Priyanka Mattoo is the author of Bird Milk & Mosquito Bones, a wonderful memoir about food and place and how moving around the world inspired volumes and volumes of stories. We so loved having Priyanka into the studio, and we covered some serious ground. We discuss her upbringing in the UK, Saudi Arabia, and Ann Arbor, Michigan, and her journey to Hollywood, where she worked as a talent agent and studio executive. We talk about food on TV, The Bear (naturally), but also what excites her on television today. Also on the show, Matt talks about his recent trip to India with chef Meherwan Irani of restaurants Chai Pani and Botiwalla. They visited Mumbai, Pune, and Ahmednagar and experienced so much including stops at Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, Cafe Yezdan, and Parsi Dairy Farm.Do you enjoy This Is TASTE? When you think of the sort of life that one might have lead that might be worthy of a memoir, one that is so full of stories that it probably could fill more than one book, former comedy agent turned producer turned author Priyanka Mattoo has lead such a life. Said life includes living in several dozens places across the world starting out in Kashmir and eventually ending up in LA, then working her way up the agency ladder, then wanting to manifest her own big time ideas/projects. Thusly, Mattoo has just published her wild journey in her memoir Bird Milk & Mosquito Bones, available now wherever you get books. We have a nice in-depth chat that takes a tour of this far reaching journey that is inextricably tied to comedy for this week's TCB Field Report. Gabe Kennedy is the all-star chef behind Highland Park's Checker Hall. He joins us today to tell us his high-octane journey, which includes winning Anthony Bourdain's competition show “The Taste,” co-founding one of the hottest plant-based supplement companies on the market, and uprooting his life in New York to relocate to LA and grace our city with one of the most fun dining experiences I've had in a long time in Highland Park's Checker Hall.  One conversation with Gabe and you're immediately hooked. You can just really tell how much this guy cares, not just about making delicious food, but about doing things that have real meaning and thought behind them. Personally I'm stoked to have Checker Hall in my backyard, but they've got a chicken schnitzel that is 100% worth driving across town for. Not to mention the historic building, the fantastic cocktails, the music venue next door. It's one of the most fun evenings you can have in our fair city, and I think you'll be makin' a rez right after you hear Gabe talk about it.  But first, Father Sal and I break down the things that caught my eye this week. There's the Infatuation's lackluster review of Vespertine, an intriguing albeit quite cringey Taste article on The Best Restaurant in Town, and a discussion on whether shoppy shops are good, bad or somewhere in between for neighborhoods. In a company blog post, VP and head of global advertising business Jay Richman said that the service is "taking formats that traditionally have been more of a static experience and making it a more personalized and attractive one." That said, in a story for The Verge, Ashley Carman explains that while Spotify's new technology breaks ground in the industry, it also puts consumer privacy at risk. "Podcasts are sensitive listening data — the topics can be niche and revealing — so users rightly might have privacy concerns about how what they consume will be siphoned back to brands," says Carman. When Richman was asked about these issues, he responded that consumers can opt-out of data targeting. If you want more information on this topic, head to the Snacks Daily podcast. Hosts Nick and Jack share some more information about how strategic ad insertion will appear in your listening experience.Mermaid Palace, Kaitlin Prest's new production house, is bringing The Heart back to the podcast airwaves in partnership with Radiotopia.
