling in the end.Stephanie [00:01:33]:Do you think you're a romantic at heart, or what is it about romances that are fun to write for you?Kurt Johnson [00:01:39]:Maybe I'm a romance at heart. I may be more stoic than that, though. I just. I like the idea of seeing people get together, seeing people enjoy the same interests and finding people that can fall in love. Of course, that's always the fun part. The hard part is once you get married and move on from there and have to deal with kids and daily life and work and all the other things that go with living life. And that's not that much fun to write.Stephanie [00:02:07]:Yeah, exactly. We as a couple, I think I can speak for me and you maybe on this one. We've always had great experiences traveling. We are good traveling companions. We like the spirit of adventure. Did you know that Croatia would be the spot for the first fiction endeavor?Kurt Johnson [00:02:24]:Yeah, that was a given since we'd been there five times and four times running a sailboat and visiting the islands. And as you know, Stephanie, I'm just enamored with those islands, I think they're so beautiful. And there was one island we discovered out there, Lastovo, which is the furthest island out. So a lot of the sailors and tourists just never get there. They stay closer to shore. So, you know, going out there the first time, this beautiful bay of Zachlopedia, where, you know, it's a, it's a protective cove which is beautiful turquoise water. And then taking the dinghy in, and then you walk up this path, I think it's about a two mile hike. And then you go over this ridge and this 16th, 15th century town opens up.Kurt Johnson [00:03:10]:You know, at one point maybe it had 10,000 residents. And, and it, it, when we first saw it, I don't know, 10, 15 years ago, it was abandoned. So it was a ghost town of 15th century buildings and churches and apartments in this beautiful valley of lush green foliage. So that's very picturesque. We had an incredible meal there of just simple anchovies and blitfa. And for you, for you people out there that don't know, blitfa is ubiquitous in Croatia. And it's, it's just spring potatoes with Swiss chard, but it's served with everything.Stephanie [00:03:52]:It is served with everything. And they sometimes have spinach, sometimes have like another type of green, but it's sort of like the potatoes are cooked till they're pretty soft, and then it's kind of mashed in a little bit. So it's not fully a mashed potato and it's not fully a roasted potato. It's sort of a combination of both. But it is good.Kurt Johnson [00:04:12]:Yeah, so, yeah, that's so, you know, it seemed such an exotic place, the island of Lastovo in Croatia, that it was a natural to place it there.Stephanie [00:04:23]:Can you tell a little bit of just an introduction of the story, like what people will find when they crack open the book?Kurt Johnson [00:04:30]:Sure. It's about Vesna, who is. Has a breakup with her live in boyfriend, and they'd had a restaurant. She was a chef, a cookbook authority, and had a restaurant, not unlike my dear wife Stephanie. And she has a breakup and she leaves Minneapolis to go to Croatia to uncover her. Her heritage. She had been adopted from Croatia, specifically Dubrovnik, when her parents died in the Serb bombing of Dubrovnik in 1991. So she was adopted out of there and raised in Minnesota.Kurt Johnson [00:05:05]:So then she goes to Croatia and rediscovers her dark family secrets and meets Dinko Radek, who is a winery owner, and, you know, romance ensues. But she has a life still back in Minneapolis that she has to go back to and resolve.Stephanie [00:05:24]:When we talked about putting this first concept together, you know, I see the world through food. Like, literally everything in sort of my life is framed by a meal, an experience, just the way that I see the world. It's always around food, celebrations. And so did you know that that would work for this Croatia book? Because I didn't. When you first brought it up, I was like, I can't be a Croatian grandma here. And writing recipes about what at the time I perceived as, like, dumplings.Kurt Johnson [00:05:53]:Yeah, I wasn't sure either, frankly. You know, so each chapter, there's 25 chapters, and each chapter in it has a description of cooking. And it's all Croatia cooking, Croatia recipes. You know, all food we at over the years where we were there. And then the idea of tagging on recipes was just kind of bringing it