משיחת יום ב' פ' אמור, אדר"ח אייר ה'תשמ"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-04-2025 Synopsis The Rebbe Maharash taught the approach of lechatchila ariber (“going above in the first place”) as the famous saying goes: “The world says that if you can't go under, you go over – and I say one should go above in the first place.” (This explains why most of the Rebbe Maharash's hemshechim began on Pesach, “the Time of our Freedom.”) And he prefaced it with saying what the world says, and then adding that nevertheless, “I say” that one should go m'lechatchila ariber – in order to bring about the concept of lechatchila ariber within the world itself. This will be complete with the true and complete Redemption, but we must have a taste of it already now, by studying Torah, keeping mitzvos, and giving tzedakah in a manner of m'lechatchila ariber – beyond all measure and limitation. One shouldn't wait to give tzedakah until the collector comes and pressures him; rather, lechatchila ariber – he should seek out the collector himself and offer to give the tzedakah. Similarly, when it comes to impacting others, one must seize the first possible moment to bring them the idea of lechatchila ariber. The very decision to adopt the approach of lechatchila ariber must be done in the spirit of lechatchila ariber – “We will do and we will hear” – not waiting until one understands it intellectually, but first doing it, and thinking about it afterwards.Excerpt from sichah of Monday, parashas Emor, first day of Rosh Chodesh Iyar 5741 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-04-2025 לזכות שמואל בן שושנה שי' ליום ההולדת שלו ב' אייר - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות

Solar Faith Vs. Lunar Faith: Why the Women Rejected the Golden Calf and Were Given the Holiday of Rosh ChodeshThis class was presented on Tuesday, Rosh Chodesh (the first day of the month of Iyar, 5785, April 29, 2025, Parshas Tazria-Metzora, at The Barn @ 84 Viola Rd. in Montebello, NY. This text-based class explores a Chassidic discourse by Rabbi Shmuel Schneerson, the fourth Lubavitcher Rebbe, the Rebbe Maharash, L'Havin Inyan Rosh Chodesh, presented on Shabbos Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, 5640, October 18, 1879. The discourse explains why the holiday of Rosh Chodesh was given primarily to women. Weexplore the reason the Jews created the Golden Calf, and the unique gifts of the feminine—its ability to embody the oneness of G-d in a visceral way, rather than in a sublime, aloof way.View Source Sheets: http://portal.theyeshiva.net/api/source-sheets/9665

Working on one's personal redemption, and that of one's family and those around him, will hasten the global Redemption speedily in our days. (2) The general directive from the Rebbe Maharash (whose birthday it is) is that one should conduct himself in the manner of m'lechatchila ariber – meaning that from the very beginning of one's service, his approach should be elevated and exalted, even above the highest things. The idea of m'lechatchila ariber also relates to “nesius” – and certainly to the Nasi of the teachings of Chassidus (which teach a person to go beyond the letter of the law – also an expression of m'lechatchila ariber). This is also emphasized by the Rebbe Maharash's birth on 2 Iyar: at the very moment of his birth, it was already Tiferes Sheb'Tiferes.(1) Excerpt from sichah of Monday night, 2 Iyar 5748. The Alter Rebbe's unique script for safrus has a rich and winding history. It has been inked, shelved, revived, and debated—and everyone seems to have an opinion. So, what is the story behind this ksav? What sets it apart? Why do some embrace it wholeheartedly while others remain unsure? This class explores its historical trajectory, some of its writing nuances, and the ongoing conversation around its adoption.Links to images:Megilah of Rebbe Maharash in Aguch library:https://hebrewstam.blogspot.com/2013/03/blog-post_120.htmlMegilah attributed to Rebbe Maharash, Carlebach family:https://yeshivasstam.com/maharashTefillin of the Frierdiker Rebbe:https://hebrewstam.blogspot.com/2012/11/blog-post_19.html#comment-formTefillin attributed to Reb Reuven Sofer, Gurary family:https://hebrewstam.blogspot.com/2016/01/blog-post_21.htmlThe Story of the Alter Rebbe's Script
The Rebbe expresses joy at the recipient's improving health and advises not to worry about sleep if following medical guidance. He recommends keeping a kosher mezuzah near the bed and shares a teaching from the Rebbe Maharash about having Shivisi Hashem visible. He encourages checking on the religious observance of nearby neighbors and concludes with blessings for a full recovery. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/004_igros_kodesh/shevat/900
משיחת פורים, ה'תשכ"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=11-03-2025 Synopsis The Gemara says: “Where is Mordechai alluded to in the Torah? As it is written (in rishon of parashas Ki Sisa), ‘mar dror' (pure myrrh), which is translated as ‘mira dachya.'” Seemingly, what connection does Mordechai Hatzaddik have to Targum, which signifies exile, and to “mar dror,” a fragrance derived from the blood of an impure animal – which represents the service of baalei teshuvah? The Rebbe Maharash explains that it's because of the people of Mordechai's generation. This can be understood based on the explanation of the verse, “Return, Yisroel, to Hashem your G-d, for you have stumbled in your iniquity”: seemingly, “stumbling” applies to the level of Yaakov (the “heel”) of the Jewish people, not Yisroel? But the truth is that when the heel stumbles, it's because something isn't correct with the head (which supplies vitality to the heel). This is also why, following the sin of the golden calf, Hashem said to Moshe (in parashas Ki Sisa): “Go, descend” – “Descend from your greatness” – even though Moshe on the mountain with Hashem when the golden calf was made and he had no involvement in the sin – because since they are “your people,” and “isn't it only for the sake of the Jewish people that I granted you greatness,” therefore, if there was a deficiency in them, this reflected a deficiency in Moshe as well. Similarly, regarding Mordechai: Since he was the head of the Sanhedrin, whose job is to impart wisdom to the people so they would not come to sin in the first place, and yet in his generation, there were those who “had enjoyment from the feast of that wicked one,” that showed that Mordechai also had to do teshuvah.Excerpt from sichah of Purim 5721 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=11-03-2025

