Lag ba'Omer | What's Behind the Celebration? by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom The celebration of Lag ba'Omer is as much of a mystery as the prevailing practices in the period that leads up to it. We examine the two popular explanations - the cessation of the death of R. Akiva's students and the "Yahrzeit" of R. Shim'on bar Yochai - and demonstrate that neither explanation is reasonable, period-documented or satisfactory. Looking into the earliest source where the date of 18 Iyar appears, we discover a surprising (possible) explanation which puts Lag ba'Omer into a new light. Source sheet >>
This week we sit down with Dr. Elana Stein Hain to explore the way Yirmiyahu elaborates upon and adds layers of theological nuance to the concept of divinely bestowed blessings and curses. We touch upon the idea of national and individual retribution and the way Yirmiyahu tried to fight the dominant beliefs of his time. This episode has been sponsored in memory of Notah David ben Yerachmiel on his 25th Yahrzeit. This year The Matan Podcast is exploring the weekly Haftarah.

This class reflects on loss and yahrzeit, connecting it to Parshas Shemini. It teaches that even in mourning, one must strengthen connection to Hashem through tefillah and mitzvos, transforming pain into elevation for the neshama. https://www.torahrecordings.com/classes/by_parsha/003_vayikra/003_shmini/007
Ta'anit Esther marks the 40th Yahrzeit of Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l. Those old enough to remember his passing no doubt recall the feeling of colossal loss for the Gadol and Posek HaDor. But, now, four decades on, we must also consider his enduring legacy for Jewish life and law. To help us out with that our editor, Jeffrey Saks, catches up with R. Moshe Kurtz — the rabbi of Cong. Sons of Israel in Allentown, PA, and the author of Meoros Moshe, which anthologized R Feinstein's teachings on Pirkei Avot. Our readers also know him as the author of our “Unpacking the Iggerot” column at TraditionOnline.org.The post Rav Moshe's Legacy first appeared on Tradition Online.

Parshas Chayei Sarah: Courage To Begin In tribute to the fifth Yahrzeit of HaRav Ya'akov Tzvi Ben Dovid Sacks, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks. Our Parsha begins with loss, love, and a new beginning. Avraham buries Sarah with dignity, then sends Eliezer to find a partner for Yitzchak. Rivkah's kindness at the well reveals her greatness, and when she enters Sarah's tent, the miracles of the first Jewish home return. Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, shows that Avraham's life ends with peace not because he finished the mission, but because he began it with courage. True fulfillment comes from taking the first step, trusting that G-d will complete what we start. In honor of Eretz Yisroel – May G-d protect our brave soldiers, comfort all who grieve, and bring healing to our nation. Dedicated in loving memory of Edward Ben Efraim, Shlomo Ben Edward, and Yirachmiel Daniel Ben Gedalia.

Linda Gradstein and Noah Efron talk about (1) US President Donald Trump's “Twenty Point Plan,” to bring home the hostages and end the war, and (2) On the second Yahrzeit of October 7, how we have changed, personally, and as a society. For our most unreasonably generous Patreon supporters, in our extra-special, special extra discussion: John Oliver thinks that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a corrupt, warlike, evil scumbag. What do we make of that? Plus, music from the memorial ceremony in the park, by some of our best!

Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Brody wrote Ethics of Our Fighters: A Jewish View on War and Morality before the events of October 7th. Yet its publication shortly after the outbreak of the war in Gaza made the book especially timely—and deeply resonant. In it, R. Brody offers a “Jewish Multi-Value Framework” to navigate the often competing ethical considerations that arise in times of war—from the perspective of both those engaged in combat and those grappling with the moral questions. Drawing on emotionally charged moments from modern Israel's history and a candid exploration of the biblical texts related to warfare, R. Brody presents a thoughtful structure and vocabulary to approach some of the most difficult ethical dilemmas. In our conversation, we explore the book's central arguments and the diverse ways Jewish tradition has interpreted scriptural passages about war. These texts can often strike the modern reader as troubling, but as R. Brody points out, generations of sages and commentators have acknowledged these challenges and offered meaningful interpretive lenses through which to understand them. You can find R. Brody's book here: https://www.amazon.com/Ethics-Our-Fighters-Jewish-Morality/dp/159264676X This week's episode has been sponsored by Shuli Rockoff in observance of the Yahrzeit for her mother, Hudell Ruchama bat Avraham Shlomo and Etta Malka on the 25th of Tammuz.

Parshas Balak: Not Just Words Bilaam set out to curse, but ended up blessing. He tried to speak on his own—but G-d rewrote the message. This week, we explore the Ohr HaChaim's stunning commentary on how G-d transforms even twisted intentions into blessings. A donkey speaks, a prophet's eye opens, and we learn: words carry power, but purpose carries more.