home. Like, here's the Croatia experience. Now here's how Stephanie would bring that back to the real world, which is here in the United States.Stephanie [00:06:21]:We have talked about doing a series of books. What is it about this genre that you think lends itself to other titles and other characters?Kurt Johnson [00:06:29]:Well, you know, it's an adventure book on one level, and there's always new places to visit. So the next book is based in Panza, Italy, where we've been a couple times. And it's this beautiful island off the coast of Italy in the Mediterranean. And, you know, Italian food. You go to Italy and what you remember is the pizza in Naples or the. The pasta in Rome and. And the busteca up in the hills. So, you know, a way to experience a place is.Kurt Johnson [00:07:04]:Is through food. And I like writing about new settings. You know, it. It's not as interesting writing about Minnesota,Stephanie [00:07:11]:but you've written a lot about Las Vegas. You've had how many books about Las Vegas? Three.Kurt Johnson [00:07:16]:Yeah, three. You know, two of the. Of kind of a thriller in. Two thrillers in a series, and then a book about RVing that ends up in. In Las Vegas. And Las Vegas is a interesting place, and I lived there for five years running nightclubs and restaurants. And so two of the books are Underbelly of Las Vegas, which I was a part of in the nightclub scene back in the late 80s. So that's just flat out fun to write about.Kurt Johnson [00:07:39]:And Las Vegas is such a weirdo place that it's fun to bring that to life.Stephanie [00:07:45]:It's interesting to hear you talk about that. The way you choose your stories is about place, because the first book, the Barrens, that you wrote with our Daughter Ellie, inspired by her experiences as a canoe camper in the tundra. That's also based in Place, too. Place is sort of what starts you on these journeys. It seems like, yeah, you know something,Kurt Johnson [00:08:07]:you threw me a curveball because I never really thought about it. But you're exactly right.Stephanie [00:08:12]:All.Kurt Johnson [00:08:12]:All these books start off with a setting, with a place, and then, you know, the plots revolve around. Around that. And there's just so many. So many different. There's a finite number of, really, plots you can choose from. It's kind of like a piano keyboard has all the. The notes that you want to make up a. A music piece the same way with plot structures.Kurt Johnson [00:08:34]:And so to take it to the next level, you really have to search out characters, and the characters are in a setting, so those two are inexplicably, Inextricably. Inextricably linked. Yeah, exactly. So, you know, the two go hand in hand. So character and place really can set a novel apart.Stephanie [00:08:59]:Can you think of other books that you've written or. Excuse me. No, not that you've written, that you've read. Where Place sort of started you off on this adventure?Kurt Johnson [00:09:07]:Yeah, probably. I really love Beautiful Ruins.Stephanie [00:09:11]:Jess Walters.Kurt Johnson [00:09:13]:Walters, yeah. And that starts off in Italy, kind of near Cinque de Terre. And it's kind of the poor version of Cinque de Terre, where the tourists don't go. And it was such a fascinating story. And then they bring that all back to Hollywood in America, and it just works so well. But what really captures your imagination is the description of this little seaside community. Before the whole plot takes over, IStephanie [00:09:41]:kind of think about that book. The Embarrassment of Mangoes.Kurt Johnson [00:09:44]:Yeah.Stephanie [00:09:44]:When you and I first started sailing and going on these adventures, we read that book. It was about a couple that buys a boat and sails through the Caribbean, and she is discovering spices and fruits and vegetables and things that she's never eaten before. And I just loved that book. It was really what got me into sailing and thinking about how to make that our life and whether or not, you know, we could buy a boat and do that. And that boat really had a huge setting of place. Can you think of, like. I don't know. When I think of other books, there's very few books that I think about character first.Stephanie [00:10:19]:I usually always think about the place. Maybe that's just something.Kurt Johnson [00:10:22]:Or the plot, too. Yeah, they're all just linked together. And you don't think about. Well, you were saying you don't think about character as