We find both of these in the Rambam's Mishneh Torah as well: (a) The name of the sefer is “Mishneh Torah,” and it also begins with the verse “Meshoch chasdecha…”, while it concludes with “kamayim layam mechasim.” (b) The end of the sefer, “The entire world will be occupied solely with the knowledge of Hashem…they will attain knowledge of their Creator… the earth will be filled with the knowledge of Hashem, etc.,” parallels the beginning – “To know that there is a Primary Being” upon which all of existence depends etc. (2) On the verse, “I will remove illness from your midst,” the Gemara explains that “Illness refers to bile. And why is it called illness (machalah)? Because [bile] contains eighty-three illnesses; which is the Gematria of machalah (83), and all of them are negated by bread in the morning and a flask of water.” This is the allusion in the 83 sets of halachos in Rambam: Studying the halachos of the Torah – which is the sustenance of the soul – as set forth in the 83 sets of Halachos in Rambam, brings healing through the Torah, in such a way that “I will not place it upon you to begin with.”Excerpt from sichah of Motzei Zos Chanukah 5746 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=28-02-2025 לע"נ ר' ארי׳ ליב אברהם יעקב בן יוסף ע"ה שיינער ליום היארצייט שלו א' אדר (שני). ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

That is, although we must use a physical candle, it contains a miracle, and in a revealed fashion (Shehechiyanu is only recited over something visible). The lesson for the entire year: even when a Jew lives according to the ways of nature and engages with worldly matters, there is a miracle embedded within nature; as the Rebbe Maharash writes, parnassah these days is miraculous, akin to the man that sustained the Jewish people in the desert. The same applies to spiritual sustenance – the battle against the yetzer hara; therefore one can be certain that he will succeed in the battle. Yosef said to his brothers (at the end of sheini of Parashas Vayigash), “It was for sustenance that Hashem sent me before you… and to preserve for you for a great deliverance”: during exile, every Jew is like Yosef, whose mission is to “keep a great populace alive” – the entire Jewish people, and as the Rambam states as a matter of law, every individual must view himself as though he and the entire world are equally balanced, and through one single deed, he can bring “salvation and deliverance” for himself and the entire world.Excerpts from farbrengen of Monday, Parashas Vayigash, Motzaei Zos Chanukah 5735 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=02-01-2025

