Central Oregon recorded a nearly 20% drop in people experiencing homelessness compared to last year. That’s according to an annual Point in Time count that took place this year from Jan. 27 through Feb. 2 in Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson Counties and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Eliza Wilson is the chair of the Homeless Leadership Coalition in Central Oregon and the executive director of RootedHomes, an affordable housing developer based in Bend. Wilson says this has been the largest year-over-year decline she has seen in over 20 years of helping with the annual snapshot of people experiencing homelessness in the region. She attributes this unprecedented decline to opening new shelters and expanding shelter bed capacity in communities like Madras, Bend, Redmond and Prineville, while also providing rental assistance and case management to help people transition into stable housing. Wilson joins us for more details on the progress that’s being made in Central Oregon to tackle homelessness and the work that still needs to be done.

What does it really take to build a healthier community in Central Oregon? In this BendBeat episode, Brian sits down with Megan Haase, CEO of Mosaic Community Health, to unpack the vital role Mosaic plays across Bend, Redmond, Prineville, Madras, and Sisters—and why their work impacts nearly one out of every eight Central Oregonians. They explore: ⦁ What "whole-person care" actually means in practice ⦁ How Mosaic evolved from a single modular clinic to serving over 36,000 patients ⦁ Why community health centers are essential to prevention, not just crisis care ⦁ Mosaic's work with Medicaid, uninsured patients, and fixed-income families ⦁ School-based health centers and youth mental health access ⦁ Mobile and outreach medicine serving unhoused neighbors in forests and rural areas ⦁ The real consequences of losing insurance coverage and rising healthcare costs ⦁ Why affordability, access, and collaboration are the future of healthcare This conversation offers a clear, human look at how healthcare systems either strengthen or strain a community, and why Mosaic's model matters now more than ever. Reed tells so many stories this episode, and all of them are so groovy! (you can absolutely tell that he excels as a storyteller and troubadour simply because he is a natural born teller of tales!) He shares what happened one time on a mountain hike...and how being polite and kind changed his life forever (it's always the moments you never suspect that will change everything!) as well as how his grandmother, fierce math prodigy and grand-mama bear had his back! This conversation is full of laughter (probably too much tbh) and heart-healing revelations, and is simply the cherry on top of the double-decker release of BOTH Paloma Estevez's and Reed's episodes! To check out SUN & THE SAINT, why, here's their website! And to check out their YouTube, click here! And then, last but not least, their Spotify! And if you need to check out (you know you want to) Prineville, where Reed grew up, here's a link to their City Website. It looks like we missed the Turkey Shoot in November, but they have a Holiday Sale on Dec. 13th that is not to be missed! PLEASE AND THANK YOU, REMEMBER TO RATE AND REVIEW...IT HELPS EVER SO MUCH! In 1882, a land dispute escalated to violence — and then led to a lynch mob taking justice into its own hands. For two years afterward, the members of that lynch mob stayed active, forming a shadow government in the Prineville area enforced by masked riders with drawn guns and ready ropes ... and for a year or two, Prineville was the murder capital of Oregon. This is the story of how that happened ... and how the Vigilantes were defeated. The Federal Railroad Administration, which is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, is investing more than $40 million in rail funding for Oregon. Projects span the state and include work in Linn and Lake Counties and Coos Bay. Prineville is getting funding specifically allocated for rural communities. The grant will help the city restore its rail line and improve safety. Prineville’s railway has experienced its ups and downs. When the lumber business was booming in the ’60s, the railway was a major economic driver for the region. In recent years, the railway has had to reinvent itself to stay in business. We hear more about the efforts from Matt Wiederholt, the general manager of the City of Prineville Railway.
Program publiceret i DR Lyd d. 15/10.
Many Oregon towns, when bypassed by the railroad, withered into tiny hamlets — but one of them built its own railroad instead. It's still in business today, and it's the oldest continuously operating municipal short line in the U.S. (Prineville, Crook County; 1910s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/0905b_h114.prineville-railroad.html)
Crook County citizens finally decided they'd had enough of the secretive lynchings and killings; they banded together and defeated the gang of masked riders without a single shot being fired. (Prineville, Crook County; 1880s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1212a-prineville-vigilantes-defeated-without-a-shot.html)
In Crook County, the early 1880s were like something out of a Louis L'Amour novel: Masked riders galloping around by night, dispensing what they saw as justice. It all started with the lynching of an innocent man. (Part 1 of 2) (Prineville, Crook County; 1880s) (For text and pictures, see https://offbeatoregon.com/1211d-lynching-kicked-off-vigilante-rule-in-prineville.html)