much.Stephanie [00:10:31]:Not really.Kurt Johnson [00:10:32]:Yeah, it's funny. I think, you know, the best books people say are character driven, but they're inexplicable. What's the word again?Stephanie [00:10:41]:Inextricably.Kurt Johnson [00:10:43]:Inextricably. Trouble with that. Linked. So, you know, you pick a place and you pick a plot and then you build these characters. The characters have to build around that plot and so they kind of naturally flow. And, and I, I think they, if they're well written and honest, you shouldn't think of them. You know, they're interesting characters and you'll say, you know, this is Rabbit and the Rabbit series. And you'll know, but you won't say, oh, that's just a great character.Kurt Johnson [00:11:10]:I, I, I don't know that I certainly, you know, I'm probably deep into it and I look at the craft a lot so I can see where somebody has really spent some time to develop an honest character or where, you know, the narrative voice comes through and, and a character comes to life through this first person narrative voice. So I see that a lot moreStephanie [00:11:30]:people have a real, like they can't believe you can write a book. Like the idea of the literal act of sitting down and writing and how that works. People fantasize about writing it, but then very few people do. What was it that got you over the hump from thinking about writing it to actually sitting down and doing it?Kurt Johnson [00:11:47]:Well, selling our business and all of a sudden being able to free up time. Because for me, novel writing and I think was it Chrisham talked about, you know, writing at 5 in the morning before he goes to work at 7. I just couldn't do that. You know, I just, I'm very focused on one thing and, and so I needed to free up my time from work in order to get going. And then it was, can you put together, you know, a thousand or fifteen hundred words every day so that it links up into a novel and have that, not only that, that discipline, but also have the creative juices to produce scenes almost every day because, you know, like a, a good novel is created from 50 scenes. So I went from, you know, writing a memoir that I probably won't publish just to see if I can get, you know, a thousand words every day and put this together to then writing Las Vegas turnaround. And there I, I, I really just copied a lot of plot structures that I saw that I liked. And so it was easier for me to set up main characters, set up tertiary characters, subplots, because I had a blueprint from somebody else.Kurt Johnson [00:12:56]:And then, and then once, you know, you Keep writing. You get muscle memory for it and it becomes more, more natural and actually more fun because it becomes more organic. You'll follow characters through a town and they'll meet somebody and all of a sudden that person becomes a character in their universe and they say something and all of a sudden that takes off and you have to follow it. Now, you know, the woman's gonna fall in love with a guy at the end. But getting there is the fun part. And now I can do that a lot more organically.Stephanie [00:13:27]:If you are talking to any aspiring novel writers, what kind of advice do you have for them to get started?Kurt Johnson [00:13:34]:Well, you know, you gotta lower your expectations just because publishing is so hard, you know.Stephanie [00:13:39]:Can you elaborate on that?Kurt Johnson [00:13:41]:Well, you know, there's maybe two or three or 400 agents, most of them in New York City and they're all trying to make a buck. And it's hard to make a buck off a debut writer. It helps if you're MFA and you're writing in a genre because, you know, let's say 70% of the books are read by women and 70% of those are romances. And then men, the other 30%, probably 80% of what they read are, you know, thrillers or mysteries. So if you can pick a genre, that always helps. But yeah, it, you have to be more thoughtful about it. And I think, I think so many first time writers, you know, once they get the discipline and put, put the, the words on a page, they write that first personal novel, you know, and I wrote my memoir and it's, it's really 90% of those, they, you know, people have the, they aspire for the great American novel and it's too personal, it's too close to home. They can't break out from the reality of their lives to have fun with the plot and make things happen.Kurt Johnson [00:14:45]:So a lot of times these books, nothing happens. They're deeply