משיחת אור לכ' מרחשון ה'תשמ"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=21-11-2024 Synopsis Every Jew must have physical abundance and open and revealed good (like the story of the Tzemach Tzedek – when a chasid brought him a gift of painted furniture, the Tzemach Tzedek said that he doesn't need it, but that the chasid should give it to his son, the Rebbe Maharash). But at the same time, physical abundance shouldn't be one's passion and focus in life. As Chassidim said of the Ruzhiner, he conducted himself opulently, to the point that he wore golden slippers, but without soles – so it hurt when he walked! At least once a day or once a week, one must take time alone to picture the image of his great-grandfather, whose whole vitality in life was Torah and mitzvos, and to bring about the same in his own life, at least during those moments. This will impact his behavior throughout the entire day; although “darkness covers the other etc.,” and everyone sees the “nations provoking one another,” still everyone knows that even during exile in this physical world, “from where will my help come” (from the level of Ayin), and “Behold the Guardian of the Jewish people will neither sleep nor slumber” – “Behold” is an expression of joy – serving Hashem with joy, which breaks through boundaries etc.Excerpt from sichah of 20 Marcheshvan 5741 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=21-11-2024 לזכות ר' שלום דובער בן רבקה צירה שי' ליום ההולדת שלו כ' מרחשון - לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובות
משיחת ליל ו' דחג הסוכות, כ' תשרי ה'תש"נ ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=22-10-2024 Synopsis Today's main Ushpiz is Yosef, while the main Ushpiz of the Chassidishe Ushpizin is the Rebbe Maharash. The connection between them: The unique approach of the Rebbe Maharash was “l'chatchila ariber,” going “over in the first place.” Meaning, even though the way of the world (even according to Torah) is to follow a certain logical order, nevertheless the Jew declares that the order of the inner dimension of Torah is l'chatchilah ariber. And this is also embodied by Yosef, whose name means “increase” – the idea of starting immediately with an increase. Similarly, Yosef's name comes from the expression “Yosef li Hashem ben acher” (“May Hashem add for me another son”), that is, turning the “other” into a “son” – and doing so in the first place (unlike the usual order, where there is first a regular “son,” and then a “son” who was previously “other”) – l'chatchilah ariber. The idea is not to nullify the world's conduct, but to the contrary – to transform the world's existence to the ultimate perfection and goodness, and with joy and gladness of heart. And we increase even more in the joy of tonight's Simchas Beis Hashoevah over the joy of the previous nights and previous years, as we prepare to continue with the Simchas Beis Hashoevah in the third Beis Hamikdash, literally right now.Excerpt from sichah of the sixth night of Sukkos, 20 Tishrei 5750 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=22-10-2024

ב' חלקים משיחת ליל י"ג תשרי ה'תשד"מ ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=14-10-2024 Synopsis The Rebbe Maharash would say that one must go m'lechatchilah ariber, “over the challenge in the first place.” On his yom heilulah we are given special abilities to engage in everything he would want us to be involved in, and in a manner of m'lechatchilah ariber. What would he want us to be involved in? It is obvious: to study Nigleh and Chassidus, and to give tzedakah physically or materially etc. Even if one doesn't know exactly which maamar or topic in Nigleh the Rebbe Maharash would want him to learn, when it comes to action – giving tzedakah – there is no doubt: one should give tzedakah literally, to provide people with all they need for Yom Tov. May it be Hashem's will that everyone utilize these abilities, and not get stuck in the “pearl barley” for the “soup,” but rather to be involved with actual pearls – matters of Torah and mitzvos. When the Rebbe Maharash would travel abroad, his Rebbetzin would pawn her jewelry and give the proceeds to tzedakah; when her husband would return he would have to redeem it. The lesson for Jewish women is: while they need to have jewelry, however when an opportunity for tzedakah comes, they must seize the opportunity, and they are promised that Hashem, the “Husband” of the Jewish people, will redeem the jewelry, including physical jewelry in the literal sense. Two excerpts from sichah of 13 Tishrei 5744 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=14-10-2024 לע”נ מרת רייזל רבקה בת ר' יעקב יוסף ע"ה גלאסנער ליום היארצייט שלה י"ב תשרי. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.
here is a well-known story about the Rebbe Maharash making a special trip to save one Jew. In your case, there are several Jews, and it might also help with fundraising. This maamar was originally delivered by the Rebbe on the second day of Shavups 5729 (1969.) In this class, we cover the first three chapters of the maamar in which the Rebbe begins to analyze a maamar of the Rebbe Maharash of the same name that was delivered 100 years earlier. The central theme is the idea of Hashem's words at Sinai being directed to the individual.
Rabbi Jacobson will discuss the following topics:What lessons and empowerment does this time-period and Torah portion offer us in facing today's war? What is the significance of the period between Pesach and Shavuos? What does the month of Iyar teach us? What is the connection between Rafah and healing? What do we learn from Pesach Sheni? How does counting the Omer help refine and strengthen us? Weeks of Netzach and Hod: What are netzach and hod and what are their functions? Behar: What does a “mountain” teach us? Do the laws of Yovel apply today? Beis Iyar How to fight a war with a l'chatchila ariber attitude? Who was the Rebbe Maharash named after and what do we learn from that? Should we induce labor to give birth to a child on an auspicious day like Beis Iyar? What do we learn from the soldiers that were tragically killed by “friendly fire”? Is Israel the safest place on earth? How do we reconcile the Rebbe's statement that Israel is the safest place in the world with the unfortunate fact that over 1,200 people were murdered in one day in Israel? Should we move to Israel due to fears of rising anti-Semitism? How can we apply the concept of l'chatchila ariber to the current physical and spiritual war? How should we react to President Biden withholding arms from Israel and to the general anti-Israel stance among some USA officials? Should we remain allies with the USA or perhaps turn to Russia and China for support? Are the soldiers tzaddikim? Is it possible that my putting on Tefillin actually caused harm to our soldiers? What power do our actions have in impacting world events? War with Hamas

ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=10-05-2024 Synopsis A collection of stories about the Rebbe Maharash: (1) When the Rebbe Maharash's teacher told his father, the Tzemach Tzedek, how well he was doing, his father replied, “Why are you surprised that Tiferes Sheb'Tiferes does well?” (2) The Chassidim once asked the Rebbe Maharash, who was six or seven years old at the time and in middle of playing, to provide the source for a certain Midrash the Tzemach Tzedek had cited in a maamar, and he answered them immediately. (3) The Rebbe Maharash lived an exceptionally wealthy lifestyle, with everything made of gold etc. After my grandfather's wedding, he spent time as one of the “sitters” at the court of the Rebbe Maharash (unlike nowadays when young couples run off after the wedding to a “honeymoon,” subjecting themselves to numerous stumbling blocks etc.; would that this bad practice be abolished). When he returned from Lubavitch, someone asked him why the Rebbe Maharash lives so lavishly, when he could give the money to tzedakah etc.? He replied, “Fool, fool, for whom was the gold created?” Another story about the Rebbe Maharash's lavish lifestyle: every morning his coachmen would drive him into the forest with a carriage harnessed to four or six horses etc. One day, the Chassidim got the coachman to divulge the “strange conduct” he observed on these daily trips: the Rebbe would sit under a tree and cry, with all the ants crawling on him etc. People might have thought it was a trip for leisure, but to the contrary, the Rebbe was afflicting himself.Stories of the Rebbe Maharash: (1) Excerpt from sichah of Motza'ei Shabbos, Parashas Tazria-Metzora, 5739; (2) excerpt from sichah of 13 Nissan 5726; (3) excerpt from sichah of Purim 5728. We learn this from the construction of the Mishkan, where the people who constructed it are generally not mentioned by name. And the truth is that the Mishkan was built and erected only by the power of Moshe Rabbeinu (as it says in Revi'i of Parashas Pekudei). Similarly, in our generation, one must know that the building of the Mishkan in every place is by the power of and through the Rebbe! Since the function of the Mishkan is the indwelling of the Shechinah, therefore, even after it has been built, its holiness constantly increases every day (like the explanation of the Rebbe Maharash's instruction to the Rebbe Nishmaso Eden' to review every maamar 60 times – that the difference between the 60th time and the 59th time is even greater than the difference between the 60th time and the first time). The same applies to the Mishkan within every Jew: even after it has been built, one must “ascend in holiness” every day. And since one is connected to the leader of the generation, who is without limit, his Divine service must also be without limit.Excerpt from sichah of Yud Shevat 5714 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=15-03-2024