We caught up with him at Prineville to talk about what this year has meant and ended up talking a lot about the mental elements that keep you on top through a full summer of rodeoing
Wall Street financial wizard Thomas Lawson happened to be in town and betting on Prineville. After three months, Paul and his companions sailed from Malta and eventually landed at Puteoli, where they continued their journey to Rome. Along the way, Paul sought out and was sought by other believers, and they encouraged one another. Once in Rome he was chained to a guard, but didn't let that stop him from preaching the gospel to anyone and everyone. He even sent for Jews from each of the local synagogues to preach to them. Some received him; others did not. For two years he stayed in his own house and was allowed to freely preach the gospel without harassment and persecution, something he had never experienced. Rory noted that this is the end of the written book of Acts, but it really continues on to this day. We are a part of it and as Paul, need to be boldly and fearlessly preaching the gospel, whether in far off lands or in Prineville.

An elementary school in Prineville doesn't have its own school library and had been sending students to the local public library to check out books and learn how to use the library as a resource. As first reported by the Bend Bulletin, the school district decided to end the practice recently after some parents brought up concerns about books their children brought home that discuss race, gender and puberty. The district declined our request to come on “Think Out Loud.” Crook County Library Director April Witteveen will join us.

He published these interviews in his critically acclaimed 2005 book In the Eye of History: Bethesda Hospital Evidence in the JFK Assassination. Law has produced two other important books, At the Cold Shoulder of History: The Chilling Story of a 21-Year Old Navy Hospital Corpsman Who Stood at the Shoulder of JFK During the Bethesda Autopsy, written with eyewitness James Jenkins, and Betrayal: A JFK Honor Guard Speaks, written with Hugh Clark. Law and Don Jeffries discuss all his research, along with his yet-to-be-released documentary and book on the RFK assassination, as well as his investigation into the death of Marilyn Monroe. In Crook County, the early 1880s were like something out of a Louis L'Amour novel: Masked riders galloping around by night, dispensing what they saw as justice. It all started with the lynching of an innocent man. Wall Street financial wizard Thomas Lawson happened to be in town and betting on Prineville. With Silver Lake up 9-0 halfway through, he knew just what to do: Buy the other team a round of drinks ... or two, or three .... Although Oregon's towns and cities glow brighter with night lights, Prineville Reservoir State Park is the first Oregon park to be certified as an International Dark Sky Park. This means it's earned a spot alongside less than 200 locations around the world. We hear from Mike Simonsen, a park manager who worked on landing Prineville's designation. Bob Grossfeld, manager of the Oregon Observatory in Sunriver, joins as well. Sunriver earned an International Dark Sky Place designation last year. They share details about why protecting the night sky is important and how seeing stars helps Oregonians connect with the universe.
Redemption House Ministries in Prineville runs two shelters for people experiencing homelessness and also provides meals to anyone in need. The food is served at the nonprofit's cafe, known as Craig's Compassionate Cafe, and charges $.50 per meal or offers people the option to trade a chore for a meal. Thé café has been closed during the pandemic but recently reopened to resume its mission. Cindy Burback is the executive director of Redemption House Ministries and she says that since the cafe also brings meals out to people in camps, volunteers may feed as many as 30 people in a day. We talk with Burback about the cafe and Redemption House Ministries' larger role in caring for some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