emotional books where nothing happens and they're, they're excruciatingly boring. So you gotta get past that phase and then you gotta look at it as a, as a craft. And, you know, a big chunk of it's art, of course, whatever you wanna call that, you know, shedding light on the human experience. But a big chunk is craft. And I don't think you can get to the craft for most people in that first book. So you gotta keep writing, you know, and realize that the first couple books may not get published. So, you know, the barons got published.Kurt Johnson [00:15:21]:That was one, two, that was my third, fourth book, you know, and the, and two, the, the first three, two of them were duds that will never be published.Stephanie [00:15:31]:Yeah. Yeah. All right, well, it's good to chat with you about the book. We are in the marketing process of the book. I feel like books come in three waves. One is the idea that you're thinking about it. The second, the actual writing of it. And then the third is actual the marketing of it.Stephanie [00:15:48]:What do you think's the hardest part?Kurt Johnson [00:15:49]:Well, I mean, it's. The hardest part's finding an agent and finding a publisher. Then if you self publish, the hardest part is marketing. And at least it is for me because writing is so natural and fun for me. But I think for most people, you know, the writing's a hard part. And, and you know, like the Minnesota writer o', Brien, he hates writing, so he forces himself. Tim o'. Brien.Kurt Johnson [00:16:12]:So he forces himself to get those books out there. So probably that's the hardest part for him.Stephanie [00:16:17]:We had, I had a cookbook, two cookbooks out and I had a publisher, but they didn't publish this book because it was a fiction book. I think some people just assume like, oh, well, they've already had books out, but we self published this book. Why did we make that decision from your standpoint?Kurt Johnson [00:16:33]:Well, we couldn't get an A list agent or a New York publisher. There's just not, it comes off as almost a debut book and it's hard for them to make any money. So if you can't get an A lister, then you're, you know, stuck with boutique publishing companies and others and, and they just don't support the marketing of your book. And I've self published books in the past, so I know how to do it. I know how to put a professional product out there. And, and we can, you know, both of us are marketers and, and Stephanie has a large platform, so we can do a lot of our own marketing or, or outsource it, you know, but still we retain most of the profits. So when we do the marketing, we can reinvested or keep those profits.Stephanie [00:17:17]:Yeah, I, when you say profits, it sounds like there's a lot there. I'd like to, I mean, I mean,Kurt Johnson [00:17:22]:maybe, maybe we broke it even at this point, but then now we're looking at a marketing PR firm that's going to set us back another $5,000. But you know, if, if these books succeed and somebody makes a lot of money, it's the, it's the third, you know, book that's going to put them over the top. It's not the first.Stephanie [00:17:40]:I have this idea too that we're going to write these books and then sooner or later someone's going to turn them into a T series because it's going to be like the White Lotus where each season is a different location and a different cast of characters, but sort of the general premise is sort of the same.Kurt Johnson [00:17:56]:I hope so. You know, I hope an A list agent comes along and, and frees us from our servitude or whatever. And, but, and yeah, you know, there's, there's plenty of stories of self published authors that, that get deals or even boutique. Boutique authors that get deals. So you know, we can dream.Stephanie [00:18:16]:One thing that I'd like the listener to hear is what their part is in this because we've. I was leaving the coffee shop today. We're in Ely. That is the vacation backgrounds. But.Kurt Johnson [00:18:25]:Right.Stephanie [00:18:25]:I was leaving the coffee shop today and a woman stopped me and said, Stephanie, I had the opportunity to read the Moon Tavern. It's so good. I loved it so much. And she's telling me about it and telling her friend. And I have that experience a lot where people have really, really enjoyed this book. And I just want the listener to know that leaving reviews on Goodreads or Amazon or Barnes and Noble or wherever you bought the book or if you can' find a book, asking for