As the Alter Rebbe writes, nowadays fasting can, God forbid, bring health issues. Study more Torah, daven properly with a minyan, and say Tehilim. Study Chitas. Do as the Rebbe Maharash said: take 15 minutes to think about your situation to bring about an addition to your Torah and mitzvot. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/012/006/4151b

ב' חלקים משיחת י"ט כסלו ה'תשכ"ו ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=31-10-2023 Synopsis The Tzemach Tzedek had a set time each month when he would personally test all the children in the cheder where his son, the Rebbe Maharash, learned, and after testing them he would give them prizes. When we talk about going out to gather Jewish children and teach them Alef-Beis, some people claim: I'm a big maskil and oved etc., why should I occupy myself with this, when others can do it? But we must know that this is a “mitzvah applicable to the body”: in order for one's body to become more refined etc., he must go against his nature, by gathering Jewish children to teach them Alef-Beis – just like the Tzemach Tzedek, who personally took the time every month to engage in the education of young children! And even if until now one was busy with mesiras-nefesh and contemplating the Divine oneness, he must know that there's an even greater service – to go to the “outside” and gather children and teach them that Hashem runs the world! As my father-in-law the Rebbe explains, the mesiras-nefesh of Rabbi Akiva, who strove for mesiras-nefesh – “when will I have the opportunity to fulfill it” – isn't as great as the mesiras-nefesh of Avraham Avinu, who personally went out among the gentiles to influence them to call out by the name of Hashem, G-d of the world! Two excerpts from sicha of 19 Kislev 5726 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=31-10-2023

A weekly shiur by Dayan Levi Yitzchok Raskin, Rov of Anash in London, explores interesting Torah questions and halachic dilemmas. The following issues are discussed by Dayan Raskin in this week's episode: 1) A Halocho ruling from the Rebbe Maharash זי"ע:[1] 2) One member paid for his set of Arba Minim, but will only receive it from me on Sunday, 2nd day of Yomtov. Does this raise a question of trade on Yomtov? [2] 3) I ordered clothes on Amazon. If they arrive on Yomtov, may they be worn? [3] 4) We don't begin the meal on the 1st night of Yomtov before nacht. Why? [4] 5) Our Chabad House caters for many Israeli students. Our Yomtov schedule billed the meal on Shmini Atzeres to be held in the Succah. One student objected, maintaining that before eating in the Succah on Shmini Atzeres one has to first disqualify the Succah. What do you advise?[5] 6) On Shmini Atzeres we begin saying Moirid haGeshem, following the announcement in Shul before Musaf to that effect. What if I am unable to go to Shul: do I follow the times of ‘my' Shul or should I follow the times of the majority of the Shuls in the vicinity?[6] 7) I honoured one Shul member to be Chosson Torah, then I realized that he's a Levi:[7] 8) Why does an Aliya to the Torah call for an after-brocho, unlike any other Mitzvah? [8] 9) I know that on Shabbos one may wear one belt per garment. I wear a belt in my trousers; I tuck my shirt into my trousers. May I wear a belt over my shirt? א' השיחות דהתוועדות יום ד', אור לי"ג תשרי ה'תשמ"ז ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=28-09-2023 Synopsis Going milechatchila ariber applies especially to this year, which began on Shabbos, which is about rest and delight, when we refrain from work, to point that there is “no sadness on it,” and Hashem says, “Borrow on My account, and I will repay it,” and moreover, “there is no worry on it,” because “all your work is done.” When Rosh Hashana falls out on Shabbos, and we kept Shabbos fully, the point that we refrained even from blowing shofar, and we acted Shabbosdik in a manner of milechatchila ariber – that continues the entire year: “there is no sadness on it,” and “all your work is done.” And if one asks that seemingly it is necessary to “sow your field for six years” etc. – we tell him: You must go milechatchila ariber, and then – “strangers shall stand and pasture your sheep etc.”! Though this verse refers to the future era – we know the analogy given by the Rebbe Maharash that when we perform a mitzvah now – we have the reward immediately, just that it is locked in a box, but the One Who commands the mitzvah gives the box, along with the key, to the one who performs the mitzvah. Therefore, there is no room for worry! And just like the first day of Rosh Hashanah fell out on Shabbos, so, too, the first day of Sukkos (when everything that was “hidden” on Rosh Hashanah is revealed), and so, too Shemini Atzeres fall out on Shabbos. In terms of Divine service: when a Jew, even a small child, studies Torah or performs a mitzvah, he is “Shabbosdik” – removed from mundane matters, and feels uplifted. One of the sichos from farbrengen of the night of 13 Tishrei 5747 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=28-09-2023