it at your local bookseller. Cause they can always order it when you're self published. Es parte de la vida saber que hay temporadas y temporadas. Hoy es importante que mires en tu corazón cosas que debes soltar y cosas que debes dejar, elementos que debes ver para tu vivir y ver qué es parte de tu deber para vivir. Jesús tenía un círculo de amigos, al menos 72, a quienes llamó discípulos y a quienes además mandó a predicar y curar. Pero después tenía otro circulo, de 12, a quienes llamó apóstoles, seleccionados por Él mismo, y después un “círculo íntimo” llamado Pedro, Santiago y Juan. Incluso después tenía un segundo círculo. Y si Jesús tenía estos círculos de amistades distintos, ¿que nos sugiere a nosotros?. Capaz que te tenga que ayudar a vos el tema del vínculo y dejar de estar renegando por los celos que te presenten.2) Despertaron: Conocí el caso de un muchacho fue a trabajar a una familia, cortaba el césped y le daban un dinero por esa tarea. Siempre se lo veía sucio y un poco descuidado. Hasta que la familia le preguntó dónde vivía y dijo que no tenía dónde ir. Cuando se enteraron de que era un muchacho de la calle y que sobrevivía con el dinero que hacía con el trabajo de cortar el césped, le dieron un espacio en la casa. Lo curioso era que siempre tenía el bolso o la maleta armado por si tenía que irse. Aunque se sentía parte de la familia, nunca desempacaba. Claro, lo habían rechazado tantas veces en la vida, que había aprendido a ser cauteloso, porque tenía miedo de que en cualquier momento lo corrieran. Él estaba en la casa, pero no en el “hogar”. Estaba bajo el techo, pero no bajo la promesa. Estaba con la familia, pero no se sentía un miembro de la misma. Por eso me dirijo a vos, querido amigo, querida amiga, que hace años no podés desempacar, para los que están en una iglesia, pero no se sienten parte. Para los que sirven, pero nunca se sintieron parte, porque está eso de:“¿y si Dios cambia de idea”? Pero no, te lo aseguro que no, porque yo también me sentí fuera o corrido, pero volvimos, porque lo que te quiero recordar es que Jesús te sigue mostrando que está. Por eso me pronuncio “un legalista en recuperación” porque comprobé que no es que Dios te ama si haces esto o aquello, si te vestís de esta manera o de la otra; si rezas el rosario de esta manera o de la otra.. Dios te ama y acompaña a pesar de no haber hecho esto o aquello.3) Decían: Una cosa me ayudó a cambiar el pensamiento, porque antes vivía renegando, enojoso de cosas que me pasaban. Mi guía espiritual me ayudó con lo que llamó “las tres gracias”. No importa lo que pase, por ejemplo, que se te pinche la llanta camino a los cerros. Lo que tienes que hacer antes de lamentarte, renegar o enojarte, es pensar en tres gracias que tengan que ver con lo que te ha sucedido. Por ejemplo, gracias a Dios que tengo batería para llamar para que me ayuden, gracias a Dios que tengo una llanta de repuesto y gracias a Dios que está cerca la casa de doña Graciela, donde pueden darme una ayudita si se pone difícil el cambiar la rueda. Eso ayuda a que la mente y el corazón no lo puedan ver igual, y no estés siempre enojado. O, por ejemplo, te dejó tu pareja: gracias a Dios voy a tener más tiempo, gracias a Dios que tengo salud y gracias a Dios que puedo vivir sin depender. Puede ser cualquier cosa, incluso una pérdida familiar: gracias a Dios que lo tengo en el recuerdo, siempre con su sonrisa y sus chistes; gracias a Dios que lo he vivido en profundidad, y hemos podido compartir los últimos años con mucha alegría y gracias a Dios por haber sacado una enseñanza de la vida de él y cosas que he aprendido de él. ¿Ves? Pred začetkom je bil naš gost krasoslovec prof.dr. Franci Gabrovšek z inštituta, poleg njegovega kolega dr. Mitje Prelovška (tudi z inštituta) odgovoren za organizacijo in izpeljavo tokratnega, zdaj že kar tradicionalnega večdnevnega simpozija in hkrati šole. Enkrat na leto le-ta omogoča snidenje raziskovalcev kraškega podzemlja iz vsega sveta (letos 120 sodelujočih), tako tudi študentov, ki si na ta način pridobivajo potrebne raziskovalne izkušnje iz vsakokratne teme. In zakaj letošnja tema? Ogljik, ki v krasu kroži med organsko snovjo, zrakom, vodo in karbonatno kamnino, igra osrednjo vlogo pri raztapljanju in izločanju karbonatov. Tokrat krasoslovci skušajo dopolniti spoznanja o tem, kako se ogljikove poti v kraških masivih začenjajo, končujejo in prepletajo ter kakšen je globalni pomen teh procesov kot ponorov CO2. El mito de la Baliza