Why do our sighs have such impact? An excerpt from Hayom Yom:"My revered grandfather, the Rebbe [Maharash], once said: “Even when the sigh of Jew is occasioned by an unfavorable material circumstance (Heaven forbid), this too is a significant act of teshuvah {=expression of yearning to be close to G-d.} All the more so, a sigh due to an unfavorable spiritual situation is most certainly a lofty level of teshuva. It drags one out of the depths of evil, and sets him up in a good place.”Support the show

Rabbi Chaim Shapiro - Spread the Message “It has to krich in your kishkes that hayitochen Moshiach is not here!” “The only way we can create this sense of urgency for Moshiach, is if we connect ourselves to the Rebbe and learn the Rebbe's Sichos and Ma'amorim!” “The Rebbe Maharash told the man 'If you learn a full hour of Chassidus, then you will surely find the time to learn Gemarah the rest of the day or at least part of it.'”

Today is the birthday of the Rebbe Maharash, Reb Shmuel, the fourth Chabad Rebbe. He taught us a new perspective of dealing with issues, or, more correctly, not dealing with them. "Lechatchilah Ariber!" How can you add positivity into your life today?
"A Jew does not find himself in a circumstance, a Jew creates the circumstance." In today's Hayom Yom, the Rebbe Maharash explains a line in Gemara as the guide to a Yid's perspective on life: we were sent to bring Hashem's Glory into every situation. How can you infuse Hashem into your current mood today?

Rabbi Jacobson will discuss the following topics: Lessons from Yud Gimmel Tishrei – 139th yahrzeit of the Rebbe Maharash What should we learn from the Rebbe Maharash? How does his life and leadership impact us? What is the connection between the Tzemech Tzedek being daas and “now let's travel to father to hear what is doing”? Story: A Rebbe never leaves Chassidus applied to Sukkos What is the spiritual significance of eating in a sukkah? Why is Sukkos not in the spring after Pesach? Is there a connection between sukkah and mikveh, as both surround us completely? Why can a Sukkah be made of any materials you want, but the roof can only be made of materials that grow from the ground? Is the roof of the Sukkah more significant than its walls? Why is Chabad custom not to decorate the Sukkah? What is the meaning of the Gemara that in the future non-Jews will be tested with a Sukkah and they will refuse to sit in it because of the heat, and what is its message for us today? If Hashem wanted us to enjoy our time in the sukkah why did he create mosquitoes and bees to torment and ruin it for us? Why do we shake the Lulav? Why does an Esrog cost $100 when its cousin, the lemon, can be found in the supermarket for fifty cents? How do we justify price gouging? Why do we use an esrog from Italy instead of from Israel? What is Simchos Beis Hashoeiva and why did the Rebbe reinstitute this celebration? How can we control our diets during this holiday season with all its meals? Chassidus question: How does Chassidus explain Sukkos?

Two Jews bump into their Rebbe. One is unsophisticated but caring, the other is accomplished but aloof. Both had room to grow, but only one troubled the Rebbe. (Listen to find out which!) Join us as we discuss a second lesson (see ep. 7 for #1) from Rebbe Maharash to explore the choices for the "best" course of action. When the devotee exclaimed "Rebbe, I'm full of crookedness!" he wasn't expecting to be told to think more about himself. Join Adam and Dovid as they explore instruction by the 19th century Rebbe Maharash* for self-improvement and hash out the differences between self-centering and self-centeredness. Follow along here (Yiddish only, sorry Adam and co.): Sefer HaToldos Admu"r Mahara"sh. Click here to purchase an English translation of this text. Music: "Eye Contact" from Steph Chou's Prime Knot. *The Rebbe Maharash (1834 to 1882) was the fourth spiritual leader since the inception of the Chabad branch of orthodox Judaism. He is perhaps most known for his saying (known in Yiddish as “lechatchilah ariber”): “The world says: If you can't go under [an obstacle], leap over; I say: In the first place, go over!"