V16 japonesa para motos: el bazar de las tonterías Recientemente ha corrido como la pólvora en redes sociales un supuesto "invento revolucionario": una baliza de preseñalización al estilo de nuestra polémica V16, diseñada supuestamente en Japón y adaptada con un soporte universal magnético y de pinza para motocicletas. La realidad, analizada bajo el microscopio técnico es mucho más prosaica: «Eso no es más que una linternita con adaptador de bazar que un genio ha transformado en noticia de internet. Ni es un elemento de preseñalización, ni tiene homologación, ni aporta nada a la seguridad vial. Es un accesorio estético de chufla, como los cuernos de reno que la gente le cuelga a los coches en Navidad». La comparación sirve para recordar que la verdadera V16 en España nació de un despropósito normativo. A pesar de contar con la consolidada homologación europea R65 (que ampara luces de emergencia de alta visibilidad y calidad), la administración española decidió crear una regulación nacional aislada. El resultado ha sido un sistema de balizas cuya implantación técnica y de conectividad sigue arrastrando lagunas de seguridad y de visibilidad que dificultan la protección real del conductor en caso de avería. Conducir en Tokio: 40 millones de personas y un silencio sepulcral Si algo sorprende al bajarse del avión en el área metropolitana de Tokio —un coloso urbano que concentra a casi 40 millones de habitantes, una población similar a la de toda España— es la ausencia de ruido. Al contrario que en las grandes urbes españolas, donde el atasco se acompaña de una banda sonora de bocinazos, acelerones e insultos, el asfalto japonés destaca por su calma y orden. En Japón, las normas no son sugerencias; se respetan a rajatabla. Alberto de la Torre lo experimentó en primera persona al alquilar un keicar (los icónicos coches ultracompactos japoneses de bajas emisiones) cerca del mítico Monte Fuji: «Estuve conduciendo y es increíble la cultura del automóvil que tienen. Ves a señores de más de 70 años conduciendo clásicos o deportivos con guantes de cuero blanco. Pero lo más impactante es el civismo: nadie pita, la gente deja distancias de seguridad holgadas y, si alguien se equivoca, los demás cooperan». De la Torre relató una anécdota que en España habría acabado en conflicto: por la inercia de conducir por la derecha, llegó a meterse sin querer en sentido contrario (en Japón se conduce por la izquierda). ¿La reacción de los conductores nipones? Ninguna señal de agresividad. Al dar por sentado que se trataba de un error humano involuntario, detuvieron sus vehículos con total respeto, le cedieron el espacio suficiente y esperaron pacientemente a que subsanara la maniobra. En España, ese mismo despiste habría provocado una tormenta de bocinazos, agresiones verbales y situaciones de riesgo extremo. Del "Tren Bala" al "Tren Burrilla": la obsesión por las tolerancias mecánicas El contraste cívico se traslada directamente a las vías del tren. Quien viaja a Japón y utiliza el ferrocarril de alta velocidad descubre una precisión que parece de ciencia ficción para un usuario español habitual. Mientras en Valladolid o Madrid celebramos frecuencias de tren cada hora y media como un auténtico privilegio de conectividad, en el país del sol naciente la alta velocidad funciona con la dinámica del metro: Frecuencias constantes: Los trenes bala llegan al andén, detienen su marcha exactamente 2 minutos para la subida de pasajeros y parten con puntualidad de milisegundos. A los 3 minutos, otro convoy repite la operación en el mismo andén. Tolerancia cero a las vibraciones: El viaje en el Shinkansen es de una suavidad absoluta, carente de ruidos, traqueteos o balanceos gracias a un mantenimiento predictivo y a un diseño de tolerancias mecánicas que roza la perfección. La contrapartida la sufrimos a diario en España con el bautizado con ironía como «Tren Burrilla». Los nuevos trenes de ancho variable, por ejemplo, han protagonizado un rosario de incidencias técnicas, retrasos crónicos y vibraciones tan intensas que, como bromea el propio Lagunar, «parece que vas en una sesión de fisioterapia constante en lugar de en un transporte de alta velocidad». La diferencia no es tecnológica; es una cuestión de rigor, de tolerancias industriales y de mantenimiento predictivo. La tolerancia social: ¿nos hemos vuelto demasiado dóciles? El debate concluye con una profunda reflexión sobre la conciencia y la respuesta de la ciudadanía ante el declive de los servicios que financia con sus impuestos. En Japón existe una baja tolerancia social al error del sistema, pero el ciudadano canaliza su civismo cumpliendo escrupulosamente con el orden establecido. En Europa, la respuesta es dispar: mientras los vecinos franceses paralizan el país con protestas (como los chalecos amarillos) cuando sienten que sus derechos son vulnerados, en España parece haberse instalado una preocupante pasividad. Tras la crisis de la pandemia y las restricciones de movilidad, la sociedad española parece haber desarrollado una tolerancia alarmante al deterioro de las carreteras, a los retrasos del transporte ferroviario y a la ineficacia de ciertas normativas de seguridad vial. 1) Entrar: Una vez existió un profesor de cerámica que dividió a la clase en dos. Al primer grupo le pidió a los estudiantes que durante el trimestre se centren en hacer “el jarrón perfecto”, que solo hagan uno, pero que sea perfecto. Al segundo grupo se le pide que haga la mayor cantidad de jarrones pues, cuantos más hagan, mejor nota tendrán. Lo que sucedió es que el grupo que tenía que hacer muchos jarrones logró hacer muchos jarrones y de mejor calidad de jarrones que el grupo que debía hacer un solo jarrón perfecto. Porque es el “esfuerzo y la constancia”, pero por sobre todo la práctica, lo que termina haciéndote una persona superior y superando todo. Es la acción masiva imperfecta lo que hace que te acerques a la perfección, recuerda que “La práctica hace al maestro”. 2) Tribunal: Cuida y enfócate en hacer tu vida, porque siempre hay gente que está como un “tribunal” controlando cada cosa que haces. Hasta a mí me cansa cuando me reenvían mis propios vídeos pidiéndome que les explique por qué lo dije o qué quise decir. Es como que me siento en un tribunal que me observa y, lo peor, es que muchas veces me mandan a decir por otros en vez de venir a decirme a mí, porque siempre el “tribunal” está desde lejos, cuestionando, no consultándote. Por eso no pierdas el tiempo explicando lo que haces, más bien haz las cosas, que solo con el tiempo se van explicando. 3) Ofrenda: Cuando no le gustas a alguien esa persona puede juntarse con otras personas a quien no le gustas y, cuando te das cuenta, hay muchas personas que te critican y no les gusta como sos. Y es parte de la vida esto… si no, mira la cruz. Lo peor es que esas personas no se gustan entre sí, capaz que ni se quieren entre sí, solo se juntan a causa de ti, por eso sé prudente con lo que dices y haces y a quién le cuentas lo que haces, porque con eso das poder a que ellos se junten. ¿Ves que sos poderoso? Logras que la gente se junte para atacarte. Algo bueno está por venir.

Vete en paz, y queda curada de tu enfermedad.» Todavía estaba hablando, cuando llegaron unas personas de la casa del jefe de la sinagoga y le dijeron: «Tu hija ya murió; ¿para qué vas a seguir molestando al Maestro?» Pero Jesús, sin tener en cuenta esas palabras, dijo al jefe de la sinagoga: «No temas, basta que creas.» Y sin permitir que nadie lo acompañara, excepto Pedro, Santiago y Juan, el hermano de Santiago, fue a casa del jefe de la sinagoga. Allí vio un gran alboroto, y gente que lloraba y gritaba. Al entrar, les dijo: « ¿Por qué se alborotan y lloran? La niña no está muerta, sino que duerme.» Y se burlaban de Él. Pero Jesús hizo salir a todos, y tomando consigo al padre y a la madre de la niña, y a los que venían con él, entró donde ella estaba. La tomó de la mano y le dijo: «Talitá kum», que significa: «¡Niña, yo te lo ordeno, levántate!» En seguida la niña, que ya tenía doce años, se levantó y comenzó a caminar. Ellos, entonces, se llenaron de asombro, y él les mandó insistentemente que nadie se enterara de lo sucedido. Después dijo que dieran de comer a la niña. Palabra del Señor.

Pues se decía: “Si logro tocar aunque sólo sea su manto, quedaré sana”.Inmediatamente se secó la fuente de sus hemorragias y sintió que había quedado sana. Jesús se dio cuenta en seguida de la fuerza que había salido de él, se dio vuelta en medio de la gente y preguntó: «¿Quién ha tocado mi ropa?» Sus discípulos le contestaron: «Ves que la gente te está apretujando ¿y preguntas quién te ha tocado?» Pero él miraba alrededor a ver si descubría a la que lo había hecho. La mujer, entonces, asustada y temblorosa, sabiendo lo que le había pasado, se acercó, se postró ante él y le contó toda la verdad. Jesús le dijo: «Hija, tu fe te ha salvado; vete en paz; estás liberada de tu mal». Todavía estaba hablando cuando llegaron unos de casa del jefe de la sinagoga diciendo: «Tu hija ha muerto; no sigas molestando al Maestro». Pero Jesús, que oyó la noticia, dijo al jefe de la sinagoga: «No temas; basta con que sigas creyendo». Y sólo permitió que lo acompañaran Pedro, Santiago y Juan, el hermano de Santiago. Llegaron a casa del jefe de la sinagoga y, al ver el tumulto, unos que lloraban y otros que daban grandes gritos, entró y les dijo: «¿Por qué este tumulto y estos llantos? La niña no ha muerto; está dormida». Pero ellos se burlaban de él. Entonces Jesús echó fuera a todos, tomó consigo al padre de la niña, a la madre y a los que lo acompañaban, y entró a donde estaba la niña. La tomó de la mano y le dijo: «Talitha kum» (que significa: Niña, a ti te hablo, levántate). La niña se levantó al instante y se puso a caminar, pues tenía doce años. Oyó hablar de Jesús y, acercándose por detrás, entre la gente, le tocó el manto, pensando: «Con solo tocarle el manto curaré». Jesús alcanzó a oír lo que hablaban y le dijo al jefe de la sinagoga: «No temas; basta que tengas fe». No permitió que lo acompañara nadie, más que Pedro, Santiago y Juan, el hermano de Santiago. Llegan a casa del jefe de la sinagoga y encuentra el alboroto de los que lloraban y se lamentaban a gritos y después de entrar les dijo: «¿Qué estrépito y qué lloros son estos? La niña no está muerta; está dormida». Se reían de él. Pero él los echó fuera a todos y, con el padre y la madre de la niña y sus acompañantes, entró donde estaba la niña, la cogió de la mano y le dijo: Talitha qumi (que significa: «Contigo hablo, niña, levántate»). La niña se levantó inmediatamente y echó a andar; tenía doce años. Y quedaron fuera de sí llenos de estupor. Una noche, afuera de tu casa, le disparan a alguien. Mientras piden ayuda (la cual no llega) tú te das cuenta de que la víctima no va a sobrevivir porque… Ves a la muerte junto a ella.   «Porque el ocuparse de la carne es muerte, pero el ocuparse del Espíritu es vida y paz». (Romanos 8:6) Si te dieran a escoger entre la vida y la muerte, ¿cuál escogerías? La respuesta parece obvia, pero en realidad no lo es. Elegir la muerte no significa saltar del puente más cercano; es mucho más sutil que eso. La Biblia dice que ocuparse de la carne y enredarse en el mundo es muerte. La Biblia también dice que la Palabra de Dios es vida: «Hijo mío, presta atención a mis palabras… Ellas son vida…» (Proverbios 4:20-22). Ocuparse del mundo es muerte. Ocuparse de la Palabra es vida. En Lucas 10, hay una historia que ilustra muy bien este principio: Es la historia de María y Marta. Quizás tú la recuerdas. María estaba sentada a los pies de Jesús oyéndolo enseñar mientras que Marta, muy afanada, estaba en la cocina preparando el almuerzo para todos. Por fin, Marta no soportó más. «…Se acercó a Jesús y le dijo: «Señor, ¿no te importa que mi hermana me deje trabajar sola? ¡Dile que me ayude!» Jesús le respondió: «Marta, Marta, estás preocupada y aturdida con muchas cosas. Pero una sola cosa es necesaria. María ha escogido la mejor parte, y nadie se la quitará.»» (Lucas 10:40-42). María había dejado todo a un lado para oír la Palabra. Pero Marta había dejado que los asuntos de la vida, aparentemente importantes, tomaran prioridad sobre la Palabra. Había elegido la muerte en lugar de la vida. ¿Ves lo fácil que es caer en esa trampa? Podrías decir: “Pero, hermano Copeland, si yo no pasara todo mi tiempo atendiendo los asuntos de la vida, terminaría fracasando”. ¿De veras? Marta probablemente pensó lo mismo. Probablemente pensó que si no preparaba el almuerzo para toda esa gente, pasarían hambre. Pero no hubiera sido así. Jesús había alimentado milagrosamente a multitudes, y Él podía hacerlo otra vez en la casa de Marta. Ella pudo haberse sentado a los pies de Jesús y haber disfrutado de un banquete costeado por Dios. No cometas el mismo error que Marta. No te enredes tanto en los asuntos de la vida para que no escojas, por descuido, la muerte. Decide poner la Palabra en primer lugar. ¡Escoge la vida! Routine vaginal examinations (VEs) are a standard component of intrapartum care, traditionally performed at regular intervals to monitor cervical dilation, effacement, and fetal station, which are indicators of labor progression. Yet, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that there is insufficient evidence to recommend a specific frequency for cervical examinations during labor, and examinations should be performed as clinically indicated.
